Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

People are complicated. Love is not.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Let there be snark.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Not all heroes wear capes.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Be a wild strawberry.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

The problem with the replace Biden effort is that it’s not really there, what we are mainly seeing is a bunch of panicked self-defeating efforts to survive or people getting their “I told you so” article ready. Not exactly unreasonable to see it as annoying.

Late Night Open Thread: RFK Jr & TFG, Grifter Cronies

by Anne Laurie|  July 18, 20243:55 am| 68 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Grifters Gonna Grift, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Trump Crime Cartel

1. Trump and RFK are peddling vaccine conspiracy theories

2. Trump seems to be urging RFK to stay in the race because he thinks it’ll help against Biden (Trump: we’re going to win RFK: yeah)

3. Trump admits Biden is a very nice guy. https://t.co/q77CIEg7ZY

— Angry Staffer ?? (@Angry_Staffer) July 16, 2024

Trump’s dim-witted rant about infant vaccinations is the bit that attracted the immediate headlines (I suspect because Barron Trump’s neurological status has become a topic of more gossip among Very Serious Media types than his sire’s), but the whole conversation is one for the history books. Trump assumes, as of course he would, that RFK Jr is only running because he wants a job (or at least public attention); Bobby himself is quite happy to go along with this theory. We can work so well together!

As of this minute, Bobby Jr Jr’s tweet is still online, and this is part of it:

…There’s a few things you should take from this video:

1. It’s great that Trump and RFK are able to speak, the country needs some unity.

2. Trumps attacks on RFK in the public have been complete lies. He said he didn’t know who RFK was and acknowledges here they’ve talked a long time ago. He’s also attacked RFK for his stance on vaccines when in reality he is in complete agreement with him.

3. Trump wants RFK to join his campaign in some format here so any future attacks on him saying he doesn’t want him are just a lie…

Per the Guardian:

… In posting the recording, Bobby Kennedy III also suggested Anthony Fauci, formerly Biden’s chief medical adviser, should be in prison; appeared to suggest his father should have been Trump’s running mate on a “unity ticket” rather than “JD ‘fire all the unvaccinated nurses’ Vance”, the Ohio senator named on Monday; and implied Republicans and Democrats were subordinate to Pfizer, a multinational vaccine producer.

Kennedy III added: “This is not a cheapfake or somebody doing a Trump voice. This is the real deal.”…

Kennedy’s spokesperson, Stephanie Spear, confirmed the two men met at the RNC in Milwaukee, claiming it was “to discuss national unity” and saying that Kennedy “hopes to meet with leaders of the Democratic party as well.

“And no, he is not dropping out of the race. He is the only pro-environment, pro-choice, anti-war candidate who beats Donald Trump in head-to-head polls.”

Translation from the weaselspeak: He is absolutely open to dropping out, and endorsing Trump for his cultist followers, but only if he’s guaranteed a choice spot in Trump’s future cabinet — maybe Dr. Fauci’s old job.

Predictable blowback:

When President Trump called me I was taping with an in-house videographer. I should have ordered the videographer to stop recording immediately. I am mortified that this was posted. I apologize to the president.

— Robert F. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) July 16, 2024

Politico, Wednesday afternoon, “Where’s Robert F. Kennedy Jr.?”:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been silent in a moment of significant volatility in the presidential election.

The independent candidate, who has sought to be the biggest threat to the two major parties in a generation, has canceled key campaign appearances in the last two weeks. He hasn’t sent a fundraising email since Saturday. And after trying repeatedly to counterprogram past events in the election, including June’s debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, Kennedy is doing little to shift the focus away from the Republican National Convention or to exploit a raft of questions from Democrats over whether Biden should still be the nominee.

Instead, Kennedy sparked a round of speculation after talking with Trump on Monday, prompting him to use his official social media account to quash the rumors on social media: “No, I am not dropping out of the race,” he posted on X…

Last week, as Democrats have been grappling with Biden’s poor debate performance, Kennedy announced a major news conference at the National Press Club in Washington to “present a solution to the mounting political crisis” — only to cancel it for the day. The campaign, which has repeatedly derided Biden’s leadership, said it was postponing “out of respect for President Biden’s solo press conference scheduled for the same day.” Nothing has been rescheduled so far. He instead posted a video offering himself as a replacement nominee for the party, which he left last fall.

And it did seem like Kennedy was planning to present some counter programming at the RNC. Kennedy had been scheduled for a virtual interview at the CNN-POLITICO Grill in Milwaukee on Monday. But it never happened.

“Mr Kennedy’s schedule has changed and we can no longer do the interview,” said Stefanie Spear, the campaign’s spokesperson.

He also planned to host a Boomer Town Hall on Facebook Live to answer questions from “fellow baby boomers” on Tuesday. The event was then postponed. And Kennedy planned to meet with farmers in Baraboo, about two hours from Milwaukee, on Wednesday afternoon to discuss agriculture regulation. That campaign stop was also pulled from his schedule…

A cynic might wonder if the Topic of the Day video was leaked to force the Trump campaign’s hand. Give me a deal, or I go to the gutter media!

Argument that it ain’t gonna happen:

Trump Jr. says he would love to see RFK Jr. part of Trump’s cabinet:

“I think maybe that's one of those moments that brings people together.

There's a great place for him somewhere in the administration. Not saying I agree with him on a lot of things, I think we're probably… pic.twitter.com/HVgNtVSJYT

— End Tribalism in Politics (@EndTribalism) July 17, 2024

The Donfather is notoriously unlikely to take Fredo’s opinion seriously, for reasons.

Leaked video of a call between Donald Trump and RFK Jr. appears to show the current opponents talking about the failed assassination attempt on the former president, his post-shooting call with President Joe Biden, and distrusting vaccinations. https://t.co/xZFRMfOiFE

— VANITY FAIR (@VanityFair) July 16, 2024

… Trump also appeared to discuss a future together for the two men—and their ideas.

“Anyway, I would be, I would love you to do so,” Trump said in the video leaked to X on Tuesday morning, seemingly hinting at something Kennedy and him weighed earlier in the call. It’s unclear whether the former president was referring to a spot for the independent candidate in a future Trump administration, encouraging him to drop out and issue an endorsement, or some other potential offer.

“It would be so good for you and so big for you. And we’re gonna win. We’re gonna win. We’re way ahead of the guy,” Trump continued. In some recent polls, the former president is leading Biden by single digits…

At one point in the call, Trump mentioned Biden reaching out to him the evening of the violent Pennsylvania rally.

“You know it was interesting, it was very nice, actually. He called me and he said, ‘How did you choose to move to the right?’” Trump told Kennedy. “I said ‘I was just showing a chart,’ I didn’t have to tell him the chart was on all the people pouring into our country.”…

Prior to the leak, Kennedy claimed that his call with Trump was focused on unifying the country.

“Lots of rumors going around about my meeting this morning with President Trump,” he posted to X on Monday. “Our main topic was national unity, and I hope to meet with Democratic leaders about that as well. No, I am not dropping out of the race.”

National unity. Like a team of horses under one harness, one whip.

If Biden was caught on tape saying something like this, every editorial board in America would demand he immediately take a psychological exam, but Trump says it and it's ignored. I don't make the rules ?? pic.twitter.com/fuS5gFxYmV

Republican Politics Open Thread: Who Goes Nazi, Sen. Vance?

Interesting move to go from “he might be America’s Hitler” to “is he hiring?”

"Who Goes Nazi?" by Dorothy Thompson all the way in 1941 had J.D. Vance's deal down cold pic.twitter.com/koBzUP4LJX

— late modern malik kafur (@opheliamoding) July 15, 2024

The above tweet seemed so pat that I had to go check the source. Sure enough, back in 1941, when too many Americans were complaining that The Europeans have no claims on American assistance, and besides, are we sure Hitler doesn’t have the right idea about dealing with Those People?, Dorothy Parker Thompson wrote about the people who would be just as happy to wear a swastika armband. Who Goes Nazi? :

… The saturnine man over there talking with a lovely French emigree is already a Nazi. Mr. C is a brilliant and embittered intellectual. He was a poor white-trash Southern boy, a scholarship student at two universities where he took all the scholastic honors but was never invited to join a fraternity. His brilliant gifts won for him successively government positions, partnership in a prominent law firm, and eventually a highly paid job as a Wall Street adviser. He has always moved among important people and always been socially on the periphery. His colleagues have admired his brains and exploited them, but they have seldom invited him—or his wife—to dinner.

He is a snob, loathing his own snobbery. He despises the men about him—he despises, for instance, Mr. B—because he knows that what he has had to achieve by relentless work men like B have won by knowing the right people. But his contempt is inextricably mingled with envy. Even more than he hates the class into which he has insecurely risen, does he hate the people from whom he came. He hates his mother and his father for being his parents. He loathes everything that reminds him of his origins and his humiliations. He is bitterly anti-Semitic because the social insecurity of the Jews reminds him of his own psychological insecurity.

Pity he has utterly erased from his nature, and joy he has never known. He has an ambition, bitter and burning. It is to rise to such an eminence that no one can ever again humiliate him. Not to rule but to be the secret ruler, pulling the strings of puppets created by his brains. Already some of them are talking his language—though they have never met him.

There he sits: he talks awkwardly rather than glibly; he is courteous. He commands a distant and cold respect. But he is a very dangerous man. Were he primitive and brutal he would be a criminal—a murderer. But he is subtle and cruel. He would rise high in a Nazi regime…

I don't think voters will care about Vance's hypocrisy in itself, but I think framing it as a "he sold everyone and everything else out, what makes you think he won't sell you out this time too?" type thing might be somewhat effective.

One more time, in honor of JD Vance, who is a legitimate fascist:
inthesetimes.com/article/nati…

— Hamilton Nolan (@hamiltonnolan.bsky.social) Jul 15, 2024 at 3:25 PM

Hamilton Nolan, for In These Times, on J.D. Vance at this year’s National Conservatism Conference:

… On the last evening of the conference, the big room’s chairs were replaced with round tables, and hundreds of attendees filed in for the final VIP dinner. Over salad, they heard from Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, a National Conservatism Conference veteran who is riding high on the chatter that he may become Trump’s vice presidential nominee. That could represent a tangible bridge between the conference’s organizers and intellectual backers and the Oval Office. Vance is the ideal national conservative specimen, a man who preaches heartland values but wears a nice suit and looks like he sleeps in a vat of lotion.

The entire right-wing D.C. think tank infrastructure is designed to produce this sort of man. Delivered with a little polish, all sorts of crazy things can be made to sound palatable. Vance has the soothing mannerisms of a mid-market TV anchor, lacing his fingers in front of him and softly punctuating his sentences, smiling and making mildly funny jokes. This is just the sort of sweetness that can help you swallow poison. He spoke about how immigration made America poorer and less safe, grounding his points with stories about small towns in Ohio suffering under the burden of an influx of newly arrived Haitians, who strained municipal budgets. He leapt nimbly on, from the frustrations of small town Americans to love of family to something that grew darker, like twilight creeping in imperceptibly.

“America is not just an idea, though we were founded on great ideas. America is a nation. It is a group of people with a common history, and a common future.” He spoke of his family’s roots in one of the poorest parts of Kentucky, a long way from where he stood under that Capital Hilton chandelier. There, he said, “They are very good people. They are people who love this country — not because it’s a good idea, but because in their bones, they know that this is their home, and it will be their children’s home, and they would die fighting to protect it.”…

STOP! Yells national conservatism. Abandon your questioning mind. Sink into the warm bath of faith. As Vance concluded, the entire room stood up to cheer. For God! For family! For marriage! For breeding! For Trump! For triumph! Hundreds of young conservatives ingested their mission. They are the soldiers in the war between good and evil that all of their elders assure them is imminent. And they will march onward, an army in brown dress shoes and navy blue blazers, to seize back the imperial city, or to fall as glorious martyrs in the effort.

Today We Managed to Free Another 95 of Our People from Russian Captivity – Address by the President

17 July 2024 – 20:14

Dear Ukrainians!

Today is already the tenth anniversary of the day when the Russian occupiers destroyed a passenger plane in the Ukrainian skies – flight MH-17. A Malaysian Boeing with 298 people on board, including 80 children. Citizens of different countries, from various parts of the world. The Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Germany, Canada, Belgium, the Philippines, New Zealand. And over the time that has passed, it has been possible to fully establish the circumstances of this crime: how it became possible, who provided it. And there is no doubt that the trial and the work of international justice, in general, will inevitably lead to absolutely fair verdicts for everyone who is guilty of this crime. And that is exactly what is needed. No matter how much effort is required – there must be accountability for all those who brought this evil, as they are the evil themselves. And the same applies to the thousands of other Russian crimes of this war and this aggression itself – after all this, a lasting peace can only be based on a satisfied sense of justice for those who suffered from the aggression. And everyone in Ukraine who is working for justice, everyone in the world who is helping us, especially the Netherlands, which in many respects is a leader in the field of justice – I am grateful to everyone, to everyone who is putting the Russian evil in its place and helping us to prevent Moscow from feeling impunity. Bright and eternal memory to all those whose lives were taken by Russia!

Today, our team engaged in the search and exchange of Ukrainian prisoners managed to free another 95 of our people from Russian captivity. They are warriors from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and border guards. Most of the people in today’s exchange are privates and sergeants, seven are officers. Many of them have been seriously injured, one of the guys has cancer. Everyone will get the help they need. And it is important that, among these guys, there is one who was considered a missing person. We are looking into all the circumstances of each of our warriors, and it is a blessing when we manage to find those for whom we had the least hope. In total, we have managed to bring home 3,405 people from Russian captivity. We must bring them all back. We are doing our best to ensure this. I thank everyone in the world who is helping. I am grateful to the United Arab Emirates for mediating today’s release.

And a few other things.

We are working to make this week really productive in terms of relations with our partners. Today I held a meeting with the foreign policy team of the Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We need strong decisions from our partners that will allow us to put this war on a course to its just conclusion. And I thank everyone who shows appropriate leadership. Honest leadership.

I also signed a decree today that enacts the National Security and Defense Council’s decision on the new Maritime Security Strategy of Ukraine. This document takes into account the security changes and innovations that we have ensured, particularly in the Black Sea, in the development of our forces. This is a modern strategy, and we will implement it together with our partners. In the near future, I am going to discuss the details of this Strategy with them. With those who, like us, want stable security for their regions and for the entire world. I thank everyone who is helping! I also thank all employees of our state institutions, our warriors, our special services and all representatives of Ukrainian civil society who were involved in the preparation of the Strategy.

Glory to our people!

Glory to Ukraine!

Love is: destroy the occupiers together.

Today is the 10th anniversary of Russia’s attack on MH17.

I’m still astounded that MH17 didn’t really have any impact on public or political attitudes to Russia. Three hundred people killed in cold blood by Russian military actors and nothing happened. A big collective shrug.

Ten years ago Russian separatists shot down MH17, murdering nearly 300 people, using a Buk launcher transferred from Russia on the day of the act. Russia then issued a blizzard of complete lies to conceal this fact, a charade it maintains to the present.https://t.co/d9ID74haax

10 years since the Russian downing of the MH17 flight over occupied Ukraine.

Acts of wickedness produce even more evil.

So, amid a filthy undeclared war in Ukraine’s Donbas, while arming and leading proxy armies against Ukraine and vehemently denying its involvement (that it boasts about as its ‘brilliant special operations’ now), amid typical Soviet-style mess and incompetence — the unmarked Russian military personnel and their “retired” proxy militants accidentally downed a Boeing full of innocent people from all around the world.

Not only did they boast about that (mistaking a civilian Boeing for a Ukrainian military aircraft), not only did they pose for pictures amid the debris, not only did they restrict access of international monitors to the crash scene.

What followed was genuinely the most shameless, outrageous, and heinous campaigns of lies, propaganda, and disinformation in modern history.

You all remember that kaleidoscope of the most idiotic “versions” thrown in by the Kremlin to create a wall of media white noise over the catastrophe — from lame photoshopped fake images of “a Ukrainian Su-25 downing the Boeing” to “air traffic controller Carlos” (who was later exposed as a wanted Spanish small-time fraudster paid by Russia Today) and to the “airplane full of dead bodies” purposefully crashed to compromise Russia.

Up to this day, Putin and his frauds continue juggling with all sorts of wild conspiracy theories possible over the MH-17 downing.

A never-ending torrent of dumb lies that fail to stand up to the simplest verification, again and again, for 10 years.

Everyone is to blame, from Ukraine to international air traffic regulations — but not Russia, which secretly brought a Buk-M1 surface-to-air system from Russia’s 53rd Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade to occupied Donbas to be used against Ukraine.

And of course, in July 2015, Russia vetoed the inception of an international tribunal at the UN Security Council — of course, it was because there was a global anti-Russian conspiracy in having a proper, internationally controlled investigation of the downing.

Yet, thanks to @bellingcat, the Joint Investigation Team, and the Dutch Safety Board, we know everything about what happened on that day in 2014.

We know in detail how the Buk was transported from Russia to occupied Donbas and who was doing it. We know who was using it and where exactly it was from.

We know how exactly it downed the MH-17, killing 298 people, and we know how Russians were hastily trying to get rid of incriminating evidence, particularly the very Buk-M1 system, after they realized what had just happened.

All facts, unlike the avalanches of Russian propaganda sprees, were carefully verified many times over by journalists and court investigators.

Pictures, phone calls, satellite images, reconstructed chains of events, technical expertise.

Yet, no one has been held responsible for the worst air crash of the 21st century.

The evil was never punished for inciting a regional proxy war and the downing of a civilian airliner.

Unpunished, it returned to unleash the worst European war of aggression since WWII, with hundreds of thousands dead and entire cities and regions turned into mass graves amid debris.

What will it do next as it stays unpunished again and again?

A solemn anniversary: Today marks 10 years since Russian forces shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 with a Buk missile as it flew over the battlefields of eastern Ukraine. All 298 people, and including 80 children, on board were killed. Only partial justice has been served, with 4 men convicted in absentia for their roles. At the time, those of us on the ground at the horrific crash site thought it could be a turning point in Russia’s then 3-month old war. Alas, it dragged on for years until exploding into the largest and deadliest war on European soil since WW2. There is still no end in sight.

Just to make it clear, Russia’s attack on flight MH17 was an act of war. An attack on a Dutch civilian target. Russia has been lying about its responsibility for a decade and the world has let it get away with this crime against humanity. Which is one of the major drivers behind Putin’s behavior. He probes and always finds mush. The one time he didn’t was in his attempt to take all of Ukraine in February 2022. If you want Putin’s behavior to change, and, as a result, Russia’s, then instead of constantly being rewarded for his acts of war, war crimes, and crimes against humanity he needs to instead be punished. Until or unless a state or an alliance of states powerful enough to do so imposes those punishments, he will continue on his current course.

Both Strelkov and Prigozhin said Russia launched the war against Ukraine. Strelkov said that without him, Ukrainian security forces would have taken control of occupied territories. Prigozhin went much further to say that the war was needed by oligarchs, that there was nothing extraordinary happening on 24 February that would trigger an invasion, and that the MoD was lying about NATO plans to invade Russia.

And yet David Sacks stands there in front of an audience saying Russia was provoked to invade.

Is he working in the interests of truth?

Useful idiot. Emphasis on the idiot.

Kharkiv Oblast knows no peace. On days when my reports are absent, it’s not because the attacks have ceased but because the fragments of information are too sparse to piece together. Yet, the relentless attacks continues unabated. Russian forces bombard the region daily, with dozens of aerial bombs reducing towns and villages to ruins. Even in silence, the devastation endures.

And remember, because of where in Russia these are launched from, Ukraine cannot either fire first to suppress the attacks or counter-fire against the strikes.

For want of a nail.

Putin is afraid to vacation at his residence in Sochi.

Yesterday, he opened traffic on the Northern Tver Bypass. Putin came to the event from his residence in Valdai, where he will spend his summer vacation, sources of Russian Telegram channel VChK-OGPU report.

The reason is very prosaic – Putin has a panic fear for his life, and the Russian defense ministry is unable to provide security on the Black Sea coast.

Putin is trying to turn the Valdai residence into an impregnable fortress. It is stuffed with various air defense systems, including the S-400/300 division and the Pantsir-S1 air defense system. Also, the skies above the residence are guarded by Su-35s’ and even Mig31 from the military base of the Russian Air Force in Khotilovo.

Radio Svoboda has noticed the Pantsyr-S1air defense complex 3,7 kilometers from Putin’s residence – it is visible on satellite photos. The air defense system stands on a tower. Journalists think it was brought there in March 2024. They found no less than seven air defense complexes in total.

Russian Astra Telegram channel quotes its follower and writes that two more objects that are similar to air defense complexes are located about 3 kilometers from the same residence.

NEXTA Telegram channel has counted at least 7 Pantsyr-S1 air defense complexes, 11 S-300/400 air defense complexes, and early warning radar stations.

Those Pantsir and S300s and S400s are legit military targets. It would be fitting if someone eliminated them.

That’s enough for tonight.

On July 14, a Russian bomb partly ruined a 5-story residential building, killing three and injuring seven.

Minutes before the attack, the cat began meowing and calling his owner lady to come to the apartment room that soon ended up being safe in the attack.

So the cat unknowingly saved the owner’s life. He was scared but rescued intact, too, and returned to his hooman.

And a battle cat!

I’m not even going to link to the media outlet that posted this article.

Nor am I going to post the photograph.

Anyone who isn’t working their behind off to get Biden elected either needs to wake up or get their priorities straight.

Let’s set an example for folks who may not have figure out how to help yet.
