Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Second rate reporter says what?

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Let there be snark.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Come on, man.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

The willow is too close to the house.

We still have time to mess this up!

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

The revolution will be supervised.

A monster turned a transcript of Carlson's show into a manifesto and then killed 22 people. His career depends on no one pointing this out. https://t.co/cJVZdr2eIQ

— LOLGOP (@LOLGOP) August 7, 2019

What time of day does Fox News transition from "the celebrity used bad language" to "do not be deceived by the rootless cosmopolitans who control society, blood and soil are the only truth?" Like happy hour-ish?

— David Roth (@david_j_roth) August 7, 2019

Perspective: Tucker Carlson’s claim that white supremacy is a hoax is easy to prove wrong, @Sulliview writes.

Just watch his show. https://t.co/ixQxrxKPAa

— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) August 7, 2019

Facing mounting controversy for declaring the very real problem of white supremacy in America to be a "hoax," Tucker Carlson announced at the end of his Wednesday night Fox News show that he will be taking a vacation. https://t.co/vpXNHmSoaw

— CNN (@CNN) August 8, 2019

IIRC, Bill O’Reilly went from ‘sudden vacation’ to ‘suspended’ to ‘Bill who?’ when he pushed the boundaries a little too far. One can hope that Carlson will also be forced into doing podcasts from his basement… assuming Tucker’s penthous *has* a basement…

I hear he got a tip on a fun 6-day weekend airbnb spot from the NRA social media team. https://t.co/uc6eqsKRac

Question: What companies pay for advertisements on Carlson’s show? A nice neat list of places to avoid would be nice.

For once I didn’t yell at NPR on my drive home. I did, however, sit in my car and cry because of the ICE deportation story. Listening to a little girl cry for her father and say he’s not a criminal broke my heart completely. ?

They didn’t even coordinate with Child Protective Services – leaving kids abandoned.

Iowa Poll — Monmouth University* — August 4

    Biden……….28%
    Warren…….19%
    Kamala…….11%
    Wilmer……….9%
    Pete…………..8%
    Amy…………..3%
    Steyer………..3%
    Gillibrand……2%
    Yang…………..2%
    Booker……….1%

The latest Monmouth poll shows a big drop in Sanders support among voters likely to attend the Iowa caucuses

… Biden continues to lead the Democratic field with 28% support among voters who are likely to attend the Iowa caucuses in February 2020. This is nearly identical to his 27% support level in April. [Note: Biden had not yet declared his candidacy at the time of Monmouth’s first 2020 poll in Iowa.] However, Warren is now closing the gap at 19% support, up from 7% four months ago. Support for Sanders has gone in the opposite direction, now at 9% compared with 16% in April. California Sen. Kamala Harris clocks in at 11% (up from 7%) and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has 8% (similar to his 9% in April).

Wilmer nearly won this state 3 years ago. Now he’s sunk to a single digit and faces a humiliating 5th place finish.

@MomSense: coordinating with Child Protective Services would not be consistent with the plan. The plan was to terrorize children on back to school day.
IIRC, Esquire Magazine had a long form article on the Beslan School Massacre. The Trump back to school raids reminded me of that particular horror.

Hopefully neighbors, friends, teachers, and churches have taken the kids in, but I’m really worried about their safety. You g kids are vulnerable to trafficking. Older kids are vulnerable to trafficking and gang recruitment. I’m beside myself – but this subject of child protection hits close to home because of my work life. I’m feeling panicked.

Why are white supremacists so uniformly un-supreme?

I’ve always thought we should never use “white supremacy” but should instead say “white delusions”. Those clowns are losers who know that the only way they can be considered successful is if white people are by definition considered more successful than any others. They demand that everyone else recognize their delusions as reality.

Yeah, when they say they just want to hang around with their own kind and celebrate white culture, somehow I’m guessing they’re not reciting John Donne sonnets to one another. I remember back when Larry King was doing radio, a white supremacist type would occasionally call in and complain that he was being discriminated against because he was white. And King would reply, “Sir, you’re being discriminated against because you’re stupid.”

@David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch: Finishing 5th in Iowa would be the effective end of his campaign, particularly if Warren won. Even coming in 3rd in NH the next week wouldn’t be enough. I think he will stay in through the Vermont primary, then drop out. What the Berniacs will do at that point is anyone’s guess. But that prospect is much less threatening when they’re less than a tenth of the primary electorate.

Oof. I’ve been hip-deep this summer in the history of white supremacy, so it is (the tiniest bit) gratifying to see this bigot “vacationed” for a period.
My College is using MARCH – the illustrated history of John Lewis’s role in the Civil Rights movement – as a cross-college read. I am doing all of the curriculum tie-ins and extra history materials for faculty. One of the things I wanted to provide them was a series of careful definitions — an important one being the definition for “white supremacy.”

Too often I feel like “white supremacy” conjures images of skinheads, neo-Nazis, etc., (and FSM knows there are plenty of those around) and this lets off the (arguably) more dangerous white supremacists that understand tact and context.
Anyway, I develop this definition from Stephen Kantrowitz, a historian of … white supremacy (Ben Tillman and the Reconstruction of White Supremacy ahem)

Total and unconditional white male monopoly on authority, in every sphere of life — from the household to national politics. Reinforced from plantations and farms to the Supreme Court, and achieved through the entire legal, social and economic system.

And this definition for “demagoguery” (since Trump is the Grand Dragon of White Supremacy) is really marvelous, though it relates to the sad case of Sen. Lester Hunt (D-WY) Dying for Joe McCarthy’s Sins by Rodger McDaniel:

“Characterized by an appeal to prejudice and ignorance rather than logic and reason, demagoguery flourished during times when people have rational cause to be concerned about events beyond their control. By manipulating their fears, demagogues give frightened people an invitation to think irrationally about difficult times.” p. 146

And folks if you’ve never found Peggy McIntosh’s article on White Privilege (“Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”) you’re really missing out. (Essay is googleable)

    sigh…

So then if GOP retains Senate, as is likely…so if he wins, Biden is banking on what exactly? This “unknown” asset will make McConnell will treat his presidency better than PBO….hmmm….not what could that asset be…

Joe Biden, touring Iowa, told reporters, in so many words, that his plan is to have an ineffectual, failed presidency. Or, as Biden put it more pithily, “Ending the filibuster is a very dangerous move.”

Biden is expressing one of his most deeply held beliefs, which is his boundless faith in the goodness of the Senate. This is the point Biden was attempting to make in his controversial nostalgic riff about his history of working with segregationists. The Senate brings people together, even people as different as Joe Biden and the segregationists. (Biden failed to anticipate that some Democrats would interpret this to mean that Biden and the segregationists were not so different after all)…

@Dorothy A. Winsor: @JPL: One of the people I follow on Twitter retweeted a thread that Gordon worked hard to get the CIA workforce diversified with more women and POC and was particularly good to one disabled employee who had issues with access and hostility when she first started working there. Trump had Pence tell her she was fired, but she had her resignation letter already typed up, because she knew her job was toast. She was by law the person who replaced Coats after he left, and after a week or so spent trying to get around that they just kicked her out.

I read the WaPo article about the house the NRA wanted to buy and they linked to the real estate listing. It’s still unsold and price was dropped yesterday to $4.7 million, down from the $6 million the NRA was going to spend on it. Not nearly as tacky as Twitler’s gold-plated everything, but still a very ostentatious McMansion. Who needs nine bathrooms with four bedrooms?

Once the dust settles it will be interesting to see how many companies are prosecuted for employing those deported by ICE. My confident guess is a big fat zero.

Delurking to note that I’m seeing some interesting theories regarding the very young looking mass shooting survivor here in Dayton. Including one from a man in San Antonio who looked at Dayton’s local news feeds for more shooting victims and decided that a 7 year old girl who’d been shot Tuesday evening could be the actual pt in the picture.
The family did indeed drive the girl from west Dayton east to MVH. Because it’s two miles closer than Dayton Children’s, which is an excellent Level II Trauma pediatric hospital. So MVH would not be keeping a 7 year old patient because they don’t have a pediatric unit. And the area of west Dayton the girl was shot is primarily black. So no, the very young looking pt. is probably not a 7 year old shooting victim from west Dayton. Or any other pediatric trauma victim.
