Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

How stupid are these people?

Republicans do not pay their debts.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

In after Baud. Damn.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

“woke” is the new caravan.

We still have time to mess this up!

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Parcells Coming to Atlanta

by Michael D.|  December 19, 20072:51 pm| 35 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Sports

Not a big football fan myself, but this seems to be good news:

Bill Parcells said he’ll probably accept an offer from the Atlanta Falcons to become the National Football League team’s vice president of football operations, ESPN reported.

Parcells said he has no plans to return to coaching, the network reported on its Web site. He said he’d oversee rebuilding the football team, including hiring a coach to replace Bobby Petrino, who quit after 13 games. Parcells, who led the New York Giants to two Super Bowl championships, quit as coach of the Dallas Cowboys in January.

Again, not a fan (more of a hockey kinda guy) but I recognize the positive economic impact of a winning NFL franchise. Atlanta could certainly use all the help we can get. Can Parcells pull it off?

Holiday Travel Thread

Going to New York this weekend, so no blogging from me between Saturday and Tuesday. On Wednesday we start cooking the yearly bouchee a la reine and I brew an imperial stout.

About the trip, some radio show about food told me that Little Owl in the West Village definitely has the best dinners at a modest-scale restaurant in the entire Manhattan area. Obviously they’re right, and any NY area readers are welcome to agree completely in the comments.

Are you going somewhere cool? Acting as home base for the annual family reunion? Drinking heavily? Have at it.

Death Penalty News

New Jersey has banned the death penalty!

In signing the bill, Gov. Jon Corzine called it a “momentous day” and made the Garden State the first state to ban capital punishment since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated it in 1976.

Corzine on Sunday commuted the sentences of eight men sitting on the state’s death row. They will now serve life in prison without parole, according to the governor’s office.

“It’s a day of progress for the state of New Jersey and for the millions of people across our nation and around the globe who reject the death penalty as a moral or practical response to the grievous, even heinous, crime of murder,” Corzine said.

Wonderful news. Can’t wait to see the zealots on the Right (to life?) side react!

U.S. Reversal in Bali

by Michael D.|  December 15, 200712:10 pm| 24 Comments

A miracle:

The Bali meeting approved a “roadmap” for two years of talks to adopt a new treaty to succeed Kyoto beyond 2012, widening it to the United States and developing nations such as China and India. Under the deal, a successor pact will be agreed at a meeting in Copenhagen in late 2009.

The deal after two weeks of talks came when the United States dramatically dropped opposition to a proposal by the main developing-nation bloc, the G77, for rich nations to do more to help the developing world fight rising greenhouse emissions.

My feeling is that this comes as a result of one of two things:

1. Europe threatening to pull out of talks with the US on climate change
2. Somebody bound & gagged Bush in his office and told him to shut the fuck up

A Good Cause

There are thousands of readers here, so it is worth a shot. Can you help Michael?

**Update** Not that you need a holiday to do good for people, but I think this is a good time of year to get tested to see if you would be a suitable donor for someone who needs you. Michael is one case but, as you are aware, there are tens of thousands of Michaels. One of the coolest things I have ever done is to put myself on a bone marrow registry. I have a fairly rare blood type, and I figured it would be a great idea. No calls yet, but I’ll go wherever I need to go if that call comes. That would be the coolest gift I could ever give someone.

For your amusement, the best Huckabee campaign ad that doesn’t star Chuck Norris.
