Shit Magnet Attracts Some Shit

Well, apparently the shots fired near Trump’s golf course (not Mar-a-Lago) in Florida were related to a guy with an AK-47 in the bushes a couple of holes ahead of where Trump was golfing:

US Secret Service agents opened fire on a man armed with a gun who they believed was targeting Donald Trump as he played at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The agents were several holes ahead of Trump when they spotted a gun poking through the bushes, one of the people said. The man then fled in a vehicle that was later apprehended. An AK-style rifle was found at the scene.

Trump was nearby but was safe, according to the Trump campaign. “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Trump communications director Steven Cheung said.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office is expected to hold a press conference this afternoon. Palm Beach officials were briefed by local law enforcement that they believed Trump was the target, according to a person familiar with the matter.

This is from the Post’s coverage:

The Secret Service has long been concerned about Trump’s vulnerability on his golf courses, which remain open to parts of the public and are often near heavily trafficked areas.

Here’s the thing about narcissists:  the shortest distance between two points is never the path they take.  Their ego needs always, always come first.  So, even though the Secret Service advised against outdoor rallies, Trump had one in Butler, PA, and a nutter took a shot at him.  Now, in the middle of a campaign where he’s sowing nothing but hate, he decides that he’s going to golf on Sunday, and something the Secret Service warned about happened yet again.  (If anyone has a link to a site that tracks campaign appearances, I’d love to see it, because Trump isn’t doing much but golfing and showing up for anemic rallies on occasion.)

I’m not saying this is Trump’s direct fault — the point I’m making is that people like him are shit magnets because they aren’t serious about anything other than their own self-image.  Trump’s was seriously damaged this week in the debate, and Tay-tay’s Harris endorsement was nearly lethal.  So he needed a little time on his course with his emotional support team, which presumably included Laura Loomer and a cast of a few other third-rate sycophants who glom onto him like remoras.  Never mind that his personal comfort zone is a place where he might think twice about going after causing so much pain to so many people.  He had his needs, and those always come first.

A MOCKTAIL FOR MURDER post for Balloon Juice (September 2024)

Hello again, fellow Balloon Juicers!

First of all, a big THANK YOU to every one of you who has purchased one or more of my books – and my Sanibel calendars — over the last seven (!) years. My book sales and sanity took big hits from Covid and then Hurricane Ian. And it’s been the support of my readers—and communities like Balloon Juice, which I have been reading since 2007—that has kept me going.  So, thank you. Now onto business!

As I wrote in my last post, I’ve had a busy year, writing and publishing TWO books, the second of which just came out. It’s called A Mocktail for Murder. And as the title suggests, it’s a murder mystery.

The book features the amateur sleuth from my Sanibel books, reporter Guin Jones. However, I wrote it as a standalone/sequel to those books, which you don’t have to have read to enjoy. You just need to like a good mystery or books that take place in New York City, where this one takes place.

In this book, Guin’s new husband is accused of killing his ex-wife, the founder of a new mocktail business (think Real Housewife Bethenny Frankel), but he swears he didn’t do it. Unfortunately, the police and a lot of other people don’t believe him. So investigative reporter Guin, who is now a business reporter for the FTFNYT, takes it upon herself to find the real killer and put him or her on ice.

With a cast of questionable characters (and some cute cats and dogs) and several twists and turns, A Mocktail for Murder will have you guessing whodunit until the end! (Or I hope it will!)

You can find Mocktail and my 13 other books on Amazon* (in paperback and for the Kindle), B&N Online, BAM, Bookshop, and in select bookstores. And if your bookstore or library doesn’t carry my books, they can order them for you via Ingram Distribution.

For more info about my books and me, visit Shovel & Pail Press and follow the Sanibel Island Mysteries page on Facebook.

*I know a lot of people hate Amazon, but they pay me the biggest royalty. (Ingram, the company that prints and distributes books to bookstores, is run by a bunch of TN Republicans who pay indie authors like me a pittance. But they are the only way I can get my books into bookstores and libraries.)

Woke Up to a Dumpster Fire

I’m on Hawaii time, and it’s a Sunday so I had to spend a few hours in church, so I’m just catching up with the madness that is the Trump campaign.  Let’s begin with this:

Woke Up to a Dumpster Fire

Then, doubling down on the cat eating:

Woke Up to a Dumpster Fire 1

Then, because Florida, there were shots fired outside Mar-a-Lago, and the campaign immediately issued a press release about that.

JD also stunk up the place on CNN, admitting to Dana Bash that he’s making up stories about Springfield to get attention:

Woke Up to a Dumpster Fire 2

He was also an asshole to Bash, keeping that strong “red pilled incel” energy alive to energize the critical bitter young white guy who can’t get a date vote, a group that was never going to vote for Trump until JD joined the ticket.  Note that Mike DeWine put on his big boy pants and said that things are fine, actually, in Springfield, though he still supports Trump and Vance, because he’s term limited and hoping for some sweet wingnut welfare.

There’s even more than this, but I want to close on the NYT waking from their dogmatic slumber and doing a wee bit of research on what was promising to be the next Springfield, Aurora, CO.  They discovered what anyone who had been following Denver media for the last couple of weeks already knew:  there are no apartment buildings in Aurora being taken over by Venezuelan gangs.  There’s just a greedy slumlord with a history of beefs with the town making up stories about gangs to distract from the rats and roaches.

The Most Important 4-Minute Video You May Ever Watch

I’m sitting on my screened-in porch this morning while it’s still cool enough to enjoy it, and I just watched this short animated video about Project 2025.  It’s so good.  I hope you’ll take the time to watch it.  This is important, even if you hate twitter.  It’s that good.

My porch was built by just one person.  So amazing.  Anyway, one day I sent him home with some of my home-made popsicles.  He told me the next day that his 5-year-old son had run through the house with his popsicle,  yelling “so good! so good! so good!” over and over.  Possibly the best compliment I’ve ever had from a little one!

Okay, maybe tied with when I made tacos for our then 7-year old Cody and 3 of his friends, and his best friend Tony looked up at me and said “These are even better than my Mom’s!” which I took as high praise indeed.

Anyway, that’s how good this is.  Watch it and send it to everyone you know.

I’ve yet to see a simpler explanation for Project 2025. pic.twitter.com/IMy6oPAFDU

Good advice.  I often think about the ways that we inadvertantly help spread the awfulness from the other side, even as we are mocking it.  But not this time; I hadn’t thought about that.  So here you go!

Tim Walz: Here’s my life hack for all the guys out there: surround yourself with smart women and listen to them and you’ll do just fine. That includes my fellow cat owner Taylor Swift.

It’s really great to have all of these women help us beat the smallest man in the world..

Mr. Charles P. Pierce, at Esquire, on “Fun for Its Own Sake”:

Ever since she ascended to the presidential nominee of her party, Vice President Kamala Harris has been riding a wave of something I thought had been lost in this country since around half-past Tet ’68–fun without meanness; joy, uncontaminated by bile and spite, happiness, for its own sake. It certainly did not hurt that she chose Coach Santa Claus for a running mate. It also did not hurt that she was running against the personification of meanness, bile, spite, and misery for its own sake. Prior to Tuesday night’s debate, Rep. Eric Swalwell told Jimmy Kimmel that Harris was “serious, but she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s fearless and, also, she knows how to have a little fun. And I think the team that has the most fun is the team that wins.”

Swalwell turned out to be right. Harris not only buried the former president* with her preparation and her command of the facts, but also with reaction shots and, on at least a couple of occasions, outright laughter. She smiled while delivering the zingers. She was enjoying herself, and she was giving us permission to enjoy ourselves, too.

This is something on which I’ve been banging my little tin drum for decades now. Politics is a serious business, but a campaign does not have to be. In fact, a hyper-serious campaign is a losing campaign. Swalwell was correct in that. Our history is not all crises weathered and problems solved. It also is brass bands, and torchlight parades, and barrels of hard cider at rural polling stations…

It was American politics that gave the world free speech and guarantees against self-incrimination. It was American campaigns that gave the world the word “booze.” We all contribute in our own way…

A bunch of white-supremacist dickheads bought the local Wal-Marts in and around Charlottesville, Virginia out of Tiki torches and proceeded to march to the defense of a statue of the traitor, Robert E. Lee. “You will not replace us,” they chanted, their faces twisted and ugly, “Jews will not replace us.” The subsequent riot, of course, brought blood to the streets of Mr. Jefferson’s town, and brought the president* of the United States out to tell us about the good people on both sides. On this past Tuesday night, it seemed, that all the torches provided warm light again.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Pacific North West Flower Portraits

Glamour shots from Mike in Oly:

We are still working on our garden renovation so no pretty garden photos yet, but here’s some nice flower portraits from the past several weeks. We’ve had some unseasonable cool and rainy weather (nearly unheard of in August for the PNW) and the flowers are very much enjoying it.

  • Top photo: My lewisias were all done blooming when this yellow one decided it wanted to show off as well. I honestly had thought they died out as the yellows seem to be very picky.

Great potted plant if you know the trick to getting them to thrive – gravel around the crown. They hate touching dirt except at the deep root area. Gravel at the surface gives them the drainage they crave.
  • This white foxglove was heavily fasciated, and it was just amazing to watch it grow and bloom. Had not seen anything like it before.

The previous year it was heavily infested with some tiny white flies. I wonder if they caused it.
  • Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Pacific North West Flower Portraits 1

  • When we moved here there were rose campion around the mailbox. They continue to seed themselves about the area as nothing else will grow in dry soil and blasting sun under a fir tree. They are so bright and cheerful.
  • Sunday Morning Garden Chat: Pacific North West Flower Portraits 3

  • I love osteospermum! Sadly this one quit blooming not long after I took this shot. A few seedlings from last year’s planting are up and slowly blooming tho.
