John Oliver is a genius.
I love the DC statehood song at the end (sorry, Betty).

It’s super-flooded in my neck of the woods. Here’s an ramp off I-275 in Tampa, which now exits into a freakin’ lake:
[Photo courtesy Bay News 9]In my little town, the ditches, culverts and gutters are full, yards are soggy and some streets are flooded, but it’s way worse in other places. We’ll see what happens at high tide later today.
Thankfully, the rain appears to be tapering off. Open thread!

Doing my part to keep Thor in Thursday: FYWP is particularly squirrelly in the back room tonight, which may be discouraging others from posting. Hopefully it’s not eating your wise and beautiful contributions.
It’s raining as usual. The mister is making a pizza, so I’ve got that going for me. What are you up to?

This is nuts:
A woman in Charleston, W.Va., may have saved her own life and the lives of many other women, as well, when she shot and killed an alleged attacker in her home last week.
Neal Falls showed up at the woman’s home on July 18 after answering an escort ad she had placed on Backpage.com, according to police. He showed up with a “kill list,” multiple pairs of handcuffs and a Subaru full of weapons and tools, including a shovel, knives, a bulletproof vest, a machete, bleach, trash bags, sledgehammers and axes, according to Fox affiliate KPTV.
In Falls’s pocket, police said, was a list of names of potential future victims, all of whom are sex workers who advertised on Backpage, according to the Daily Dot.
Now investigators are trying to determine whether Falls, 45, was responsible for a string of slayings targeting sex workers in Ohio and Nevada, the station reported.
Wow.

I mentioned a while back that one of my dogs had become fat and lethargic, so I took her to the vet. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism hypothyroidism, and the vet prescribed a twice-daily pill.
It’s working — she has more energy and has already lost about seven pounds. I also got to witness Pavlovian principles first hand: I set an alarm on my phone to remind me to administer a pill at 8 AM and 8 PM daily. I chose a barking dog ringtone for the alarm.
I hide the pills in cheese, and because I have two dogs, both get a piece of cheese when it’s time to administer a dose because otherwise it would be NO FAIR. Now when the alarm goes off, both dogs drool and stare “time for the cheese, damn it!” at me.
So, I can make dogs drool and stare with my phone. What’s your super power today?

Old Blue, our faithful and reliable 2002 subcompact, just got home from the garage. To get her to pass inspection would require us to spend 80% of her blue book value on repairs. We are thinking that is time that she go to either the junkyard in the sky to play with all the other cars or up on Craig’s List to give a teenager a great first car story of woe and ingenious fixes.
I have driven a Kia Soul and a Chevy Cruze recently as rentals. I liked both although the Soul was a touch big for what I need a car for. What has everyone heard/experienced with the compact and subcompact market?
I just plan to use this car as my mobile locker room during the soccer season and dropping my daughter off at swimming for the rest of the year. As long as it can go up a hill, I don’t care about performance. My priorities are affordability and reliability for seven years.

For those of you who care. Other than a couple of AMA’s, I basically look at Reddit as 4chan in dress clothes.
