Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Wait, what?

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Israeli Elections Part III: Heading For a Constitutional Crisis

by Adam L Silverman|  March 2, 20204:47 pm| 66 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Israel, Open Threads, Politics, Silverman on Security

While everyone is focused on Super Tuesday and the Democratic Primary, Israel is having its third election to try to establish an actual government, rather than Bibi’s semi-perpetual caretaker one, today. As of right now the exit polls seem to indicate that Israel is quickly careening towards a constitutional crisis! Let’s check out the meshugas, shall we?

From Bibi’s unofficial and unapproved political biographer:

Correction. All 3 exit polls give Netanyahu's coalition 60 seats. A long night ahead until the actual results https://t.co/lGmWrX1ikW

Israel facing the tensest vote-counting period in its history as even a handful of #IsraElex2020 votes can make the difference between further months of stalemate, if Netanyahu receives 60 seats as predicted by the exit polls, and the extra seat his coalition needs for a majority

— Anshel Pfeffer אנשיל פפר (@AnshelPfeffer) March 2, 2020

With 60 seats, the Netanyahu coalition’s preferred option for reaching a majority is tempting an opposition MK to defect. A few possible names spring to mind. If a defector isn’t forthcoming, Netanyahu will pressure Gantz to join, or perhaps Lieberman will have a change of heart.

— Anshel Pfeffer אנשיל פפר (@AnshelPfeffer) March 2, 2020

If he somehow gains a majority and 61 MKs back his move against the legal system, Israel will face a constitutional crisis and for the first time a prime minister will claim he is not accountable to the rule of law. https://t.co/VBL1KXOJ9w

— Anshel Pfeffer אנשיל פפר (@AnshelPfeffer) March 2, 2020

The constitutional crisis is what Bibi will try to jam through Knesset if he is, indeed, able to form coalition government after the votes are counted. Remember, for Bibi this election is about remaining prime minister or going to prison. It isn’t about Israel’s security or the common good or anything else. It is solely about not going to prison.

Netanyahu's triumph, like his campaign, is predicated on erasing this fact ⬇️ https://t.co/1OJQRDT0is

— Noga Tarnopolsky נגה טרנופולסקי نوغا ترنوبولسكي (@NTarnopolsky) March 2, 2020

The Mercer’s appear to have their preferred candidate in Israel, not just the US.

There is Breitbart's Aaron Klein celebrating next to Yair & Avner Netanyahu tonight. https://t.co/oPzI0K3uSe

— Noga Tarnopolsky נגה טרנופולסקי نوغا ترنوبولسكي (@NTarnopolsky) March 2, 2020

I think a lot of the reason that the numbers shifted between the first two elections held last year and today is that because of the actions of the President’s peace negotiating team, Bibi has made it very clear that if his coalition is reelected and he’s able to remain prime minister, that he will annex all the settlements in Area A, as well as significant portions of Area C (the Jordan River valley). This would leave the Palestine Authority with the West Bank equivalent of a terrestrial archipelago. A geographic reality that would make it impossible for there to ever be an actual Palestinian state as there would be no contiguous geography to establish a state. As is too often the case, fear and hate may carry the day.

https://twitter.com/MairavZ/status/1233982901982650369

Now we wait and see if the actual election results match the exit polls. And if Bibi is able to convince the one or two members of Knesset elect to jump to his coalition, if he doesn’t make it all the way to 61 seats outright, so he can try to destroy Israel’s constitution and rule of law system so he can stay out of prison.

Update at 6:25 PM EST

The Times of Israel is reporting updated exit polls!

Updated exit polls reveal Netanyahu coalition set back to 59 seats

Channels 12 and 13 update their exit poll results to include the last two hours of voting — 8 p.m. till 10 p.m. — and deliver possible bad news to a triumphant Likud.

The new figures in both polls show a drop in Likud’s favored rightist-Haredi coalition from 60 to 59 seats, slightly further from the needed 61-seat majority.

Channel 13’s results are:
Likud 37
Blue and White 34 – two more than the original results
Joint List 14
Shas 9
United Torah Judaism 7 – one less
Labor-Gesher-Meretz 7 – one more
Yisrael Beytenu 6 – two less
Yamina 6

Channel 12’s:
Likud 37
Blue and White 32 – one less
Joint List 15 – one more
Shas 9
Yisrael Beytenu 7 – one more
United Torah Judaism 7
Labor-Gesher-Meretz 7
Yamina 6 – one less

From CNN:

Sen. Amy Klobuchar will end her presidential bid on Monday and endorse Joe Biden, a campaign aide tells CNN.

The Klobuchar campaign confirmed that the senator is flying to Dallas to join the former vice president at his rally, where she will suspend her campaign and give her endorsement on the eve of Super Tuesday.

Not surprising, but notable. Open thread.

Comment on NBPP 2021 Zero premium automatic renewal mapping

Commenting on federal rule making is good citizenship.

Two colleagues and I have been writing in the plan choice, administrative friction and zero premium space for the past year.  This gives us some expertise and insight on the implications of new administrative frictions that are being proposed in a new CMS rule for the 2021 ACA exchange plans.  Under the proposed rule CMS would assign full premium plans to people who qualify for a zero premium plan.  Zero premium plans would still be available under an active choice instead of the current passive choice availability.  We believe that the rule change would lead to tens of thousands of people to lose their coverage.

Below the fold  is our comment on the proposed Notice for Benefits and Payment Parameters 2021 rule:

Monday Morning Open Thread: The Work Goes On

It is Sunday, March 1st.

Super Tuesday is in two days.

Between last night’s SC results and the exit of Steyer and Mayor Pete, we now have exactly zero idea how the upcoming 14 primaries will play out.

If you’re in a Super Tuesday state, show up and vote. It’s a new ballgame.

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) March 1, 2020

VOTE FOR THEM ANYWAY. This isn’t The Bachelor. Asked and answered. https://t.co/nkYY8bVA6D

— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) March 1, 2020

Really, though, it’s not a bad article:

… [I}n all 50 states, there are elections down-ballot, ranging from must-win state house and senate elections to district attorneys, school board, county clerks, tax collector, judges, justices of the peace, and library boards (to name just a few of the many other positions that might be on your ballot.) And too often, folks who do show up at the polls fail to cast their votes for positions outside the top two or three, in part because they feel they don’t know enough to make a choice.

Go knock doors for those state and local candidates. Your energy will yield dividends, because the voter contact you do will make a difference for the entire ticket: young people and communities of color especially, who often feel dismissed or ignored by national candidates, can be more directly energized by local issues and candidates. And at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter which Democratic campaign gets someone to the polls as long as they get there.

Even if the candidate you support loses, the campaign itself strengthens party infrastructure for the next cycle. If the candidate wins, even better: A Democrat is now in office who can govern, deliver on their promises, and help prevent the GOP from causing further harm…

While it might be tempting to take a principled stand and not vote, the facts are what they are: The general election will be between Trump and the eventual Democratic nominee. You don’t get to go off-menu. The people who will be most harmed by your failure to vote against Trump are people who are already seriously hurting — that is a responsibility to take seriously, especially if you live in one of the battleground states where the margin could be dangerously close…

There’s very few have earned the right to stay home if they can’t get exactly what they want with their vote. Yesterday:

BREAKING: The amazing John Lewis maneuvered his way though a jam packed crowd on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, climbed on to a small ladder and urged us all to keep fighting and keep soldiering forward. An amazing moment as we close out this year’s #Selma55 bridge crossing. pic.twitter.com/4wLCJMH9Gw

— Kristen Clarke (@KristenClarkeJD) March 1, 2020

That John Lewis, while battling pancreatic cancer, found the strength to stand on the bridge today and urge us all to go out and vote like we’ve never voted before, steps away from where he was attacked 55 years ago is one of the greatest moments of our democracy. #Selma55

Good morning everyone,

As we ease into Super Tuesday, make sure to support the candidate of your choice.

I was following the 2018 on various  youtube sites going “I know where that is, I’ve been down that road.  Numerous beautiful spots were affected (I don’t want to say destroyed as this is all natural happenings) not to mention many homes.  About half the roads down in the Pahoa area are gone and the lovely circle route from there gone.  All in all quite a demonstration of Nature’s/Pele’s power.
