Breaking: The US is monitoring intelligence that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s health is in grave danger following a surgery, a US official with direct knowledge tells me.
— Jim Sciutto (@jimsciutto) April 21, 2020
Jim Sciutto at CNN has just reported that Kim Jong Un is in grave danger after surgery.
The US is monitoring intelligence that North Korea’s leader, is in grave danger after a surgery, according to a US official with direct knowledge.
Kim recently missed the celebration of his grandfather’s birthday on April 15, which raised speculation about his well-being. He had been seen four days before that at a government meeting.
CNN has reached out to the CIA, National Security Council and the State Department for comment. CNN has also sought comment from the South Koreans.
Gathering intelligence out of North Korea is notoriously difficult — one of the most challenging targets for US intelligence.
North Korea tightly controls any information surrounding its leader, who is treated almost like a deity within the country. His absences from official state media often spark speculation and rumors about his health.
North Korea has no free press and is often a black hole when it comes to the country’s leadership. Analysts are heavily reliant on scanning state media dispatches and watching propaganda videos for any semblance of a clue.
Kim last appeared in North Korean state media on April 11. April 15 — North Korea’s most important holiday, the anniversary of the birth of the country’s founding father, Kim Il Sung — came and went without any official mention of Kim Jong Un’s movements.
Experts are unsure of what to make of Kim’s absence from any festivities celebrating his grandfather. When North Korean leaders have not shown up to these important celebrations in the past, it has portended major developments. But it has also turned out to be nothing.
Kim Jong Il’s absence from a parade celebrating North Korea’s 60th anniversary in 2008 was followed by rumblings that he was in poor health. It was later revealed he had a stroke, after which his health continued to decline until his death in 2011.
Kim Jong Un disappeared from the public eye for more than a month in 2014, which also prompted speculation about his health. He returned sporting a cane, and days later South Korean intelligence said that he had a cyst removed from his ankle.
“It’s easy to be wrong on this one,” said John Delury, a professor of international relations at Yonsei University in Seoul.
This story is breaking and will be updated.
Sciutto’s reporting follows up on reporting from earlier today by Reuters that was a lot less alarming.
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is receiving treatment after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure early this month, a South Korean media report said, amid speculation over Kim’s health following his absence from a key anniversary event.
North Korea marked the anniversary of the birthday of its founding father and Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung, as a national holiday on April 15, but Kim was not seen in attendance.
Daily NK, a speciality website run mostly by North Korean defectors, cited unidentified sources inside the isolated state saying Kim is recovering at a villa in the Mount Kumgang resort county of Hyangsan on the east coast after getting the procedure on April 12 at a hospital there.
Reporting from inside North Korea is notoriously difficult, especially on matters concerning the country’s leadership, given tight controls on information.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, declined to comment on the report.
Kim’s health has deteriorated in recent months due to heavy smoking, obesity and overwork, the Daily NK report said.
“My understanding is that he had been struggling (with cardiovascular problems) since last August but it worsened after repeated visits to Mount Paektu,” a source was quoted as saying, referring to the country’s sacred mountain.
Kim left for the hospital after presiding over a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party’s politburo on April 11, where Kim was publicly last seen, the report said.
Because what we need right now is an unstable DPRK!

North Korea is one of the world’s last absolute monarchies. Should it come to that, who will succeed Jong Un?

@Amir Khalid: His sister would be my guess if it will be tolerated. She spent a lot of time representing him at the last Winter Olympics. But I’m sure there’s a living male relative somewhere. And there may even be some sons. The question is whether the military leadership decides to either just keep him on life support and rule in his name or if they just take over and cut out the middle man.

Kim was absent from a military celebration last week. I was wondering about COVID-19 at that time.
All this uproar is apparently from ONE report from the unreliable North Korean media.
It’s possible that Kim has something wrong with him, but let’s wait for a bit more confirmation.

Why can’t we exchange Trump supporters for a random group of immigrants? It would be a much better deal.

It’s not impossible that Kim is having medical problems. Check out the thread on the Anna Fifield tweet I posted above. Fifield is one of the top reporters on North Korea. Kim has heart issues. It’s also pretty clear that North Korea has more of a COVID-19 issue than they are admitting. Nobody knows how a succession would go.

On the one hand, I’ve felt like I’ve had my hair on fire for a month or more trying to convince people how exponential growth goes. Every day another state official is blindsided.
On the other, I’ve been trying to damp down the preprint frenzy where we all want to hear that we’ve had mild cases of COVID and are now immune. Heck, I’d like that. But press releases from Silicon Valley geniuses don’t meet my requirements for believing that. They’re not even bothering with preprints any more.

@Brachiator: Gantz capitulated to Bibi and agreed to a unity government. The agreement gives Bibi everything he wants and the way it is worded, in 18 months when Bibi is supposed to turn over the prime ministership to Gantz, there is nothing in the agreement to prevent Bibi from immediately bringing down the government, remaining PM in a caretaker capacity until the election, and screwing Gantz. Also, they’ll be annexing the West Bank after 1 July. And Bibi gets control over appoint all the new judges and the attorney general and his protege gets to be speaker of Knesset. Gantz just completely capitulated even though he had the ability to form a government without Bibi.

If North Korea wanted to tamp down on the speculation they could try a little transparency. Might as well have fun with it. A couple weeks ago the speculation was about Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. Who inexplicably also disappeared. Until he reappeared.
I don’t think North Korea is going to escape the coronavirus. Even though they aren’t reporting any cases. Their economy somewhat depends on smuggling across the Chinese and even Russian borders. Apparently a LOT of powerful party and military officials have fingers in the smuggling business. So it is going to leak across the borders.

Weird idea for a unity government. Has a rotating prime minister system ever worked anywhere?
It certainly seems like a total capitulation. Does Gantz get anything substantial out of this deal at all? I don’t know anything about Gantz, but I cannot believe he is totally stupid. What does he do while Bibi is prime minister? Even if this is a total surrender, he must have seen, been told something that led him to believe that this was a necessary decision.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: The word “temporary” may be doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Like everything else Trump does, this one is probably good for one or two news cycles and then in November he will run ads saying he “temporarily” reduced immigration to protect the country and we will all be gas lit for the 9999th time.
In practice it will probably be used by the Steven Miller followers in DHS to exclude the brown immigrants they don’t want while letting the wealthy and white ones through.

@Brachiator: “Why can’t we exchange Trump supporters for a random group of immigrants? It would be a much better deal.”
I’ve been arguing for that for a while now, but I can’t figure out how to convince anyone to take the Trumpians. It’d have to be a deal involving a lot of cash too. And maybe future draft picks.
If some country accepted them they’d instantly be worse off and for an indefinite period into the future.

I bet whoever replaces him won’t be more crazy or as unpredictable. They might get a less insane leader. Let’s hope they get someone saner. The people of North Korea have suffered enough. They deserve someone who will look out for them.

The ambiguous wording of that sentence is no accident. They want you to (preposterously) swallow that “a US official” has direct knowledge that Kim Jong Un is in grave danger, but all they are really claiming is that “a US official” has direct knowledge that the US is monitoring intelligence.
