Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Consistently wrong since 2002

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

The willow is too close to the house.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

All hail the time of the bunny!

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Everybody saw this coming.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Long Read: “The Two Michael Sams”

by Anne Laurie|  November 15, 20146:12 pm| 91 Comments

This post is in: Excellent Links, Sports

There used to be a social-work theory that deeply dysfunctional families would unconsciously appoint one child as a “survivor”, the individual to be pushed away from the interconnected generational drama as a living side bet, or at least to write the obituaries. If Buzzfeed‘s Joel Anderson is correct, Michael Sam Jr. might be one of those survivors:

In a yellow-walled room in a Texas nursing home this July, a man in a wheelchair watched a flat-screen TV. He saw Michael Sam Jr. kiss his boyfriend and hug his small team of supporters — agents, coaches, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown. The first out gay player drafted into the National Football League strode to the stage to receive ESPN’s Arthur Ashe Award, an honor previously bestowed on Muhammad Ali, Pat Tillman, and Nelson Mandela. It was the climax of a star-studded evening in Los Angeles meant to announce Michael Jr.’s arrival as a national icon.

Michael Jr. thanked his agents, his publicist, the couple who welcomed him into their home in high school, supporters from the University of Missouri, and top officials with the St. Louis Rams, the team that had drafted him only two months earlier.

Finally, he gave a brief nod to his roots. “To my mother, a single mother who somehow raised eight kids. I love you dearly.”

Back in his cramped room at the nursing home, Michael Sam Sr. picked up his battered, flip-style phone and found his son’s number. He left a message.

“So that’s what you’re going to do?” he recalled telling his son. “After all I’ve done for you?”

Since Michael Jr. publicly announced he was gay in February — just days after he let his father know by text message — Michael Sr. has been vilified in the press. In the New York Times, Michael Sr. came off as a callous homophobe when he said, “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment. … I’m old school. I’m a man-and-a-woman type of guy.” When the ESPN documentary declared that Michael Sr. had “abandoned the family” and left his mother to raise Michael Jr. and his seven siblings on her own, Michael Sr. seemed the archetype of the intolerant and absent black father.

In none of these accounts did Michael Jr. come to his father’s defense. “I’m closer to my friends than I am to my family,” Michael Jr. told the Times.

But the father-son story of Michael Sr. and Michael Jr. is more than a conflict over whether Michael Sr. loved and supported his son. It’s the tale of man who’s been reduced to a caricature but whose actual life was shaped by the loss of child after child, some to death and some to crime. The rift between Michael Sr. and his youngest son started long before Michael Jr. came out and stems in no small part from those family tragedies…

Interesting football games on today. There’s a thread on it below. My team threw away a late fourth quarter lead and lost in overtime, but if our crappy coach gets punted out of The Swamp, it’ll be a small price to pay.

My kid is doing a stop-motion film project this evening. She said, “Mom, can you sculpt a 4-1/2 inch tall replica of Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’? Right now?”

So I said, “Sure!”

That’s what I’m doing. You?

UPDATE: Wah-lah!

How Dumb Can He Get?

I realize that Rafael’s schtick is a variant of Cleek’s law (the opposite of what Obama said, updated daily), but is there no bridge too far? Does anyone really think that the problem with cable providers is the bootheel of excessive government regulation that’s crushing their natural inclination to innovate in an unfettered free market? And if you don’t agree that this statement is one too far, is there anything that Cruz could say that would cause his hardcore base to pause for a moment and wonder about this guy?

College Football Picks & Open Thread

There’s a lot of great football on tap today. I haven’t followed college football this year as closely as I normally do, so I’m not going to make a pick on every game. But here are my picks for some of the games I’ll be watching today — rationales below.

cfb_picks_1115

I think Georgia Tech beats Clemson. Why? I dunno — just a feeling. Mississippi State will roll the Tide, making Saban even more dyspeptic, if that’s possible. LSU will root out the Hawgs.

The Dawgs, still smarting from that beat-down Florida delivered, will take out their ire on the luckless Tigers / War Eagles.

I WISH Miami would beat FSU. I hate both of them but hate FSU more. But the ‘Noles have lured me into false hopes of their implosion too many times this year. I think they beat “The U” like a rented mule.

As for my own Gators, damn, I hope they win. My grandma went to the University of South Carolina, and she will be insufferable over the holidays if the ‘Cocks prevail. But I think the Gators lose, damn it.

What say y’all?

The Philae lander’s batteries have been exhausted and the lander has shut down, perhaps to be revived in August, 2015 as 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko makes a closer approach to the sun.

John Doar, fearless civil rights attorney in the 60’s and Watergate staff attorney in the 70’s, died this week.

Saturday Morning Open Thread: Sartorial Choices

Since we got on Matt Taylor’s case about his choice in celebratory threads, Citizen Commissar commentor Morzer points out it’s only fair we also run his apology. From the Guardian:

The scientist who caused a furore by wearing a sexist shirt as he gave a progress report on the Rosetta mission on Wednesday has made an emotional apology for his “big mistake”. Matt Taylor was more plainly dressed on Friday as he broke down in tears at a briefing, apparently struggling to speak before confessing: “I made a big mistake and I offended many people, and I am very sorry about this.”…

His apology during an update on the progress of the European Space Agency mission was greeted sympathetically by particle physicist Clare Nellist. “Impressed with Taylor from @ESA_Rosetta for admitting shirt choice was a mistake. Takes strength of character.”…

There is video, at the link, if you need it to verify that Taylor may be a schnook or even a schlemiel but he’s capable of learning better, when corrected.

Next time he’s facing an important milestone on camera, maybe Taylor should take a hint from Rob Bricken at io9:

Today is a good day. Oh, I’m sure there’s plenty of terrible things going on in the world right now, but today is the day that Underoos, the incredible t-shirt-underpants-minimalist cosplay underwear returns to stores! For adults even! And with awesome characters to choose from!
superman underoos

Right now, Hot Topic is selling seven sets — Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Captain America, He-Man and Skeletor — for just under $20 each (new Batman Underoos definitely exist, but they seem to be sold out online)…

…[G]iven how many licenses Hot Topic carries, do you know what kind of Underoos we could possibly get if we’re lucky? Deadpool! Transformers! Supernatural! Halo! Harry Potter! Rocky Horror Picture Show! THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS AND AWESOME….

I’m sure I’ve seen Rocky Horror Picture Show underoos already, but that was probably at Frederick’s…
***********
Apart from contemplating cosplay by proxy, what’s on the agenda for the day?
