Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

White supremacy is terrorism.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Open Thread: Astroturfing with Chinese Characteristics

by Anne Laurie|  September 15, 20109:17 pm| 74 Comments

This post is in: C.R.E.A.M., Foreign Affairs, Open Threads, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing

Tom Scocca at Slate poaches on Taibbi territory with a post smacking Tom Friedman’s latest idiocy: “How Will China Reckon with the Freewheeling Opinions of Its (Government-Employed) Netizens?”:

Like the Great Firewall, this mass sock-puppetry campaign is an open secret with a catchy name: the paid apologists are called the “Wu Mao Dang,” or Fifty-Cent Party, after the purported going rate (in Chinese currency) for each pro-government posting.
__
Again, this is not an obscure fact, except to Thomas Friedman. The policy of paying for Internet commentary is so well known that it has backfired, so that writers who express too much enthusiasm for the government are dismissed as paid plants. Fifty-cent banknotes have become a metonym for official deception; earlier this year, during an appearance by a provincial propaganda official at Renmin University, a protester threw 50-cent bills at the stage.
__
Can Friedman be that oblivious? Maybe the best-selling pundit is making a subtle and powerful point here. On first read, there’s no obvious connection between Friedman’s “BEIJING” dateline and the content of the column. More prepacked opinions from the globe-trotter, as usual. But by omitting any mention of the sensitive subject of the Fifty-Cent Party—or of online censorship at all—he’s capturing the authentic tone of the Chinese Internet.

Another area where America is falling behind China in properly utilizing modern technology! Why can’t the failed Obama Administration seize this bold, outside-the-box opportunity to announce a “Full Enough Employment Program” where bold Real American(tm) bloggers will be paid for pro-government posts, comments, and tweets? Just setting the proper market-competitive rates and guidelines for ideological purity would keep many newly-minted MBAs in Starbucks and iPads, not to mention the enormous potential of all those untapped MFA hipsters…

Not a big fucking deal

I was afraid this (via) would devolve into “White people drive like this, deedeedeedee, black people drive like this, DOO DOO DOO DOO“, but it was actually quite interesting. I could have lived without the reading-level analysis part (because they were all almost exactly the same, so it’s Saletan-style “edgy” without actually saying anything), but at some level I think this explains why there where will never be very many non-white people in anything like the Tea Party:

In the course of researching this article and, in particular, comparing white guys to black guys, a handy shortcut occurred to me:

If you’re trying to figure out if white dudes like something, put fucking in the middle, and say it out loud. If it sounds totally badass, white dudes probably love it. Let’s see this principle in practice:

I think you can say “small fucking government” or “second fucking amendment” but you can’t say “unemployment fucking benefits” or “health fucking care”.

Update. And here’s another perspective on race that is very popular with McMegan’s readers.

Al Franken just emailed me and told me to go support Russ Feingold’s re-election efforts. I’ll be giving through ActBlue exclusively this year, but for those of you who are interested in donating someway other than ActBlue, you can give to Russ here.

Watching the Clown Car Empty

This post is in: Election 2010, Excellent Links, Republican Stupidity

One of the small consolations of getting ringside seats to the Teabagger/Confederate Party implosion is that Charles P. Pierce will be doing a weekly series for Esquire’s Politics blog:

There is a real danger in overthinking what happened in Delaware on Tuesday night, which is not something of which the winner of the state’s GOP senatorial primary ever has been accused…
__
… Christine O’Donnell is a sideshow freak.
__
Seriously now, she was a crackpot when she rose on primary morning, and she’s a crackpot now, and she will be a crackpot whether she wins or loses in November. She no more belongs in the Senate of the United States today than she did the day she was born. That 30,000-odd primates in Delaware thinks she belongs there is their problem. If enough people in Delaware come to think so, then she becomes our problem.
__
O’Donnell is a creature of an age in which politics have no meaning beyond performance art. She is the Creature From The Green Room, with no apparent public career beyond being available whenever some teenage booker from the cable shows needed someone to say something reliably stupid… Her resume is so thin as to be opaque, and a lot of it seems to be a lie. She seems to be something of a deadbeat, and “U.S. Senator” seems to be her idea of an entry-level position. This morning, she stands one step away from the job…
__
She is what politics produces when you turn them into a game show and the coverage of them over to a generation of high-technology racetrack touts. She is what you get when political journalism reduces politics to numbers on a scoreboard, divorcing them from the real world consequences of what are increasingly seen as cute little eccentric decisions.
__
She is what politics produces when we abandon self-government for self-gratification. And that’s the real obvious irony in her victory on Tuesday night, and the only thing about it that truly matters. Christine O’Donnell’s campaign is a successful exercise in angry, misfit masturbation, with as little to do with the deadly problems this country faces as some guy wanking in the balcony of a grindhouse has to do with Romeo and Juliet.

Dave Weigel has a “Requiem for Mike Castle“:

I’m from Delaware, born in 1981, and can not remember a time when Mike Castle wasn’t being elected to something…There are two parties here: the party that does what the banks and DuPont wants, and the party that loses. Castle was the undisputed leader of the first party.
__
… There are tens of thousands of Delawareans who were expecting to vote for Mike Castle who are now given a choice between their workmanlike county executive, Chris Coons, and a woman who spent two weeks on the cover of the News Journal for stories about her trouble paying college fees, her lawsuit against her former employer ISI, her appearance in a MTV special about abstinence, etc, and etc, and etc. She got such rough treatment from the paper that she stopped talking to it…
__
[O’Donnell’s] victory was only possible because, for the first time, political donors and activists from outside our little state picked a target, froze it, and polarized it. But the message I am getting tonight is clear — neither the state GOP nor the NRSC will spend any resources on O’Donnell. Mike Castle could win in Delaware, and she can’t. I’d amend that slightly: No one like O’Donnell, a pure ideological candidate, has won a statewide race in Delaware in modern times. Maybe she’ll be the first! But the most likely scenario is that a shocked Delaware electorate elevates Coons to the U.S. Senate while waiting to see if it can give Castle another crack at statewide office in 2012. It’s what we’re used to.

And just so we don’t become too fixated on the latest shiny political object, Alex Pareene at Salon reminds us about August’s Flavor-of-the-Month Repub Nutball: “Rand Paul doesn’t understand how budgets, the Senate, math work.”

Watching the International, which I had never heard of but am enjoying:

“The truth? There’s what people want to hear, there’s what people want to believe, there’s all the other bullshit in between, and then there’s the truth.”

That rang, umm, true.

Also, I can’t believe I’m the first to make the connection, but in honor of Christine O’Donnell’s victory tonight, I offer this:

Time for a googlebomb.
