Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

How stupid are these people?

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

A Banner Year for Wanking

by John Cole|  December 27, 20089:12 am| 74 Comments

This post is in: Military, Politics, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing

The Poorman has his end of the year awards up for you to vote on, but I might suggest that there needs to be a late entry to the Soggy Biscuit Category. Apparently, Obama visited the troops in Hawaii, and due to one sentence in the ABC write-up, our brave keyboard commandos have concluded that the troops hate them some defeatocrat. Uncle Dimbo, lead torture fetishist at BlackFive:

It should surprise no one familiar with the military that Obama got a respectful but unenthusiastic response when he dropped in at a meal.

***

Well he certainly wasn’t among friends at the chow hall.

Josh Painter at Red State builds on the wank:

The obvious contrast in the responses which President Bush and the president-elect evoke from military personnel should be obvious, but if Obama’s supporters need a clue, milblog Blackfive was more than willing to provide one:

Actually, I got your contrast right here:

Four long years of this made up bullshit, and we can thank ABC’s political punch for tossing the wankosphere an assist. Actual journalists covered the story a little differently:

Reporters were only allowed inside the mess hall for seven of the 68 minutes Obama spent greeting diners there. During that time they were clustered at a distance from the president-elect and could only hear bits and pieces of the conversations he was having at the tables.

But the service men and women seemed to enjoy having Obama crash their Christmas dinner – even though he didn’t eat.

Some seemed to be sending text messages from their cell phones when it became clear Obama was about to enter the room. They rose to their feet when Obama approached their tables and extended his hand.

“Congratulations,” one of the service members said as Obama greeted his table.

Like I said. This is going to be a long four years of this bullshit, and we can expect nonsense like this daily from the 101st Chairborne.

*** Update ***

Commenters reminded me of this video of the troops shunning the defeatocrat Obama:

This is what I hate about blogging. The premise that the troops hate Obama is so stupid that it is laughable, but you have to push back. Yet, the moment you push back, you are now engaging the idiots like Red State and Uncle Jimbo as if they have something legitimate to say. Really, the only response is to just mock these morons.

The puppies are cuter in person:

Also, a reader sent this in, which seemed to fit the Holiday moment:

Maybe I will have something to say later on, but for now, this is it. Surprisingly enough, Tunch seems to have behaved while I was gone.

The greatest Christmas song ever:

Not sure how many of you watch a Christmas Story every year, but I always catch it every year. This year, my sister gave me this as a gag gift.

The standing rib is in the oven, and the smell is killing me.

Screwged

This post is in: Republican Stupidity, Assholes, Clown Shoes, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

I have to admit- only the Bush administration can raise incompetence to an art form:

President Bush changed his mind on Christmas Eve, pulling back a pardon he had extended a day earlier to a Brooklyn developer at the center of a Long Island real estate fraud case and adding a bizarre twist to the episode.

The developer, Isaac R. Toussie, who was listed Tuesday as one of the beneficiaries of the president’s constitutional power to wipe away a criminal record, is not being pardoned “based on information that has subsequently come to light,” the White House said late Wednesday afternoon.

During the middle of an economic disaster brought on in many ways due to fraud and greed involving real estate and home loans, it takes talent to make me sympathetic towards someone who engaged in the fraud, but Bush is just the kind of lout to pull it off. There is just something wrong about pardoning someone and then unpardoning them.

I really don’t think there was ever any excuse to pardon this guy, and he certainly does not deserve one, but to tell them they are pardoned and then yank it out from under them just seems to be wrong. Reminds me of the Sarah Jane Olson nonsense earlier this year. They made the mistake, not her. She should have just remained free.

Oh, well. Leave it to Bush to ruin both the holiday spirit and the notion of the unquestioned pardon power. What a damned moron. There really isn’t anything this man can not screw up, and it really clarifies how he almost choked to death on a pretzel.

Made it home in one piece, and the puppies are so adorable that you just want to lie on the floor and roll around with them. Ginny is really quite the card, and is simply fearless. Lots of pics when I get home and have my editing software handy.

Some random thoughts:

1.) I ate a handful of pine nuts sitting in the kitchen. Is it just me, or do pine nuts have a distinctly bacon-like flavor?

2.) Speaking of nuts, at some point we were talking about crazy people who walk up and down city streets talking to themselves. Not sure what brought this up, but my brother noted that if we gave all those folks a blue tooth to wear, we would probably think there are far fewer crazy people on our streets.

3.) This is some classic Yglesias-speak:

My half-formed ability to make aesthetic judgments is telling me that this song has certain qualities that most people actually hate, but that I like.

That is Matt speak for “this sucks, but I like it anyway.”

4.) You were right. Season 2 of Heroes is ten pounds of suck in a five pound bag.

5.) Looks like Al Franken is good enough and smart enough to be a Senator.

Cya in the morning. And Merry Christmas!

Compare and Contrast

This post is in: Media, General Stupidity

Matt Taibbi, a few years ago, discussing Tom Friedman’s The World is Flat:

This would be a small thing were it not for the overall pattern. Thomas Friedman does not get these things right even by accident. It’s not that he occasionally screws up and fails to make his metaphors and images agree. It’s that he always screws it up. He has an anti-ear, and it’s absolutely infallible; he is a Joyce or a Flaubert in reverse, incapable of rendering even the smallest details without genius. The difference between Friedman and an ordinary bad writer is that an ordinary bad writer will, say, call some businessman a shark and have him say some tired, uninspired piece of dialogue: Friedman will have him spout it. And that’s guaranteed, every single time. He never misses.

On an ideological level, Friedman’s new book is the worst, most boring kind of middlebrow horseshit. If its literary peculiarities could somehow be removed from the equation, The World Is Flat would appear as no more than an unusually long pamphlet replete with the kind of plug-filled, free-trader leg-humping that passes for thought in this country. It is a tale of a man who walks 10 feet in front of his house armed with a late-model Blackberry and comes back home five minutes later to gush to his wife that hospitals now use the internet to outsource the reading of CAT scans. Man flies on planes, observes the wonders of capitalism, says we’re not in Kansas anymore. (He actually says we’re not in Kansas anymore.) That’s the whole plot right there. If the underlying message is all that interests you, read no further, because that’s all there is.

And the opening paragraphs of Friedman’s column today:

I had a bad day last Friday, but it was an all-too-typical day for America.

It actually started well, on Kau Sai Chau, an island off Hong Kong, where I stood on a rocky hilltop overlooking the South China Sea and talked to my wife back in Maryland, static-free, using a friend’s Chinese cellphone. A few hours later, I took off from Hong Kong’s ultramodern airport after riding out there from downtown on a sleek high-speed train — with wireless connectivity that was so good I was able to surf the Web the whole way on my laptop.

Taibbi 1, Friedman 0.

Discuss.
