Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Fight them, without becoming them!

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Deadline for sending your pics to Beth S. at [email protected] is tonight, October 31. All profits go to Cole’s chosen rescue group MARC (Marion Animal Resource Connection). Beth’s specifications:

I’m looking for the highest resolution images possible. The photos themselves won’t be that large, but the largest and highest resolution images people can send the better. I have photoshop and can do some remediation on images as necessary.

Please name the file, if they can, with the name(s) of the pet(s) in the photo. If they can’t, like they are sending from their phone, and they are sending multiple photos of multiple pets to give a brief description along with the name in the email like “yellow lab on couch is fido” or “black cat on left is spot and orange cat on right is tiffles.”

Send your pics (don’t be shy, neither your art nor your pet(s) need to be ‘show quality’) to [email protected]. Any problems, you can also send them to me at [email protected] (or click on my name under ‘Contact’ in the right-hand column).

Happy Halloween- Part 2

Here is another treat. Another reason why I love my fraternity boys- I’ve drilled it into them that they aren’t just part of the college, but part of the town, so they help out at town events whenever they are needed. Here they are decorating the church for the annual Halloween party last night and then tonight, running the costume contests and cleaning up after. Just good kids:

The kid in the second picture popping off a cap Boardwalk Empire style just cracks me up. His real name is Nelson, and during the costume contest he went on stage and called himself Babyface Nelson. That kid and his parents are full of win.

I did the usual routine of giving out candy and trying to make sure Rosie doesn’t escape when I open the door. It was rainy and crappy, so I had half as many guests this year as last, so at the end I was basically shoveling candy into baskets just to get rid of it all.

Steve was quite the stud- he cameto the door and peeked his head out every time someone knocked and I think I heard “Woah that’s a big cat” and “Wow look at his paws” twenty times. I’m beginning to think his former owners had a daughter, because every time a little girl came to the door, he rushed over to her and demanded to be petted and got super affectionate. It was really cute.

Cat Bleg – Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Area

From commentor Rihilism:

I wrote to you some time ago about my two cats, Irina and Masha. Unfortunately, I am unable to house or take care of them or find them new homes, so they have been staying with a friend who already has a dog and three cats. My friend has a small house and the living arrangement has become unworkable. This means we may have to bring my cats to a shelter. I’m desperate to find a home for them in the Iowa City – Cedar Rapids, Iowa corridor and was hoping you might repost their images along with a brief description of each kitty. The following is a description I’ve been using on Craigslist to try to find a home. Any help would be greatly appreciated…

Two beautiful Torby sisters. Approximately 4 years old. Sweet dispositions, very affectionate. Litter box trained, spayed. May adjust to other pets given patience and time, (i.e.: foster home has a big lab that they’ve come to trust). Looking for a good home(s), separate or together.

Irina is the bigger sister. Calm and clever, sweet and gregarious. She’s a buddy cat who likes to hang out with you. Loves to play, easy going and active, she’d make you a perfect pal. Looks you directly in the eye when you talk to her. Loves to ‘strike a pose, so she is easy to photograph. Lap kitty.

Masha is the littler sister, a bit shy but very affectionate. This kitty seems like a gymnast – long and slender, agile and loves to climb up above the action, when not part of it. Very smart cat who has been known to play fetch. Loving and sweet too, she’s always up for a good petting. Shoulder kitty.

If you are interested / have any leads / know about no-kill shelters in the area, contact me at [email protected] (click on my name in the right-hand column under ‘contact’), and I’ll put you in touch.

If there’s an issue money can solve — transportation, for instance — I’m in for $100.

Letters, I Get Letters

Kids in my neighborhood know they get no candy unless they lead.

— Ron Fournier (@ron_fournier) October 31, 2013

Reader R sends in this gem from Ron Fournier. Funny guy.

Another reader sent me this item about the NRC banning a couple of operators from the nuclear industry. It reads like a movie plot:

The NRC investigated the incident in which senior reactor operator Michael J. Buhrman, planned to rob an armored car and recruited the assistance of another senior reactor operator, Landon E. Brittain. The plan was not carried out. However, Buhrman was apprehended for aggravated vehicular carjacking and fled the country after being released on bail. He was tried and sentenced in absentia. Brittain has a number of criminal charges pending against him.

The NRC concluded that Buhrman’s and Brittain’s actions while offsite demonstrated they could not be relied upon to adhere to NRC requirements to protect plant and public safety. In addition, Dresden personnel who knew about Buhrman’s plan to commit an offsite crime failed to report the situation to plant management, which is an NRC requirement for workers who have unescorted access to the plant.

Sounds like some other plant employees are also in trouble for not reporting this crazy scheme.

Here’s an open thread.

I hate the big decisions

by DougJ|  October 31, 20131:38 pm| 147 Comments

This post is in: Don't Trip, Organize

No one could have predicted:

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which eviscerated the Voting Rights Act, is leading to a new era of voter suppression that parallels the pre-1960s era—this time affecting not just African-Americans but also Hispanic-Americans, women, and students, among others.

[….]

In Texas, the law could require voters to travel as much as 250 miles to obtain an acceptable voter ID—and it allows a concealed-weapon permit, but not a student ID, as proof of identity for voting. Moreover, the law and the regulations to implement it, we are now learning, will create huge impediments for women who have married or divorced and have voter IDs and driver’s licenses that reflect maiden or married names that do not exactly match. It raises similar problems for Mexican-Americans who use combinations of mothers’ and fathers’ names.

[….]

Reps. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., and Keith Ellison, D-Minn., have introduced in Congress a constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right to vote. It has garnered little attention and no momentum. Now is the time to change that dynamic before more states decide to be Putinesque with our democracy.

It’s a stupid strategy, because it just further alienates not just African-Americans but also Hispanic-Americans, women, and students, among others. I don’t know if it hastens or delays the decline of the power of the Republican party, but it makes the decline more certain.

I’m more fond of Khruschev than of Putin, so a (political) message to the would be vote suppressors: we will bury you.
