With just eight days to go before Sept. 30, the deadline after which Republicans will lose the ability to pass an ACA replacement with a simple majority, activists working to save the law were markedly cautious. Days of action — Saturday rallies organized by MoveOn, Monday rallies by Indivisible — would continue. So would calls to senators. Having been caught unaware in May and last week, when Republicans revived “Trumpcare,” activists said they would keep pounding until the deadline had passed.

“You don’t want to leave anything to chance,” said Ben Wikler, the Washington director of MoveOn. “If more senators come out in opposition to the bill this week, that makes it less likely that they can credibly come back and support another repeal vote. It needs to be totally clear to them that electoral disaster would come from keeping their horrible campaign promise.”…

Apart from cautious optimism, what’s on the agenda for the day?

    Something new and exciting in my life….
    I have no trouble falling asleep at night.
    But for the last 7-10 days, I wake up sometime in the wee small hours (200-400am) and I can’t go back to sleep.
    Which of course makes me exhausted all day.
    Which is very frustrating, because I can’t get anything done.
    I also feel “flu-y”; achy, maybe a little lightheaded.
    Pah!

    what’s on the agenda for my day? Floating on a river, eating a bunch of pulled pork, and then hanging out around a bonfire the size of trump tower drinking too much beer with 2-300 of my closest friends. Until about 9 pm at which point I will turn into a pumpkin.

    City Counselor Julian Bush on Wednesday also called the allegations disturbing.

    A documentary filmmaker from Kansas City, visiting with his wife, said he was knocked unconscious during the sweep. Drew Burbridge, 32, said he never heard orders to disperse until officers started to advance, banging their batons and chanting, “Move back.”
    “I turned my camera off and asked if there was anywhere I could go, but I was denied the right to leave,” he said. “I didn’t want to be a part of this.”
    Officers ordered him to turn his camera off and get down on the ground, and he complied. “The only thing I cared about then was putting my arms around my wife,” he said. “I just, I just kept saying: ‘It’s going to be OK.’” Burbridge said officers then grabbed him by both his arms and dragged him away. “I just said: ‘I am a member of the media, I am not protesting, I am not resisting,’” Burbridge said.

    An officer sprayed his face with a chemical, his head was forced into the ground and an officer ripped his camera from his neck. Burbridge claims his hands were then bound by zip ties before two officers started kicking him in the back, neck, arm and legs while he lay restrained on the ground. He said he was knocked unconscious on the pavement for about 10 to 30 seconds. After he came to, Burbridge said an officer lifted his head by his hair and pepper sprayed him in the face again.

    And many many more, some worse, most just so so. This one made me laugh:

    Morgan Latham, 19, has bruises she said are from a police officer pulling her under her arms and getting shot with pepper pellets before she was arrested. “Honestly it felt like a drive-by shooting,” said Latham, a student at St. Louis Community College in Florissant.

    Latham said she heard police using racial slurs. “I don’t think it was them being racist, I think it was them wanting people to know they didn’t have any power,” she said.

    Totally and completely clueless white people (and my money would be that she was a protester), it’s right there in her face. She gives a perfect description of racism in action and finds a way to deny it is racism. This is why we can’t have nice things in America.

    Hurricanes, earthquakes and now –

    THE NUMBER of tremors recorded at Bali’s Mt Agung volcano has increased again late Saturday after a lull during the morning.

    Authorities say they still cannot predict when the mountain will erupt but with the threat level at its highest, an emergency response period has been declared.

    Hundreds of tremors, from deep within Mt Agung, are now being recorded daily as the majestic mountain rumbles into action for the first time in five decades.

    In the 12 hours, from midnight on Friday until noon today, a total of 198 tremors were recorded.

    The threat level was increased to four on Friday night, by the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation agency, the third time in the past week the level has been raised.

    And the exclusion zone was doubled to 12km from the summit, a calculation based on the track of ash cloud and lava from the last time Mt Agung erupted, back in 1963.

    Bali tourist officials have also become frustrated at exaggerated reporting causing panic among tourists. Mt Agung is about 72km from the densely populated tourist district of Kuta and concern is highest for those locals living in the villages surrounding the mountain itself. The main concern for tourists is the expected closure of the airport and delayed flights should the mountain erupt.

    Indonesian media is reporting that wild animals — including snakes and apes — are panicked by the stirring volcano and moving through settled areas.

    It’s been a growing trend over the past three days, the Tribun Kaltim news service says.

    Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said overnight that the hazardous zone had been increased from 9km to 12km, covering an area encompassing about 240,000 people and prompting further evacuations.     A 19-year-old man who spent 60 hours locked alone inside a gated southern Indiana cave says he feels lucky to be alive.

    Indiana University freshman Lukas Cavar was on a spelunking trip to Sullivan Cave about 10 miles south of Bloomington when he became separated on Sunday afternoon from 12 other members of the university’s caving club.

    After his parents filed a missing person report with university police, a high school friend informed the Caving Club’s president that Cavar was missing. Two club leaders immediately returned to the cave late on Tuesday after finding a pile of clothing in a vehicle club members used to travel to the cave on Sunday. They discovered Cavar uninjured and asleep behind the locked gate.

    “I’m really glad to be alive,” said Cavar, who returned to classes on Thursday and has no plans for another spelunking trip. “It feels like I’ve been given a second chance.”

    A message posted by the Caving Club’s president on a website for Indiana University student organizations said the club’s “rigorous protocols” for accounting for members during cave excursions had failed. “We had a failure in our leadership to closely follow all these safety procedures,” the message states.

    We’re heading out to the movies as is our usual Saturday custom, plus I’m making my weekly batch of slow cooker chili.

    I had a thought last night – Does Cassidy know what’s in the bill? I ask because I’ve heard him respond to questions about it and he sounds like someone who hasn’t actually read it. I realize that senators don’t write their own legislation but he sounds like someone just handed this thing to him and gave him some talking points.
