Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

All hail the time of the bunny!

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The Bullshit Begins

by John Cole|  January 9, 200910:12 am| 86 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, General Stupidity

In my e-mail box this morning, the following hysterical gibberish:

Do the folks at the Opinion Times have sex with goats? One wonders. This directs you to the following thoughtful essay at the aforementioned Opinon Times:

The incoming Obama administration will open up talks with Hamas. Right at the point where the terror group has been backed into a corner in Gaza by Israel, Barack Obama throws out a lifeline.

Obama transition team members have sent a message through the media today that when Obama takes office in 12 days, he will instruct our intelligence services to open a secret dialog with Hamas. Instead of running scared as they have for the last week or so, all Hamas need do now is hunker down for a few more days and wait for the incoming American administration to save their hides. And, alas, poor Israeli families in Beersheva will continue to suffer under the terrible rocket attacks from Gaza.

For the last six years, Democrats have been seeking to undermine the Bush administration’s efforts to fight the war on terror. Now Israel is once again fighting its own war on terror, and Barack Obama puts hope into what has certainly been a dispirited Hamas.

This smells like the precursor to a foreign policy disaster.

The report mentioned above is in the Guardian, and the Obama team is already denying the leak. For me, the only question is who is planting the leak- is it just wingnut conservatives trying to hamstring the Obama foreign policy, or is it pro-Israel groups trying to box Obama in and move him towards a more pro-Israel by forcing him to slap down Hamas with vigorous denials about this report?

At any rate, two thoughts. First, unless my memory is completely gone, Obama has said he will of course talk to Hamas provided they recognize Israel as a state and that they stop committing acts of terrorism (like, for example, chucking rockets indiscriminately at civilians in Israel). Hamas has done neither.

Second, if the Obama team was going to send a secret message to Hamas, would he really choose to do it through the UK Guardian?

*** Update ***

And now that I have thought about it- even if the sources are correct, so what? How could things possible be any worse for Palestians and Israel than they are right now? Folks in Israel live in constant fear that the next person who walks into their pizza shop or enters their bus could be wearing a bomb, or that at any minute while they are sleeping a rocket could come crashing down on them. Folks in Gaza have nothing going for them and are being massacred. How could things get worse?

Sarah Palin gets it

Following up on John’s slanted take on the Pailn mockumentary, this should be a slap in the face to those of you who doubted Palin’s wit and authenticity:

Conservatives will be thrilled to know that she immediately “got” and seemed to fully appreciate my joke that Pete Wilson (and not Arnold Schwarzenegger) would go down as the last Republican Governor in the history of California, If that wasn’t enough, when she looked at the back cover of my first film (“Blocking the Path to 9/11” www.blockingthepath.com) and saw the photo of one of the film’s targets, Keith Olbermann, she literally let out a shriek and, pointing to his photogragh, declared, “THAT guy is EVIL!”

This Is A Good Thing

This post is in: Politics

I have already had several people email me this article, and one person in the comments pointed to it and called it the Democratic circular firing squad, so let’s discuss it:

President-elect Barack Obama’s proposed tax cuts ran into opposition Thursday from senators in his own party who said they wouldn’t do much to stimulate the economy or create jobs. Senators from both parties agreed that Congress should do something to stimulate the economy. But Democratic senators emerging from a private meeting of the Senate Finance Committee criticized business and individual tax cuts in Obama’s stimulus plan.

They were especially critical of a proposed $3,000 tax credit for companies that hire or retrain workers.

“If I’m a business person, it’s unlikely if you give me a several-thousand-dollar credit that I’m going to hire people if I can’t sell the products they’re producing,” said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., a member of the committee.

“That to me is just misdirected,” Conrad said.

Sen John Kerry, D-Mass., said, “I’d rather spend the money on the infrastructure, on direct investment, on energy conversion, on other kinds of things that much more directly, much more rapidly and much more certainly create a real job.”

Let me be clear. I think this is a good thing. This is healthy. They are debating actual ideas, and there are disagreements, and hopefully they will work them out and come to a healthy endpoint. Maybe the Republicans will pull their heads out of their collective asses and decide that in the wake of the DOW dropping 80,000 points and massive unemployment and five quarters of negative growth there is something more important than capital gains tax cuts, Elian Gonzalez, Terri Schiavo, and the fairness doctrine, and join in the debate and act for once in good faith and with the best interests of the country in mind. A man can hope.

At any rate, I don’t think of this as the Democratic circular firing squad. When I think of that, I think of the kind of idiocy we have experienced the last few weeks, when DiFi gets butthurt about Panetta because her ring was not kissed enough and says things that she will have to walk back from in the future. Or when a bunch of people get upset at the number of vaginas in the cabinet and we are told we might as well have elected Rush Limbaugh. Or Rick Warren speaks for 3 minutes at the inauguration and Democrats everywhere shriek that Obama hates gays and some idiots go so far as to cancel their inauguration parties. Or anything Harry Reid has done since November 4th or whenever any jackass anywhere states “That is not the change I voted for” when the man isn’t even in office yet. That sort of nonsense, is to me, at least, the true Democratic circular firing squad.

Not actual debates about policy.

And yes, I do believe there is a bit of theatre to it all.

The Republican Twitter Revolution Is Off With a Bang

Every new venture is going to have a rocky start, so why should the Republican foray into the mysteries and vagaries of the intertrons and teh google be any different:

“Our majority was emaciated by electoral liposuction, our bold rebranding initiative put speed freaks to sleep and our approval rating nose-dived faster than Bozo on a bender.”

—Republican House Policy Committee Chairman Thaddeus McCotter, who — help us — is “blogging” now for Andrew Breitbart’s “Big Hollywood”

So much fail.

Some Cheese With Your Whine?

I’m with TBOGG– it does seem a little unfair to run “How Obama Got Elected” underneath Sarah Palin’s smug mug for this entire interview, because John McCain made enough mistakes in his own right that you can’t pin the whole thing on the Wasilla Wingnut. On the other hand, I love her assertion that she would have been treated better had she been a Democrat. Always a victim, these Republicans, what with the media out to get them and everything.

I guess it is probably pointless to dig up all the fawning media coverage she got after reading the speech someone else wrote for her at the convention (I remember the terms “electrified” and the phrase “a star is born”) and what not. I guess it is pointless to mention that it was only after she lied repeatedly about the bridge to nowhere that the media started to question her, and that it was after she refused to answer any questions for weeks on end that they started to get pissy. I guess it is pointless to note that it was Palin’s own disastrous interviews with Gibson and Couric that cemented the view of her as a dim bulb.

She’s got her facts, and she is sticking to them, and I say “You go, girl.” If I know anything, it is that America hates losers, and Sarah Palin seems intent on spending the next few years reminding everyone what a loser she is. More power to her.
