Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

T R E 4 5 O N

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Republicans do not trust women.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Just in: Dinner for tomorrow's state dinner with the Macrons pic.twitter.com/UOaOoezCIL

— Kevin Liptak (@Kevinliptakcnn) April 23, 2018

Tonight is the Trump Occupancy’s first official state dinner, and somebody managed to persuade Lord Smallgloves that if he wanted a well-done steak with ketchup, he could eat his own meal early. (And you thought you hated *your* job.) Because the guest of honor is French, and/or because the only Democrat on the guest list is Louisiana Governor Bel Edwards, a Cajun-influenced side dish is included on the menu.

Possibly because the thought of sheep always gets bloviating wingnuts amorphously aroused, Erik Son of Erik, Founder of Red State Trike Farce Strike Force and Professional Christianist, decided to take public offense. Mockery ensued!

This menu is why I could never be President: https://t.co/GjDFxf24PM I'd serve fried chicken and mashed potatoes with sweet potato pie for dessert. None of this unpronounceable froo-froo garbage.

— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) April 23, 2018

Erick, that’s not why you could never be president.

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) April 23, 2018

Lamb & Jambalaya is unpronounceable? https://t.co/zJ8gJJ2K1h

— Jeet Heer (@HeerJeet) April 23, 2018

Jambalaya. I at least expected something nominally foreign to American palates like creme brûlée or bouillabaisse but no…he's intimidated by jamba-friggin-laya. Do you want to Supersize that mayonnaise slushy Erick? https://t.co/iSavlTOZkx

So exotic… pic.twitter.com/7NqTaORCFB

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) April 23, 2018

jambalaya, a food whose popularity is directly related to the fact that it was cheap and versatile

— b-boy bouiebaisse (@jbouie) April 23, 2018

It's a fucking Hank Williams song!

— Brien Jackson (@Brien_Jackson) April 23, 2018

Not to mention, man can’t even spell his slurs correctly…

It’s “frou frou,” ffs

(Any odds he’s already preparing a begging letter to his fans, whining about the damage inflicted by the cold, unsympathetic, God-hating lie-brals?)

I went to our local hippie grocery store yesterday, and they actually had ramps! Sauteed them for dinner. Delicious, but boy did they onionize the house. Opened all the windows. Four cats sitting on windowsills gasping for fresh air. Two dogs choosing to stay outside when the people are inside.

I should feel guilty but I will do it all again if the store still has ramps today.

Thing about conservatives is how they treasure conformity. Thus, if they are allowed to run loose, we will have euthanasia vans crisscrossing the country to kill the uninsured; the “paper bag test” will put people in jail; and women kept barefoot, pregnant, and chained to the stove; we will also have a cuisine that is based on Wonder Bread.

@Sab: you are not a bad daughter! So many people are in denial about the safety issues and basic hygiene issues that start to occur with elderly memory impaired family members. His safety is most important!
My own grandmother stayed at home as long as we could have her, no dementia at all, but she fell often even with grab bars installed everywhere. She finally agreed she would be safer in assisted living after she fractured her skull on the sink when she fell in the bathroom again. She was 87. Ironically, because they encourage all residents who were able to walk to the dining room and attend exercise classes, she got stronger and regained enough balance that she was able to come home after three years, and lived with us again until she was 96, when she went back into the same facility, but in the nursing home side until she passed away about a year later.
The additional safety and care for your dad can improve the quality of his life. You’re doing the right thing.

Rhubarb crisp is amazing, and super easy to make. One of my favorite desserts (probably partially nostalgia). You can serve it warm with ice cream, and you can add apples or strawberries if you like. Although I prefer straight rhubarb. You just make a crisp topping (oats/brown sugar/flour/butter/Cinnamon/nutmeg) and put a layer in the bottom of a baking dish, then cube the rhubarb and layer it on, then pour a cup of simple syrup (hot sugar/water/vanilla), then top with the rest of the crisp. Then bake. Sandwiching the rhubarb between topping keeps it from getting too soupy. There’s also a recipe for shortbread rhubarb bars I want to try, but first I have to find some more rhubarb.

That’s not exactly a correct description. Coons voted present because one of the Republican Senators went to what was described as his best friend’s funeral, which made the vote 10-9 instead of 10-10, but even at 10-10 McConnell would have been allowed to move the nomination to the floor (and would have). So it literally made no difference whether Coons voted or not.

I can’t imagine this White House taking the trouble to accommodate anyone’s dietary needs.

oh please! If they knew there were Muslims or vegans it would be pork, with a side of pork smothered in sausage gravy.

I think crisp and crumble are somewhat interchangeable, probably regionally. In my head crisp has oats and crumble does not — but that’s probably just a personal distinction. For crisp topping it’s flour/sugar/oats/melted butter, for crumble, it’s flour/sugar/cold butter worked in until it’s “crumbly.”

Why isn’t anyone being investigated for a crime in ECOT scandal – especially when a whistleblower detailed months ago how school leaders directed staffers to cook the books and rip off millions from taxpayers?

Columbus Dispatch. ECOT is a huge online school in Ohio that they closed. But they closed it after the school ripped off 60 million dollars.

So- Mike DeWine is the GOP candidate for governor but he’s currently the AG and he never conducted a criminal inquiry into ECOT. BUT, when Cordray was AG, Cordray sued ECOT. Then Mike DeWine took over and the investigation died or was killed. Which leads us to the 60 million they robbed under DeWine’s watch.

The thing about Cordray is, unlike Kucinich, Cordray actually did something about these frauds. Kucinich only jumped on the bandwagon after his stint at Fox and his entry into the race. He never did shit.

Which is what makes the Lefty love of him so disappointing. They’re just really shallow. These people have actual records of work. One of them did some work and the other didn’t. It’s not even close.

Mulvaney, the Office of Management and Budget director who took over as interim CFPB director in November after Richard Cordray stepped down, has made no secret of his distaste for the agency he temporarily runs.

If we have large tomatoes, I seed them and cut them up. If we’re using cherry tomatoes, I slice them in half. Once the tomatoes are prepped, I throw them in a Dutch oven, mash them up a bit and simmer them with some lemon juice, brown sugar and kosher salt. I usually add red pepper flakes and sometimes cinnamon or ginger, and then stir until the moisture cooks down and the jam is thick and bubbly. That’s all there is to it!

Actually, they have. A lot of people have adjusted their withholding and see that they are not getting squat. People who have gotten projections along with their tax prep see that they will actually owe money for 2018. A new study suggests that half of taxpaying home owners will get no value from mortgage deductions. Meanwhile corporations are busy using their tax cuts to buy back stock. They are not hiring more or raising wages.

    Soubise:

The original recipe, going back to at least Escoffier, calls for cooking onions in butter until very soft but not at all browned, then adding bechamel to the pot and simmering them together before finally puréeing them into a smooth, thick sauce. (There’s also a variation with rice in place of the bechamel, though even Escoffier recommends against it.) Since then, the sauce has changed a bit, most often lightened, if you can call it that, with cream in place of the bechamel.

    Source

Obviously, Chef Comerford (who has been at the White House forever) opted for a “burnt” version that is probably even sweeter because of the additional caramelization.

The thing on that menu that I would like most is the creme fraiche ice cream. I have made cream cheese ice cream, and this is just a variety of that. It’s tangy and wonderful. At my house we often have rack of lamb for special dinners. Before my oldest daughter became a vegan, she and her sister would starve themselves throughout the day to be especially hungry when I made it.

I think that good nights sleep tells you how hard this is, that you haven’t been getting that. It isn’t being a bad kid at all.
These aren’t easy decisions but they are better in the long run. My sister couldn’t think of putting dad in a home so she tried to take care of him herself, and hired a live in to help 6 days a week. She lasted 6 weeks and was a wreck. And dad was actually pretty good as an Alzheimers patient. But it was overwhelming, non stop and it gets very personal, very fast. This was her dad and he’s helpless, actually worse than just helpless, it requires constant attention.

From this site, President George W. Bush served Queen Elizabeth “spring pea soup with American caviar to start, Dover sole almondine, followed by saddle of spring lamb with chanterelle sauce, arugula salad with champagne dressing and farmhouse cheese, and concluded with meringue and spun sugar “rose blossoms.” Wait–he was a RINO…

Nixon had a dinner for the Apollo 11 astronauts, featuring “an eclectic and decadent menu of around-the-world delights that culminated in “moon rock” petit fours and an original dessert: the Clair de Lune, a sweet moon-shaped confection of marzipan, meringue, and blackberry sauce, topped with an American flag”. But we don’t talk about Nixon, unless we’re Roger Stone.

Reagan should be safe, especially the dinner for Margaret Thatcher: “pompano supreme in champagne, roast rack of lamb with mint sauce, hearts of lettuce and brie, and Grand Marnier soufflé for dessert. California sparkling and vintage wines were there to accompany it all.” Dear me–and Mrs. Reagan tasted it all in advance to make sure it was up to standard. But wait–it gets worse: “And to cap it all off, the Dance Theatre of Harlem performed a special piece choreographed by Arthur Mitchell after dinner.”

What have we done for the French before? According to the National Archives, President and Mrs. Ford served their visiting French President “a menu of Columbia River salmon, sauce verte, filet of beef, artichokes Saint Germain, mushroooms Provencale, bibb lettuce salad, brie cheese, basket grand marnier, petits fours, and demitasse.” Demitasse! No one tell Erick son of Erick!

Oh, and there’s a chain of barbecue restaurants in Kansas City (“nice” barbecue restaurants, for people who don’t want to walk up to a counter and give their order) that serves crème brûlée. It’s quite popular.

    Meanwhile in local, what-the-hell-were-they-thinking news:
(these idiots are lucky no one in the theater had a REAL gun)

    https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/policereports/article/Five-juveniles-arrested-for-threatening-12856638.php

“An apparent prank by five juveniles led to their arrest Sunday night after the group allegedly faked a stick-up at a Summer Street movie theater, blowing off cap guns before running back outside.”

The emphasis of the local papers and news stations on “children” “juveniles” “prank” and “cap guns” leans me to believe the kids are Stamford locals and probably white

My brothers used to play with cap guns, from even a short distance they don’t look that different from the real thing. Shooting off caps makes them look and sound even more like the real thing.

Emma comma first, den I comma, den two assa comma together, then I comm again, two assa comm again, I comm again, pee-pee twice, den I comma last.”

The woman turns beet red & says, Officer! Arrest that man for public indecency! Cop replies, For what? For spelling “Mississippi”?

    (Ollllld joke.)

@Quinerly – He may be able to avoid state charges due to Illinois law but I am hoping the families of the dead and the injured sue him in civil court. He is an accessory to murder, he supplied the weapons. The injured may very likely suffer permanent harm from the shooting, including years of expensive surgeries.

He (the shooter) also stole a car very recently which local police tracked to his home via it’s onboard GPS…he was not charged (WTF!!)

@a thousand flouncing lurkers (was fidelio): So basically, Trump eliminated the fish course. I would love to try the meringue and spun sugar “rose blossoms” because I love meringue of all kinds. I didn’t even know there was more than one kind of meringue until I was an adult and the waiter in a Belgian restaurant tried to explain it to me. I think I had too much wine by that point.

@EmbraceYourInnerCrone: I think they actually did not have his name and did not know that it was him until they found evidence linked to the BMW when they searched his apartment after the shooting. They also apparently did not try to find out beforehand.

@EmbraceYourInnerCrone: I doubt if the father would be an accessory to the murder. If giving him the guns violated some law (I can’t actually tell whether it did or didn’t) then he would be charged under that law, which could, depending, result in more serious charges such as reckless endangerment or even felony murder (that’s probably a stretch). Civil liability is not a given. The issue is foreseeability. If the son had ever threatened anyone with bodily harm, then I think the plaintiffs could get past that hurdle. If not, then it might be hard to prove that it was reasonably foreseeable that he would commit murder. Basically, any violence in his past would be the key to the father’s civil liability IMO.

@Sab: My father went thru a period of what the docs called ‘stroke-induced Alzheimers’ – fortunately we found some great doctors, nurses, and therapists, and a lot of prayers, and ‘got him back’ for a few years – but caring for someone in that shape is exhausting, and my heart goes out to you and to him.

    to change the subject

A few decades ago (I was young and the rulebook of the world was an earlier edition) I acquired _The Guys Cook Book_ (or something with similar name). One of the final chapters began “Now we will try some of the great dishes of French cuisine. French food is much like French women – they have flowery names and an elegant appearance, but the essential parts are familiar, and they are not that difficult to make.”

@Betty Cracker: Hey! The WH staff are high-level pros. Despite the degrading presence of the current preznit, Cristeta Comerford, appointed by PBO to be the WH head chef, and her crew are more than capable of producing great food. I’m sure that dinner eill be delicious, and that deliciousness will have nothing whatsoever to do with djt or melania.
