From mensch commentor and cat-rescuer Marc:
Here is Miri and her five (5) little ones.
She started giving birth on Friday, just before noon, and the last one arrived a little after 10pm. Looks like she is a fine mother, even though this is her first and will be her only litter. I’m keeping an eye on mom and kitts, but so far everyone seems happy and healthy!
Just two months ago, Miri was a scruffy homeless teenager; just last month, Marc discovered he would be taking on a little more responsibility than he intended. Those babies are adorable, and I’m sure they’ll have no trouble finding new homes once they’re old enough. Can’t blame Miri for looking a little pleased with herself!

Update on Miri from commentor & cat-mensch Mark:
Took her in [Wednesday] for a check-up, and she is up to 11.62 lbs. The vet estimates kittens in about ten days to two weeks (so soon!). On the recommendation of the vet, I picked up kitten food to feed Miri for the remainder of her pregnancy. As you can see she was a very sweet girl while at the vet, and was complemented on her disposition by the vet and the vet tech – she is a real people oriented kitty!
And on the pitiable Mobile boxer Belle, from her rescuer Joy:
Just wanted to give you an update on Belle. She is thriving with her fosters. I believe she has found her forever home with them. She now weighs a healthy 55lbs and had her spay and leg tumor removed. She began heartworm treatment before her surgery but now is on doxycycline up until her next treatment in 3wks. She looks like a completely different dog with the TLC she has received.
Thanks for your support!

That’s two sweet companions whose current circumstances we can all be happy about!

From commentor and cat-rescuer Marc:
I renamed her ˜Miri” because ˜Strawberry Shortcake” didn’t seem to quite fit (although she is a very sweet kitty!). After a few days, I realized her soft meow sounded like she was saying ˜Miri”, so that is what I told the vet. I got her signed up with Banfield for kitten care plus, which will deal with her needs for the first year including spay. After declaring a her healthy, but a “little bit pregnant” 9.6 lb kitty, she was sent home with an appointment for the spay to be performed on July 12th.
On the day of the spay appointment, the vet who checked her out stated it would be risky to terminate her pregnancy this far along. She could direct me to another vet who might be willing to do it, but she was not comfortable at this point. I declined, brought Miri home, and she will have her kittens in about a month (or sooner).
Looking at the calendar, that puts the kittens arrival around the week of 9-15 August, with fostering out sometime late September or early October. I wasn’t planning to deal with kittens, but life (and Miri) had other plans. I just hope I don’t get attached to the whole bunch, and decide to keep them all. From a practical standpoint, I’d have to get a second job just to keep ’em in kitty litter…
I said I’d get Miri to become a lap kitty when she arrived at my condo. My bad. Miri does not want to sit on my lap while I’m on the computer – she has taken over the computer chair, and I’m now using my kneeling chair, while she lounges on the computer chair. Yeah, she rules me with an iron paw.
Cats were once worshiped as Gods, and I know my place.
PS: I’ve only used a little of the money donated – paid for her initial encounter with the vet. I’m covering the monthly bill for her Banfield kitten care plus program. If there are any additional expenses associated with her spay, I’ll use the funds for that, then send the remainder to a shelter or other place which help pets like Miri.
That would explain why Miri didn’t seem like a true feral — she wouldn’t be the first teenage cat who ran away from a perfectly good home when the hormones kicked in, and then couldn’t find her way back afterwards. But something tells me Marc will have some willing accomplices when it comes to finding the best homes for Miri’s kittens, later in the Fall.

Some good news to start the week, from commentor Dem Taterz:
I’m happy to report that I delivered Strawberry Shortcake to her forever home Sunday morning, and even happier to report that she was adopted by a fellow Balloon Juice reader – commenter Marc. Thanks to all of you, she’s gone from the Phoenix streets to a kitty-centric home with no less than four (!!) big cat trees and a new owner who’s vowed to train her to be a lap cat. If you’re wondering how she’s settling in, this picture should say it all.
I wish I had more to report about her health, but in predictable fashion, after showing up faithfully for breakfast for a month, she was a no-show yesterday until she’d missed her appointment with Arizona Animal Welfare League. Marc still agreed to take her as planned and to take over her care, so he will be providing updates from here. She’ll be getting checked up at Banfield on Wednesday and scheduled for spaying then.
“Yes, of course that’s MY mat. Why do you ask?”
Enjoying one of her MANY cat trees.
First of many brushings.
Update from commentor & new cat servant Marc:
Bedtime.

UPDATE from Joy:
Hello everyone! Thank you so much for your care and concern. This little old lady has captured my heart in a matter of days. Since getting a few good meals and water she has become more energetic and playful with my two mini schnauzers. I took her to the vet and the tumor is benign and the “least of our worries”. She who I now call “Belle” is heart worm positive. I have a temporary foster in line that will take her for a couple weeks until something more permanent becomes available. I only could afford the exam, heart worm test, flea treatment and intestinal de-wormer. Financial help is certainly needed to treat the heart worms. I know she would make a great pet and it breaks my heart that I’m not here long term to keep her. Thank you all in advance for you help!
I’ve written to Joy — what we’ve done before, with other rescue pets in need, is Joy can use her PayPal account (or set up a PayPal account) for donations to help Belle get healthy. Once she’s given me the okay, anybody who wants to chip in can email me, and I’ll forward your email to Joy “off the blog”. That way nobody has to put their address out “in public”. Will let everybody know as things develop…

From beloved commentor & dog-rescuer Satby:
Super Emergency pet bleg!
Joy is a friend of mine who works in NYC and was home for a week wrapping up her permanent move. She’s very anxious for this dog, she’s afraid that the SPCA or Animal Control in her area will just put the dog down without even checking on if the tumor is benign. She has to fly out in the afternoon tomorrow and called me as a last resort to see if I knew rescues in the Mobile AL area that might be willing to take this sweet girl. Appears to be a boxer mix.
I thought I’d ask the hive mind of Balloon-Juice for ideas or rescue leads in the area…
Hey Sharon! This is the sweet pup I called about. I came back from NJ to find her living underneath my utility shed. She was obviously dehydrated and starving to death. She has such a great demeanor and I know she would be a great pet and wonderful with other dogs. She has some sort of tumor hanging from her left leg. I’ve tried to reach agencies here in the area but they are all full. I feel awful having to leave and I would certainly keep her if I was living here full time. I hope you are able to help. Thanks!
Anybody have a lead for a rescue or shelter in the area that might have room for this poor girl?
Or a transport group that could take her from Mobile to an area where she might have a better chance at finding a permanent home?
Leave a comment below, or contact me directly (click on my name in the right-hand column or annelaurie at verizon dot net) and I’ll put you in touch with Joy.
If funds are needed for transport / care / medical issues, I’m sure we can chip in to help…
