The park has a lake (Culler Lake) with fountains and I managed to catch some early morning pictures.

In past years, we have had enough holiday pics for the 10 days before Christmas.
So everybody, please send in your holiday pics from when you were little!
Just Christmas? Nope. All Holidays Matter.
I noted WaterGirl’s request for pictures of jackal Christmases in the past, and figured I should send some in. Since my dad was a professional photographer, there was always a camera around at Christmas time, and many many pictures of me, my siblings, my aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents that I could share. And many of these are Kodachrome slides, thus the colors are still bright and vivid despite the passage of many decades since these were shot. So here are a few of these; no bird pics today, sorry (but you can still find bird pic calendars for sale!). You don’t know any of these people (in fact, some of them are a mystery to me!), but you might still get a kick out of the details of tree decorations, house décor, clothing, presents, facial expressions, etc. Hope you enjoy the trip down memory lane!
My parents were married in the spring of 1948, and my elder sister was born in 1949. So we’ll start with a couple of shots from Christmas 1949, as near as I can tell. But since I wasn’t around yet, your guess is as good as mine!
We often traveled to my Aunt Helen’s house (the eldest of my dad’s 5 sibs) in the tiny town of Montezuma KS on Christmas Day, where my dad’s side of the family would gather, eat a turkey dinner, and open presents. Here is my dad (at left) being gifted with what appears to be a hideous ceramic rooster of some sort, alongside my paternal grandfather (at right) nearly buried in presents. My cousin Duane is halfway in the frame below my grandfather’s haul, and my sister Helen, just about a year old at the time, is at my dad’s feet.

Everybody, please send in your holiday photos! I have one set from Albatrossity for Monday, but we typically do the holiday pics for the 2 weeks before Christmas, so there are 9 more slots to fill. If you have just one or two holiday photos, you can either submit them as an OTR post, or you can send email attachments with an email message. Otherwise submitting the photos using the form is the way to go.
Asking for holiday pics from when you were little, or holiday lights and decorations from he past or the current day!
When I were little, we used to go to downtown Chicago to see all the stores and the city decorations. It was magical.
The next three sets are all from the Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartmuseum), perhaps my favorite in Amsterdam. This set covers my arrival and the first part of the photos from the replica of the Amsterdam.

This round of photos are mostly from the Dutch Masters collection at the Rijksmuseum, the first of several I visited this trip.
This is a detail from Jan Steen’s 1668 painting ‘The Merry Family’. Apparently, it was meant as some sort of warning against this behavior, but they did look like they were having a lot of fun.

A few weeks ago I left New York State for the first time since before the pandemic. I chose to go to Amsterdam for a long week (leave Friday on the redeye, arrive Saturday, depart the following Sunday) ,it’s my favorite city to visit. There are a number of reasons for this: I love the city’s vibe and rhythm, there’s lots of good culture and sights and suchlike to choose from, and I have numerous relatives there (I saw a Tante [aunt], Uncle [The Oom of his name in our family was larger than life both physically and character-wise, so…], and seven cousins of assorted flavor. This first set of 8 covers my first few days.
We start with the Tilted House, which has been there every time I’ve been in Amsterdam. It’s located near Waterlooplein and the Stopera, and houses a cafe.

For years, I follow the weather and relevant websites concerning the predictions and progress of the Spring wildflower bloom in California. One of the better sites.
This year was spectacular due to the historic rainfall, but it is likely that the next year may be even better based on an historic El Nino that is coming. In particular, Death Valley may get an historic superbloom based on the devastating Fall rains that closed the park for a month. Death Valley was not good this year as it is triggered by its own cycle, and the key is some Fall rain. Well, we had epic Fall rains this year.
One of my favorite destinations is the Carrizo Plains in the inland coastal mountain ranges. Its in an obscure location not near anything. The first few pictures are just a taste of what I saw.
