Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Republicans do not trust women.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Guest Post: Speaker Emerita Pelosi At the Karsh Institute for Democracy

Pelosi at UVA 2

Thank you, commentor Jeffro:

Below are some of the pics I took while attending the “Congress: Cornerstone of Democracy” event put on at UVA yesterday by the Karsh Institute for Democracy.

(pics were taken inside the Rotunda at UVA)

Speaker Emerita Pelosi was warm and funny as we would all expect. My biggest takeaway at the end came at the end of Q&A, after she had been asked about her biggest concerns and biggest hopes for our country. She said she understands the outrage but her advice was “don’t agonize…ORGANIZE!” I have to agree. 🙂

Pelosi at UVA

Other tidbits:
* She said that our current era reminded her of Thomas Paine’s famous quote about how “the times have found us”. Paraphrasing NP here: “It was true then when it produced the American Revolution. It was true when Abraham Lincoln led us through the Civil War and kept our country together. And it is true now.”

* She kept coming back to the main theme: Congress is in Article 1 for a reason, and that many of our current problems revolve around Congress not doing its job (ie, conducting oversight of trump)

* She closed by noting that she was thrilled to see so many young folks in attendance (I mean come ON, it IS a university Madame Speaker Emerita! LOL) and encouraged young people to not only participate but to run for office – especially the young women in the audience.

Pelosi at UVA 1

She did say a few times that she felt, unfortunately, not enough Americans view ‘preserving democracy’ as a primary motivator for voting, and therefore focusing on issues like health care, affordability, etc was a smart way to go for most Dem candidates. But she did add that ICE’s violent insanity and trump’s Greenland obsession/attacks on NATO were registering with many voters, too.

She predicted that Dems will win the House handily due to the president’s consistent low approval ratings. She also noted poor candidate recruitment for the Rs (and vice versa for us) as well as lots of R retirements. She’s cautiously optimistic about the Senate, too!

BREAKING: Nancy Pelosi won't seek reelection, ending her storied career in the U.S. House.

— The Associated Press (@apnews.com) November 6, 2025 at 9:03 AM

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi will not seek reelection to the U.S. House, bringing to a close her storied career as not only the first woman in the speaker’s office but arguably the most powerful in American politics…

Pelosi, appearing upbeat and forward-looking as images of her decades of accomplishments filled the frames, said she would finish out her final year in office. And she left those who sent her to Congress with a call to action to carry on the legacy of agenda-setting both in the U.S. and around the world.

“My message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power,” she said. “We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way.”

Pelosi said, “And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”

The decision, while not fully unexpected, ricocheted across Washington, and California, as a seasoned generation of political leaders is stepping aside ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Some are leaving reluctantly, others with resolve, but many are facing challenges from newcomers eager to lead the Democratic Party and confront President Donald Trump.

Pelosi, 85, remains a political powerhouse and played a pivotal role with California’s redistricting effort, Prop 50, and the party’s comeback in this week’s election. She maintains a robust schedule of public events and party fundraising, and her announced departure touches off a succession battle back home and leaves open questions about who will fill her behind-the-scenes leadership role at the Capitol.

Former President Barack Obama said Pelosi will go down in history as “one of the best speakers the House of Representatives has ever had.”…

People surprised by this forget that Nancy Pelosi voted against the Iraq War in 2002. She's a China Hawk, sure. But she also is a big believer in the House being able to rein in the Executive Branch.

Axios:

House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday threw her weight behind a rapidly accelerating effort by Democratic lawmakers to limit Trump’s power to unilaterally strike Iran.

Why it matters
: Democrats are infuriated that the Trump administration postponed briefings on the Middle East that were planned for Tuesday, and that rage is helping to fuel what was initially a fringe effort.

– “Yesterday, the Administration decided to withhold intelligence … in a slap in the face to the Congress,” Pelosi said in a statement.
– “That is why I am supporting War Powers Resolutions which reassert the Article One powers of the Congress and ensure the Administration does not keep the American people and their Representatives in the dark.”

Column by Paul Kane: The ex-speaker tore apart a copy of Trump’s 2020 address to Congress. This time, she says Democrats need to coalesce on one, short message. https://t.co/dqP7dDb4dx

— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) March 1, 2025

The Oval Office Occupant’s not-technically-State-of-the-Union speech is scheduled for this Tuesday, with TV coverage set to begin at 9pm EST. (NPR — Nice Polite Republicans — is very excited about it.) I’m glad to see she’s still fighting the good fight, and I’m sure some of you will have strong opinions about no-longer-Speaker Pelosi’s suggested response: “‘Let him stew in his own juice,’ Pelosi advises ahead of Trump’s speech” [gift link]:

… Pelosi will attend Tuesday’s joint session of Congress when Trump returns to the House chamber for the first time since that raucous speech. That one began with the president refusing to shake her hand and ended with her waving the shredded speech to her family and supporters in the gallery above.

Now a rank-and-file lawmaker, Pelosi retains a great degree of clout inside the Democratic caucus. Younger lawmakers continue to seek her counsel, with recent discussions including warnings to not turn themselves into part of the story during Tuesday’s speech and urging them to narrow their party’s message in next year’s midterm elections.

“Any demonstration of disagreement, whether it’s visual or whatever, just let him stew in his own juice. Don’t be any grist for the mill to say this was inappropriate,” Pelosi said Thursday morning…

After 20 years leading the caucus, Pelosi has largely ceded the spotlight to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) and his younger leadership team. She relishes her role as someone who still raises big money for Democrats but doesn’t have to answer for every lawmaker’s concern.

She sees similarities today to the two most recent times Democrats were completely locked out of power: in 2005 after George W. Bush’s reelection coincided with GOP wins of the House and Senate, and in 2017 after Trump’s first victory…

“You got a mountain of rocks,” Pelosi said, metaphorically referring to all the potential issues in an election. “What are the three or four? You’re going right for the jugular.”

To drive home the point, Pelosi gently swung her right hand into my neck. Pelosi stood comfortably for the 15-minute interview on the Capitol’s first floor, loosely holding a walking stick to help with balance.

show full post on front page

Pelosi, 84, underwent hip replacement surgery in mid-December after a fall while traveling in Europe with a bipartisan congressional delegation. She has steadily moved from the use of a walker to two walking sticks and, now, down to one…

… Democrats face a problem today in terms of the different sets of voters and the messages they want to hear. Party leaders believe that cost-of-living issues crippled Kamala Harris and some Democrats in last fall’s election with the decisive bloc of swing voters.

In this current moment, with Trump inching close to Russia and Elon Musk eviscerating some federal agencies, a large portion of the Democratic base wants a more fire-and-brimstone approach to fighting Trump.

Her advice is to give room for Democrats from particularly safe districts to make those angry appeals away from Washington.

“The most important thing in all of this is to prioritize. And Hakeem, he has that down. I have every confidence that he has that down,” Pelosi said. “Again, members will say I want this, I want that. Yeah, that’s interesting, talk about that at home.”…

She hopes Democrats can refrain from interjecting Tuesday, unlike House Republicans during the last two Biden addresses in the House chamber. Yet Pelosi has let younger Democrats know everyone has a breaking point.

“Unless you have something that is a moment,” she said. “That’s what a moment was, when I tore up the speech.”

But if they can focus the next seven months, Democrats could be poised for something bigger than just the narrow victory they need to win the House majority.

“This fall is everything. And we only need three seats,” she said. “I don’t want three seats, I want many more than that.”

From her mouth to the Trickster God’s hairy, pointed ears!

Harris will sit down with CNN for her first interview since launching presidential bid https://t.co/p9zIn82CDb

— The Associated Press (@AP) August 27, 2024

… The Democratic presidential nominee will be joined by her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in an interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash in Savannah, Georgia. The interview will air Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern time...

During her three-plus years as vice president, she has done on-camera and print interviews with The Associated Press and many other outlets, often at a pace more frequent than Biden…

Earlier this month, Harris had told reporters that she wanted to do her first formal interview before the end of August.

Harris travels with members of the media on Air Force Two for all trips and nearly always comes to the back of the plane to speak to them for a few minutes before takeoff. Her office insists that those conversations are off the record, though, so what she says can’t be used publicly.

She will rally voters in Savannah on Thursday as part of a bus tour that kicks off on Wednesday.

Nothing is finished until it is finished correctly… Politico reports “‘He’s got to pay a price’: Unaired footage reveals Nancy Pelosi’s Jan. 6 fury”:

Nancy Pelosi spent the duration of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack focused on ensuring Joe Biden would be certified president as soon as possible. Then she turned her attention to Donald Trump.

“I just feel sick about what he did to the Capitol and the country today,” Pelosi said as she slumped, visibly exhausted, in the back of her SUV in the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 7. “He’s got to pay a price for that.”

Pelosi’s comment was included in about 50 minutes of unaired footage captured by her daughter, filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, who was at the former speaker’s side at key moments on Jan. 5, 6 and 7 in 2021. POLITICO has reviewed the footage, which HBO turned over this week to the Republican-led House Committee on Administration.

The panel is conducting an investigation aimed at undermining the findings of the Jan. 6 select committee, which found Trump singularly responsible for the havoc his supporters unleashed on the Capitol, and spotlighting the security failures that exacerbated the violence. The panel has reviewed video from various sources, including security footage and the clips from HBO.

It’s the most detailed glimpse yet of Pelosi’s rushed evacuation from the Capitol, showcasing her deep discomfort at being forced to flee from the rioters — who she feared would see the evacuation as a twisted victory — and her insistence that Congress return to finish certifying the election. It also showed how her focus quickly shifted to impeaching Trump for a second time, an effort that was ultimately successful, as well as preparing to fire Capitol security officials who she believed mismanaged the threats to the building…

As Pelosi huddled with congressional leaders at Fort McNair, waiting for authorities to quell the riot and secure the Capitol, visibly shocked lawmakers offered play-by-play commentary while watching news footage.

“How quick can Trump pardon them?” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) asked while watching video of the rioters. Nearby, Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and other House leaders Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and James Clyburn (D-S.C.) did not offer a response.

Trump did not take any steps in the final two weeks of his presidency to pardon Jan. 6 rioters but has indicated in recent months that he would do so in a second term…

8) One new detail: HBO informed the House that it redacted a few brief moments of Pelosi’s evacuation footage because they included stray comments made by her minor grandson, who was at her side that day.

3.5 years later still new info to learn.https://t.co/07nIU5Gnk1 pic.twitter.com/ztO46YCXDY
