Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Stand up, dammit!

The lights are all blinking red.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

We still have time to mess this up!

An almost top 10,000 blog!

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

In my day, never was longer.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Consistently wrong since 2002

“But what about the lurkers?”

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

More calendar pics. From commentor Teemu (Turku, Finland):

These two Sphynx brothers, Bounty and Boss, belong to my wife. She first got the Bounty (the fat pink one) six years ago, when he was just a tiny little kitten. Boss (grey-pink) came a couple of years later, and me soon thereafter. I’ve always wanted a cat, but I’ve always been severely allergic to them. These, to my surprise, did not cause me any trouble.
__
Bounty has been in love with my wife for all of his life, so it was only natural that Boss adopted me when I came along. Every evening, when I return from work, he’s waiting by the door to welcome me home, and rest of the evening he follows me around like a shadow, meowing and purring and jumping on my shoulder from shelftop or back of a chair (usually 5-10 times a day). When I cook, he’s often sitting on my shoulder like a parrot. What I sit down, he’s always curled on my lap and purring in under ten seconds.
__
I found out a few months ago that Boss has a heart defect, and I’m waiting for heart attack or similar to come in a matter of few weeks, or few months max. So here’s my dream cat I’ve been asking for for 30 years, who loves me so much, and my heart is breaking every night when I’m giving him his meds. I can feel and hear his little heart racing when he’s on my shoulder, and there’s nothing I can do, except feeding him more fresh liver and pork’s heart and shrimps, and otherwise making sure he enjoys every last moment he has to the fullest.
__
(I think Bounty is a bit more picturesque in most photos due to his excellent eating-related skillset… Also, feel free to correct any ridiculous grammar mistakes, I’m not an english speaker really.)

A chunkier president Obama

This post is in: Election 2012

Ross Douthat hits Gingrich with his best shot. Summary: Newt Gingrich is just like Obama, a brilliant professor-type blah blah blah.

I don’t want to do these idiots’ job for them, but they’re not going at this the right way.

Anywho, Newt’s agression will not stand. Don’t be surprised if Chunky Bobo becomes Bayh-curious.

The Professor teaches history as fantasy…

The Professor likes to cast himself as a “Historian”. When you listen to his views on the events of the past and their meanings it becomes quite clear that his idea of history is as a tool for telling stories that support his political goals, please his patrons and line his pockets. For Newt, History is just a grift.

Now there are plenty who agree with the notion that all history is political and represents a narrative of the powerful and that these narratives are used to keep the masses in line. There is some truth to the notion that history is propaganda for the elites, but that is not always the case. Real Historians–unlike Newt–review original sources and competing narratives to try and find facts and any truth that can be verified and proven by the record. This process is informed by every generation and their issues of the day, but over time the truth ekes out. The last sixty years have been a Golden Age of History where more and more facts, sources and source narratives have come to the surface for review and consideration. Certain things can be called Historical Facts. It is the very idea that there are Historical Facts that The Professor works to oppose and undermine. In their place he wishes a return to the days of a Century ago when all History was controlled by the propagandists of the British Empire and the Lost Cause disciples of America. The common thread in both narratives was White Male greatness and the weakness of all other races and cultures.

And this brings us to Newt’s line that Palestinians are an “invented” people. It is predictable that Newt would say this, but not because of his understanding of the Middle East or any aspect of the I/P conflict. That stuff really does not matter to The Professor. Rather, he sees Israel as an outpost of White Male European Civilization and in Newt’s view of history that makes Israel part of the proof of the white supremacy narrative.

Now we could, at this point, spend time to point out how factually challenged The Professor is about Middle East History, the Palestinian People and history in general. We could point to the maps and documents used by White Males over the centuries as they refer to the land in question as “Palestine” (and these white guys never called it “Israel” on a map until some time after 1948). We might point out that even before there was an Ottoman Empire there were original maps and documents calling the place Palestine. You could point out that for most of that time Jews and Palestinians lived in peaceful coexistence on the land in question. You could even mention that it was Newt’s romanticized British Empire that laid the groundwork for today’s conflict in a cynical colonialist exercise designed to divide the region and steal its resources. One could spend time pointing out these and other historical facts, but it would not matter to The Professor or Wingnutopia. For them, the myth of the superior White Male Civilization is the root narrative that they want to believe and Israel’s only functions is to serve as a data point in support of that fable.

It is all a dog whistle. The Professor says similar outrageous things about non-white peoples all the time. He belittles their legitimacy and their ability–or even their right–to be part of the History of Civilization. When Newt discusses non-White people and cultures he likes to place thier impact on History in the context of Colonialism and White Male Civilization. A major plank in Newt’s critique of Barack Obama is his non-Whiteness. Newt’s claim about the “invented” Palestinian people is a way to reinforce that dog whistle. The Professor likes to suggest that Barack Obama is also “invented” by the same multi-cultural forces that hold White Male Civilization under siege. This is a major meme of Wingnutopia and very close to the core of their hatred of the President. And every Republican running for the White House (and most other offices as well) is compelled to embrace some aspect of the “invented”-Obama-as-a-sign-that-White-Civilization-is-under-siege meme. Their trouble is that Newt is just better at this racist dog whistle shit than all of them put together.

The Professor is on the move. He will be the Republican nominee and he will cast the 2012 Election as a battle to save White Male Civilization from Obama’s multi-cultural hordes. He will cast it an epic battle. And there will be some truth to that as many will march to the tune of his dog whistles to fight for a racist historical fantasy over reality.

I hope that Newt and his world view are completely crushed. It is long past time for his cherished narrative of White Male Supremacy to be cast onto the ash pile of failed ideas. And I’ll work like hell to ensure that outcome.

Cheers

ps: the above map is from an old world atlas, circa 1865.

I don’t see any method at all

by DougJ|  December 11, 20117:25 pm| 110 Comments

I’m sure someone wiser than me has already said this, but…the Republican debates have been a huge disaster. At best, they’ll end up with a nominee (Romney) who has been (more or less) forced to take positions on immigration that will hurt him in the general election; at worst, they’ll have a Goldwater-like sacrificial lamb.

How did this happen? Did party elders look at the the endless series of Obama-Hilary debates, come to the conclusion that those had helped the Democratic party (I think they did too), and decide to try having their own series? Was it beyond their control?

I read a lot about how Roger Ailes would step in and make sure the primary went well, that it wouldn’t turn into a clown show, that he’d make sure an electable candidate got through. But then Bret Baier (to his credit) got all serious journalist with Romney.

Republicans may still win next November. I’m not making any predictions. But clearly they’ve shit the bed, thus far. Wha’ happen?

Rescue Bleg (Charlie’s Angels)

by Anne Laurie|  December 11, 20115:51 pm| 59 Comments

This post is in: Dog Blogging, Pet Rescue

Evelyn of Charlie’s Angels forwards a plea:

TIFFANY: Oh my, where should I begin. I guess the part where my other family took me to the cemetary and left me to starve. I’m a good girl, honest. But I have this deformity of my left front leg, requiring Angular Limb Deformity Correction Surgery so that I can lead a normal life and not be in pain. I’m sweet as sugar and a brave little soul. But there were lots of strange critters wandering around that cemetary and I was so scared. But then these nice folks (Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue) found me wandering and took me to the doctor and he said I’m healthy; they gave me shots and even spayed me. Now I’m all better from that but I need this operation to fix my leg so I can run and play and get to do all the things I’ve missed out on.
__
I’m not even a year old yet–and I only weigh 5.2 lbs. I really want my leg fixed–I want to be able to chase leaves and bugs and even cuddle with my foster mom and not have to wiggle to get my leg in just the right position so it doesn’t hurt.
__
Will you help? You see, the corrective surgery I need will be approximately $2,500 with a “rescue” discount. I put weight on my leg, but not for any length of time and its not a normal gait when I walk. I just have to stop and it feels bad so I hold my paw up to make it quit hurting.
__
A note from Linda: Tiffany deserves the chance to be a carefree pup–something that obviously she hasn’t experienced yet. SCRATCH wants to afford her that opportunity but we need your help. Your donation will get us closer to having the funds to schedule Tiffany’s surgery so that she, too, can run and play and find a loving home where she can learn to trust and be loved.

Loving This Train Wreck

This post is in: Election 2012, Gay Rights are Human Rights, Republican Stupidity

Have any of you been following the wreckage from the Perry Campaign’s “Strong” ad?

Apparently, the vulgar gay-bashing was too much for even the stooges at GOProud, who’ve shown themselves quite content over the years to take whatever gay-baiting and homophobia the Republicans have to offer because of their love for supply-side Jeebus. This time, however, it was too much, and they went ballistic:

Two gay conservative leaders have blasted Texas governor Rick Perry’s antigay presidential campaign ad while also using a gay slur to out Perry strategist Tony Fabrizio.

Following the release of Perry’s ad condemning the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” and calling for more religion in schools, GOProud cofounder Jimmy LaSalvia wrote on Twitter Wednesday, “I’ve just about had it with faggots who line their pockets with checks from antigay homophobes while throwing the rest of us under the bus.” He later added that he was talking about a Perry strategist. His colleague Christopher Barron later clarified that they are taking issue with Fabrizio of Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates, who has a solid history of working for top-tier Republican politicians, as reported in Back2Stonewall. LaSalvia added, “So Rick Perry thinks that the service of tens of thousands of patriotic Americans is what’s wrong. No Governor, it’s you that’s wrong.”

I have no idea what set them off about this Perry ad, because it really is pretty much exactly the same thing the Republicans have been saying for years, and they never flinched. Maybe Perry shouldn’t have recorded the ad in German. At any rate, just to give you an idea of what kind of clowns are in GOProud, the reaction of their leaders to the ad caused this to happen next:

Conservative website mogul Andrew Breitbart has quit the advisory board for GOProud, saying he has a “zero tolerance” policy for outing people.

Trouble started when GOProud’s Jimmy LaSalvia and Chris Barron reacted to an antigay Rick Perry television ad by angrily taking to Twitter, attacking pollster Tony Fabrizio.

“I’ve just about had it with faggots who line their pockets with checks from antigay homophobes while throwing the rest of us under the bus,” LaSalvia wrote.

GOProud issued a statement defending itself from the ensuing backlash, but that apparently only contributed to Breitbart’s disappointment.

“I have a zero tolerance attitude toward the intentional infliction of vocational and family harm by divulging the details of an individual’s sexual orientation as a weapon of political destruction,” Breitbart wrote on one of his websites, BigGovernment.com. Breitbart said he’d long ago told LaSalvia and Barron about his opinion on outing, which Breitbart said contributed to his “evolution from the political left to the right.”

Now why, you might ask, was Breitbart on the advisory board when he himself has a history of promoting anti-gay rhetoric? Beats me, but you’ll have to ask the clowns at GOProud. I’m too busy laughing at the carnage Perry has created.
