Another day, another embarrassing act by someone from my home state (Like BettyC, I’m a native. We’re on 6 hour shifts!).
TAMPA (FOX 13) – Two men, one wearing a tutu, broke into Tampa Farmer’s Market to eat fruit and drink soda early Tuesday morning.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released surveillance footage of the suspects breaking into the Fletcher Avenue store in hopes that the public can help identify them.
According to HCSO, the suspects gained access to the store by breaking out the glass door at approximately 1 a.m. on November 1, and proceeded to consume fruit and soda once inside.
A sheriff’s office spokesperson shared the following descriptions of the two suspects:
#1 – white male, thin build, possibly dressed in a cheerleading costume, wearing a TuTu, possibly wearing a wig.
#2- male (unknown race), wearing a hoodie with an image of an owl on the front.
Anyone with any information reference these suspects is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at 247-8200 or anyone with any information regarding the identity and whereabouts of these suspects and who wants to be eligible for a cash reward is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).

Allow me to regale you with more tales of the nightlife of Tampa!
TAMPA (FOX 13) – Newly released surveillance video could help Tampa Police locate the man who drove his car onto a sidewalk in Ybor City, hitting two people and a bar early Tuesday morning.
Around 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, after businesses had closed, a group of men began fighting outside the Bad Monkey Bar on East 7th Avenue in Tampa.
Surveillance cameras captured the brawl, including one subject involved in the fighting who attempted to leave the scene by driving away in a black Nissan.
“He tries to do a U-turn, and it’s really too tight of a street to do that. He gets hung up on the curb,” said Steve Hegarty, spokesperson for the Tampa Police Department.
The driver jumped the sidewalk and crashed into several men who were still fighting. One of the men was pushed through the window of the Bad Monkey bar when the car made impact, smashing the glass.
After crashing through the building, the driver left the scene.Detectives are working to determine if the driver intentionally accelerated his car or if the crash was accidental.
“That’s a big question that we have right now. At the very least, it’s a hit and run. There was damage to the building, clearly, someone was injured and he left the scene,” said Hegarty.
Only one of the men on the sidewalk, Michael Silhol, 25, was hurt in the crash. Silhol suffered a minor leg and head injury.
The Bad Monkey bar was left with $15,000 worth of damage. It was closed at the time of the crash.

@SiubhanDuinne: Yes, yes it does. Though there wasn’t a farmers’ market there when I was growing up.
SiubhanDuinne
No, there wasn’t. I lived in an apartment just off 56th St, not far from Fowler. I’m not sure they even had farmers’ markets back then.
Adam L Silverman
@SiubhanDuinne: My folks lived in an apartment near there in Temple Terrace until I was 1, then we moved to Davis Islands. We might have been neighbors. I was the newborn with the full head of black curls that looked Chinese or Mongolian (and we’re still trying to figure this one out, but every time I’m in Chinatown in NY someone asks me where in China or Mongolia my family is from).

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Have some kittehs from last Sunday.
Run, Lillian!
Happy Thanksgiving, Juicers! Even though I mostly lurk, I am grateful for you all. The past two weeks have been a waking nightmare and reading the front pagers and the commenters here have helped me get through it. We are really going to have to pace ourselves for the next 4 years! Have a great holiday weekend, may it be more healing than stressful. And for those that need a break there are some great movies out right now- I am going to see Moonlight when the feeding is done.

Wasn’t there a woman in Florida who shooed her guests out at gunpoint? Perhaps with shots fired? It’s the kind of thing I could easily imagine after seeing a headline out of the corner of my eye, but it’s Florida, so it totally could have happened.
If it did, Mrs. Cracker may already have written about it. If that’s the case, I apologize for the repetitive inquiry.

Is this one of those “Forget it, Jake, it’s Florida” kind of things?

@Adam L Silverman: Clearly your family is from the Borscht Belt region of Mongolia. Encouraged them to leave with shots fired, of course. Whether she shod them first (or even had a farrier in house) is unknown. Of course I’m not even certain it actually happened, but it totally could have in Florida. I inquire, you report; so jump off that building, you’re the goddamn Batman.

@Peale: Most likely no. The Federal Courts look unkindly on this sort of thing, including the state law that would be manipulated to have the legislature award McCrory a second term and preclude any state court, at any level, from reviewing this action.

Just returned from the grocery run on which I prove to myself every year that I live in the best neighborhood. Store is all full of every kind of American you can think of. Interestingly, I haven’t seen the folks at the gun blogs try to debunk this one, which is SOP with them. They have a guy with a bachelors in stats that takes every study out and shreds it because the methodology is wrong. As someone who has taught both undergrad and grad level stats, as well as research design and methodology, a bachelors in stats, no matter how good you are, is not good enough to debunk design and operation methods in published research just because you don’t like the conclusions.

There you go again using ‘logic’ and elite reasoning. The facts don’t matter to these people, and they’ve managed to convince the media that people who point out that they are full of shit are being ‘smug’ and are ‘sneering’ at ‘real America’. I suspect they haven’t gotten around to debunking this because they feel secure in the knowledge that stand your ground is in do danger of being repealed in Florida any time soon. If and when they feel threatened, the howling monkeys will come out full force.
ETA: They will so too convert you posthumously, by the time we are all dead, the LDS church will have a membership in the billions. Deal with it, we will all be Mormons.

@Schlemazel: There’s long been a story (myth? folklore?) among some Koreans that there were a group of Jews there from antiquity. This wouldn’t surprise me as we know Jews went east into India and China for trade in antiquity and were very successful in terms of societal integration. In the case of China so successful that they assimilated themselves into oblivion. And if I’m remembering correctly, one of the oldest extant pieces of writing found was found in a cave above the Gobi Dessert. Its an ancient Chinese dialect written in paleo-Hebrew text. So there was clearly contact between the Levant and many parts of Asia in antiquity.
In the 1930s an issue of National Geographic included a story about the Pashtuns. That a significant number of the khels (kinship groups usually translated as tribes, though they really aren’t) were actually Jewish by religion, but converted to Islam under threat in the 19th Century. Occasionally this is referred to, but often in a way as to assume its been debunked. Given that almost all Pashtun history is oral, I’m not sure how one would verify it or debunk it. And it would, perhaps, explain a lot of Pashtun behavior – forced converts tend to become fanatical in order to demonstrate their fidelity to their new faith. This then gets passed down to subsequent generations.

@hovercraft: Almost every firearm related study has issues. The original ones, by Kleck et al (from FSU) in regard to defensive gun use had a limited data set, which the authors were very open about in the data section and, as a result, used a factor multiplication process to extrapolate from the sample to the population, which they were also very open about in the operations section. And they were very clear that, as a result, there was a range with a low and high end based on their work.
Lott’s stuff is a methodological mess. The same Northwestern University professor that debunked the Emory historian’s historical/archival research on firearm usage in the US then went and debunked Lott’s work. The difference is that Lott’s says what the 2nd Amendment Absolutists want to hear, so he gets an independently funded research institute while the Emory historian is now a bartender. Aside from the methodological issues that have now become regularly identified with econometric models in general – that these models do not lend themselves to replication and therefore independent verification of the findings (so not science, social, behavioral, or otherwise), Lott’s research can’t be replicated because every time he sends someone the data set to do so its missing data. Or he says he doesn’t have the data – he claims it was destroyed/lost when moving offices, which is essentially the same excuse the Emory historian gave. And that’s not even counting his creating sock puppet accounts to go after his detractors and a variety of other professionally dubious and unethical behaviors.
Do we have clear, empirical evidence that defensive uses of firearms happen? Yes, without a doubt. Do we really have any idea how many per year? No we don’t. And the reason for this is that the Federal government, which is the only institution in the US with the depth and breadth to do the funding for data collection and analysis is forbidden to do so because if it did that would be politicizing the issue of firearms, which are an enumerated foundational right in the US. So we don’t have good data and the premier, quantitative researcher into the topic is professionally compromised by his own behavior.

The Bad Monkey, LOL! The mister and I went there one afternoon when we got tired of walking. They had a decent bourbon selection. But when I went to the ladies’ room, I noticed they had an image of Michael Moore in the toilet.
