Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Our messy unity will be our strength.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Bark louder, little dog.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Come on, man.

Ron v. Ron Over Ron

by John Cole|  December 9, 20095:14 pm| 81 Comments

This post is in: Assholes

I think if Ron Reagan was in the same room as that idiot scumbag Ron Christie, he would have punched him in the damned neck for trying to bring up his dad.

You really have to watch that clip. And just as an aside, Dick Cheney is a toxic piece of filth whose poison still infects this nation. I wish he would just drop off the face of the earth, and he can take that punk Ron Christie with him. Christie is now whining because Obama doesn’t say he loves America enough. Although if you listen to Cheney’s breathing on that Fox interview, he is not going to be around here long.

Sorry, forgot to mention this was on Hardball. Here is the video.

Are you so superior, are you in such pain?

I suppose it serves me right for reading Andrew Sullivan as much as I do, but I find myself really annoyed by all the people saying they’re “leaving the left” because Jane Hamsher said something mean about Obama.

I guess what bugs me most is the idea that they think anyone cares. The most ridiculous thing about pundits to me is how amazingly self-absorbed they are, how fascinating they find the twists and turns of their own minds. To me, it’s even worse when random people fall in love with their own beautiful minds.

Don’t get me wrong: when someone changes their mind about an issue and explains why, it can be very interesting. And I’m all for it. And when someone — I won’t name names — says “how the fuck could I have supported these idiots who drove the country into a ditch”, I think that’s great.

But why would anyone feel the need to announce to the world that they no longer feel like part of the left on account of the fact that some lefty bloggers aren’t sufficiently supportive of Obama?

What about the Baby Jesus?

Is this the best House Republicans can do?

Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and

Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment of the Constitution, in prohibiting the establishment of religion, would not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

(1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;

(2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and

(3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate Christmas.

I Don’t Get This At All

Kos is pissed:

Obama spent all year enabling Max Baucus and Olympia Snowe, and he thinks we’re supposed to get excited about whatever end result we’re about to get, so much so that we’re going to fork over money? Well, it might work with some of you guys, but I’m certainly not biting. In fact, this is insulting, betraying a lack of understanding of just how pissed the base is at this so-called reform. The administration may be happy to declare victory with a mandate that enriches insurance companies, yet creates little incentive to control costs or change the very business practices that have screwed so many people. But I’ll pass.

Democrats are demoralized, and have little incentive to turn out next year. The teabaggers will turn out. If this is how the Obama camp thinks we can energize the base — by promising them a health care pony for $5 to the same Democratic Party that is home to the likes of Baucus, Nelson, Lincoln, Lieberman, and the rest of the obstructionist gang — then we’re in for a world of hurt in 2010.

Look, I understand that things are not moving the way many people want them to and with the speed that some desire, but as far as I am concerned things are a HELLUVA lot better than last year. I think in all the doom and gloom, we forget that our President can now speak in full sentences, has not invaded Russia, and is not ducking shoes everywhere he goes.

I’ve been as disgusted and let down as many people by some decisions, but I look at where we were and where we are now, and there is no chance in hell I am going to be demoralized come November 2010. I’ve been watching the wingnuts- we need to keep them as far away from power as is legally possible. They are dangerous, and this Obama fellow, despite some letdowns, ain’t half bad.

And Hot Dogs Aren’t Really Made of Dogs, You Know…

I don’t even know what to make of this:

The problem is the “Medicare buy-in” they are talking about might not at all resemble the Medicare buy-in that Dean wants. A permanent, real Medicare buy-in for everyone between the ages of 55-64 would be a very positive development. Even if eligibility were restricted to only 55-64 year-olds on the exchange (self insured, uninsured, employees of small businesses), that would still be a step in the right direction.

My greater fear is that this “Medicare buy-in” has already been gutted or will soon be gutted of all value. Kent Conrad is pushing to decouple this Medicare buy-in from Medicare. Conrad wants to make it fake Medicare. He wants people in this fake Medicare to pay much higher reimbursement rates. and be placed in a separate risk pool. The people in fake Medicare might not even be able to use the Medicare provider network. This will make the premiums for Medicare buy-in dramatically higher, and might make the entire fake Medicare program unworkable. Already, the Federal Association of Hospitals is pushing for something like this change to gut the proposal.

Look, I know legislation is always more complicated than it sounds, but how do you “decouple” a “Medicare buy-in” from “Medicare.” That would seem to me to suggest that the “medicare buy-in” really isn’t, and instead is some sort of nonsense like “Medicare Advantage,” which was just a direct line from the treasury to insurance companies.

Either it is medicare or it isn’t, and if Jane Jon Walker is right, you shouldn’t be allowed to call it a Medicare buy-in. When businesses advertise falsely, we at least have the BBB. With Senators, we are just screwed.

The sweet smell of success

Glennzilla has a good run-down various media sources repeating the “Saddam can kill us all in 45 minutes” claim, which it turns out came from a cab driver. Usually, pundits repeat things that they hear directly from taxi drivers, so this adds another layer of transparency and accountability, I suppose.

Ryan Lizza was the most credulous:

Most remarkably, hours after Blair argued that Iraq could deploy chemical or biological weapons within 45 minutes of an order to use them, French President Jacques Chirac questioned whether Iraq had any proscribed weapons at all. . . . Even worse, unmovic is bound by two “memoranda of understanding” (MOU) negotiated between Baghdad and the U.N. that would serve Saddam well if inspectors return. . . . And it’s not just unmovic’s rules that worry some Bushies, especially the hawks. It’s Blix himself. “Blix is awful,” says a top State Department official.

As a result of reporting like this, Lizza was punished with one of the most coveted jobs in journalism: he now writes for The New Yorker.

Put a Sock In It, Bart

by John Cole|  December 9, 200911:58 am| 36 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

Stupak takes to the Times to defend himself, which means he must be feeling some heat:

The language in our amendment is completely consistent with the Hyde Amendment, which in the 33 years since its passage has done nothing to inhibit private health insurers from offering abortion coverage. There is no reason to believe that a continuation of this policy would suddenly create undue hardship for the insurance industry — or for those who wish to use their private insurance to pay for an abortion.

Then I guess it will be no big damned deal when your amendment is not inluded in the final bill, you C-Street busybody. I’d like Rep. Stupak to take some time to talk about the relationship between the C-Street creeps and the folks proposing legislation to execute homosexuals in Uganda. Then I might listen to him.

Have we figured out who to send money to to primary this clown?
