Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Everybody saw this coming.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Their shamelessness is their super power.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

If this is true, we are all doomed…

This post is in: Open Threads, Assholes

Over at Huffington Post I came across a jaw dropper on their front page and here it is with my notations:

Lanny-is-an-ass

Lanny Davis is a “Top Democrat”? Really?

Seriously, WTF. If this is true we are doomed. Lanny is a DC whore who will dance to any tune played by any piper who will pay Lanny’s fee. Jack Abramoff used to use Lanny to place stories in ‘respectable’ newspapers back in the day. The guy is an example of all that is wrong with Washington DC–left, right and center.

If he is a “Top Democrat” we are doomed.

Fortunately he is not. He is only a “Democrat” let alone a “Top Democrat” in the fevered imaginations of media whores everywhere. His main stock-in-trade is ginning up and/or commenting on freshly invented “Clinton Wars”, especially if the imagined spat is between a mythical “Camp Clinton” and real Democrats and/or real progressives.

This meme is irresistible to fools the media. “Clinton Wars” are catnip for cable teevee and lazy online eyeball collectors and so Lanny will always get a hype bump and a little scratch. That’s fine. Lanny and the rest of the pundit celebrities should be able to fleece the gullible–it is how they make their grifter living after all, but please, let’s not pretend that any of these wankers are “top” anything. They are bottom feeders, one and all.

And yes, please treat this small rant about a small man as an open thread.

Cheers

Of mice and men

I’m a bit sick of O’DonnellGate already, but TPM is doing yeoman’s work digging up all the crazy shit she said. My favorite so far is this:

American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains.

And all this from a Claremont Institute Lincoln Fellow.

There’s a Burkean brouhaha raging: is O’Donnell a real Merkin who speaks too plainly for the ears of the elite or is she an idiot nutsoid? The truth is she’s a nutsoid who was nurtured by the creme de la creme of serious, high-brow conservative institutions (the same one that birthed Conor Friedersdorf published five or six op-ed length pieces that Conor Friedersdorf wrote early in his career. ). If she hadn’t talked so much about masturbation and “man pants” and man-mice hybrids, we’d be hearing about her prestigious intellectual pedigree.

Our weekly dispatch from TaMara:

September is Disaster Preparedness Month. Are you prepared? I used to be a Disaster Relief Coordinator, so I’m a little preachy on this subject. I’ve been in hurricanes, earthquakes, 3-day blizzards and spent many a stormy night in the basement during tornado warnings. I’ve helped more people than I can count after home fires. And one week it was a broken water main, leaving me scrambling to figure out how to get fresh water to us, three Great Danes, 2 cats and a duck. These are all things made a bit easier if you have some type of plan in place.
__
In other news, we have a new blog mascot, a kitten who has seen some hard times. His name is Homer and he now resides at the home of JeffW and Mrs. J in a pretty red cast and with a total look of trouble in his eyes. If you can look at the pictures without saying “aaaaahhhh” then you are made of stronger stuff than I am.
__
I thought we’d send summer out with a bang and do a spicy grilled mix and some fruit cobbler. I am a summer worshiper and I mourn its passing. Let’s have a moment of silen…okay, done now. Bring on the fall foods!
__
On the board tonight:
__
1. Fajita Chicken & Vegetable Kabobs
__
2. Black Beans
__
3. Rice
__
4. Fruit Cobbler

Recipes and shopping list at the link. And here is a picture of Homer so you will click over to read about him:

It has been rainy and cold and dark all day today, and dad dropped off some homemade chicken soup, so I’m going to have some soup, watch a movie on netflix, and then chow down on a little frozen yogurt.

I’m just loving netflix. Watched the International, Traitor, and Defiance in the last couple of days. Loved the International, thought the Traitor was good, and Defiance was worth watching bet felt sort of low budget (the story itself is pretty amazing, although not quite as straightforward as the movie would suggest). Not sure what I am going to watch tonight.

BTW- did you all catch the piece on the Fawlty Towers on PRI’s the World, today?

Finally, no need to guess who the trash bandit is any more. Those of you who had money on Rosalita win. How do I know this? Because earlier, as I was sitting at the computer, she brazenly walked up next to me and started rooting around in the trash can. Damned dogs think they run this house.

When a man loves a woman

Neocons love Palin, but there is no way this will ever happen:

I somehow missed John Bolton’s recent efforts to interest Republicans in a possible Bolton presidential run in 2012.

[….]

But what if Palin isn’t the nominee? Or what if she is, but cooler heads prevail when she and her crew pick a running mate?

I think it could be Bolton? Why not? His are is foreign policy. The Belrway defines him as “serious.” And we know you suffer no penalty, ever, in national politics for being 100% wrong about anything if you’re coming from the right.

Bolton passes the John Fucking Bolton test (I can’t decide whether or not his brother Michael does yet), but that’s about it. America’s just not ready for that kind of mustache. But it’s worth thinking about if only to read some spoofy brilliance from Hillbuzz (that site is a spoof, right?):

A lot of people brought this up at the Restoring Honor rally, and we’re surprised we never thought of it before…but would Ambassador John Bolton make a good running mate for Governor Sarah Palin in 2012?

The Ambassador sure would make a great attack dog on the campaign trail, against Joe Biden.

We still don’t believe Hillary Clinton would ever agree to replace Biden on the VP ticket, so don’t even go there. The only way Clinton would run as Dr. Utopia’s VP choice is if Biden discovers he has serious health problems that force him to resign in 2011…and Clinton is confirmed as the new Vice President. We think that would be her price for getting on that sinking ship of a ticket, to actually be made Vice President first, then doing what she could to help Dr. Utopia get a second term. We believe she’s smart enough to know Dr. Utopia’s going to lose…but she’d then be able to run in 2016 against President Palin as former Senator, former Secretary of State, former Vice President Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton.

From commentor Linda Eilenah:

This is Sadie. She is unbelievably sweet, exceptionally pretty (if I may offer my rather biased opinion), and an undeniable force of nature whose only purpose in life is to inhabit every horizontal surface in the house and forcibly clear said surfaces of any objects that might be in her way. She is personally responsible for a number of spilled beverages and the sole reason why various lightweight (but expensive) pieces of electronic equipment are taped to my desktop.
__
Sadie was a stray who “adopted” my daughter while she was stationed in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia while serving in the US Navy. Over the course of a week and change, my daughter was waylaid in the parking lot of her apartment complex two or three times a day by this lovely little calico kitty. She would run up to her, stopping directly in her path, plop down on the pavement, and roll over onto her back with her belly fully exposed — as if to say, “Go ahead. Take me for a test drive. Once you’ve petted this creamy white belly, you won’t be able to resist taking me home.”
__
My daughter already had two cats, and was not looking to make an addition to her household. But one rainy night, she found this feline beauty plaintively mewing at her apartment door as she stepped out to go to the grocery store. All her resistance was washed away with the rain and she made the decision on the spot to take her into her “family”.
__
My daughter afterwards reported to me that, later on that same evening, as she piled into bed with the TV tuned to one of her favorite shows, Sadie hopped up onto the bed and made a beeline straight for her side. She propped herself on my daughters leg and looked up at her adoringly, and then actually let out an audible sigh of apparent contentment and satisfaction. My daughter knew at that moment that her fate was sealed. She waited over two weeks for someone to claim their “lost” cat, all the while hoping fervently that no one would. Thankfully, no one did. She has been a part of my extended family ever since.
