For me, the defining moment of the 2008 debates was when Obama confronted McCain for having “sung songs about `bomb, bomb Iran'” after McCain had talked about how he believed in speaking softly. It was a stupid thing for McCain to have done and it was smart of Obama to use it when he did. The Obama people have a good knack for attacking their opponents using their opponents’ own ridiculous words. So I wasn’t surprised to see this in a recent Obama email:
Last week, Republican Senator Jim DeMint made it pretty clear why the opponents of health care reform are fighting so hard. As he told a special interest attack group, “If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.” Here’s how the President responded:
Republicans would be smart to stick to pseudo-credible statements about CBO numbers and the like and to stay away from saying what they really think, which is of course that this is all about beating Obama. And not at all about good health care policy.
Now I’m waiting for some intrepid blogger/video editor type to put together a clever political video to the tune of Waterloo. Though it’s going to be pretty tough to top the original Waterloo video.
Update. MoveOn just hit me with an email with the subject heading “Waterloo”.
