Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

“Alexa, change the president.”

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Bark louder, little dog.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Let me file that under fuck it.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

People are weird.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

All hail the time of the bunny!

On The Road – J R in WV – Westward Look Guest Ranch Gardens

J R in WV

My last trip to Arizona was January-February, 2019. My last WV cousin flew out with me and spent a week, which was how long he was willing to leave his puppy Indica in the Puppy guest ranch back home.

So his last day we drove into Tucson and spent the night at the Westwood Look Guest Ranch, which I had never stayed at as a guest before, although I had visited the resort for mineral specimen shows which are held there in early February each winter as part of the huge Tucson Gem and Mineral show, which does several billions of dollars of business in collectable rocks every winter over about 3 or 4 weeks, culminating in a huge show at the Convention Center downtown.

There are literally dinosaur and mastodon skeletons, precious gem stones, crystals, crafts and collectables from all over the world, in most every hotel in town. I have bought rocks from guys who spoke Zero English, we used a calculator we passed back and forth to show asked price and bid price until we came together. To this day I’m not sure which continent he was from!

So while we waited for dinner to be delivered to the room, I went out and took a few pictures of the gardens, which are quite different in feel from Lodge on the Desert, but surely as well done. A larger ranch with horses, pools, golf, etc, the Westward Look is about 6 miles north of the Lodge into the foothills of the Catalina Mountains. Tucson is squeezed in a basin between several mountain ranges, and two National Parks east and west of town.

I picked out these 8 pictures because they’re different from the Lodge on the Desert photos, yet similar in some ways.

A very shady spot, unusual for Arizona, obviously the Westwood Look is much newer than the Lodge on the Desert, uses more modern building methods, but has good taste in gardens on the grounds.

Taken with an Olympus TG-5 camera, f3.2 for 1/640 sec at 32mm, ISO 100. I tuned exposures with an editing tool to get both the sunlit mountains and the shady foliage to look OK. You learn something every day!

Here’s the card you’ll get when you eventually get the Covid-19 vaccine.

Everyone will get a card “they can put in their wallet that will tell them what they had and when their next dose is due,” says Dr. Kelly Moore of the Immunization Action Coalition. https://t.co/pLj8YnH02T pic.twitter.com/66CIDc246T

On The Road After Dark – ljt – Parks in Fall

by WaterGirl|  December 3, 202010:00 pm| 18 Comments

Today, after a pause for our special Election Respite series, and then our Fall Colors series,  this seemed like the perfect post to carry us into Parks After Dark.  We don’t have a lot of these, so if you have any park photos you would like to share, please send them in.  National Parks, State Parks, local parks, all are welcome!  ~WaterGirl

ljt

A few months ago, I shared photos from a whirlwind trip that my daughter and I took through 8 national parks in 8 days. Several folks asked me to share more photos from the trip, and since these were taken in November 2018, they fit for both Parks and Fall Colors.

Thank you WaterGirl and everyone who contributes to these threads. I rarely comment, but I am here for them and appreciate them every day.

people are transitioning from bad election tweets to just generally bad opinions and i feel like we are already mending and it’s not even january 20th. upward and onward.

It’s only just becoming clear how much the squatting misadministration has kept even the ‘neutral arbiters’ stressed. You may no longer consciously notice the jackhammer chorus next door, but it’s a pure physical relief when they finally stop…

The 2021 Pets of Balloon Juice Calendars are ready to order!

Calendar A

2021 Balloon Juice Pet Calendar: Calendar A

Calendar B

2021 Pets of Balloon Juice: Calendar B

You can click this link to order and you can order by clicking the special blue box up top.

If you have pets in the calendars and have not yet reviewed the calendars, please do so before placing your order.  You will find the pages of each calendar in the links in the sidebar.

If you find a problem, corrections can still be made.  But the calendar has to be changed BEFORE you place your order with Cafe Press.  The calendars are printed on demand by Cafe Press, and there’s no way to stop an order once you place it.

If you find an issue:

  1. Notify us in this post
  2. Wait for us to let you know that it has been fixed and the page has been updated
  3. Review the calendar again to verify all is good
  4. Then place your order.

Calendars are $25 each.  We planned to offer $5 off if you ordered both Calendar A and Calendar B, but Cafe Press doesn’t offer a way to do that.  So all calendars are $25 each.

Anyone who orders 3 or more 2021 Pets of Balloon Juice calendars will get $5 off the “pet wallpaper” we are also offering this year.  The wallpaper purchases won’t go through Cafe Press, so we’ll do one thing at a time here, and I will explain more about the wallpaper in another post.  Just wanted to let you know that we’ll be doing something to thank folks who couldn’t get the original deal we hoped to offer.

Proceeds from the calendar go to our new pet rescue this year:  Wet Mountain Animal Welfare.

2021 Pets of Balloon Juice Calendars Are Ready To Order.

Questions?  (aka What did I miss?)

Update on 12/4: I am closing comments on this post so I don’t miss any corrections that need to be made.  Please add calendar comments and corrections to the most recent calendar post.  I will have one a day for a few days in order to catch everyone.

Cat on a Hot Tar Roof (Open Thread)

Cat on a Hot Tar Roof (Open Thread)
A ceramic cat has survived on the roof of the Adams and Jennings funeral home in Tampa, for 70 years. They knocked down the old building, and put the cat on the new structure. [ SCOTT KEELER | Times ]

I’ve lived in or within a hundred miles of the City of Tampa for decades, but there’s a ceramic cat on the roof of a funeral home that has been around a lot longer than I have. I remember noticing it as a child, and yesterday, the Tampa Bay Times finally unraveled the mystery of that cat in a delightful story.

A ceramic cat on a funeral home? Why? Turns out the cat was originally attached to an antique store and tea house that became a funeral home in 1962. And there were originally TWO cats, one black and one white. The black cat went with the antique store owners when they retired and sold the building, and that cat met a sad fate in a harsh Maryland winter.

The funeral home owners tried to get rid of the white ceramic cat in 2007 when the building was demolished and rebuilt, but no dice:

At that point, Stacy Adams, who had followed her father Mike Adams into the funeral business, planned to retire the cat, placing it in a nice shadow box to display indoors. The cat’s fans would not allow that.

“Too many people came by asking about it,” Adams said.

“People were stopping by in the middle of funerals while I’m parking cars going, ‘hey man, where’s the cat?’”

Just thought I’d share this local oddity. Go read the whole thing if you need a fun diversion.
