ABC, which is owned by Disney, has cancelled Roseanne.

ABC on cancelling 'Roseanne':

"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show."

— NBC News (@NBCNews) May 29, 2018

ABC's cancellation of 'Roseanne' comes after Roseanne Barr compared a former Obama adviser to an ape, and promoted false conspiracy theories about George Soros and Chelsea Clinton, including falsely accusing Soros of being a Nazi. https://t.co/n9ALtDCmgn

— NBC News (@NBCNews) May 29, 2018

Updated at 3:10 PM EDT

Disney CEO Bob Iger makes his own statement:

From Channing Dungey, President of ABC Entertainment: "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show."
There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing.

— Robert Iger (@RobertIger) May 29, 2018

I just posted this in the previous thread but I’ll put this here and delete the old comment:

We have Fox on at work (eww!!!) and they flatly state Roseanne’s tweet was racist. “ABC Cancels ‘Roseanne’ after Racist Tweet”. Even Fox isn’t playing.

Surprise, racist Trump lover is racist. WTF did ABC think was going to happen?

And I know I shouldn’t blame Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, or anyone else involved in the show, but they knew who they were signing on with, and they did it anyway.

I’d now like to know who decided to bring her back to TV, and more importantly, who funded that.

And I know I shouldn’t blame Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, or anyone else involved in the show, but they knew who they were signing on with, and they did it anyway.

@Mingobat (f/k/a Karen in GA): Yes you should. Especially Sara Gilbert. She was one of the writers, she knew exactly what they were throwing out there.

Again, I want to know who funded this. A lot of folks I’d considered decent just turned their heads and looked the other way, so they:

    1. Obviously aren’t decent
    2. Got paid enough to not have to worry about their futures in show business.

I was wrong that there wouldn’t be any significant action on this. Props to ABC/Disney.

I am completely unsurprised that a show billed as the “Conservative ID” and spent its run attacking liberal strawmen would turn out to have racist, bigoted cast members.

I’m glad that Sarah Gilbert, Wanda Sykes and ABC all denounced her, but fuck them for signing up in the first place. When you play with fire you get burned, and that’s clearly what happened here. They’re not innocent either.

It was more than a little depressing to learn in 2016 (and since) how many deplorables there are around us and just how deplorable they are.

This news doesn’t give me any hope that the network executives are non-deplorable. But it does give me some hope that the deplorable line is becoming unprofitable. That would be nice.

Dear White People & Trump Supporters:

This isn’t The 60’s. You will not talk to or treat us like this anymore. You will not mock us without consequence be it professional, financial or physical. I know you think that Trump’s election has awakened some type of primal scream in disgruntled white people, but it also awakened an anger and resolve in the communities this sack of shit and his collection of scumbags have decided to target. Get this straight right fucking now, you come for us or step to us with any of your ‘economic anxiety” and you will be dealt with. The only thing to be decided is will it be in a court room, board room or out in the street which where some of you need to be dragged and get your asses beat.

This is a great article about what tolerance is and isn’t. Summary: tolerance isn’t a moral precept, it’s a peace treaty, and those who violate the peace are subject to the rules of broken peace and/or war. In the case of Roseanne, racist/white-supremacist speech deserves pushback and consequences and I’m very glad both occurred. extranewsfeed.com/tolerance-is-not-a-moral-precept-1af7007d6376

This literally made my day when I saw it. I can’t believe I didn’t predict this was going to happen. I thought the show would be canceled fairly soon given its declining ratings, but not this way. Still, Barr had a history of this. ABC, Wanda Sykes, and Sara Gilbert can’t act like they’re surprised by this. The real mistake was giving a network show to this POS in the first place.

Did ABC truly think that the zeitgeist of this country had shifted that much that they would be able to get away with it? And why now all of a sudden, given the above, a are they discovering a conscience and a spine?

Tariffs of 25 percent will be applied to Chinese imports containing important technologies, including those related to Beijing’s made-in-China 2025 development program, the White House said. The final tariff list will be made public by June 15 with the new import taxes taking effect shortly thereafter.

The surprise White House statement drew qualified support from the leading Senate Democrat.

“While obviously more details are needed, this outline represents the kind of actions we have needed to take for a long time, but the president must stick with it and not bargain it away,” Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement.

I am increasingly in support of ousting Schumer as Senate minority leader.

Most of the time it’s applied to people who you shouldn’t merely tolerate – races other than yours, LGBT, etc. “Acceptance” is a better word, although really it applies only to people who are uncomfortable with people unlike them, and what we really should be striving for is recognition that we’re all people and deserve to be treated in all respects with fairness and dignity (well, except for people who behave badly enough to deserve ridicule for what they’ve done).

Interesting goings-on in the Virginia Senate Finance Committee today:

Lots of drama in Virginia’s Senate Finance Committee this afternoon (yeah – they’re baaaaack! LOL). I didn’t get video of the beginning of it, but I did get a bunch of it (see below), including the dramatic ending. Just the look on Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment’s [(R)] face as Senate Finance Committee Chair Emmett Hanger [(R)] rules his motion out of order and gavels the committee to a close is priceless. Credit for outmaneuvering Norment, who apparently was trying to limit actions the Senate can take on getting Medicaid expansion back into the budget, goes to Sen. Dick Saslaw, Sen. Frank Wagner, Sen. George Barker and Sen. Emmett Hanger. Nice job, gentlemen, for possibly saving Virginia Medicaid expansion, or at least for screwing up whatever nefarious plans the ever-devious Tommy Norment had in store! ?

    […]

Summary of Senate Finance Committee (as I understood, someone correct me if I’m wrong): After over an hour of discussion of the Hanger/Jones amendments (which include Medicaid expansion) and the latest version of the Norment amendments (which do not), a motion was made to report Hanger’s amendments. That vote failed. Then a motion was made to report Norment’s amendments, which passed. The plan, I assume, was for Hanger to then make a motion on the Senate floor when they meet to amend the budget there (where the whole senate could vote, since we have more than 20 votes in support of Medicaid, just not a majority of votes in the finance committee).

Then, in a sneaky move, Norment moved to reconsider the vote on Hanger’s amendments. They were about to take that vote, when Saslaw asked if that would make it “twice considered” in committee, which apparently by Senate rules might have made it impossible to consider it again on the floor. (Maybe, maybe not, since that rule might only apply to single bills, I’m not sure. But, better safe than sorry.)

There was back and forth confusion and arguing about what might happen, and they sort of lost track of which motion they had before them. Hanger tried to ask Norment why he wanted to reconsider the vote, and Norment said “we don’t discuss motives.” And then, Hanger abruptly ajourned the meeting. (Fortunately, a motion to adjourn takes precedent over any other motion being considered.) So that means Medicaid expansion will have to be (and still can be) offered up as a floor amendment.

    (Emphasis added.)

Norment wanted to say, “How dare you question my integrity and honor!!11”, but Sessions already used that line up. (groucho-roll-eyes.gif)

This is example #235,867,102 of why state and local politics is so important. Thank goodness the Virginia Senate committee didn’t fall for it this time.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

And then they spent months frantically trying to keep her under control long enough for the season to end. It’s not a coincidence that this happened right after the season finale aired and they stopped being able to lean on her to behave every. single. day.

Dungey may have been bending over backwards to appear “fair” to white racists, without fully realizing that white racists will never, ever respect her no matter how many shows she gives them.

Reading between the lines, I suspect that she’s been getting pitches from well-known TV producers (not sure who) who’ve been trying to sell the “racists need TV shows, too!” line and she didn’t want to automatically alienate them. The demographics of broadcast TV are very ugly right now, and poor whites tend to dominate because they don’t have cable or streaming services.

They knew Roseanne would blurt out her real racist feelings again- she’s incapable of self policing.

They really don’t have to express every thought that runs thru their heads. People don’t say things all the time. It’s not even that difficult. Have you ever NOT said something in order to keep a job? Sure. All adults have. I do it at least weekly.

Valerie Jarrett is a class act.

Valerie Jarrett, former adviser to President Barack Obama, responded to actress Roseanne Barr’s comment referring to her as an “ape” on Tuesday, saying ABC made the right decision in canceling its hit sitcom starring the actress.

“First of all, I think we have to turn it into a teaching moment. I’m fine. I’m worried about all the people out there who don’t have a circle of friends and followers coming to their defense,” Jarrett said during a town hall on MSNBC called “Everyday Racism in America.”

When asked if ABC made the right call in canceling the sitcom “Roseanne,” Jarrett said that the network did and that Bob Iger, the chief executive officer of Disney, had called her before the announcement.
Iger apologized, Jarrett said, adding that he told her there would be zero tolerance for those types of comments.

“He wanted me to know before he made it public that he was canceling the show,” she said.

    Trump’s not a liar. He’s a madman.

Okay, I’m glad that’s been settled then.

Balderdash: Trump went after the “failing and corrupt” New York Times for citing a senior White House official “who doesn’t exist” and admonished the newspaper to “use real people, not phony sources.” It turned out the senior official in question had spoken at a White House briefing arranged by Trump’s aides and attended by dozens of reporters.

Bunk: Trump attacked “the 13 Angry Democrats” working for Robert S. Mueller III, apparently referring to prior party registration. But Mueller himself is a Republican, appointed by a Republican who was himself appointed by Trump.

Poppycock: He called for “pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there [sic] parents once they cross the Border into the U.S.” There is no such law, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions has acknowledged that family separation “inevitably” results from Trump’s “zero-tolerance” enforcement policy.

Patent nonsense: “Who’s going to give back the young and beautiful lives (and others) that have been devastated and destroyed by the phony Russia Collusion Witch Hunt?” Trump asked. I can picture the GoFundMe campaign: “Paul Manafort, a young and beautiful 69-year-old, had a promising career ahead of him selling access to the White House before he was cruelly indicted . . . ”

Early in this weekend’s monsoon of malarkey, New York Times White House reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted that Trump told “demonstrable falsehoods” — and she was roundly ridiculed on Twitter for failing to say Trump was lying. She defended herself by saying Trump’s pronouncements “can be hard to label” because “he often thinks whatever he says is what’s real.”

I don’t know if you remember this but during the Bush Years media and Republicans all pointed to NASCAR as the recreation activity for Real Americans.

    NASCAR is quietly dying:

Just read yesterday that Lowes is pulling the plug on the 48 car sponsorship. The home-improvement giant has been in the sport since 1997 and with Jimmie Johnson and Hendrick Racing since 2001. Their logo on the hood for all seven of Johnson’s Championships.
It’s just another indicator of how this sport, which saw explosive growth in the 90s and early 2000s, is now running on empty.

Golf courses are dying too. There are two in this county that are being sold at “absolute auction”- that means they’ll take just about anything for them. They can’t give them away.

They have to cater to new customers or they die, and 70 year old white guys aren’t new customers.

    @TenguPhule:

Wow. This is really breaking out the thesaurus to come up with this hierarchy of mendacity.

The minute I woke up and saw Betty Cracker’s post about Roseanne Barr, I instantly went to ABC.com’s contact page and sent them a message that I would only be watching their programming in order to select advertisers to boycott. Before I could post my comment on Betty’s post, the B-J squirrels went on strike and the DB error started.

But I’m taking credit for the quickest, most effective activist boycott in the history of modern political thought!!! Sent to ABC, and ABC called Roseanne and fired that bigot cold. Awesome!

I bet I wasn’t the first boycott promise they got, either. ‘Cause we sleep late sometimes. I was up really late last night, went to bed at 12 after the news and such. Got back up at 1:30 and spent a couple of hours surfing and reading, had a snack, went back to bed, laid there restlessly until probably 4. So I did my boycott message as soon as I could. Won’t look for her racist tweet, don’t need it will take Betty’s word for it.

I wish I had a copy of my message to ABC, they have a limit on the length of messages, so I had to deletd an adjective here to add information there, it kept me succinct, if you know what I mean. Lean AND mean! But polite and professional.

@Kay: The media is awful, as we know.

The investigation continues to show a breathtaking amount of questionable activities, unethical behavior and collusion – though it’s not all necessarily criminal. But this is basically what’s been happening since Day 1. It’s the same story, every day: Trump is incredibly corrupt and at the very least had his people doing really awful things.

Then you compare that to Trump, who shifts to a new (fake) outrage about the Russian investigation every day.

The 2nd one is much more exciting, so they cover it more and talk about it more often, instead of showing that literally everything we’ve found out is really, really bad – and that all we’ve seen is the public information about the case.

It’s deeply reminiscent of her current conspiratorial attitude especially with regards to calling people Nazis while being buddy-buddy with literal neo-Nazis, and also somehow viewing Soros as anti-Jewish. A lot of people in that anti-trans woman scene simultaneously think trans women were invented by the Nazis and are some sort of a Jewish plot, so it comes off similarly.

There are a couple of other reasons, money being the big one. If you have a lot of it you can belong to a very private golf club. If you have a middling amount you have to play at one of the lower order clubs, like drumpf’s dumps. And Nascar has the same problem, fans getting older and new fans can’t afford the tickets/hotel costs, let alone the beer for the weekend. The country is starting to see the effects of the uber wealthy stealing every extra nickel and dime from everyone just as the boomers are starting to die off in bigger numbers. Smaller, poorer customer base not a good way to keep all that money flowing in. Besides anything that hurts the France family (own Nascar) is OK by me.

The most famous story at the end of her original show’s run was that she was firing writers so fast, she issued numbered t-shirts to the writing staff so she wouldn’t have to be bothered to learn the names of people she was going to fire anyway. And she never got less crazy, she just got less power to screw with people like that.

She had to know what a loose cannon Roseanne is, and the whole setup of the new show was like waving raw meat in front of a grizzly bear. Roseanne was bound to explode (again), especially (as you pointed out) once they could no longer keep her locked down on a daily basis.

But I didn’t like the vibe I perceived of moving from “Sara Gilbert bears some responsibility for this clusterfuck” to the personal (and fact-free) piling-on: “Poor thing, she hasn’t really done anything since the original show.” It’s gratuitous, and what’s the point?

@chopper: I dunno man, still early in the ET, though we’re prolly gonna wander way, way OT to get there.

I remember the first Roseanne and how her sister character went from job to job, the kids grew up on screen, and how most of the time the family and conversation were on the ‘home’ set. It was definitely one of the go-to shows because Barr could be brash, sassy, and still show a human touch; the main topic thread of any given show was relatable because it was based on a real life I could understand, in contrast to All in the Family or Maude or, Gaia save us, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.. There was also space for other characters to grow and have their own story lines. How to separate that out from the dismal shitstains in real life, I’m uncertain. Do I now decide what I liked earlier is crap because of what I know now? What it was then hasn’t changed.

And holy smokes, there was never, ever anything like Hot L Baltimore.

Formula One? Is that a baby food?
It’s never really been all that big here.
Nascar was a few years ago. But people started getting greedy, some in charge were/are pretty full of themselves, facilities were getting older, you might remember we had a not insignificant recession, my fellow boomers are starting to die off in greater numbers, and it is possible that people have grown somewhat tired of hanging around drunks (I think about half the people that showed up at a Nascar race went for the parties and barbecue.

@Steve in the ATL: Last summer, MrsFromOhio and I played hooky and went out on a sandbar near Sandusky, OH, on Lake Erie. We were just hanging out, hiking around and soaking up the sun, when we hear this most amazing mechanical sound. It’s not unusual to have all manner of aircraft flying through that sector, it’s one of the busier commercial corridors. But this was something way beyond that.

We look all around, and here comes a flight of four Chinooks along the shoreline in a 1-2-1 formation, cruising about angels 10, and scaring the crap out of the wildlife. It was both cool and formidable.

@randy khan: Toleration is not the opposite of intoleration, but is the counterfeit of it. Both are despotisms. The one assumes to itself the right of withholding liberty of conscience, and the other of granting it.

Like I said above, Gilbert made the common mistake of thinking an abusive asshole like Roseanne could be trusted to keep their word. Trump’s not the only narcissist who destroys or damages everyone who comes in contact with them.

@Steve in the ATL: LOLolol no, but we were certainly having a good time out there. The sound of just one is pretty convincing, four of them together defies words, and they were running at a pretty good clip. That they just kept on going was also a good thing.

This is true but there is far more trailer trash with no money these days and while it takes money to enjoy F1 I just don’t see F1 ever having the kind of draw that Nascar had a few years ago.

@Ruckus: It was a secret, guilty pleasure, staying up late on school nights to hear swear words on network teevee.

Chopper, sorry man, but a TBogg unit is 500 comments. Totally dig the decor, though, reminds me of an acid trip while watching reruns of Time Tunnel.

@BruceFromOhio: It’s an aspirational comment. And we’re getting there!

I mean, after Roseanne got herself immersed in juicy birfer goodness, it was only a matter of time until her brain got totally infected.

Never watched her first show, didn’t even thing of watching this one. During the first run, though, I had a lot of admiration for John Goodman. She was in the tabloids constantly and I never saw a peep from him on anything she did. A stand up guy.

ETA: and that’s my first contribution to a potential TBogg.

Are you seriously comparing the Dixie Chicks “I just want you to know I’m embarrassed that Bush is from Texas” to Roseanne’s “Valerie Jarrett looks like an ape”?

    @zhena gogolia:

I’m old enough to remember Roseanne on Carson and thought she was really funny (in a female Jay Leno sort of way). It wasn’t until the National Anthem fiasco that I started picking up on the fact that she was bug-nuts crazy.

Acted in the play once. Enjoyed muchly what Conchata Ferrell brought to the part of April in tranposing it from her run on the stage to the short-lived TV show.

Not much chance of Tbogging this one, but I’ll do my part.
Roseanne appears to have gone on a Twitter tear after the firing and now is blaming it all on Ambien.
