Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans do not trust women.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Bark louder, little dog.

People are complicated. Love is not.

So very ready.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Not all heroes wear capes.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

You Can’t Bluff Someone Who’s Not Paying Attention

I think TBogg has this right about O’Donnell:

She seems like a lovely person; cute, charming, supremely confident in her know-nothingness, gliding through life on adorableness and Jesus love and sincerity. And not much else. A review of her not-running-for-public-office work history doesn’t turn up much in the way of marketable skills other than the ability to parrot talking points, which, when you actually think about it, does kind of qualify her to be a US Senator. Or the business and economics editor for The Atlantic, for that matter. You look at her eyes when she’s asked a question off the beaten path and you don’t get the feeling that that is the sound of gears grinding away that you hear. More like the wind rustling through the willows and maybe a sad loon calling from across the lake.

When it comes to the misuse of campaign funds, I think O’Donnell sincerely believes that the people who gave her money to run for office gave it to her with the understanding that she is doing God’s work no matter how long it takes and a rent payment here and an evening of bowling there are just a place to stay and a thing to do during The Perpetual Campaign of Righteousness, for she is the embodiment of the contributors hopes and desires. They want her to use it as she sees fit.

Sure she’s making a living off of the yokels much like Sarah Palin does, but she lacks the white trash feral cynicism of a Palin. O’Donnell’s no Grifter Grizzly, she’s more Blanche Dubois; spiritually pure, lost in a fantasy and depending on the kindness of strangers.

I actually remember her on the old Bill Maher shows, and TBogg is right- she’s stupid, silly, pig-ignorant, and a true-believer, but I just don’t sense a malicious streak. Sure, the outcome of her policies would have a malicious impact on the American people, but I don’t think she understands that.

In savvier times, Christine O’Donnell would be the mark. She’d be the idiot spending all her days trying to convince grandma to sell all the silverware and the IBM stocks that grand-daddy left behind so that they can give the money to Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, because everyone knows they are doing the Lord’s work. These days, though, we’re such a stupid nation and one segment of our population is so thoroughly into the Jeebus was a Conservative kool-aid that Christine O’Donnell has moved from mark to become God’s Accidental Grifter.

Fish Don’t Fry in the Kitchen

Some schadenfreude for those of you who were right about WMD in the beginning:

Judith Miller used to be a superstar. She was a major reporter at the New York Times for decades — at the DC bureau, in Cairo, in Paris, special correspondent to the Persian Gulf, embedded with a special unit in Iraq. She had the best sources. She had amazing scoops. Now she’s writing — on contract, not full-time — for Newsmax, a goofy right-wing magazine where conservatives you’ve never heard of (and John Stossel, apparently) report, constantly, that Barack Obama is bad and unpopular. It’s a steep fall, and it couldn’t have happened to a worse journalist.

***

But this must still be galling to Judith. Becoming a right-wing martyr is generally a pretty good career move — it’ll make Juan Williams a millionaire — but Judy Miller is used to the respect afforded a New York Times foreign correspondent superstar. Filing a piece from Iraq to a wingnut’s pet newsletter is probably not how she envisioned her career shaping up.

But it works for me.

Make sure you read the whole piece, including the bit about Noonan being married to some lunatic who writes there.

And has anyone done a conclusive list of all the people whose credibility was completely shot by the Bush Administration- Miller, Libby, Powell, um, me.

The coming ‘If you’re black git back, if you’re brown keep down’ contest

by Dennis G.|  December 30, 20108:01 pm| 31 Comments

This post is in: Crock Pot Craziness, Open Threads, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell, Good News For Conservatives

An incoming freshman class of lunatics is about to be sworn in as new members of Congress and the competition for the most insane or the most ignorant or the most racist or the most silly or the most foolish or the most corrupt Member of the 112th Congress is about to heat up.

In the advance of so many promising prima donnas, gadflies, race-baiters and all around wankers coming to town, the current holders of the titles in the 111th Congress need to throw down some markers to claim their top dog status. Perhaps that explains why Congressman Steve King is working overtime to prove that he is Alpha Dog where matters of race-baiting, fear-mongering and defense of whiteness are concerned. In a conversation on wingnut radio King let it be known that he will investigate folks for being black and in the past he has let it be known that he will also investigate folks for being brown and/or for being an immigrant.

Investigating ACORN (despite the fact that the wingnuts slandered it to death earlier this year) is high on King’s list as is his fear that a settlement to a lawsuit by black farmers for decades of proven discrimination by the Department of Agriculture is somehow “reparations” for slavery. At the root of all of King’s ‘concerns’ is a message that he is the one who will fight to protect white folks in America from scary black and brown people–especially that _ _ _ _ _ _ in the White House.

Steve King has perfected the dark art of turning every issue into a fresh opportunity for race-baiting, grandstanding and holding himself up as a defender of whiteness in America. The incoming Republican Confederate Party freshmen have their work cut out for them if they hope to top this corn-fed weasel.

Whether of not King acts out of racism is irrelevant–I don’t think that is the case as I doubt that King has any real sincere belief beyond self-promotion. If he was an old school racist one could at least say he had some integrity within the confines of his world view, but King and the others like him don’t even have that. They really are just about holding onto power by getting on the mighty wingnut Wurlitzer and appealing to the lizard brains of the gullible. If an appeal to race-baiting or immigrant bashing or religious intolerance helps in the effort then he’ll use use it, but it would be a mistake to think that he believes anything he says.

And that is why King and the other old dogs of the Republican Confederate Party will dominate the incoming Wingnut freshmen–some of those fools actually still believe the talking points they’ve been handed to read.

Still, it will be quite a contest.

Cheers

A Simple Formula

This post is in: Free Markets Solve Everything, Glibertarianism

When in doubt, blame the unions. Personally, I’m holding out until we hear how ACORN and the New Black Panther Party are involved.

I do have to admit that I love this paragraph:

Assuming this is true it’s likely to provide much more ammunition to the arguments of those on the right who have started speaking out against the very idea of a public employees being allowed to unionize. Personally, I don’t think it would be appropriate to ban people from voluntarily associating just because they’re public employees. However, situations like this do raise the legitimate question of whether public employees in certain positions should be legally permitted to engage in some of the tactics that unions in the private sector engage during work disputes. When you’re a position where your job is one that is essential to the operation of the city — like a policeman, fireman, or sanitation worker — I think it’s highly questionable to concede that you should the right to go on strike. Essentially what happens in that situation is that the Union has a huge negotiating advantage over the city because leaders would not want to deal with the backlash that would result from the fact that garbage hasn’t been picked up in a week.

“I have no idea if this is true, but nonetheless it proves public employee unions are bad!” That’s fucking pro.

Sorry for the lack of posts, but I picked up my car and paid the bill and have been curled up in the fetal position all day.

On the other hand, the car is running great- better than it has in years.

I think I hate Justin Bieber more than I like Muslims

by Imani Gandy (ABL)|  December 30, 20103:51 pm| 189 Comments

This post is in: Humorous, Flash Mob of Hate, WTF?

If Justin Bieber is for religious tolerance, then I’m against it.

In news that is alternatively LOL and OMGWTF?, Justin Bieber has been thrust into the (apparently ongoing) debate about Park 51 aka Cordoba House aka The Muslin Mosk That Wants to Kill Your Family and Pets.

A bunch of fuckwits are still pissed off about the Cordoba House, which is being built in an old Burlington’s Coat Factory a few blocks away from Ground Zero and the World Trade Center Commemorative Strip Club. They are so pissed off that they are boycotting any companies that support the rights of motherfuckers to go pray in the middle of the day or learn how to swim, or learn how to make houses out of popsicle sticks near the “hollowed ground” that is Ground Zero.

Well, this may shock you folks, but I vote yes on Proposition Boycott. Yes, that’s right. I’m all for it! I know I’ve ranted and raved about how head ‘splodey these intolerant Islamophobic idiots make me, so I understand that my about-face on this issue may come as a surprise. But hear me out!

These former fuckwits, now champions of liberty, freedom, and All Things Palin (She’s not so bad when you think about it… I sort of like her now!) have proposed a boycott that I can fully get behind (even though it turns me against all my Muslim brothers and sisters): THEY ARE BOYCOTTING TEH BIEBER.

That’s right. These patriots, these king of kings have dragged Canada’s pop sensation minion from hell into the fray, and I, for one, support it.

I sense creeping Galtism amongst the FP crew, but perhaps some of you are feeling more communitarian.
