I don’t have much to talk about tonight since I am trying to not think about politics. Joe Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee, Trump is going to be the Republican nominee and the only thing in question about that is whether he will be in a jail cell or not.
It rained here- hard enough that you could hear the rain, I have no idea if this is normal or this is because I dragged it with me off them thar hills. If the latter is the case you can better believe I will capitalize on that newfound ability. I will indeed.
Any movie or tv selections? I will cut the first person who says Midsommar or that other one.

It is normal. And then, soon, it will go a long time without raining. And when it returns, it will be with haboobs and flash flooding. There’s no gentle, refreshing rainfalls. It’s Wrath of FSM or SUN!

Had an earnest conversation with my 19yr old daughter today. Her initial position was that she couldn’t vote for Biden because of his support of Israel. I believe I helped her understand that she can be firmly opposed to that but that unless the players change a vote for anyone else but Biden is a vote for Trump. It was instructive for me to better understand what the younger ones are most concerned with. We agreed we are looking forward to the next election when we may have a young progressive able to effectively run.

@kindness: Monsoon is in the late summer, and it is big rainstorms (like flash flooding and trees breaking) and dust storms. There are also winter rains that, every few years, are actually hail or graupel. Then there’s long periods of dryness in between.

I’d suggest THEM! A giant mutant ant movie is always appropriate.

Welcome to AZ and yes enjoy the rain and cool weather while we can we get limited days of it.
for a tv show I can’t recommend Mr InBetween enough. It’s like an Australian breaking bad centered around a hitman/fixer like Dexter in terms of bad guys and has a daughter he’s raising. Sooooo good

Also, US policy toward Israel is not wholly decided by the president, nor could any president just unilaterally decide to do a 180 on it because some — I’m sorry — ignorant teenagers want it that way. I’m glad you were able to talk some sense into her, and I hope it included asking her why she thinks tens of millions of people in this country — POC, queer people, trans people, Muslims, Jews, disabled people, women, etc — should suffer in service of her single-issue focus that she probably only adopted recently.

@kindness: Monsoon rains are supposed to come at the end of July here in AZ. They’ve been anemic at best for the last few years. The rain we are experiencing now is our “winter” weather and typically tapers off before January is over. It has also been pathetic in recent years. So, as amused as I am about John being able to conjure rain (via bizarre naked mopping rituals), it isn’t true.

@BretH:
I am a bit astonished at how quickly and passionately young people have adopted the Palestinians as the Oppressed People flavor of the season. It must be because Israel is a US ally, and therefore the pro-Palestinan groups figure we have more leverage than we do, for example, against Russia in its ongoing obliteration of Ukraine. Or China, in its obliteration of the Uyghurs. No leverage there, so no point advocating for Ukrainians or Uyghurs. I guess.
I also wonder why young people – the ones most vulnerable to the revocation of minority rights, women’s rights, and environmental protection under the GOP – don’t seem to care as much about those, to the point where they’re willing to facilitate the election of Trump and people like Trump.
I honestly don’t get it.

@CaseyL: I believe that its a well cultivated plan on social media from the people who have the money. When I review the targeted work that was done on behalf of Trump in 2016, this pro-palestinian movement seems very similar.
It helps that the way that the Israeli government is behaving reinforces this, yet the public outcry in Israel itself is very real and we hear next to nothing about it… There also seems to be a deliberate memory holing of what Hamas launched and their position as the de facto Government of Gaza….
While the Biden Administration is doing their best to mitigate what is going on, Netanyahu has little interest in being moderated nor are there many actors attempting to rein in Hamas to the table. Could look at who benefits and the usual suspects are Russia and the Saudis. So many of our youth have little understanding that while the US could cut off funding for military material, as soon as they do so where does Israel go? Few of them have any understanding of how we got here and for them, the events of the 67 war, the 73 war and the Munich Olympics are as far in their rearview mirrors as WWII was for us.
I agree with the younguns that our relationship with Israel has to change, but until the people of Israel kick Bibi out (and they ARE trying), that change will be blocked by Netanyahu’s own self interest (and those of his allies).

They’re assuming that Biden will win, so they can free-ride and focus on whatever issue exercises them the most. B/c if they *actually* thought that their refraining from voting for Biden would install TFG, they’d fucking vote for Biden.

I never saw a previous season but stumbled onto season 5 and it was a hoot. Mrs Japa and I just recently started watching series on the streaming networks and, on advice of good friends watched Three Pines on Prime. It was only one season and wasn’t picked up for a second, which pissed me off, specially with the way season 1 ended. Anyway, recommend watching two episodes at a time. A major social message involved, along with good, old fashioned, crime solving.

“hard enough that you could hear the rain”
I live on the south Oregon coast, I hear the rain when it rains because it almost always comes down heavy enough to make noise, especially on leaves. In fact I can hear it right now with the sound of the angry ocean in the background.
We’re averaging just over an inch a day and at 22.94 inches for the year.

I’ve been telling people about Astrid since season 1. Very good, non-sterotyped approach to an autistic character, and the character development is supported by lots of subtle and often poignant moments. The meetings of her social skills group for fellow autistics is often funny in how it shows their puzzlement at what makes “normies” tick. Highly recommended.
I normally only watch an hour or two of anything, but I’m probably going to start watching The Bear next. Gets rave reviews, and set in my hometown, what’s not to like.

Movie: Godzilla Minus One. Right now, it’s only playing in a couple of theaters here.
But… the director also made a black-and-white cut called Godzilla Minus One Minus Color that is going to get a (probably relatively limited) US release starting next weekend. He apparently put a lot of care into the B/W version, says that in some ways it’s the scariest version of the movie.
Since Minus One is a period piece that in many ways evokes the spirit of the somber 1954 original, black and white might be the most appropriate way to see it (though it’s a more hopeful movie, ultimately, than Ishiro Honda’s original was).
Regardless, it’s not just a good monster movie but a great movie. Often, with Godzilla films you just want to get past the human-characters plot bits to watch the monster stomp the city. With this one, that doesn’t happen–you care for these people, you really don’t want them to get hurt and as a result, the monster is as terrifying as it’s ever been. As in the original, Godzilla is more a destroying force of vengeful nature than the quasi-superhero he became as the series went on.
The US “Monsterverse” movies seem to be going that other route, evoking more the spirit of the kid-friendly monster smackdowns with crazy science-fiction plots of the late 1960s. It’s unusual that we’ve got two Godzillas running concurrently now, but I guess it lets you take your pick.

@Chetan Murthy: They argue that we’re the morally obtuse ones, for pressuring them to vote for Biden instead of pressuring Biden to change his policies so that they can vote for him.
I mean, I do see their point–if you won’t threaten to withhold your vote, what leverage do you have over policy? Biden has no incentive to change his ways unless there’s a real risk. Using Donald Trump as a sort of bomb that threatens to blow up the United States unless their demands are met is a crude tactic, but maybe it’s the only one they have.
The only problem is, I suspect that if Biden adopted the policy they prefer (basically, cutting off support for Israel until they completely change their policy toward the Palestinians, which will probably never happen), he’d probably lose more votes from our coalition than he gains. I find that situation deplorable, but I think it’s true. I also think there’s a big enough generational split here that many progressives can’t even see that that might be the case. Or they don’t care.

@Matt McIrvin:
Yeah, no. What they are, is weak thinkers, using emotion instead of logic. If lots of people did as they suggest, then when Biden inevitably refuses to cut Israel off (b/c there are a ton of Dems and independents who would find that unacceptable[1]), Biden would lose the election (e.g. if all Arab-Americans in Michigan decided to boycott b/c of I/P) and boy howdy, TFG would go to town on Palestine, and on all Muslims everywhere, including Muslim-Americans.
What these smooth-brained idiots are banking on, is that *Biden will win*. And so, it’s perfectly acceptable to twist Biden’s arm: he’s gonna win anyway, amirite? amrite!?!?!1?
Only, we’ve seen this damn movie before, in 2016.
[1] just as you write in your last para. Just so.
They’re no different from the House Freedom Caucus: Massie and Roy and the other chucklefucks know that their preferred policies are unacceptable to most of the country, and even to much of the House G(r)OP caucus. So what do they do? They hold the G(r)OP Caucus hostage, hold the country hostage (by refusing to pass a budget, via the Hastert Rule) and demand that their particular policies be enacted. They’re willing to hold the entire country hostage, b/c they know (or at least believe) that the other side (the Dems) will cave. They’re *counting* on the other side caving, and they’re counting on their hostage-taking not resulting in the G(r)OP losing control of the House.
In just the same manner, these children are counting on Biden caving, and on him still winning.

@Matt McIrvin:
The way you get your way in a democracy, in a democratically-run party caucus, is to elect representatives who support your positions, and get them to take over (or gain power in) the caucus, and help your party gain power, period. That’s how it works. But they know that not enough of the country actually agrees with them: that’s why they have to hold the country hostage for their issues.

Well, because I have had a bad day and am exhausted and was too lazy to look for something to watch on TV, I ended up watching what was on the TV when I turned it on. That was The Traitors, which is apparently a Peacock show but the first episode aired on NBC.
It’s a reality show. I’m not interested in the reality show part, but Alan Cumming is hosting it and he’s a complete joy to watch. He’s having the time of his life, wearing flamboyant tartan clothing and chewing the scenery, as he melodramatically tells the contestants the next twist or turn. The whole thing takes place in and around a castle in the Scottish highlands, so it’s stunning to look at. But Alan Cumming is the real treat.

@Matt McIrvin: It’s fun to fantasize giving someone else a good “I told you so!” but in real life, it’s never satisfying. Maybe you have to be older to get that.
The only peace in the Middle East has been created by Democrats. Carter gave us the Israel-Egypt deal, Clinton tried his damnedest with the Oslo Accords.
Republicans gave us two wars in Iraq.
It’s just like the economy, Democrats have the better record. But you probably have to be old get that too.
Chetan Murthy
@Ohio Mom: I don’t think you even have to believe that Biden will create peace in the Mideast. All you have to believe, is that if TFG is installed, he will destroy our country and harm many, many Americans. That should be enough. Yes, foreigners will also be harmed. Yes, Palestinians will be harmed far more by TFG than by Biden. But those facts shouldn’t be necessary to conclude that you have to support Biden.
At least, that’s how I remember my oath of naturalization going. And the Pledge of Allegiance for that matter.

His original cabinet was basically a bunch of Captain Planet villains for the most part. That was already the bottom of the barrel in my opinion. I shudder to think what toxic sludge he would appoint in a hypothetical second term.
He was getting pretty scary in 2020. He had appointed people like Chad Wolf, the Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, who deployed DHS personnel to places like Portland during the BLM /George Floyd protests where they abducted protesters in unmarked vehicles and did not identify themselves as LEOs. And then of course 1/6 happened.

@Matt McIrvin: I just heard a bit of the CBC’s “As it Happens” interview with an apparently older white Republican woman in NH. Doesn’t like TIFG because he’s a cad. Didn’t like Hillary because she was so “corrupt!”. Doesn’t like Biden, doesn’t like Harris. “I hope there’s some way that both Biden and TIFG won’t be candidates.” Likes Haley, but doesn’t say why other than I guess she’s not a cad.
She was asked who she would vote for, and she hemmed and hawed a bit, and said if it’s really Biden and TIFG she’ll probably write in somebody else.
I didn’t hear any mention at all about policies. It’s all about her feelings for her.
I guess it’s good she’s not going to be voting for TIFG, but, man, it shows you how easy it is to get people to pay attention to “clouds and shadows” and feelings rather than think about real problems and the future of the country…
Cheers,
