Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

He really is that stupid.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Good lord, these people are nuts.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

No one could have predicted…

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

We still have time to mess this up!

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

$350m.

If SCOTUS denies the stay, this summer there will be legally incriminating & politically damaging evidence spread across screens everywhere in America.

Instead of asking whether Dems will replace Biden the press should be asking Republicans why they won’t replace Trump.

Update:  The Post news alert (can’t link) says $354 million — a million here, a million there, it starts adding up…

Update2:  It’s $364 million according to the AP and Alison Rose.

This is not a New York Times link:

Donald Trump likes the idea of a national ban on abortion past 16 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother, the New York Times reported on Friday morning.

Trump has veered away from taking a firm stance on abortion during his presidential campaign. He has taken credit for the US supreme court’s 2022 overturning of Roe v Wade, since he appointed three of the justices who took part in that decision, but he has also suggested that Republicans who take extreme stances on abortion lose elections.

“Know what it is about 16?” Trump told one individual, according to the Times, which based its report on two people with knowledge of Trump’s thoughts. “It’s even. It’s four months.”

Color me surprised, since what I thought Trump liked about 16 was that it is the age of consent in some states.

I’m sure Susan Collins will base her Trump endorsement on this bullshit, but come the fuck on.  It’s no surprise that the Republican-leaning NYT will print this shit, but I hope Democrats will use this opportunity of Trump raising this issue to point out that Republicans in power aren’t going to do shit unless it involves taking more rights away from women.

Also, I caved and got a Bluesky account, so if you want to follow me there, I’m mistermix.

Again With This Fucking Guy

Oh ffs:

Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) announced Friday that he will not run for president after months of flirting with a campaign that could have complicated the 2024 race for the White House.

Manchin said during a speech in West Virginia he “will not be involved in a presidential run” as he continues to focus on other ways to bring a divided country together. He also said he did not want to play the role of a spoiler as President Biden nears a likely rematch with former president Donald Trump.
Cut through the 2024 election noise. Get The Campaign Moment newsletter.

“I just don’t think it’s the right time,” Manchin said. “Democracy is at stake right now.”

Manchin, a centrist Democrat who has relished his influence in a closely divided Senate, has stoked speculation for months that he could enter the presidential race as an independent or third-party candidate. He has aligned himself with No Labels, a bipartisan group that has been looking into fielding a possible centrist ticket.

I will never understand the gigantic fucking egos and what motivates people like Joe Manchin.

Can you imagine how much better off Democrats in WV would be if he spent 1/10th of the fucking time talking about himself talking about all of the good things that Biden and the last Congress did for the state of West Virginia. The Republicans in WV and in DC don’t want to talk about it either, but it has been a lot of amazing shit. Right now the state Democratic party is basically this awesome fucking lady named Kayla Young who is basically alone at the gates of Mordor doing her fucking best.

Florida’s Culture Wars Are Ending With a Whimper

by Betty Cracker|  February 16, 202412:40 pm| 90 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Back when Florida Statehouse Repubs thought DeSantis would be the GOP’s 2024 nominee, they fell all over themselves kissing his ass. Now that DeSantis has been exposed — and people in the state are grumbling about all the stupid culture war bullshit the statehouse wasted money on while real issues were ignored — the statehouse is backing off the DeSantis agenda. From the Tallahassee Democrat:

Is Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo putting Florida’s ‘war on woke’ to bed?

Reporters on Wednesday asked the Naples Republican about a quartet of bills included in the Republican Party of Florida’s legislative agenda approved this past weekend. They have not, however, either moved in either chamber or are stalled in the Senate.

Measures include prohibitions on the government display of Pride flags and taking down Confederate memorials, regulations of the use of pronouns, and a rollback of age restrictions for firearms purchases.

But with the meeting of committees coming to an end and budget negotiations moving to center stage, Passidomo said the bills in question were effectively dead. It takes an extraordinary effort to get a bill not approved in a committee to the floor for debate and final passage.

“Our bill process is not the Republican Party of Florida. We are the Legislature. We make the laws,” Passidomo said.

“… None of those bills are moving in the Senate anymore,” she went on, explaining that just because something is part of the state GOP’s agenda, she would not take it out of a committee “or violate our rules” to get it to the Senate floor.

Notably, she had no problem with doing that when her statehouse crew functioned as background performers in the governor’s ill-fated presidential campaign. But good riddance to all that bullshit anyway.

Also, DeSantis is walking back the book-banning spree that he simultaneously claims is a hoax, citing “bad actors” who may have to be restricted from requesting reviews. Or maybe not. He’s not sure. PEN America’s local spokesperson had the best response to that nonsense: (Florida Politics)

“Governor DeSantis’ denial that Florida is banning books, and his shifting blame to local school boards and Floridians, is a blatant attempt to avoid responsibility for the significant and ongoing harm caused by statutes that he championed. But there is one thing we can agree on: book banning has gone too far, and limiting challenges is a good first step toward protecting Florida’s libraries,” said Katie Blankenship, Director of PEN America’s Florida office.

Culture warriors nationwide are deflating like leaky bouncy castles — even in Florida. There’s still a lot of work to do, but you love to see it.

Open thread.

Sad, Predictable News: Alexei Navalny Is Dead

by Anne Laurie|  February 16, 20247:30 am| 237 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, RIP

alexei navalny dead in russia, pays the ultimate price for wanting freedom in his country. pic.twitter.com/8qrKdhxaOV

BREAKING: Alexei Navalny, the imprisoned Russian opposition leader, has died, the country's prison service says. He had been in jail since January 2021. https://t.co/pe9u4yIwdk

— The Associated Press (@AP) February 16, 2024

It was generally assumed — not least, I suspect, by Navalny — that his death in prison was a question of when, not if. Possibly his murder was intended to salve Putin’s wounded feelings that his big Tucker Carlson interview turned out to be a global source of mockery instead of awe. In any case, I believe the best way for America to respond is to pass a proper aid to Ukraine bill:

Alexei Navalny, the fiercest foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin who crusaded against official corruption and staged massive anti-Kremlin protests, died in prison Friday, Russia’s prison agency said. He was 47.

The Federal Penitentiary Service said in a statement that Navalny felt unwell after a walk on Friday and lost consciousness. An ambulance arrived to try to rehabilitate him, but he died.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says Putin was informed of Navalny’s death and the prison service was looking into the death in line with standard procedures…

Navalny, who was serving a 19-year sentence on charges of extremism, was moved in December from his former prison in the Vladimir region of central Russia to to a “special regime” penal colony — the highest security level of prisons in Russia — above the Artic Circle…

Navalny had been behind bars since January 2021, when he returned to Moscow after recuperating in Germany from nerve agent poisoning that he blamed on the Kremlin. Before his arrest, he campaigned against official corruption, organized major anti-Kremlin protests and ran for public office.

He had since received three prison sentences, all of which he rejected as politically motivated.

In Putin’s Russia, political opponents often faded amid factional disputes or went into exile after imprisonment, suspected poisonings or other heavy repression. But Navalny grew consistently stronger and reached the apex of the opposition through grit, bravado and an acute understanding of how social media could circumvent the Kremlin’s suffocation of independent news outlets…

Another Russian opposition leader murdered by Putin. Is there any doubt @navalny was murdered? Putin murdered him because he finally feels comfortable doing so. Why? Because @realDonaldTrump is inviting attacks on NATO, @TuckerCarlson is cheering Putin, so time to kill Navalny.

On The Road – TKH – Sinai Trail Pt. 4

TKH

Fauna and flora of the Sinai.

Let’s just say the Bedouin are not big on pets. There are some cats and dogs hanging around the settlements we passed through, but they were of the semi-feral variety it seemed to me. When food was served they would appear out of nowhere with the expectation of picking up some scraps. The reception they received from the Bedouin would not live up to BJ standards. The hikers received repeated “talking to’s” when they fed the animals while eating.

We had two dogs following us for days and one of the guides knew them as they had followed some of his groups before. This was in the mountains around St. Katherine where we climbed and descended steeply using ropes. The dogs always found a different way around these hairy spots that would not have been passable for the animals. And then, just as suddenly as they had appeared they disappeared again.

Some camels in the oasis Ein Kidd. I see no markings on their hides and think therefore that they are wild or feral.
