Air raid alerts are up for northeastern, north central, and most of eastern Ukraine because of drone swarms at 8:00 PM EST/3:00 AM local time in Ukraine. If the pattern of the past week or so holds, the drones will be followed by ballistic missiles, glide bombs, and/or air bombs.

Here’s the updated butcher’s bill from Poltava:

Air Defense Systems and a Sufficient Number of Interceptor Missiles Are Essential for Bringing Peace Closer – Address by the President

2 February 2025 – 20:43

Dear Ukrainians!

Just today, the rescue operations in Poltava were completed after a Russian missile strike. Unfortunately, this missile killed fourteen people, including two children – a nine-year-old and a twelve-year-old. My condolences to the families and loved ones. Twenty people were injured, including four children, ranging from a three-month-old baby to a twelve-year-old. Another twenty-two people were rescued. An entire section of the residential building – from the first to the fifth floor – was completely destroyed. And this was just one Russian missile, bringing so much pain, suffering, and loss. That is why Ukraine – and real peace – require guarantees. Guarantees that such evil will be stopped. Reliably. Not just with words or a few documents, but with something that can truly ensure the absence of Russian terror. Air defense systems and a sufficient number of interceptor missiles are essential for bringing peace closer. I am grateful to all our partners who are helping us with this and who fully understand what exactly we need. Patriots, IRIS-T, all types of necessary air defense systems, the development of drones and investments in weapons production here in Ukraine – all this is what protects the lives of our people and the very idea that peace is possible. This week, we have received new aid packages. A significant package from Sweden – $1.2 billion. Thank you, Sweden! A new security package from Finland. A package from Croatia as well. Thank you. We are working to ensure that next week also brings the crucial decisions Ukraine needs – decisions to support our state, our people, and our army.

Today, I want to recognize the rescuers who have proved themselves in these difficult days and weeks. The Poltava region, first of all. The workers of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the region – Oleksandr Sliusar, Serhiy Chebyshev, Yuriy Kupriakov, Oleksandr Bondar, and Serhiy Morhun. Thank you, guys! From the Cherkasy region, rescuers who assisted in Poltava — Volodymyr Babak, Serhiy Serhiyenko, Oleksandr Kolomiyets, and Andriy Kutsevol. Thank you, guys! The Sumy region – Artem Nechytailo, Ihor Kruhovoy, Dmytro Hrytsyna, Maksym Lavrinenko, and Roman Chihrin. Thank you and all your colleagues! The Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Odesa region – Oleh Riabushenko, Stanislav Romanets, Vadym Malyi, Illia Kamenda, Oleksandr Dolhyi, and the entire team in Odesa and the region. Thank you very much!

Glory to everyone who fights, works, and rescues all of us for the sake of Ukraine.

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy sat for an interview with the Associated Press yesterday. Here’s the video:

Your daily Patron!

Patron expressed some thoughts on Musk and Trump going after USAID:

Screen shot of the first part of a Patron tweet, accessed via Nitter. The text reads: While Elon Musk, using his position in this world, criticizes the work of @USAID, I want to thank everyone who has supported my efforts in educating children about the dangers of landmines. My cartoons, comics, and books were all made possible with the support of USAID. And why? One little girl was walking with her father to the dumpster. He noticed a box nearby and was about to touch it. She warned him not to because it could contain explosives. Where did she learn that? I told her about my cartoons. By the way, dozens of children in Ukraine have been injured by such “surprises.” Together with USAID, we have saved hundreds, maybe even thousands of children. Yes, it was “just a cartoon.”

The second part of a Patron tweet. At the bottom is a picture of Patron the sapper dog - Patron is a Jack Russel terrier, he is standing on an emergency vehicle facing the camera and wearing a navy blue safety vest/harness. The text above him is: But here, I want to express my gratitude to all American citizens who pay taxes. You have saved many children because of this. ❤️ I don’t know if I can continue creating, but my heart is filled only with gratitude to the people who made this possible. Thank you, @USAIDUkraine

I have worked  with USAID officers in various assignments for twenty years. I supervised one when I was at USAWC. He was a retired Coast Guard commander. Many of the USAID officers are retired military or veterans. Just as is the case with about 30% of all Federal civil servants. They do incredible work with limited resources under often less than optimal conditions. The ones deployed forward don’t work out of embassies or consulates, they work out in the field. They ones assigned to military headquarters forward work off the bases. And often they’ll go outside the wire when no one else will because they have to coordinate with the NGOs, both local and international, to provide necessary and often live saving services to the host country population. There’s not enough money going through USAID or to pay USAID personnel – civil servants or contractors – to make a dent in Federal spending. All that Musk and Trump are doing is going to harm a lot of people in dire straits and in desperate need of help. Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, Sudanese, Lebanese in south Lebanon, Syrians, Yemenis, Haitians, Ukrainians, and people in hundreds of other countries are all going to suffer because of this malignant jackassery. And the cherry on this sundae of ignorance and buffoonery is that what Musk, his 19-24 year old minions, his handful of actually experience adult aides, and his most important minion Trump are doing is damaging and destroying the US’s soft power. If you either didn’t vote or voted for Trump because you were angry about how Biden and his team handled Gaza, well done, you’ve played yourselves and condemned more Palestinians to die because you were too dumb to realize that when you looked around the table and couldn’t tell who the mark was, that you were the mark. As the saying goes: “…never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”

It’s Always February 2nd, and There’s Nothing I Can Do About It

by Rose Judson|  February 2, 20254:20 pm| 142 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Open Threads, Politics

Had to venture onto Facebook today, and apparently I’d posted this cartoon from the New Yorker five years ago today:

It's Always February 2nd, and There's Nothing I Can Do About It

Five years ahead of its time, if you ask me.

Like many of you, I am pretty floored by the speed and severity of this week’s events, and by how relatively muted the reaction outside of a few online communities seems to be. I’ve started writing a handful of posts and abandoned them all – a roundup of coverage of the fifth anniversary of Official Brexit Day, which was Friday, seemed less important than letting people talk about Elon Musk gaining control of many of the US’s IT systems or about what to do to soften the blow of the tariffs that are about to impact everyone’s daily lives.

(I also spent quite a lot of time applying for UK-based roles this weekend just to see if I can get more GBP-based income sooner rather than later, and caught up on season two of Severance.)

I will say this, however: Brexit has been a disaster. It’s made Britain poorer and weaker. The original referendum vote was 52%-48%, but today, 55% of Britons now believe Brexit was the wrong choice, and that it has had a major negative impact on many aspects of UK life:

It's Always February 2nd, and There's Nothing I Can Do About It 1

The result of the non-binding Brexit referendum, and the very binding decision to go ahead with it, dictate everything that’s happening in UK politics. It is always Brexit Day over here, and will be until some government comes along that has the courage to truly re-set the terms of our relationship with the EU. It does not look like the current government has that courage. They are picking loose threads here and there, doing little bits of realignment, but rejoining is a non-starter. Honestly, it probably would be for the EU, too – why trust a Labour government’s promises today when a Reform one might sweep in sometime in 2029?

So for now, the country is going to be trapped in this vicious cycle it chose for itself, endlessly bumping up against the same Brexit issues and having the same Brexit arguments. It is quite possibly the most damaging decision a democratic society has made for itself in the post-war period.

Or at least, it was until this past November.

Five years from now, the US is likely to find itself trapped in a similar version of Groundhog Day – dealing with the isolationism, social unrest, and throttled prosperity that a plurality of citizens once endorsed.

Anyway, ready or not, here comes another working week. Keep your loved ones safe and your congressional reps on speed dial.

Just a quick post to try to tap your expertise. I was given an award at work, which gets me my choice of stuff from the awards central site. The only thing on their I might even remotely be interested in is one of the bicycles. This is they one that requires the most points, though it is still under my overall total points to “spend.” I don’t know anything about modern bikes. The last bike I had was a very heavy 10 or 12 speed when I was in high school. Anyone know if this Kent Shogun T1000 is decent? The other option at the top of the points range is this Kent Hawkeye mountain bike.

Any info on these would be greatly appreciated. These would pretty much be the only things I would use. I don’t need more luggage, I don’t camp so don’t need any of that stuff, don’t need any more HD TVs, don’t play video games so I don’t need an XBox, the gift cards are all for places I don’t shop or eat at, etc.

Thanks!

I’ll check back later.

Do All The Things

This post is in: Open Threads

Here are a few unconnected thoughts about activism during the coup.

First, Betty’s post earlier this morning is spot on.  It’s a good time to call Republicans if one represents you.  In addition to what Frosty said, if you have a relative in the nursing home, ask them if they’re safe from unelected dictator Elon Musk, or if they’re going to freeze when the heat is cut off for nonpayment.

Second, I think there’s a widespread belief that Trump will shoot protesters.  I’m guessing that will come at some point, but my affairs are settled, so I’m still looking for opportunities to engage in and document protests.  I was looking for opportunities to protest in the Denver area and came up short.  There were some protests last weekend that I missed.  Indivisible, MoveOn and Working Families Party are having a zoom tonight about possible action.  I can’t make it, but if any of you are joining, you can email me at: [email protected] and I’ll publish your report on the front page.  Also, please share any resources you might have in the comments or via email to me.  (Update:  If you’re concerned about sending something securely, you can get a free Proton Mail account and mail me at [email protected] )

Third, it’s still worthwhile to call your Democratic Senators and Reps if you have them.  I feel like they started getting more engaged in the last couple of days.  This post by one of the leaders of Indivisible has the memo that Republicans sent to their members when they were fighting Universal Health Care.  It lists all the ways that Senators can delay or gum up the works.  You could reference that memo when calling your Senator and asking them to slow everything down.

Finally, I thought Oliver Willis was right about this, which is more inspiration for your calls to national, state and local Democrats who might not think that speaking out matters.  It’s also good advice about protests.

Do All The Things

Update:  It looks like one action is 50 States 50 Protests on Feb 5.  The Colorado one will be at the State Capital between 12PM-8PM.

Yesterday in Mistermix’s post on the Musk junta, Kay made the following observation:

Just a reminder that Republicans in Congress could end this in a day. If a majority or even substantial.minority of US Senators and House members came out and said a South African billionaire cannot run the United States that would stop this madness. Every single one if them is complicit. Every single one of them is doing this to federal employees and the US public. Their cowardice and lack of patriotism is allowing this to continue.

100% true. Commenter Frosty plans to adapt that message for a call to a worthless Republican House backbencher. That in turn inspired commenter tobie to leave the following message via a Freedom Caucus lunkhead’s constituent communication form:

I did not vote for Elon Musk for President. DOGE is not a Congressionally authorized agency of the federal government. Mr. Musk has not been confirmed by the Senate to run any agency of the federal government. Neither he nor his employees have had background checks. Yet they have been given full access to my personal data and the data of hundreds of millions of Americans, American businesses, and contractors in the US and abroad and have downloaded this data onto private servers. This is a breathtaking breach of Americans’ privacy and a serious threat to national security. Who can ensure that this information will not end up in the hands of foreign governments and/or hostile non-state actors? You have a duty to the Constitution. Mr. Musk’s access to and now possession of information on every US citizen, resident and business is a violation of US law. Congress must stop this takeover of the US government by an unvetted private interest.

Today Mr. Musk and Mike Flynn bragged on X about cutting Congressionally authorized payments to Lutheran Family Services. Imagine if a Democratic donor, outside the government, were given the authority to cut funding to Foundations of Life Pregnancy Centers? You would be up in arms. The issue is not ideology. It is the forking over of the US government to an unelected, unvetted, and unauthorized individual to do as he pleases with this massive power. Some might call this a takeover of the government, yet the duly elected representatives of the people are silent on this issue. I am stunned.

Well done, all!

Whether we’re represented by Republicans or Democrats, all of us can reach out and let our reps know exactly what we think of this illegal government takeover by the unelected sieg heil guy.

That’s it. That’s the fucking update. Everything else tonight is just details.

Almost all of eastern and central Ukraine is back under air raid alert at 8:00 PM EST/3:00 AM local time in Ukraine. Right now it’s drone swarms, but as we’ve seen the last several nights, Russia follows them with ballistic missiles.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

There Must Be No Ways Left to Supply Russia with Critical Components for Its Defense Industry; Any Violation of Sanctions Must Be Considered Complicity in the War – Address by the President

1 February 2025 – 20:05

Dear Ukrainians!

Currently, efforts are still underway in Poltava after last night’s strike. As of now, 17 people are known to have been affected. All of them have received assistance. Twenty-two people have been rescued. More people are still being searched for under the rubble. At the moment, the list of fatalities, tragically, includes 8 names. My condolences to their families and loved ones.

In total, last night alone, the Russians launched 165 missiles and drones – of various types. In addition to the Poltava region, the Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk regions were also hit.

Odesa is recovering from yesterday’s strikes on the city center. Museums, the philharmonic, many historic buildings, and a famous Odesa hotel were damaged. Not only Ukrainians, but even Norwegian diplomats working in Ukraine were caught under attack in Odesa.

We must always be absolutely honest about this Russian terror: they wouldn’t be able to cause such damage so intensely and literally every night on their own. Every Russian “Shahed” drone, every Russian missile – these are components made in other countries. One hundred and sixty-five strike units in one Russian night strike – all these Iskanders, Kalibr missiles and other means of killing – mean hundreds or even thousands of components from other countries. European countries, China, and even America.

Without such critical components, Russia will have no ability to destroy the lives of other nations. Therefore, it is critical that sanctions be truly strong and impossible to circumvent under any circumstances. There must be no ways left to supply Russia with critical components for its defense industry. Any violation of sanctions must be considered complicity in the war, and those who help destroy lives must be held accountable.

And I certainly want to thank today our Ukrainian rescuers, doctors, all medical workers, our volunteers – all those who are helping. In the Kharkiv region, Sumy and all the communities of the region, Chernihiv, Poltava and the region, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Donetsk regions, the communities of our south: Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Kherson, our Odesa regions as well – and in every place where missiles and “Shahed” drones pose a threat night and day, in every place where lives must be saved. I thank everyone who is always on call, always helping. And of course – our mobile fire groups, all air defense units, our combat aircraft involved in the defense of our skies. Thank you!

Now we are working to attract more resources and partners to strengthen the Ukrainian air shield. Protection against shelling is an absolute priority. Much more needs to be done, but every one of our partners in the world who helps us with this is a life saver. And this is what everyone in the world should be thinking about now: about lives, about cooperation, about putting pressure on the aggressor and about bringing real peace closer. Peace that Russia will not grant. Peace that they can only be pressured into. And we will do it!

Glory to Ukraine!

🔴 Roads of international importance have been added to the list of strategic locations, meaning that closing them is now a criminal penalty rather than administrative. This was done on January 31, two days before the announced February 2 blockage of the Tbilisi city entrance (east-west highway); 2/

“Either you come with us voluntarily, or we’ll have to do dirty stuff,” the regime police threatened Nancy Woland (pseudonym), one of the admins of the self-organized Facebook group. This was a threat of something being planted in her home. Her lawyer says. #terrorinGeorgia

Activist Nancy Woland, the creator of the FB group ‘Daitove,’ which has almost 300K members and is the related to the protests, says that the police came to her and are planning to conduct a search forcibly and without a lawyer.

‪The police have finished searching Nancy, but they remain standing in the hallway. They are neither locking the apartment door nor allowing a neutral witness or a lawyer to leave. Lawyer called 112 to report that he and others were being illegally deprived of their liberty.‬

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) February 1, 2025 at 8:16 AM

The lawyer says that police a few branded masks and blankets from Nancy Woland’s home. After the search was completed, an unknown person broke into the apartment and stole the phone of Nancy’s mother, who was filming the post-search situation in the house.

Regime police in Georgia are looters, on top of it all. While raiding Isako Dolidze’s home today, who was later detained (again), they took GEL2000 (USD700) which the family took as a loan for his mother’s surgery.
People gathered funds for her in 23 minutes. #terrorinGeorgia

According to the lawyer, police officers physically assaulted Isako Devidze multiple times.

The lawyer stated, ‘For four hours, they questioned him: Who is supposed to block the road? What will happen at the rally tomorrow? What training have you undergone?’

Georgians seem to be at the cusp of wanting the regime to collapse internally, as was the priority in January, and preparing themselves for the idea that the regime will need to be removed, albeit in a non-violent effort. Each day there are no sanctions from abroad poses new risks for public safety.

Lot of that sentiment going around.

Back to Ukraine.

And thus Ukraine endured 1/3 of the 3rd winter of war during which Russia tried to plunge it into the cold and dark with strategic missile attacks; the third winter that many were again saying Ukraine would not survive.

⚡️Russia strikes nursing home in Kursk region’s Sudzha, Ukraine’s General Staff reports.

“At the time of the attack, dozens of local residents were inside the building preparing to evacuate,” Ukraine’s military said on Feb. 1, adding that nearly 95 people could be trapped under the rubble.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) February 1, 2025 at 3:03 PM

From The Kyiv Independent:

A Russian strike targeted a nursing home in the Ukrainian-captured town of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk Oblast on Feb. 1, the Ukrainian military alleged.

The building, which served as a shelter, primarily housed elderly residents.

At least four people were killed in the attack, while 84 people have been rescued. Four of them were injured and remain in critical condition. Search and rescue operations are ongoing as more people could be trapped under the rubble.

The Kyiv Independent could not immediately verify these claims.

“At the time of the attack, dozens of local residents were inside the building preparing to evacuate,” Ukraine’s General Staff said. “The Russians knew that the building housed mainly civilians – local residents, including women and children. Everything possible is being done to rescue the survivors.”

Officials have yet to confirm casualties, but emergency crews have been dispatched to the scene.

Ukraine’s Air Force said that a Russian plane targeted the building with a KAB guided aerial bomb and published screenshots purporting to show the bomb’s flight path. The screenshots are from the Virage Tablet system, an automated software program the Air Force uses to track aerial threats.

There is “indisputable evidence” that Russia carried out the airstrike against Sudzha, the Air Force said.

The Air Force also said that attacks on civilians, including their own, are a “trademark” of Russian warfare.

On Jan. 11, Russian forces carried out a double airstrike on the same nursing home in Sudzha. The attack, which took place on the evening of Jan. 11, left one woman with severe arm injuries, who died later in the morning of Jan. 12, Ukrainian military spokesperson Oleksii Dmytrashkivskyi said.

Ukrainian forces launched a large-scale operation in Kursk Oblast in early August, allegedly capturing up to 1,300 square kilometers (500 square miles) of Russian soil. Since then, Russia has deployed reinforcements — including North Korean soldiers — in the area and reportedly retook around half of the lost territory.

That’s enough for tonight.
