Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Accountability, motherfuckers.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

We will not go back.

This Will Be Interesting

by John Cole|  February 22, 20086:26 pm| 57 Comments

This post is in: War on Terror aka GSAVE®

Via TPM, this news:

Air Force Col. Morris Davis, who resigned in October over alleged political interference in the U.S. military tribunals, told The Associated Press he will appear at a hearing for Salim Ahmed Hamdan.

“I expect to be called as a witness … I’m more than happy to testify,” Davis said in a telephone interview from Washington. He called it “an opportunity to tell the truth.”

At the April pretrial hearing inside the U.S. military base in southeast Cuba, Hamdan’s defense team plans to argue that alleged political interference cited by Davis violates the Military Commissions Act, Hamdan’s military lawyer, Navy Lt. Brian Mizer, told the AP.

Davis alleges, among other things, that Pentagon general counsel William Haynes said in August 2005 that any acquittals of terrorism suspects at Guantanamo would make the United States look bad, calling into question the fairness of the proceedings.

“He said ‘We can’t have acquittals, we’ve got to have convictions,'” Davis recalled.

Col. Davis better cover his countertops.

Wingnuts- Target Rich Environment Tom Coburn, Objectively Pro-Saddam

This post is in: Politics, Republican Stupidity

Another traitor:

During a town hall meeting in Muskogee, Oklahoma this past weekend, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) admitted that it was “a mistake” for the United States to invade Iraq in 2003. “I will tell you personally that I think it was probably a mistake going to Iraq,” Coburn told the crowd.

No screaming eagle shit, Sen. Coburn.

Here We Go Again

This post is in: Election 2008, Military, Assholes, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing, I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

Apparently the keyboard commandos got their panties all in a knot over this anecdote from Obama last night:

You know, I’ve heard from an Army captain who was the head of a rifle platoon — supposed to have 39 men in a rifle platoon,” he said. “Ended up being sent to Afghanistan with 24 because 15 of those soldiers had been sent to Iraq. And as a consequence, they didn’t have enough ammunition, they didn’t have enough humvees. They were actually capturing Taliban weapons, because it was easier to get Taliban weapons than it was for them to get properly equipped by our current commander in chief.

Now in the right-wing wankosphere, where they pride themselves in all things military, this was perceived as a grave insult to the flightsuit-in-chief, and much anger was displayed. If you want to read the morons, you can check out the links at Big Media Matt’s, who also directs us to this Jake Tapper piece over at ABC:

I called the Obama campaign this morning to chat about this story, and was put in touch with the Army captain in question.

He told me his story, which I found quite credible, though for obvious reasons he asked that I not mention his name or certain identifying information.

Short answer: He backs up Obama’s story.

The longer answer is worth telling, though.

The Army captain, a West Point graduate, did a tour in a hot area of eastern Afghanistan from the Summer of 2003 through Spring 2004.

As a wise man once said, “Ruh Roh.” We know what happens when the wingnut narrative is in danger. At any rate, Tapper ends with this advice:

I find that Obama’s anecdote checks out.

Some are quibbling about whether or not the “commander in chief” can be held responsible for how well our soldiers are being equipped, since Congress provides the funding for the military, but the Pentagon (and ultimately President Bush) are in charge of the funding mechanism.

I might suggest those on the blogosphere upset about this story would be better suited directing their ire at those responsible for this problem, which is certainly not new. That is, if they actually care about the men and women bravely serving our country at home and abroad.

Like hell! What really needs to be done is to find out who this traitorous Captain is, and then we need to examine his counter tops and let the Confederate Yankee run a 50 part investigation into his MySpace account.

Seriously, is there a more useless bunch of douchebags than these right-wing hacks?

*** Update ***

More confirmation here, from Phil Carter:

I talked this morning with two friends who led rifle platoons in Afghanistan. Both confirmed to me that they did, at times, use captured or found weapons or ammunition. One relayed the story of mounting a Soviet 12.7mm heavy machine gun (the equivalent of a U.S. .50 caliber machine gun) on his HMMWV because it was too difficult to get the spare parts needed to fix their G.I. (government issue) .50 cal. Another told me his platoon carried AKs anytime they patrolled with their Afghan counterparts, and that it was always much easier to get 7.62mm ammo for the AKs than to go through the U.S. bureaucracy for ammunition requisition. These stories are timeless; you’ll see similar ones in the narratives from WWII, Korea and Vietnam vets too. Anyone who’s dealt with the Army supply system – particularly at the pointy end of the spear – ought to be able to sympathize.

***

In light of my experience in Iraq, Sen. Obama’s comments last night are eminently believable. Sen. Obama is also absolutely right to use this anecdote as a critique of the administration’s decision to go to war in Iraq. It is incontrovertible that the war in Iraq diverted scarce military resources (manpower, equipment, etc.) from Afghanistan to Iraq. The cost for that diversion was paid by America’s sons and daughters, and our Afghan brethren, who continue to fight in Afghanistan against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. We owe our troops better.

Now granted, Phil Carter has some military knowledge, so I would take this a grain of salt when you compare it to the vault of information these bloggers have procured over a lifetime of arranging GI Joe dolls while watching betamax copies of Uncommon Valor in the basement apartment they rent from their parents. I know it is a tough call, but I am gonna go with Obama, Tapper, and Phil Carter on this.

*** Update #2 ***

Surprisingly enough, the biggest moron in this whole affair is not Bryan Preston or Uncle Jimbo, but instead junior-grade wingnut Amy Proctor (or should I call her a wingnette?). Enjoy:

THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS WE NEED TO BE ASKING:

1) Why did Barack Obama say he “heard from an Army captain who was the head of a rifle platoon” when the captain was actually a Lieutenant at the time, the equivalent of a PRIVATE?

2) Why did Barack Obama pass this account off as CURRENT when it took place in 2003, FIVE YEARS AGO?

3) Why is the LT/CPT’s story not corroborated by any military source and why is his identity being shielded by ABC and Barack Obama?

4) Why did this Army LT/CPT contact an anti-war candidate, ask for anonymity and recount a story FIVE YEARS OLD?

Of course we know the answer to all these questions. The intent was to make it appear that TODAY the Bush Administration is sending our troops (WHO KEEP VOLUNTEERING FOR DUTY, BY THE WAY) into combat unprepared and unequipped, which is NOT true.

Sweet jumping jeebus that woman is stupid.

Seriously, with friends like these, you can get away with a lot of stuff:

Chris Matthews: But first the McCain story. We‘re joined by NBC‘s David Gregory and Andrea Mitchell. Anyone who covers politics is saddened by this story.

***

MIKE BARNICLE, NBC ANALYST: Well, God—God, I hate this story, Chris. I hate it for what it does….

MATTHEWS: I hate it, too.

BARNICLE: I hate for the process—what it does to the process of politics. I hate it for what it does to the process of journalism.

There were at least two other occasions last night in which Matthews professed that the story about McCain was “depressing,” but I can’t find them. They were as he was cutting to commercial break, so maybe it was chopped. Or maybe I am misremembering.

At any rate, people have talked at length about how Hillary has to play under the “Clinton rules,” and that Obama has not. We will see what impact the McCain rules also have this election cycle.

This post is in: I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

Then, the son of a communist couple, and now, today, we learn that Obama is a 60’s radical at heart:

In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district’s influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

While Ayers and Dohrn may be thought of in Hyde Park as local activists, they’re better known nationally as two of the most notorious – and unrepentant — figures from the violent fringe of the 1960s anti-war movement.

Now, as Obama runs for president, what two guests recall as an unremarkable gathering on the road to a minor elected office stands as a symbol of how swiftly he has risen from the Hyde Park left to a man closing in fast on the Democratic nomination for president.

Captain Ed, with his daily (hourly?) hackdom:

Which brings us to the visit of Barack Obama and the apparent blessing he received from Ayers and Dohrn. This doesn’t mean that Obama professes the same support for political violence as the Weather couple, but it does show a lack of backbone in rejecting those that do. If Obama can’t stand up to two discredited American terrorists in Chicago … well, you get the drift. What does it say about Obama’s politics that Ayers and Dohrn approved of him, and what does it say about Obama that he felt he needed their blessing?

It says that you are an idiot for trying to make a big deal out of this.

Is it November yet?

The McCain Story

A pretty reasoned response to the McCain NY Times story:

I chose not to run the New York Times story on John McCain in Thursday’s P-I, even though it was available to us on the New York Times News Service. I thought I’d take a shot at explaining why

***

Admitting that Keller was in a better position to vet the sourcing and facts than I am as, basically, a reader, let’s assume that every source is solid and every fact attributed in the story to an anonymous source is true. You’re still dealing with a possible appearance of impropriety, eight years ago, that is certainly unproven and probably unprovable. Where is the solid evidence of this lobbyist improperly influencing (or bedding) McCain? I didn’t see it in the half-dozen times I read the story. In paragraphs fifty-eight through sixty-one of the sixty-five-paragraph story, the Times points out two matters in which McCain took actions favorable to the lobbyist’s clients — that were also clearly consistent with his previously stated positions.

That’s pretty thin beer.

***

This story seems to me not to pass the smell test. It makes the innuendo of impropriety, even corruption, without backing it up. I was taught that before you run something in the newspaper that could ruin somebody’s reputation, you’d better have your facts very straight indeed.

I tend to agree with his reason to not run the story in the Seattle PI- were I Bill Keller, I would not have run it. Maybe some evidence will appear in the following weeks that backs up all the claims in the original piece. I don’t know, but right now this looks like a pretty clear case of shoddy journalism.

Thank Goodness The Adults Are In Charge

This post is in: Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

Another day, another indictment:

Rep. Rick Renzi was indicted Friday on multiple federal charges, law enforcement sources tell CNN.
art.renzi.afp.gi.jpg

Rep. Rick Renzi speaks during a press conference in Baghdad, Iraq, in April 2007.

In a 35-count indictment handed up by a grand jury in Arizona, Renzi is charged with conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering extortion and insurance fraud.

The indictment stem from Renzi’s efforts to use his position in Congress to promote land deals in Arizona by a former business partner, according to the sources.

The Arizona Republican has been under an ethical cloud ever since a family business was raided earlier this year by the FBI, which is investigating whether he used his federal office for personal gain.

Insert your own snark. Will the morons in AZ send another Republican in his place?
