Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Open Thread: Year of the (Golden) Tiger

by Anne Laurie|  February 14, 20101:51 am| 59 Comments

This post is in: Humorous, Open Threads

According to Chinese astrology, we are starting the Year of the Tiger, about which my very old Book of Chinese Chance paperback says:

“Tiger years are notoriously turbulent. Political unrest, coup d’etats, and catastrophes often strike during these action-packed years.
__
Prudence is advised in all new undertakings… The Tiger, though noble and honorable, endows his year with uncertainty and danger. Tigers never know where they might place their next paw. In Tiger years it is incumbent upon the rest of us to face head-on collisions with our own enemies. When we least expect that calamity, it surges out of nowhere. Much strength is required of us during these testy times.”

2010 is a Metal year, so this is the year of the Golden Tiger or the White Tiger, depending on which source you believe, but the white tiger is considered a bit of a jinx for reasons I haven’t been able to track.
__
However, every new year is the chance for a new start, and in that spirit I share my favorite of this year’s Chinese New Year Songs, because it embodies the ancient universal traditions of every extended family celebration… namely, bribing the kids to sit down and shut up until their elders can get sufficiently lubricated to stand being around each other. And then hoping the ensuing Carb Coma will keep actual fistfights from breaking out. Kampai!

Best Candle Ever

I know, an odd open thread, but it does fit the “c” rule (Laura W. can explain). At any rate, I bought the best smelling candle ever: Fresh Expressions Lavender. Smells so damned good.

And I am fully aware that this is going to spawn fifty comments questioning my masculinity, but I don’t care. They smell too good not to share.

Not to mention, I don’t want you to forget that there is a large, smelly, grumpy animal going to the bathroom in my house. Also, I have a cat.

The last thread is getting too long to load, and my google-fu is not strong enough to retrieve a useable clip of the Olympic opening ceremonies. (Although if anyone wants to point me in the right direction — my email is at the top right of this page.) So you get the all-purpose feel-good post featuring…

Here’s for some good news this weekend…

I’m already bored, but I stepped all over DougJ’s, so here is a shiny one for you.

BTW, Jmart tweeted a bit ago: “Anyone recall who actually was caught for setting off that bomb at 96 summer olympics?”

It is, of course, Eric Rudolph, as anyone who follows politics will remember, but I also remember it because by uncle, who has lived in Atlanta for 30+ years and was living there at the time, is also named Eric Rudolph.

Every time there is one of these mass murders or shootings, it is one of the first things I think about- what kind of shitty luck would you have to have to spend your entire life introducing yourself as “a different Ted Bundy” or “but not that Dylan Kliebold?”

Were you as shocked as I was when that guy from the Canadian curling team tested positive for steroids?

Update. Sorry — I didn’t realize that something awful involving an obscure sport really did happen today. It is very sad about the luge athlete.

How Do You Define Dork?

by John Cole|  February 12, 20105:50 pm| 51 Comments

I’m not sure why, but I find it pretty depressing that I’ve spent the last three weeks waiting to have sufficient range of motion in my right arm so I can… play Mass Effect 2. At any rate, if I loosen the brace a little I can use a mouse, so I am installing the game right now.

And to complete the effect, I have Chuck, Season 1, in the DVD player so I can “multitask.”

Stolen from The Poor Man, because it made me laugh:

There’s a Republican joke or several waiting to be written there…

Speaking of Republican jokes, the WaPo is eager to know more about Sen. Brown #2:

“Nationally, people are saying, who is Scott Brown? Is he an ideologue, an opportunist — in fact, the open-minded thinker he claims to be?” said Paul Watanabe, a political scientist at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. In Massachusetts, he added, “we have these same questions.”

Scotty was in the state senate for eleven years, and what his colleagues remember about him is “not much”. With his new national platform, he can play the white Justice Thomas, I guess.

And to continue my misuse of the Pathetic Fallacy, Sen. Brown #2 was in DC for Snowpocalypse #2, just as he was for Snowmaggedon last week. Here in Massachusetts, we got… a dusting. Except for the southeastern area of the state, closest to Brown’s home town (Wrentham), which picked up 5 – 10 inches of heavy wet snow they didn’t need either.
