Same old story, one small difference. Instead of screwing the country Republicans shat their own bed for once. Apparently the geniuses didn’t exempt their internal bookkeeping from the right’s ideological hatred of good management practices. If the GOP was a roofing contractor nobody in their right mind would go near them.

Point and laugh. As small and pathetic as Republicans seem today, wait until we get kiddie locks back on the levers of power.

William Haynes, who wrote some of the most reprehensible legal advice in the Bush admin’s swirling black hole of legal thinking, will not supervise the Guantanamo “trials” after all. Telegraphing that he won’t have any acquittals at his trials might have something to do with it.

“I said to him that if we come up short and there are some acquittals in our cases, it will at least validate the process,” Davis continued. “At which point, [Haynes’s] eyes got wide and he said, ‘Wait a minute, we can’t have acquittals. If we’ve been holding these guys for so long, how can we explain letting them get off? We can’t have acquittals, we’ve got to have convictions.'”

Of course we didn’t permit torture confessions at Nuremberg. In fact I don’t think that we tortured anyone at all. And apparently we had some presumption of innocence back then. But other than that and political appointees constantly interfering with and overruling professional military lawyers you could barely slip a plastic card between Nuremberg and our Guantanamo hangin’ party.

Sure American values won a little victory today. Now let’s see who replaces him.

Weird. John Aravosis is shocked to find out that the National Review is behaving exactly like the National Review behaved forty years ago.

In other news the GOP is freaking out that people will think that they’re racists. Or maybe they’re worried that their blatant f*cking racism will hurt the tribe in November, who knows. Sounds like a distinction without a difference.

The Politico reports a secret super-duper RNC study:

Top Republican strategists are working on plans to protect the GOP from charges of racism or sexism in the general election, as they prepare for a presidential campaign against the first ever African-American or female Democratic nominee.

The Republican National Committee has commissioned polling and focus groups to determine the boundaries of attacking a minority or female candidate, according to people involved. The secretive effort underscores the enormous risk senior GOP operatives see for a party often criticized for its insensitivity to minorities in campaigns dating back to the 1960s.

Umm, yeah. Good luck with that, guys. ThinkProgress reports the following:

Florida state Rep. Donald Brown (Republican) introduced a bill last week to create a “Confederate Heritage” license plate for the state. Saying “it would give motorists a way to show pride in their heritage,” Brown proposes a $25 charge for motorists to purchase a plate with “a shield displaying the rebel battle flag symbol surrounded by several flags from the Civil War era.” The money would benefit “educational programs run by Sons of Confederate Veterans,” which considers the Civil War to be “the Second American Revolution.”

It is going to be a long, long year for the GOP.

What States Count?

And while I think Hillary should continue on, for now, I would really appreciate it if someone would ask Hillary point blank, right now, what states count:

After weeks of finding reasons to discount every Obama victory, the Clinton campaign seems to be laying the groundwork to argue that Texas — the state that they have been pointing to as more meaningful and representative than other states — doesn’t count, either. Why would they be discounting Texas? Oh, I don’t know, this might have something to do with it.

Sheesh.
