Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Not all heroes wear capes.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

One way or another, he’s a liar.

He really is that stupid.

A lot of you have questioned whether calls to Congress will really help in the fight against the tax plan. Your calls helped to win the health care fight earlier this year. Keep up the pressure: (202) 224-3121. #BadDealForWomen

— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) November 28, 2017

.

I know, I know, I’m tired of the “What GOP fustercluck do we need to fight to prevent *this* week?” rondelay too. But the Repub death cult is structured like the Taliban in Afghanistan — their one god (a multifaced being reflected by images of Ayn Rand, Hayek, both Koch brothers, and Sheldon Adelson) demands blood sacrifice, and blood that god shall have, lest the heavens fall… or their disappointed sugar daddies mount a primary challenge. Sure, it’ll further lessen any chance of the GOP surviving the next few election cycles, but the reelection races start next year!

If there's no deal by 12/8, it'll be the first time in the modern age that a party in control of the House, Senate and White House shuts down its government.

Repubs are essentially criticizing Dems for not assuming Trump was lying, but instead taking him at his word that there’s no deal to be made

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) November 28, 2017

… Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that Pelosi and Schumer “want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes,” adding, “I don’t see a deal!”

The Democratic leaders responded by canceling their plans to meet with Trump and GOP leaders at the White House to discuss a deal to keep the government open.

“Given that the president doesn’t see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead,” Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement. “If the President, who already said earlier this year that ‘our country needs a good shutdown,’ isn’t interested in addressing the difficult year end agenda, we’ll work with those Republicans who are, as we did in April.”

Schumer and Pelosi said they asked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to meet Tuesday afternoon instead, a request the GOP leaders rebuffed…

Ryan and McConnell attended the meeting and did not hide their displeasure with Pelosi and Schumer for withdrawing from the highly anticipated powwow…

[Maybe not the best noun there, Kemosabe]

Congressional leaders have declined to say how long of a short-term funding patch would be needed to avert a government shutdown on Dec. 8, although it’s expected to be at least a couple of weeks to give appropriators enough time to write complex omnibus spending legislation.

“I’m very hopeful we can avoid a shutdown,” Schumer told reporters. “Our Republican colleagues have shown in the past that they know with them in charge, a shutdown falls on their back. They’re running the show. The American people know they’re running the show.”…

Brand spanking new today on Amazon Prime, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (trailer). Not bad, not bad at all. Ping pongs from the comedic to the maudlin a bit too readily, perhaps, but that’s a forgivable sin.

Minor anachronisms (show takes place in the late 50s), also forgivable. The autos are luscious to look at but must all of them look like they were on the showroom floor 3 minutes ago (less forgivable)? One question though, how did they manage to sneak in, scoop up so much of my kitchenware to dress the set and return it before I noticed?

    Anyway, well worth checking out.

Actually, they are working on a special request for VA involvement in testing Vietnam vets, particularly those involved in river operations for liver flukes. These parasites cam live for decades without symptoms, but can cause a rare bile duct cancer, and symptoms appear when it is too late to do anything. The senator was a marine in Vietnam. My husband had about 22 gunboats under his command on the Mekong.

    Awwww, someone has some regrets.

This summer, I traveled across the Midwest, from Indianapolis to Kalamazoo to Racine, to talk with hundreds of manufacturing workers who lost their jobs to foreign countries. Many of them (some wearing “Make America Great Again” hats) agreed that Trump hasn’t lived up to his end of the deal.

“I don’t think he’s really going to come through, even though I hoped he would,” one laid-off worker told me.

“He pulled a bait-and-switch on us,” another said.

Maybe they can eat the hats when the food runs out. No sympathy. None whatsoever.

American International classic “Wild in the Streets” is on TCM right now. Oddly prescient but not about the youth takeover so much as the portrait of a malignant narcissist as POTUS. Shelley Winters, mother of the narcissist, is chainsmoking pot and talking about how successful her LSD therapy is going.

I heard hundreds of years ago that Matt didn’t think twice about hitting on women he should be staying away from. But I only heard he was forward and presumptuous, not physical.

    Good morning, everyone!

Anne, thanks for posting the Jeet Heer tweet. I just posted something similar in the North Korea thread, but I’ll repeat it here. The concern was expressed that the Tweeter-in-Chief would start a tail-wags-dog war. I said to look at his body language in this press availability and in every other one where he has something difficult to talk about. He hugs himself. He is so insecure and unloved that he has to hug himself. This is a frightened and cowardly man. Now, frightened and cowardly men do stupid things when they are desperate enough. What he said about North Korea was “We’ll take care of it.” That’s what you say when you have no idea what you’re going to do. And it looks like the people around him have convinced him to let someone else talk about substance – he’s done it yesterday with Mattis on North Korea and the day before with Kelly on the Code Talkers. In the case of the Code Talkers, he couldn’t resist dragging out his bigotry, but he called Kelly up to the podium to say the substance.

Anyhow, he’s not desperate enough to start a war yet.

And a very wise thread, to which I can add nothing, by Alex Wellerstein, a historian of nuclear weapons.

I gave a talk to some very bright high schoolers a few weeks ago, about how they should think about North Korea when they read about it in the news. Here is the gist of what I tried to get across: (thread)

Freaky night last night. So every month my friends and I go to the Irish Film Institute for a program they call Feast Your Eyes. You see a movie and then you get a surprise dinner based on the movie. Last night’s movie was “Good Time.” No one in the group had any clue what the movie was about. The opening scene showed NYC’s West Side Highway and someone leaned over and said “Oh are you gonna get homesick?” and I said “Nah”

Well oh holy nuts – the entire movie took place in my old neighbourhood. There is Elmhurst hospital, there are the courts on Queens Blvd and the bondsmen across the street, and oh my gosh, the just drove right past my old apartment building. It was both fun and weird all at the same time!!

Crappy movie, mind you, but so much fun. It was like I was back in NY for 2 hours. I had no idea I was returning to Queens when I walked into the theatre.

And Good Morning all. Matt Lauer’s firing made my day. I’ve decided I need to focus on fact that we have power and not to allow myself to become overwhelmed with feelings of powerlessness.I hold as my inspiration the Civil Rights activists I observed in my youth. Sarah Kenzidor tweeted that revoking net neutrality will destroy the resistance. I replied that Civil Rights activists used churches, flyers, black radio and their feet and grit and we would just need to be more creative. I don’t have luxury of my own despair and fear

@rikyrah: I think the current moment has been formented by Trump actually being elected. As much as we can say that rural/surbuban people were radicalized by Obama being elected, the converse can be said about minorities and women from Trump being elected.

People want women and minorities to shut up and stop bothering them with their plight, and we’re politely telling them to fuck off. As we should.

And yes I know I say that being a defender of Franken, but that is just more or me thinking he did wrong but didn’t do something politically fatally wrong. People can do bad and not have it rise to be the death penalty of their career immediately. But that makes me think that Laurer might have crossed the line into stalking/rape a lot more closely than the heads at NBC-Universal could have really accepted if he’s being terminated after 1 solid accusation with threats of others.

The fact that we just will not accept our collective lot to be ruled by the rural (suburban) diaspora means that we are violent radicals that have to be suppressed. For our own good mind you.

This is why the parties are getting so Balkanized, we in the base far better recognize what the other side is saying, while the upper reaches are still operating as if the Republicans have a level of respectability and comity that can be worked with.

I saw that too. I am surprised that trump attacks cnn but msnbc, not so much, because from afternoon to evening shows, there is a continual stream of guests and hosts who imply or outright say trump is delusional. Last night on msnbc, Ben Howe, Red State, said of evangelicals supporting immoral candidates that “they’ll do any rationalizations they have to in order to excuse any behavior they need to keep the world they way they think it looks”. Rationalization is the dominant behavior from Trump to most Republicans.

I’m halfway through reading Rolling Stone piece, Anatomy of Fake-News Scandal with a good timeline of how pizzagate went from online to the White House. It’s detective piece tracking the fake stories, how they spread and who followed/retweeted them it’s not surprising that the humans who glommed onto the bot fake stories are/were Republican from Trump, family, WH staff, advisors, politicos, rightwing media and voters. A 50 year old mother from PA tweeted the pizzagate story more than 4,000 times in five weeks because she “didn’t want Hillary to win at any cost” even though she didn’t know much about pizzagate, just stuff she found from her own “research” or from another follower. Republican rationalizers don’t need no stinking facts.

Borce Pejcev, Macedonian programmer who set up dozen of fake-news sites said, “Macedonians would have happily copied anti-Trump news too but unfortunately, there weren’t any good US pro-Clinton fake news sites to copy and paste”.

‘Megyn Kelly Today’ on Track to Deliver NBC’s Worst Sweeps Ratings Since 2000 (link)

While the month isn’t over yet, Kelly is on track to deliver historically low numbers for the critical November sweeps period. In fact, if things stay where they are, Kelly will log the lowest sweeps numbers of any period since NBC’s “Today” franchise first claimed the 9 a.m. hour in 2000. And we’re not just talking about the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic or total viewers — we’re talking about both the key demo and overall audience members. The dismal ratings appraisal even holds up when looking at adults 18-49.

Well, atleast Santa Claus is white.

@HeleninEire: Is Irish corned beef different from NY Jewish deli corned beef? There’s an Irish pub here in the Philly burbs (sounds fake, but it’s run by a couple of genuine Irishmen and seems pretty authentic) which we’ve been going to a lot lately, and I was avoiding one of my wife’s favorites, the “Reuben Boxty” because I figured I’d had plenty of Reubens in my life in non-Irish restaurants and I’d rather have the true experience.

Well, I finally got one and she was right, the corned beef is delicious and I could swear it’s a very different flavor from the corned beef I’m used to. And I’m not just comparing to cheap grocery-store stuff but the real thing in delis.

Incidentally, is a “boxty” a real thing? It’s a wrap, but they say the wrap is potato-based. I don’t ever remember seeing that word in Ireland, but I admittedly wasn’t there very long.

@rikyrah: TFW all your suspicions about what happened to Hillary Clinton are confirmed as some of the misogynistic scumbags get fired. *flames out of the side of my face gif*

    @bemused:

Borce Pejcev, Macedonian programmer who set up dozen of fake-news sites said, “Macedonians would have happily copied anti-Trump news too but unfortunately, there weren’t any good US pro-Clinton fake news sites to copy and paste”.

Are we supposed to be drawing a lesson from this? How could “anti-Trump fake news” gain any traction when the REAL Trump news, sensationally bad as it is, couldn’t gain any traction?

@SFAW: Beg to differ. Definition at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/diaspora:

    1
    capitalized Judaism
a : the Jews living outside Palestine or modern Israel members of the Diaspora
b : the settling of scattered colonies of Jews outside ancient Palestine after the Babylonian exile
c : the area outside ancient Palestine settled by Jews
    2
a : people settled far from their ancestral homelands members of the African diaspora
b : the place where these people live
c : the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland the black diaspora to northern cities

The fact that the first definition, capital-D, is specific to the Jews doesn’t mean that the word cannot be used properly per the small-d second definition.

My parents (who left WV for Baltimore MD in 1940) were part of a “redneck diaspora,” during which people moved in great numbers from Appalachia to industrial cities all over the USA to take up jobs as steelmaking, manufacturing & shipbuilding ramped up for the wars.
