There was a lot of interest in Lucky in the comments yesterday, but I’ll need you to email me so I can put you in contact with Sheryl, as she’ll make the decision. So please email me at Adam-Silverman (at) balloon-juice (dot) com and I’ll pass your info onto Sheryl and you can chat. We’ll still help arrange transport as needed.
New pic!
Also Sheryl added this: One thing I forgot to say about lucky is, she does not scratch the furniture. She knows how to use a scratching post. Whoever had her before trained her very well.
Original post below the fold.
Touch the cat, bot a glove… I dare you!
About a month or so ago, the morning after the last hard freeze here, my barber stopped by her shop and found the pretty lady above. She had her checked for a microchip and there wasn’t one. Nor was there a collar. She then had the cat checked out by the same vet that checked for the chip. The cat, by then named Lucky, was given a clean bill of health and they redid all her shots/vaccinations just to be safe. She’s litter box trained, doesn’t shed, and does not seem to trigger people’s cat allergies. Unfortunately, she can’t have pets and we need to find this lovely and so far lucky little lady a new home. Here are the details from Sheryl:
Sorry to bother you so early. Have a bit of a problem. Our landlord is completely against us having a cat. There is no negotiating with him so I am reaching out to you to see if you can help with this situation. I’d like to find her a good home.
Thanks,
Sheryl
That came through at 6:15 AM. Fortunately I was up at 5 AM.
Here’s the rest of the necessary information:
She is between 8-10 yrs. Her last weigh in was 7.6 pounds. She is fully vaccinated. Is negative for parasites. She is on a flea and heart worm preventative regiment. She is an inside cat. She has all of her claws. She does not shed and is very talkative. Very friendly, loves to sit on your lap, likes to chase the laser light and is litter box trained. I am not sure how she is around other animals as she was found approximately a month ago.
I think she has quite a bit of Siamese in her because of the lack of shedding and her talking. She also likes to lick you.
So here’s where you all come in. One of you is either looking for a new cat or know someone who is. And Lucky just happens to need a new forever home. Lucky is in north Pinellas County, Florida (about 7 miles west of Tampa and five miles north of Clearwater). If you’re interested or no someone who is, please shoot me an email using the email a front pager tool at the top right of the page. And, of course, feel free to sign off in the comments. If you’re interested or knows someone who is or might be and are outside the immediate area and a few hours drive, we can work out transport to get Lucky to her new forever home.
Here’s some more pictures:
Let’s not let Lucky down!!!!!
I’ll be back this evening with a brief War for Ukraine Update.
Open thread!
Zzyzx
If you said King County I might have been tempted because she reminds me of my old First Cous.
eclare
Sweet looking kitty! I live far away and already have two cats, I hope her name rings true for her.
Chi-J
I hope the Ukraine update doesn’t have new bad news about Bakhmut….
Alison Rose
I really don’t understand refusing to allow cats. They’re not loud like dogs, they’re super easy to housetrain and typically only go outside the box if they’re ill or something, and any damage they might do by scratching tends to be to furniture, which belongs to the tenant. Just seems like a dick move by landlords.
Hope they’re able to find a good home for this baby.
MazeDancer
@Zzyzx: No place is too far for BJ.
Planes fly in and out of FL every day. No doubt someone can be found to take Lucky to a new home.
Timill
We don’t need another cat, particularly as we just got a rescue with FIP from middle Georgia, but I’ll watch in case we can help with transport or something.
Based near Knoxville TN, FWIW.
CaseyL
Lucky looks like a tortie. Torties are wonderful. Playful, affectionate, and they take no crap from anyone.
I’m too far away to even think about driving, but am always ready to kick on towards expenses.
Ha Nguyen
She’s gorgeous and if I didn’t already have 3 cats, I would be tempted. But, as one of my cats is already unhappy with sharing, I don’t dare get another cat.
However, if anyone needs help with travel costs, I would be willing to buy an airplane ticket to Lucky’s new TBD home.
Gin & Tonic
I don’t suppose anyone can drive to Kuala Lumpur?
prostratedragon
@Alison Rose: “They’re not loud like dogs,”
Unless they’re Siamese, the opera singers of catdom. At 3am. I find it vaguely amusing, but then I’ve been accused of being part cat myself. Offspring of Siamese cross can be tortoise.
Sparkedcat
@Timill: Same here. Based near Cookeville TN. Currently have two new rescue cats. Will assist in any way possible.
Leslie
I’m way out in California, but happy to chip in if Lucky needs to travel. Beautiful kitty.
eclare
@Sparkedcat: Wow, lot of Volunteers here! I am in the Fightin’ Ninth, Memphis.
Zzyzx
@MazeDancer: I only bring home cats that I first meet and bond with but I think Lucky will live up to her name!
Anonymous At Work
Pinning this for later. Would have to decide on getting a pet (again) at all, but I am in Fort Lauderdale area. Bball game calls shortly.

@Gin & Tonic:
Um, thanks, but that won’t be necessary. I intend to adopt from a shelter in the Klang Valley.
Madeleine
She looks beautiful and I was once owned by a tortie, not the kindest or friendliest beast, but we liked each other. Sigh.
i can’t take her, but my sister lives near your location and has a large social circle, so I’ll see if she knows someone who needs a cat.
Sparkedcat
@eclare: The climate on the Cumberland Plateau is perfect. The politics are abysmal. In 2008 the first three Obama signs I posted on my property were stolen. The fourth Obama sign was placed 30 feet up in a tree. It stayed there until wind and weather wore it away. As an aside my father called Cameron Sexton a liar to his face. Thanks for staying strong in Memphis.
Kristine
Will kick in for travel expenses if necessary.
raven
@Alison Rose: We’re landlords and will not take cats.

@Alison Rose:
Allergies. Cat allergies tend to be a lot worse and more common than dog allergies. Getting rid of all the cat hair and dander to the point the place is suitable for someone with allergies is a major chore. Also, some male cats spray to mark their territory, and plenty of cats scratch at stuff beyond the furniture.
A Ghost to Most
I’m sadly just down a cat. Where is she?
eclare
@Sparkedcat: The last time I drove through there on I-40, which was a long time ago, it looked like there were a lot of new retirement communities. Yes, the climate there is wonderful, as for politics, way to go Dad!

@A Ghost to Most: Florida somewhere.
I live in CA, which is sad and excellent because I love this kitty already and would fail to convince my partner to allow another feline occupant into our home.
Odie Hugh Manatee
Good luck, I hope Lucky is lucky in finding a forever home! I’m on the other side of the country and I’ve already got three boys who own the house. I also have a vagabond furry young lady living out in my shop that I’m trying to find a home for.
satby
@Madeleine: and everyone else, do spread the word about this sweet girl. Though only middle aged by cat standards, she would be considered old and at risk of she ends up at animal control, or even some humane societies. Older cats are often a dream to adopt, easygoing, happy and grateful to have a good home.
I’m up to seven cats. Little Murderpaws, now named Chloe, has found her forever home and is greatly adored already. I still have Bitchleen (aka Lenie); and as soon as the baby was gone another female in heat turned up at the outdoor feeding station, so I brought her in. Getting her spayed next week we hope. And three other cats are regularly visiting for food. One is a true feral, but the other two may just be semi-neglected “outdoor” cats. We’ll know if we can get any in traps but none appear to be fixed.
satby
@A Ghost to Most: we can get her to you!
pieceofpeace
I’m seriously thinking of becoming her human companion, and will put it in first place on my why not? list….
I’ve had cats, none now, and I fell in love at first, and only, sight.
Is there ANY downside or problem?
I live in SF Bay area.
A Ghost to Most
@satby:
That would work. I don’t do Florida. Get her to Tamara, and I can do the rest, if my wife is onboard, which is likely.
Tunch connection: we adopted Maple in the wake of his passing.
Tinare
She’s lovely. Willing to pitch in on transport expenses, or if a leg thru the mid Atlantic region is needed, would be willing to drive. I have two cats and two dogs, so pretty much at capacity here. But she looks like a sweetheart.
TaMara
@A Ghost to Most: Where are you located, let’s see if Adam can coordinate something to me…
A Ghost to Most
@TaMara:
We live right near the NE corner of North Table Mountain, outside Golden.
Our cats are indoor/outdoors, in a yard with a 6 foot fence. They come in at night, because of the mountain lions. I don’t know if that is a deal breaker.
WendyBinFL
Just learned that this is International Cat Rescue Day! I forwarded this bleg to my daughter in Manatee County, who is mom to one sweet cat, but she is not in a position to adopt another.
Adam L Silverman
@A Ghost to Most: This is doable. As is Anonimous at Work in FL. And even pieceofpeace in SF.
All lines are open. All operators are standing by.
Adam L Silverman
Ukraine update is up. Too.
raven
@Adam L Silverman: I’ll chip in.
pieceofpeace
If it works out, I’ll take her.
satby
@A Ghost to Most: if she has been exclusively indoor, she doesn’t likely have the understanding of a predator like a mountain lion. You’re best to plan on keeping her indoors for at least a few months, until she understands it’s now her home.
A Ghost to Most
@Adam L Silverman: Thanks. I just lost my best friend, and was already plotting a trip to the local shelter.
A Ghost to Most
@satby: The mountain lions only come near our yard at night. After the first adventure, the cats come in at night. Non-negotiable. But some people don’t want their cat outside, and it would be a deal breaker.
Rugosa
Aww . . . . my heart goes out to this girl. But I have a 16 yr old boy and can’t guarantee how he might deal with an inter loper.
grandmaBear
I just got to this post and it looks like I’m too late again. I’d love to take her. I’m in Ohio.
kalakal
I’m very near, sadly can’t take another cat myself, have already got a lot of conflict between 2 of ours. Will check out among friends and co-workers.
A Ghost to Most
@grandmaBear: I need a replacement cat, but I can find another cat easily. You go first.
If not, cool.
pieceofpeace
Is she still available?
A Ghost to Most
@pieceofpeace:
GrandmaBear expressed interest, so you may want to talk to everyone.
I’m going to be there if no one takes her.
Timill
If we relay to Ohio, we can do Atlanta to Cincinnati, I expect.
Adam L Silverman
Right now I’m waiting to hear back from Anonimous who is in Florida. All the potential options are doable. No one he’d been ruled in or out. If you’re interested snd haven’t emailed me, please do so.
Manyakitty
@Adam L Silverman: in for travel funds
Madeleine
i Just emailed my sister, though I see that Lucky is probably already claimed. I’ll leave the question open with her until Lucky’s home is settled with someone here.

@A Ghost to Most:
If you want her…we will get her to you.
Oh please🙏🏾
rikyrah
@grandmaBear:
Grandma, we will get her to Ohio
pieceofpeace
Adam,
I’m not sure what you mean about communicating with you regarding Lucky by emaling you. I’ve commented on wanting her a couple of times, always here at BJ. Should I be reaching out to you in some other way, a different email? Please let me know. Thank you.
satby
@A Ghost to Most: As a rescuer and transporter, and this advice isn’t only directed to you, animals who are transported far from their familiar surroundings need close monitoring and, for cats, often to be kept inside until they’re completely adjusted (dogs need to be leashed for the same reasons). Cats can scale a 6 foot fence (hell, I’ve seen freaked out dogs do it) and make a break for the last place they called home. And though all those movies like Lassie Come Home were heartwarming, the reality is most of the escapees end up dead on a road somewhere. Or injured, to die a slow death.
I know I’m often considered a buzz kill about this, but it happens even if a stranger is in “their” home, they’ll go looking for familiar faces. As John’s first day of dogsitting showed.
satby
@pieceofpeace: yes, he means email him with your real id and details of exactly where you are so that a transport can be arranged if they don’t finalize another home.

@satby: Thank you, appreciate knowing this. I’ll figure it out.

Sorry was at a local game where the refs were obvious fans of Ray Charles. Almost got to see 9 year olds lead an on-court riot against refs.
If others want her and are in the area, take them first. I’m a last-resort as I’d have to buy cat stuff after work tomorrow and drive up Saturday.
sab
@Alison Rose: My youngest cat wasn’t heutered 7ntil we got him at age five.
He settled down to be a sweetheart, but he still sprays all over the place, which is very damaging to the wood floors, the carpeting, and the general smell of the place.
I own my house so I am willing to put up with it, but I can understand the landlord’s position.1
A Ghost to Most
If someone closer can take her, I am happy as a clam.
If not, she has a home. Go, team.
sab
@satby: Every year we get a couple of signs around the neighborhood posted by new neighbors who let their cat out right after the move. The cats rarely turn up again since we have a 1000 acre Metropark next to us, chock full of coyotes
ETA It sounds like this little girl is already an indoor cat.
MazeDancer
She looks like Jean of Jorts & Jean fame.
Also, sounds like a lovely cat. Of course, happy to contribute to transport fund if needed.

@Alison Rose: We bought a house in 2005. We knew the family room carpet had been peed on by a cat, but it was old so we replaced that when we moved in. We had the living room carpet cleaned, and an area along the wall would not dry. The carpet cleaner said that was also caused by cat pee. The floor underneath was also damaged. So if I were a landlord I wouldn’t allow cats unless there was a serious security deposit or monthly surcharge.
TerryC
@satby: My grandma taught me to butter the paws of a new cat and sit it on the porch. The cat will then lick its paws clean and simultaneously become aware of its surroundings as comfortable.
