Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I really should read my own blog.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

“They all knew.”

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Most of you should go to bed and try to be better Jackals in the morning.

The lights are all blinking red.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

The song remains the same

This post is in: Music, Open Threads

The other day I watched “Moneyball” and it struck me that song the girl sings, “The Show”, sounds exactly like that awful You Done Done Me, and they both sound like that start with my toes, then I wrinkle my nose song and like that new version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow that now accompanies many YouTube videos.

So I thought it would be a good time for another songs that sound alike thread! In the past we’ve covered Lady Madonna/What I Got and Keep Me Hanging on/Vertigo and All Day and All Of The Night/You Really Got Me Going.

Here’s a couple others: I Don’t Know Why I Didn’t Come/The Peanuts Christmas song and Tired of Being Alone/I Love The Nightlife.

What are some other good ones?

It’s cold and there is a lot of freezing rain, so we are just satying at home and watching football (and playing warcrack, in my case). It’s so cold, that Rosie managed to jump into a laundry basket full of dirty clothes, and when we called her for treats, she came out like this:

rosiecold

She somehow had managed to wrap a t-shirt all around her body, and walked around like that for several hours, looking like the JRT equivalent of a pack mule. Goofy dog.

My football team is not playing today, so nothing to look forward to sports-wise until the Pens play tonight. What is going on around your parts?

It’s Always WW II With These Assholes

This post is in: Peak Wingnut Was a Lie!

Random Paul’s latest is a comparison of Obama’s immigration order to Roosevelt’s Japanese-American internment order. Since it’s obvious that giving undocumented immigrants the opportunity to earn citizenship is almost the same thing as locking them up in a prison camp, perhaps I shouldn’t be criticizing the lesser Paul’s latest emission. But my critique is stylistic, not substantive, to wit: Do these fucking wingnuts know that there are other wars in American history besides World War II?

It’s always Hitler this, Hitler that, Manzanar this, Manzanar that with these people. Yet, believe it or not, American soldiers have fought and died in other places and at other times. For example, I would have thought the best comparisons for the last few years of politics would come from the trench warfare stalemates of World War I. “Obama’s failure to invite Mitch McConnell and John Boehner over for cocktails has turned the relationship between the White House and Congress into a modern day Western Front.” See, it wasn’t so hard. And Yahweh knows that Japanese internment is not the only case of war-related American cruelty to other Americans. Andersonville springs to mind, though I realize that bringing up the Civil War in any context other than the rightness of flying the stars and bars is a bit risky for civil rights stalwarts like Aqua Buddha.

If we’re going to have to listen to another two years of frothing at the mouth horseshit, I think we should expect, or even demand, that the wingnuts step it up. Let’s assign the different factions a war. The anti-abortion wackos get Korea, because nobody can stretch an analogy like those nutcases, and there’s going to be some stretching involved (“Abortion is to fetuses like the Chinese crossing the Yalu River was to the UN forces”). Vietnam goes to the warmongers like McCain, who never learn from anything. Southern Republicans get the Civil War because, obviously, they’re still fighting it. There aren’t enough Teabaggers to keep the Revolutionary War, so they must be re-assigned to a minor conflict–let’s say the Spanish American War. The anti-gay fanatics get the War of 1812, because it was still being fought after it was essentially over. I could go on, but you get the picture.

Late Night Open Thread: Speaking of Friday Doc-Dumps…

This post is in: Enhanced Protest Techniques, Open Threads, Republican Stupidity

From Jeremy Stahl at Slate, “GOP-Controlled Intelligence Committee Debunks Benghazi Conspiracies“:

The Republican-controlled House Intelligence Committee has issued a report roundly rejecting a number of conspiracy theories about the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

The report, which was released on Friday after a two-year-long investigation, responded to a number of long running theories about the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others.

The report found that there was no evidence of a “stand-down order” and that there was no advanced warning of the attack, two canards that have been reported by media outlets such as Fox News.

The report said that the process used to create a series of contested talking points by then U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice was flawed, but the report did not say that Rice or the administration had intentionally misled the public with those talking points…

Looks like Issa and his GOP compeers didn’t even need the cover of a new Ferguson “outrage” to drop this sad little afterthought down the Media Village memory hole unnoticed.

On stage at Goldman Sachs event, Uber CEO compared his company’s woes to Ferguson http://t.co/yiNufnSC6s

— Mark Ames (@MarkAmesExiled) November 21, 2014

Background from Annie Lowrey, at NYMag, “Acting Like Sexist, Threatening Jerks Not Quite Working Out for Uber”:

… It is just the latest in a series of public-relations disasters stemming from Uber’s questionable business practices or its executives’ crappy attitudes. There’s Travis Kalanick, its chief executive, calling it “Boob-er,” because of all the women he’s picking up. There’s the company arming contractors with burner phones to sabotage its rival, Lyft. There’s the promotion in France, pairing riders with “hot chick” drivers. The list goes on and on: the kidnapping of a passenger, the complaints of its drivers, the denials of liability when accidents happen….

Previously, Uber used controversy to publicize its anti-incument business message. City councils would oppose it, or taxis would sue it, and Uber would get to telegraph to the world: We’re here to bring you a cheaper, better service, and these folks are trying to stop us! But the more recent incidents are of a different sort. They indicate that the company is untrustworthy, that it misuses customer data, that it would blackmail a prominent reporter, that it lacks a moral backbone…

Ummm… maybe Kalanick’s not identifying himself with the protestors in Ferguson?…

Friday Recipe Exchange: Preparing for Thanksgiving

jeffreyw cornbread stuffing

Cornbread stuffing by JeffreyW

.
From our Food Goddess, TaMara:

Bixby and I are hitting the road for the holiday, as long as the weather stays nice. I’m planning on arriving early so I can help with prep, because I like love to cook. Bixby is growing fast and you can see his latest photo here, along with a quick update. I hope he does as well in the car as he did last trip.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, next to 4th of July. Food, family, friends…and leftovers. I compiled some favorite recipes for tonight’s recipe exchange.

JefferyW makes Cornbread Stuffing, part 1 here and part 2 here.

Roasted Butternut Apple Soup makes a great starter, recipe here.

I think I’m going to volunteer for mashed potato duty this year so I can make these again, a lost recipe found, Hearty Garlic Mashed Potatoes, link here. I made them years ago and then completely forgot about the recipe.

And this recipe is the reason I think I get invited to many holiday gatherings, my Cranberry Upside Down Cake, click here.

Since my brother is cooking again this year, we’ll probably have deep fried turkey, which is ok by me, as long as I’m not cooking it. I have a real fear of deep frying anything, which is why all the deep fried recipes on the blog are from JeffreyW. I will still cook a turkey, though, because, leftovers. This year I’m going to try the braising method from America’s Test Kitchen’s Braised Turkey technique, link here, minus the brining.

Not sure how you want to cook your turkey this year? I’ve listed some ideas from people smarter than I am: turkey four different ways, here.

What’s on the menu for your Thanksgiving this year? Do you have a must-have recipe for your holiday dinner?

I’m not a fan of traditional candied sweet potatoes, so tonight’s featured recipes are some non-traditional styles of recipes for sweet potatoes.

Eat dessert first…

(h/t Tastefully Offensive)
—
I grew up with golden retrievers — my mum bred them for a while.  They’re great dogs, sweet, fun, all good stuff.
—
(As always, avoid puppy mills and look for the overbreeding that exacerbates the breed’s problems with hips and the like…but a good golden is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.)
—
But I have to say that the video above caught the true essence of golden-hood.  They’re goofs.
—
Happy Friday, all.
