Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Books are my comfort food!

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

All hail the time of the bunny!

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

“They all knew.”

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

How stupid are these people?

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Light Solstice Reading Club?

Light Solstice Reading Club

For many of us, we’re approaching the time of year where we read Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather; a lucky few may even read it for the first time. In this solstice classic, Death takes over for a thinly-veiled Santa Claus figure. I’ve only read it once, but I seem to recall that hijinks ensue.

I remembered this during the Pratchett thread the other day, and thought I’d ask the jackaltariat if you’d be interested in doing a little light-reading-for-the-holidays book club. We can meet here (maybe even with an embedded chat?) to talk about them. Obviously this would be the Christmas entry–but it would be cool to read a fun romp about a different seasonal holiday, too.

(Update: important note: you do not need to have read a single other Discworld book to read this one, or most other Discworld books)

Now, I know that asking you to read two books is a little silly, but I thought I’d gauge interest. Any takers? Just as importantly, any suggestions?

At the very least, let’s do Hogfather! Here’s a wonderful excerpt to wet your whistle. (For those who don’t know, Death speaks in ALL CAPS, which is how you can tell he’s a frequent correspondent of John Cole’s.)

“All right,” said Susan. “I’m not stupid. You’re saying humans need… fantasies to make life bearable.”

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

“Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—”

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

“So we can believe the big ones?”

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

“They’re not the same at all!”

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME… SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

“Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what’s the point—”

MY POINT EXACTLY.

(Picture is from a comic version of same; the novel is of course done only with words. Click to embiggen.)

I’ve already binge-watched Season 4, which was pretty good, IMO. The mister and I also just finished up The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix — highly recommended. (It’s about chess, not royalty.)

Did a grocery run earlier to lay in supplies for a two-person Thanksgiving. I’m making Ina’s turkey roulade, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls and pumpkin pie. Plus extra stuffing and fresh cranberry sauce. It will be way too much.

It’s dark and cloudy today. The forecast calls for rain, but it’s just clouds and mist so far. The weather will likely deter us from taking a boat ride, but we did yesterday and saw this pretty anhinga in a tree:

COVID-19 Coronavirus Updates: Saturday/Sunday, Nov. 21-22

In recent months, wearing a mask has wrongfully become a question of politics. Dr. @celinegounder, member of the Biden Transition COVID Advisory Board, says, “It’s like politicizing toilet paper. A mask is a basic hygienic measure. This is not a political statement.” #velshi pic.twitter.com/V8ekvpfZVq

A Temple Full of Sociopaths

This is astounding and infuriating:

A Hasidic synagogue in Brooklyn planned the wedding of a chief rabbi’s grandson with such secrecy it was able to host thousands of maskless celebrants without the city catching on.

Despite a surge in COVID-19 cases, guests crammed shoulder-to-shoulder inside the Yetev Lev temple in Williamsburg for the Nov. 8 nuptials — stomping, dancing and singing at the top of their lungs without a mask in sight, videos obtained by The Post show.

Organizers schemed to hide the wedding of Yoel Teitelbaum, grandson of Satmar Grand Rabbi Aaron Teitelman, from “the ravenous press and government officials,” says a detailed account in the Yiddish newspaper Der Blatt, the publication of the Satmar sect.

“Due to the ongoing situation with government restrictions, preparations were made secretly and discreetly, so as not to draw attention from strangers,” the paper reported in its Nov. 13 edition.

And they are PROUD of themselves. Seriously, fuck each and every single one of them, and I legit hope a bunch of them get sick and die. I am tired of being the bigger person, and these folks stay within their own community a good deal, so fuck them all.

There is only so much you can do to try to keep people safe.

TV Shows Are Back On The Air

by WaterGirl|  November 21, 20207:00 pm| 134 Comments

TV shows started back up a couple of weeks ago.  Some of them, anyway.

What do you want to see in TV shows?  Put aside safety concerns for the moment.   What do you want to see?  Shows that reflect the old normal, with no mask-wearing and no references to the pandemic?  Or do you like seeing the new reality reflected in the visuals and the story lines of returning shows?

What’s it going to be like, years from now, for folks watching the shows from this year where people are masked and are talking about the pandemic?  That will certainly tie shows to this particular point in time.  Will it affect the shelf life of those shows?

I have noticed multiple shows with plot lines related to black lives matter, though they don’t say those words.  That, I see as a good thing.

I also find myself wondering about how they are filming these.  Did they all quarantine separately, and then together?   Are they all set up in a safe bubble now, filming the new seasons, but with no outside contact but the actors and the crews?  What about their families?

Is anyone watching any returning shows, or is it all streaming, all the time?
