Apparently everyone’s a wee bit stressed out, which is understandable. So rather than explaining the vetting process* on how a series of white supremacists, plagiarists, conspiracists, economic illiterates, white collar criminals, and some, I assume, are good people, I thought something relaxing might be in order. Everyone say awwww!!!!
Open thread.
* I have a bit of inside insight here, which I won’t go into, but basically the vetting is done based on expressed and perceived loyalty to the President. Republicans, former Republicans, and self described conservatives who were NeverTrumpers or who ever wrote or said anything negative about the President on social media or on TV or on talk radio are excluded unless they take great pains to get right with the President. The same loyalty test applies to professionally non-partisan subject matter experts who did similar things out of their professional concern over what was observable during the campaign and has been happening ever since.

@Major Major Major Major: Part of the problem is that despite having actual theater strategic success from the by, with, and through strategy that the current administration inherited from the Obama administration and has continued, with a couple of tweaks, the President has been quietly withdrawing US personnel from the operating environment. The first withdrawals were of non-lethal diplomatic and humanitarian resources; both personnel and funding. Then the Special Forces teams were pulled out of areas that were in contact with Russian and Iranian backed Syrian forces. Then 10th Mountain Division got sent home after only being in theater for about a month, so there’s no Combined Joint Force Land Component Command anymore. Those responsibilities have been reassigned back to the Corps headquarters that is running Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve.
My big worry is that just as we now know the President unilaterally offered Kim to end the Korean war when they met one on one, he made a deal with Putin to pull the US out of Syria when they met one on one. The Israelis have leaked that this is what they asked him to negotiate: that in exchange for pulling out of Syria, Russia would at least keep Iran and Hezbullah away from the Golan Heights if not push them out completely. Here’s the problem: the DOD estimated that there were 30,000 ISIS fighters in 2014 when they transformed themselves into something really dangerous from just being a nuisance. The DOD just released its most recent estimate of ISIS’s strength. Amazingly it is still estimating ISIS has 30,000 fighters between Iraq and Syria. So we haven’t won anything. All we’ve done working by, with, and through our local allies (the Iraqi military and militias and various Syrian rebel groups) is free ISIS up of the need to both defend a set geographic area (the caliphate) and administrate and provide government services within that area. ISIS is actually deadlier without the caliphate. And that’s not even counting the ISIS bubbas that have made their way to Afghanistan and are now operating there.

Never have had a Reuben (or a Rachel). The very thought of the combination triggers the gag reflex.
FYI, Carnegie deli used to have a tongue, corned beef and swiss sandwich with slaw and Russian dressing. Anything other than tangy mustard on tongue is incorrect cuisinating.
Adam L Silverman
@Major Major Major Major: It is bad. It is going to get worse. It is going to be a slaughter. We could prevent it. We are positioned to do so. The strategy in place counts on us doing so. But because the President thinks this is all, somehow, too expensive and we’ve already knocked the hell out of ISIS, the Combined Joint Task Force Commander, his subordinate commanders, the Special Envoy, and a lot of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are going to be forced to watch it and do nothing!
What is even worse, the way that the build up for this is happening, with the Russian naval build up in the Med, the information operation and PSYOP campaign teasing what’s coming, it is all intended to create a wave of new refugees. Refugees that Putin will have helped to create and will then weaponize against the EU and NATO just as his neo-NAZI proxies are doing right now in Chemnitz, Germany.

@SiubhanDuinne: Mattis was able to get through an ‘explanation’ of the rescehdule/no reschdule cancelled/not cancelled, provocative/not provocative Korean military exercises without cracking up or throwing up, or running from the lectern screaming..

Leaks about his statements on conducting joint multinational exercises with the ROK and Japan designed to piss off the President. If Mattis goes, especially if it is because of whomever it is that wants him out of the way manages to set the conditions for it to happen, things will be much worse than they are now. Imagine what happens at the DOD with Tom Cotton as Secretary of Defense.

Also, they gave me a slow-release (every 12 hours) opiate and also Celebrex so I can switch to that if I have issues with the opioid. I’m having my first “food” since last night at midnight — a can of ginger ale.

Canada used to be very “white bread”, but starting in the late ’70’s, immigration has become the key to population growth, and we take all qualified comers.
A long history of abhorrent regional food, ( except Quebec) based on British Boiling, made immigrant food and their cooks, highly welcome.
Jerked chicken and goat curry will keep you warmer a lot longer than boiled beef and mushy peas, in winter.
A bunch of economic factors also make Whitehorse an income abnormality.
There was a high end, high quality Bed/Bath/Home store in YVR the ex used to love, $700 eiderdown quilts, $120 800 threadcount sheets, $1200 shabby chic end chairs. They had two stores, one in YVR’s Yaletown, the other in Whitehorse.

@GxB: Heh. More about PMJ & Haley Reinhart. She’s great with Casey Abrams on Baby It’s Cold Outside. And yeah, her voice …. I don’t have any useful metaphors for it, but yeah, smoky is a nice one. And she’s got some …. diaphragm doesn’t she? Some of those songs, she’s gotta have some serious air capacity there.

@Chetan Murthy: I gotta admit, I listen to Haley Reinhart like i listen to Pink Martini. I wonder if there are other bands/singers that I oughta listen to, with that same level of “holy moley wow!”

@Just One More Canuck:
You’re all beyond hope. There’s no fucking reasoning with people who think lacrosse is an indoor sport.
Jay
@burnspbesq:
You can’t play lacrosse outdoors 6 months of the year here, not with out a really really bad case of brain freeze, lung freeze, and the game slowed down by wading through the snowdrifts looking for a white ball in a sea of white.
We like our lacrosse.

This is extremely worrisome.

@burnspbesq: You are correct, that is worrying.

@Jay:
You could use a different colored ball in the winter.
Jay
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
8′ snow drifts on top of 3′ snow packs don’t care what colour the ball is.

@Adam L Silverman: I always think of the Rachel as a sandwich that hasn’t found it’s definition yet. (Depending on the deli, I’ve had Rachel’s that were regular Corned beef or Pastrami & coleslaw too).
Dang, now I want deli for lunch.

I just watched the video (about 10am PDT) and all I could think was “Leave the damn cat alone!!!”
