Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Or at least, none featuring Senator Warren as VP:

In an apparent sign that Sen. Elizabeth Warren will not be named Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Warren was invited by Clinton’s campaign Tuesday to deliver a prime-time address on the first night of the Democratic convention this month — a marquee speaking slot but one that is earlier than vice-presidential picks typically appear.

Oh well. Probably for the best since we have to retake the Senate, and the wider the margin, the better.

Open thread!

Even if we didn’t have to retake the Senate — which, of course, we do — I still think Warren is much more effective there than she could ever be as VP. Another few years of retirements and tossing out Republicans, and she’ll have some serious clout, with the seniority to go with it. She can be a forceful advocate for policies where she might have to be more constrained as Vice President.

I am certainly looking forward to her convention speech :-)

Warren’s much more effective in the Senate anyway. With Evan Bayh’s entrance and now news that they’re trying to recruit in KS of all places, it seems like they’re really trying to run up the score there.

And thank Christ for that. Warren has been the best voice for the economic left we’ve had in decades. She needs to stay in Congress and keep building more people like her and bringing more congresspersons around to her point of view. She could no longer be that voice if she was running for the White House, even as a VP – the White House has to appease and compromise between too many different factions for the people in it to be the kind of activist people love Warren as.

Besides, you know how we’re always complaining that Democrats are strong at the national/White House level but need to be a lot stronger at the state and local level, with senators and congressmen and governors and so forth? That begins with not deciding that every new shiny object on the political scene needs to go straight to the White House.

Elizabeth Warren is easily one of my favorite politicians of this day and age. And I like her right where she is.

News you might be able to use: IF a relative dies who maintained a piddling checking account to autopay bills and IF that relative seized the opportunity to flip you off from beyond the grave by naming you executor and IF that relative also forgot to designate a beneficiary on the piddling checking account: you, executor, can pay bills out of your account till it’s probated and then get reimbursed. Our lawyer suggests you pay by check, and make copies.

Now, run out and put a beneficiary on every account you have, as not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to pay extra bills and wait for reimbursement. Your relatives will thank you one day.

Warren is a pol now, and as a pol is entitled to think of herself (and to be fair, the causes she espouses). As Senator Warren, she can legitimately hold Clinton’s feet to the fire if she feels the need and also can move into actual opposition if Clinton really screws up. As VP Warren, she can do neither. Also, in the dire event Clinton loses Senator Warren who wasn’t on the ticket immediately becomes leader of the opposition untainted by what, let’s face it, would be a humiliating defeat.

This is freaking stupid. It’s like me donating to the local church’s soup kitchen and also shopping at the local grocery store. The grocery store hires a security guard who later becomes a police officer who a couple of years later lets the minister’s wife off with a stern lecture instead of giving her a speeding ticket. Elizabeth Warren is easily one of my favorite politicians of this day and age. And I like her right where she is.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Warren has no presidential aspirations…period.

Her age is a problem. She’s already 67. Even if she could run in 2020, she’d be 71, which is old for a first timer. That assumes that Clinton loses in 2016 or doesn’t run for some reason in 2020. HRC will be 73 running for a second term, but it is probably easier to be 73 going for re-election than it would be for Warren trying to be elected the first time at 71.

If she remains in the Senate, there is no reason she can’t serve for another decade or more, assuming she remains healthy . She can do a lot of good in the Senate.

(I was very enthusiastic about Warren for president someday until I saw how old she is. Things just aren’t arranged well for her. Which means Massachusetts gets to keep a great senator. Lucky.)

Trump is impossible to predict because he doesn’t actually know how politics work from the inside and apparently doesn’t know he should know. I think he also is getting turned down because real politicians know he is bad news.
Hillary is calculating who helps her the most with her voters. Guy with little name recognition and no political experience is not helpful, won’t get picked. Hillary looks likely to win, she will get lots of choices.

Whomever she picks will be around for four or eight years. I’ve always felt Hillary should choose a VP — a credible understudy, a co-executive, a voice in the room for crisis situations and strategy sessions, a congressional dealmaker if she needs one — rather than a mere running mate.

  149. 149.

    Applejinx

    July 13, 2016 at 4:34 pm

@Chris: I know why people would want that, because I’m one of the people who would have been excited to see a Clinton/Warren ticket. (for reasons already given, it’s not super hard to talk me off the ledge over it)

All we can do is look to political actions in order to try and read the tea leaves for what Clinton’s gonna do when she wins. We really don’t get any say. This isn’t really democracy and given how it’s worked for decades and how it’s brought us Trump, democracy ain’t no silver bullet anyway… but it means we have to look for clues as to what our God-Kings in power will do to us.

Warren as VP sends several messages, as a political act. Warren has powerful economic concerns, great suspicion of the financial sector: she’s a very loud voice on that stuff. To select her would (a) actually reduce her practical power, and (b) signal that the Hillary Administration intended to pursue Warrenlike directions going forward.

It’s this signaling that matters to people, since we have no power and can’t control anything. In the absence of a Warren VP, we are actually a little stronger in political terms, but have less reason to believe the administration will support Warren’s intentions. Hillary can say things, but a lot of us intend to vote for her despite not really believing any of her words, because she is the only candidate on either side of the aisle with any hope of getting anything done and we’re not apocalyptic vandals.

You can be in favor of ‘don’t utterly destroy our whole government and our entire country’ and still be anxiously awaiting any TANGIBLE evidence Hillary is not going to just sell us to the bankers and call that an economic recovery. It’s clearly one of her options that would make many rich people happy, and it is an option she should flatly reject. But words are mighty cheap…
