For the record: Those people now wishcasting about how wonderful a presidential candidate Senator Warren would’ve been are making an error on the scale of predicting Michael Jordan would be as dominant a professional baseball player as he was on the basketball court. My senior Senator (may she be in office for many years to come) knows her skill set, and while that skill set would not seem to include running for national office, it very much involves publicly banging around white-collar financial criminals as a teaching lesson for all of us.
I think the nation’s political cartoonists were just overjoyed to have a topic that was not Donald Trump. How many ways can one graphically express the concept HE’LL STEAL EVERYTHING HE CAN PRY LOOSE BEFORE HE KILLS US ALL YOU OBLIVIOUS IDIOTS before succumbing to despair? But a robber baron named Stumpf fronting a company with a stagecoach-full-of-bullion logo, now…
Speaking of Mr. Stumpf: Does anyone know why he was wearing a massive bandage on his right hand/forearm? Were we supposed to believe the ungrateful underlings responsible for the ‘phantom accounts’ scheme had bitten the hand that fed them?

And, finally, yes this is VERY VERY wrong, but under the circumstances…

Big bandage is a pity play. Think about any time a public figure/criminal has been shown being wheeled into the courtroom, oxygen tank strapped on, or leaning feebly on his cane. Cosby is the most recent to my mind.
Stumpf should be in prison, bandages and all.

So, Gennifer Flowers has accepted Trumps invitation to the debate Monday.
Just serves to remind Cole’s warning that Republicans hate Clinton to such an irrational degree that they literally see her as inhuman. I can’t imagine this is going to play well for Trump in the evening’s analysis.

The official reason given (by a WF spokesperson, or his lawyer, or someone) is that he had hurt it “playing with his grandchildren.”

Wait, what? Gennifer Flowers is going to be at the debate? This is really fueling my feelings that Trump is going to tank at the debate. I’ll be shocked that at some point if Clinton gets him unsteady and seems like she’s winning he’s going to come undone.

Well I was just mugged. I was walking down a nice street in a good neighborhood in broad daylight when some kids jumped me. Considering how caught at a disadvantage I was, I probably did pretty well. One of them attempted to punch me in the face and basically did no damage whatsoever (I don’t even see a bruise or feel any tenderness). I struggled a lot, and maybe that’s why they ran away with only my wallet. I still have my phone and keys.
I honestly wouldn’t recognize any of them if I saw them again, so there wasn’t much the police could do (although apparently these incidents have been happening around with some frequency). I’m not scared or experiencing any trauma right now. Mostly I’m just annoyed that I’m going to have to replace all my cards and my wallet.
gogol's wife
@Xantar:
I’m sorry. It’s very jarring, even when you don’t get hurt. But maybe you should see a doctor.
? Martin
@dedc79: I don’t read it that way.
First point is that, per Clinton’s own assertion, Trump can be baited with a tweet and therefore we should have expected him to do something like this. Clinton should have as well. I think that’s perfectly fair.
Second point is that if you think what Trump did is gross, what the hell did you expect? This is what he does. This is who he is.
IOW, this should have been entirely predictable to everyone including Clinton from something Clinton initiated. Now, how you interpret all of this probably depends a great deal on whether you think this is a good result for Trump or Clinton. I suspect those who see this as ‘gross’ are very concerned people. I am not concerned. This looks like a straight up win by Clinton. Trump played straight into her hands. She trolled him and he responded in exactly the manner you would predict from a misogynist. The question now is how this gets spun on Monday. Clinton now has an extra tool in her belt. If she wants to draw out Trumps misogyny, she can call out Flowers being there. What’s Trump going to say about Cuban – that he’s a billionaire that doesn’t like him? He just looks childish. Cuban being there isn’t hurtful to Trump. Annoying, yes, but nobody would see that as hurtful. Most women and a lot of men in this country would only interpret Flowers being there as hurtful.
I think Isaac is sending a message to the very concerned people – “Look, Clinton initiated this and may have expected a result like this. This may not be a cause of concern.”

When Benazir Bhutto was PM of Pakistan her husband Asif Zardari was called Mr Seven Percent because he expected a bribe of 7 percent on any money related to the government – foreign aid coming in, contracts with the government etc. This is what I would expect from the whole Trump family. @efgoldman: I wouldn’t be so sure. The candidates feel known only because the public knows them as caricatures rather than real people. For most voters, this will be the first time they really experience them in the context of being President. Those caricatures could hold up, or they could fall apart. I think they’re more likely to fall apart on both sides – Trump less likely to be seen as a successful person on top of things, and Clinton less likely to be seen as a craven liar. But you never know. It’s a weird election.

The poutrage from our politicians over the financial gains made by the CEO of Wells Fargo is understandable, but predictable.
A more credible gesture would be for any outraged politicians who received “dirty money” from Wells Fargo in 2016 to return it. The list is long:
– 93 House Democrats
– 125 House Republicans
– 28 Democrat Senators
– 34 Republican Senators
– 7 presidential candidates.

@Peale: If I were her, I wouldn’t have a specific goal of bringing her up. She’s there as a prop Clinton can choose to use if the situation is right for it. If Trump opens the misogyny door, then I think you go boldly through it and bring Flowers up as an illustration. If Trump avoids that, then you just ignore her being there and let the media carry that if they choose. But Clinton should only bring Flowers up to force Trump to explain why she was invited. There’s no way he can answer that without looking like a fucking asshole.

You’re right for most people the debates won’t change anything. For those “undecided” voters out there, I call bullshit, there is no way they’re undecided, they just want to play coy. The young people playing footsie with Stein and Johnson are already deserting them, and by the end will either vote for Hillary or stay home. To get the rest of them away from Johnson, all the Hillary people need to do is have Obama, Bernie and Michelle tell them he doesn’t believe there is anything to be done about Global Warming, and that will be the end of that, pot legalization not withstanding.
As for the number of debates, Trump has no way to withdraw without looking like he’s afraid of a ‘girl’, during the primaries, there was a lot of shit going on and most people were not paying attention. If he withdraws this close to the election the media will savage him for taking away a very lucrative chew toy from him, and he will not be able to give an interview or a press conference where he isn’t asked why he’s afraid to debate Hillary. Even he will not be able to withstand that. Look how quickly he caved over the resurrected birther bullshit. There will be 3 debates.

@efgoldman: There’s a polling phenomena where you have to gauge how ‘real’ the thing you are polling is to the participant. The election isn’t very real yet. It’s still a hypothetical to most people. The idea of going to war sounds a lot better when you aren’t sitting in a foxhole. The concept of saving people in need sounds a lot easier when you’re not standing in front of a burning building.
So yes, people tend to discover closer to an election where their real convictions actually lie.

From what I’ve read about the Wells Fargo case, I think Stumpf is a very bold blooded calculating thug, and if he didn’t mastermind the crime himself, he is covering for those who did. Warren was too easy on him during the hearings. No way this was X thousand bad apples that happened to walk in the door and just happen to work for Wells Fargo. @Calming Influence: You can’t say “casino” here (as you did in #51) or FYWP will bit-bucket your post. Unless you do some trickery (like placing HTML tags with nothing between them in the word, like I did there).
I have stuff eaten by FYWP quite frequently too. There’s a hidden list of bad words, but seemingly nobody human knows what they all are…
HTH.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Another Scott: @Another Scott: Like the right wing strategy of the past 30 years of slowly infiltrating local city councils and minor public offices, so Word Press is slowly restricting our vocabulary until we are trying to communicate with grunts.

I’d always that the League was pushed out, but the story turns out to be complex. Here are a couple of links from them:
http://lwv.org/press-releases/league-refuses-help-perpetrate-fraud
http://lwv.org/content/league-women-voters-and-candidate-debates-changing-relationship
Apparently, media organizations and the two major parties have figured out how to set up a thing that benefits those stakeholders, without particular consideration for the voters (who are arguably marks to one set of participants and consumers to the other).
(Now let’s see if I can post here)

@? Martin:
I’ll say it this way – She’s a CA blue dog, which is far to the left of say, a Nebraska blue dog. I still don’t think she’s the kind of politician we need now, her optics and political sense are totally me, me, me…….. We have over 40 million people in this state, surly we could find someone closer to being an actual democrat to run. As I said she votes very well as a dem but her actual working in the house is lousy. And the optics of campaigning with Issa? You and I would make far better senators than her and we are both rather unelectable I’d think, me probably far more so than you but still.

@Mnemosyne:
Doesn’t the GEC match contributions, or is that only to specific charities?

@? Martin:
A lot of people don’t agree with their employers about all political issues, and they’re required to disclose their employment by law, so it’s an infinite source of this kind of insinuation.

Keep trying! Someone needs to be the Balloon-Juice Bodhisattva to show us the way past the cycle of FYWP!

Oh I agree that the jungle primary is wrong and this may all be due to it but I still think it poisons the waters for her to do it. It is a real dick move on her part and yes it should be and is disqualifying.

@Ruckus: I think matching political contributions from corporations is prohibited. I could be wrong though (I know that the DCCC and DSCC talk about matching individual contributions, but I think those come from other individuals, not corporations or unions, etc.).
Cheers,

@efgoldman: Yeahbut, I thought Adam tried to clean most of those out a few weeks ago? But there are still weird words like “Watson” and things having to do with footwear, and certain types of games, and the vast mysterious list that I seem to draw from when my posts go to the FYWP Dungenon using words that aren’t in those previous categories.
(sigh)
Cheers,

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I’ve been away from the Internet calling my bank and everyone else to replace everything. If any of you are still reading this, I’m ok. Those kids weren’t interested in damaging me. They just wanted to hold me down and get my wallet. I think the one kid threw a punch simply because I wouldn’t lie still. Not that it did any good. He had HORRIBLE technique and no strength behind it.
I kept it up long enough that bystanders noticed and intervened, causing the kids to run away. Too bad about the wallet, but what I’m telling myself is that this is what all those years of martial arts and strength training prepared me for. I mitigated the damage as well as anyone could reasonably expect, and I have to keep that in mind.
I called 911 immediately, and the bystanders gave the best witness statements they could. The cop told me there had been other reports of such things in the area. So yeah there’s a report. If they keep trying this, it’s inevitable that they will get unlucky at some point. I just hope they don’t hurt anyone.

@efgoldman: Bah. I had a Genius, Genius I tell you! reply all ready to go, and FYWP ate it at least 6 times. It’ll probably show up around 3 AM. Keep an eye out…

@Xantar: Hey, you know this, ’cause you’re smart, but as the emotional impact of your day sets in, just bear in mind that you’re not in any way at fault for your misfortune. I’m projecting, but I assume that as a Juicer, you’re an insightful, possibly introspective sort. I find myself obsessing about how I could have avoided a given situation or outcome, all sorts of “what if” thinking. It’s natural, I think, but don’t get hung up about it. The kids that attacked you are to blame, and you have the right to walk down a street un-effed-with. I’m glad that you are (relatively) unscathed, and wish you happiness and restful sleep. Be well.
And, your last post came in while I was typing. Glad you’re OK.

`@? Martin:
Oh FFS, the employees of Wells Fargo give to the “Wells Fargo and Company Employee PAC”, which then makes political donations.
If you really think that Wells Fargo, the corporation, is nothing to do with the Wells Fargo and Company Employee PAC you might ask yourself why Wells Fargo would even bother to set up a structure that allowed employees to make political donations. Do you think it is out of corporate kindness, or do you think that maybe they did it to legally work around campaign finance laws?
And feel free to let the Center for Responsive Politics and OpenSecrets.org know that you think they are full of shit, and you know better. Jackass.

@Xantar: Please take good care of yourself, and try to have a slow-paced, low-pressure schedule for the next couple of days. Absolutely agree with others who have noted that sometimes the shock doesn’t hit until a day or two after the fact.
Rest, glass of wine, and curling up on a comfortable sofa with calm pet or kind human might be a good way to combat such a crappy start to the evening.

@Xantar: Late to the thread. Sorry it happened to you. I agree with what Martin said. When I was mugged, I thought I was doing OK until a couple of days later when I went to the grocery store and saw a couple of kids who were the same height and build as the guy who mugged me. I went to a different part of the store until I was sure they were gone, which is probably stupid, but I was surprised at how scared and shaky I suddenly felt.
Stella B.
@Ruckus: She’s always been a dim bulb. She was the one who actually disappeared for a couple of days right before the ACA vote because she was so scared to vote for it. I have no idea why she decided to run for the senate, because she’s going to lose. Her only good point was that I tremendously enjoyed voting for her and against “B-1 Bob” Dornan.
Her sister, Linda, is also in Congress, representing a district in Los Angeles. She’s super smart and I would have happily seen her run for the senate. The two are, clearly, the only sister team in congress ever.

I kind of hope Trump does mention Flowers in the debate. I kind of hope Trump mentions her in the debate and Clinton asks…”Oh, do you know her? Does your wife know you know her?”

@Xantar:
So what city are we talking about as if Trump’s words about crime were true in all cities?
In lots of places mugging people can get you shot by a muggee with a piece.
ETA: Obviously, very glad no one was injured to amount to much. Take care and rest tomorrow.
