Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

This really is a full service blog.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Election Year Open Thread: New Hampshire — It’s NOT for Lovers

by Anne Laurie|  February 10, 202010:58 pm| 111 Comments

This post is in: C.R.E.A.M., Election 2020, Open Threads

New @EmersonPolling and @Suffolk_U polls show Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, and Amy Klobuchar as the top three candidates in New Hampshire

— Julia Manchester (@JuliaManch) February 10, 2020

New Hampshire’s reputation for volatility is already on full display. Buttigieg is +14 in less than a week in one tracking poll, and other pollsters warn big shifts are still likely in #FITN.

Plus, what CNN is doing to prevent another Iowa poll meltdown.https://t.co/bODgy7rdDf

— Steven Shepard (@POLITICO_Steve) February 8, 2020

“We can’t afford it” is literally the state’s proud motto (Live Free or Die Trying). The general aim of their much-advertised #FITN primary is to be ‘Not Iowa’, because midwestern nice makes Granite Staters puke. No surprise some of them are abandoning their original favorite (bastard) son for two candidates whose current positioning is very much in line with the ‘make it do, wear it out, use it up, or go without’ New England puritan ethos…

In Nashua, Pete Buttigieg draws more than 1,800 people to first town hall of the day, biggest crowd of the year. pic.twitter.com/OT4JAMR6Fs

— Jonathan Easley (@JonEasley) February 9, 2020

In Salem, ?@amyklobuchar? sets the tone for the next two days in New Hampshire as she barnstorms the state:

“I have been bolted down and I am finally unleashed.” pic.twitter.com/gnePkSXFe2

— Jasmine Wright (@JasJWright) February 10, 2020

10 Democratic candidates spoke in Manchester tonight in front of an arena full of different campaigns’ supporters. Only one got booed, and only one group did the booing: Bernie Sanders’s supporters booed Buttigieg (after he took a dig at “revolution” being the only option)

— Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere) February 9, 2020

Buttigieg responds to Sanders hitting him for taking money from wealthy donors: "Bernie is pretty rich and I would happily accept the contribution from him."

GOP Stupidity Open Thread: Mitt Romney Has Nothing to Worry About

And yet Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, a French fascist from a party founded by some of Hitler’s last bodyguards, was welcomed with thunderous applause. https://t.co/4Cvc7fWspn

— zeddy (@Zeddary) February 9, 2020

And CPAC was never exactly Mitt’s kinda people anyways. Remember when we could make fun of the grifters, resume-padders and grievance voters who hung around that event like flies circling carrion?

But he’ll go to a place he knows would result in violence against Romney

Of all the supposed “true conservatives” who’s become Trump bootlickers, Schlapp is one of the dumbest and one of the worst https://t.co/NIEFaiJac2

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) February 9, 2020

I wish I could remember which twitter wit referred to Matt Schlapp as ‘the sound made by two porkchops falling onto a wet kitchen floor.’

These Trump remoras can’t make me like Mitt Romney, but they’re making me more sympathetic to the general, near-extinct class of Honorable Republicans.

Worth the two minutes.

Colbert is a gem. pic.twitter.com/To69UTmYxU

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) February 6, 2020

Mitt’s an upper-class Mormon. He grew up in a wealthy suburb in Michigan, moved to Massachusetts for college and to New York to make his fortune, moved back to Massachusetts to jump-start his political career because ‘nobody elects a president from Utah‘. He still has multi-million-dollar ‘family vacation homes’ in California and New Hampshire. But his primary loyalty has always been to his class and his faith, not necessarily in that order, and there’s no better place on earth for a well-to-do Mormon of impeccable LDS lineage than the state of Utah. They don’t care what that vulgar gentile in the White House thinks, although they’ll dutifully pull the (R) lever during the general election.

If you don’t trust my insight, McKay Coppins is also a Mormon:

Unsurprisingly, Romney’s vote to convict is not being met with the same apocalyptic rage in Utah as it is in much of MAGA country. https://t.co/hxhcAYJiFf

… because if *this* person is her opponent in November, Susan Collins will win reelection handily:

As a Maine resident, I can personally testify that more guillotine jokes are what redneck lobstermen and retirees want to see in politics https://t.co/FypRpccuTl

— Sneer Review (@TheSneerReview) February 9, 2020

According to the local Press-Herald, Kidman is an attorney who’s running in the Democratic primary, hoping to garner the existing $4million ‘Susan Collin’s opponent’ pot. I guess it’s not easy, getting legal work in Portland — ‘earned media’ is cheaper than buying tv ads.

Of course they have only the very best intentions…

We’ll be giving these shirts (& patches & buttons) to folks who talk with Mainers about our campaign to #StopElectingTheRich and #ShowUpForME.

More details on how to get your GuilloTee tomorrow! In the meantime, remember: there is not going to be a more convenient revolution.

Show Up for ME… Irresistable as a hashtag, I guess, but SRSLY?

I’m aware of the French Revolution, and how the story ends. A guillotine t-shirt reminds others about it in hopes that we’ll all be motivated to address the very serious problems with our government before a similarly violent uprising becomes inevitable.

— bre?️‍?kidman??for?Maine?(D) (@BeeKay4ME) February 8, 2020

Obvious question, answered:

Thanks for asking! AFAIK, I’m the only candidate in the race who‘s endorsed Bernie. I identify as a democratic socialist and I believe no industry which derives profit from denying us healthcare has a right to exist. Also support public-owned utilities. Happy to chat more!

Bloomberg Curious

by TaMara|  February 10, 20206:51 pm| 180 Comments

This post is in: Election 2020, Readership Capture

Ballots for the primary went out in the mail today for Colorado. We have been inundated with Bloomberg ads since November-December. The result is I have many Bloomberg-curious friends and ballots are arriving in days.

Because of who my friends are, politics are discussed at lunches, dinners and coffee breaks. I have Sanders-curious, Pete-curious and Yang-curious friends and while we talk, I’m able to give them resources for fact-checks.

But with Bloomberg, I actually have no counterpoint – I have not paid that much attention, but I know his ad-blitz has been effective here.

So give me the scoop. Pros and cons on the “Mike Can Get It Done” campaign.

I’ll check back later to see if he has survived the melee and if the blog is still standing.

Public Service Announcement: Ignore the National Polls

Public Service Announcement: Ignore the National Polls 2

The 2020 presidential election IS NOT A NATIONAL ELECTION! It will truly be contested in anywhere from about 5 to 20 states depending on who is the Democratic nominee, what is happening with the economy, and what else may or may not be going on in October and November of 2020. The national polls are nice in the feel good sense, but they are not and cannot tell us anything important about what is and is not going to happen in the 2020 presidential election. Ignore them lest they lull you into a fall sense of safety and security.

Check your own voter registration. Nag all your friends to check their voter registrations. Nag all your friends to nag their other friends to check their voter registrations. Vote up and down the ballot for every office and referendum and initiative. Nag all your friends to vote up and down the ballot for every office and referendum and initiative. And nag all your friends to nag their other friend to vote up and down the ballot for every office and referendum and initiative. Turnout, especially in the states that will decide the presidential election in the Electoral College, is all that matters. Turnout, to keep the House and flip the Senate is all that matters. Turnout to take as many governor’s mansions and state legislative seats ahead of the next round of congressional and state legislative reapportionment is all that matters. And these only happen with overwhelming turnout!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled existential dread.

I want them to love me like they love ‘Piac

That same Quinnipiac poll that Betty just wrote about has some very good news:

Far be it from me to get in the way of a Dems in Disarray media frenzy … but it the latest Quinnipiac poll has Trump at 42% and losing to every potential Democratic nominee

Bloomberg 51 – 42
Sanders 51 – 43
Biden 50 – 43
Klobuchar 49 – 43
Warren 48 – 44
Buttigieg 47 – 43

— Michael Cohen (@speechboy71) February 10, 2020

Whoever we we nominate has a good chance to win. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Buttigieg or Gabbard, but all the others are fine with me.

Let’s help whoever it is that ends up as president by giving them a Democratic Senate. Give here to the Balloon Juice Senate fund which is split between the eventual Democratic nominees in Maine, Iowa, NC, Arizona, Georgia, and Colorado. Raised the goal to 30K.

But her tarmac…

by Betty Cracker|  February 10, 20202:55 pm| 115 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Election 2016, Foreign Affairs, Open Threads, Politics

From The Post:

Attorney General William P. Barr acknowledged Monday that the Justice Department would evaluate material that Rudolph W. Giuliani, President Trump’s personal attorney, had gathered from Ukrainian sources claiming to have damaging information about former vice president Joe Biden and his family — though Barr and other officials suggested Giuliani was being treated no differently than any tipster.

At a news conference on an unrelated case, Barr confirmed an assertion made Sunday by Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) that the Justice Department had “created a process that Rudy could give information and they would see if it’s verified.”

Barr said he had established an “intake process in the field” so that the Justice Department and intelligence agencies could scrutinize information they were given.

So we’re supposed to believe that AG Barr — who lied to our faces about the Mueller report and illegally buried the whistleblower report — will treat reports from Trump’s personal lawyer whom Trump personally dispatched to Ukraine to manufacture dirt on one of Trump’s political rivals like a phoned-in tip from some random Karen? Pull the other one — it’s got bells on.

Republicans in Congress are working very hard to complete the work Trump unsuccessfully tried to extort from Ukraine’s president. If their efforts to poison the Democratic nominee don’t work, it will probably only be because Biden’s 2020 campaign died of unrelated natural causes instead.

*****

Meanwhile, aside from using the levers of power to cheat, Trump’s reelection strategy is lying and gaslighting:

The #TrumpBudget cuts:

– $500,000,000,000 from Medicare.
– $75,700,000,000 from Social Security and its companion program, Supplemental Security Income.

The best way to make sure these cuts never happen?

VOTE HIM OUT!https://t.co/9oWO6iHaJ5

Speaking of rich dudes who are contemptuous of vital social programs — only a real rich dude this time — maybe the media should vet Mike Bloomberg?

Quinnipiac national poll:
Sanders 25
Biden 17
Bloomberg 15
Warren 14
Buttigieg 10
Klobuchar 4https://t.co/YDbpcLu424

Vet, schmet — Bloomberg would be a wet dream for mainstream media organs (I said what I said). This guy does a pretty good job here though.
