Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

War for Ukraine Day 1,288: A Brief Thursday Night Update

by Adam L Silverman|  September 4, 20258:33 pm| 14 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

It’s been a long week and it’s not even over, so I’m just going to run through the basics tonight.

The cost:

One year ago, a russian missile attack cut short the lives of Yaroslav Bazylevych’s family — his wife Yevheniya and their daughters Yaryna, Daria, and Emilia.

We will not forget or forgive. We owe Yaroslav justice, in loving memory of his loved ones.

Statement by the President of Ukraine during a Joint Press Conference with the President of France

4 September 2025 – 18:53

Dear Emmanuel, dear friend, dear Mr. President!

Dear attendees!

First of all, I thank you for organizing these meetings at such a high level. For our meeting yesterday and the many-hour discussion between our teams about supporting Ukraine, our steps, security guarantees, air defense, and the future of our air fleet. We discussed many issues yesterday and reached many agreements. Thank you for today’s organization, for your attention, for this special moment and very special negotiations.

Today, a meeting of the countries participating in the Coalition of the Willing took place: all of free Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand. I would like to congratulate you – this was the largest meeting so far in terms of the number of participating countries. Congratulations to you on the organization. Once again, Emmanuel, I am very grateful.

Thank you also… I’d like to join Emmanuel in thanking all the leaders who were with us today in Paris: Ursula, President of the European Commission; António, President of the European Council; Alex, President of Finland; Mette, Prime Minister of Denmark; Donald, Prime Minister of Poland; Dick, Prime Minister of the Netherlands; Bart, Prime Minister of Belgium. Also at the meeting was Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy of President Trump. Many leaders and representatives of countries joined online. We thank everyone for their activity, ideas, and – most importantly – their readiness to provide support on the path to peace – now with concrete steps.

We spoke with President Trump. The day before, we held a meeting in Copenhagen in the Ukraine–Nordic–Baltic format. This is also an important format. The key topic for everyone is the same – ending the war as soon as possible through strong actions and decisions, and guaranteeing security for Ukraine. In fact, all our meetings are based on two elements: our security now – meaning support for defense and diplomacy – and long-term security guarantees – what exactly and when must be implemented.

Key points.

First. Everyone agrees that strength for Ukraine means strength for peace. That is why we are actively working to ensure our strength and resilience right now. Everyone can see that Russia rejects every peace initiative. And there is no consent to peace from Putin. There is also a very specific impression after the meetings in China, which Putin will obviously try to use as a kind of permission to continue the war. And overall, through his behavior, Putin tries to demonstrate that pressure does not affect him. But in fact, we believe the situation is fundamentally different. Pressure is working – the situation is becoming increasingly difficult for the Russian economy and for those who trade with Russia. We will continue along this line. Today, we spoke about new sanctions, including secondary sanctions and special trade tariffs that can help.

Second. The Coalition of the Willing is working very actively – the military, politicians, advisors. Significant groundwork has been laid. Our teams have worked for many days and weeks. We now understand what the foundation of real security guarantees should be. The basic framework is in place. We also understand that security guarantees are not about the future, “someday” – they also apply to the situation right now. A strong Ukrainian army is and will remain the central element of security guarantees. Therefore, it is about the capabilities of our army – financing, weapons, training, weapons production. We are providing all of this, and it must be in place a year from now, five years from now, and ten years from now – both in the current conditions of war and to guarantee security afterward, in peacetime. We already have a basis for the plan – regarding forces and specific steps. We are identifying which countries will participate in the various components of security: who will operate on the ground, who can help in the air, who at sea, and who in cyberspace. Those without their own capabilities can contribute financially. This also includes specifics regarding production. We note that European production lines are still not operating at sufficient capacity. But all of this needs to be scaled up – and it is clear how. Volumes must be greater. The pace must be faster. Ukraine itself has significant production capacity today, which is not being used due to shortages and lack of funding. This is indeed significant – almost 60% of all the weapons we use in Ukraine today are produced domestically. Ukrainians are successful at this. I believe they are of high quality. And we must help every European country be successful in one production area or another. Technological leadership is critically important for Europe – it means a healthy industry, enough jobs, sufficient investment and cooperation, and leadership in global competition. Europe must be a leader. And we are promoting this in particular as we build new security guarantees for Ukraine. We are preparing documents on guarantees and determining each country’s investment in security. As Emmanuel said, 26 countries have agreed to provide Ukraine with security guarantees. And I think that today, for the first time in a long while, we have something truly concrete and serious. I congratulate all of us on this. And I congratulate you, Emmanuel, and Keir – as co-chairs of the Coalition of the Willing.

Third. It is important that America is with us. And we are working in many formats – from initiatives such as PURL, which allow the purchase of American weapons, to the United States’ readiness to participate in security guarantees long-term. Today we had a conversation with President Trump. We are grateful for the support. It was a long and detailed discussion about how to push the situation toward peace. We discussed different options. The most important thing is pressure – to force an end to the war through strong measures, including economic ones. The key to peace is depriving Russia’s war machine of money and resources. We also raised the issue of maximum protection for Ukraine’s skies. This is about saving lives. And until peace comes, Ukrainians must not be at the mercy of constant Russian attacks, Russian missiles, Iranian drones. They must not take Ukrainian lives. This is important. And it is possible. We are counting on this program. We agreed on further contacts.

Thank you, Emmanuel.

Glory to Ukraine!

First Lady Zelenska participated in an extended meeting of the Interagency Coordination Council on Mental Health Protection and Provision of Psychological Assistance to Victims of the Armed Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Video followed by write up.

Olena Zelenska Visited the Main Medical Clinical Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Plast Training Center in the Kyiv region

4 September 2025 – 11:52

First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska took part in an extended meeting of the Interagency Coordination Council on Mental Health Protection and Provision of Psychological Assistance to Victims of the Armed Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

Together with Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko, Minister of Health Viktor Liashko, Head of the Coordination Center for Mental Health at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Oksana Zbitnieva, and State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Inna Yashchuk, the President’s wife visited the Main Medical Clinical Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and spoke with its staff about the work of the mental health department.

This is a pilot project, launched at the Medical and Psychological Rehabilitation Department. In almost three years of its operation, more than 2,500 defenders from the Ministry of Internal Affairs system have received help here, including those who survived captivity.

The Department now regularly conducts psychoeducational activities and provides recreation areas as well as a sports ground.

“I thank all the specialists of the Department for physical and mental protection. As both are equally essential for life,” the First Lady said.

In addition, Olena Zelenska, together with Minister of Youth and Sports Matvii Bidnyi, Head of the Coordination Center for Mental Health at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Oksana Zbitnieva, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration Mykola Kalashnyk, and his deputy Zhanna Osypenko, visited the Plast Training Center in Bucha.

This institution is part of the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program “How Are You?” which, in addition to training, hosts workshops, consultations, and art therapy sessions for children, young people, veterans, and their families.

The center’s sports area is also part of the President of Ukraine’s program “Active Parks,” created to ensure that as many Ukrainians as possible can do sports free of charge. Overall, 1,500 sites across different regions of Ukraine have already joined the initiative, with more than 4 million people taking part in various activities.

“Sports and exercise are among the methods recognized by psychologists for coping with stress and anxiety. And every Ukrainian, whether adult or child, can see this for themselves by joining Active Parks, Plast, or other active and meaningful leisure,” the First Lady concluded.

Unsure if she sees it or just makes them feel destined to lose, but not all heroes wear capes. 🫡

2 days ago, they arrested ~ 25 during a small but brave protest.

My friend who accompanied a lawyer to detention centers said that all families present exuded calmness, noted with pride that their children had not missed a day of protests, and even found themselves amused by mocking the regime. 1/

And We're All Wondering Who Could Have Done This!

Ororo give me strength to fly on some zephyr winds and slap a bitch. Anyway, this heffa. Mitch McConnell is worried about Trump being in office.

The world during Donald Trump’s second presidency has entered a period of danger with “certain similarities to the 30s”, according to Mitch McConnell, the veteran Republican former Senate leader.

Consider this your open thread for bitch slapping. Or anecdoting. I don’t judge (I do).

Four years ago, the Marc Elias group opened their doors.  Imagine where we would be without all their (mostly winning) lawsuits protecting our right to vote.

You don’t have to be elected in order to help save democracy.

Each of us has a role to play.

I guess I would have to say the contribution I am making is my work on the political fundraising.

Speaking of which, I know we’re tired and stunned and angry, but we have to keep doing the work.  Can we give Kimberly Pope Adams another shot at winning this time around?

We raised $12,500 for Kimberly Pope Adams in 2023 – we know that Good Kim wouldn’t have gotten within 77 votes of beating Bad Kim without our $12,500 last time, right?

Every day now we get a lesson in how important state government is.

Early voting in Virginia starts in just 3 weeks, and our two VA House candidates can make best use of our funds if they have them before then.   I would like to get our funds to Kimberly Pope Adams, aka Good Kim, within a week, and get our funds to Virgil Thornton the following week.

Donate

What roles have each of you guys chosen for yourselves in this fight to protect everything we thought the U.S. stood for?

How about naming some other national heroes here, besides Marc Elias?  We are seeing every day that you don’t need to be elected to be a leader in this fight for our nation.

GOP Murderers Open Thread: The RFK Jr Hearing

Sen. Mike Crapo, a Republican from Idaho who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, just refused to swear in Robert F. Kennedy Jr. which would have put his testimony to the Senate under oath.

Was not expecting this: Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY), the second highest ranking Republican in the Senate, just told RFK Jr. he is "very concerned" about RFK's leadership and vaccine policies. He's treating him as a hostile witness, asking about ACIP now

The real story here is that Republicans know the only conceivable chance of getting Trump to give a shit about putting a sociopath in charge of public health is to swaddle it in obsequious praise for Trump and try to get him to see said sociopath as somehow diminishing Trump's glory.

WARREN: Did you tell the head of the CDC that if she refused to sign off on your changes to the childhood vaccine schedule, that she had to resign?
RFK Jr: No. I told her she had to resign because I asked her 'are you a trustworthy person?" and she said no
WARREN: This is not what she has said

RFK Jr: I'm not gonna recommend a product for which there's no clinical data. Is that what I should be doing?
WARREN: What you should be doing is honoring your promise you made when you were looking to get confirmed in this job, and that is you promised that you would not take vaccines away

Ron Johnson is having a tantrum about science and says it’s all been “corrupted”.
He is lying about VAERS when he says that the CDC “suddenly” turned against it.
This is utterly and completely false. The CDC has always explained that VAERS CANNOT BE USED TO DRAW CONCLUSIONS ABOUT CAUSALITY.

Senator Young (R, Indiana) talks about LongCOVID. This is a surprise to me. He asks about clinical trials.
RFK Jr. mentions two doctors whose “treatments” have been treated with extreme skepticism by actual scientists. One of them “treats” people with “ongoing symptoms after COVID vaccination”.

RFK Jr: It's gonna be the biggest infusion of federal dollar into rural healthcare in American history
BERNIE SANDERS: Yeah. You know why? Because you're cutting $150b for rural hospitals, you're putting $50b back. That's not an infusion. That's a loss of $100b.

The last few minutes before the break were very hard to sit through.
Numerous false allegations of corruption in science were made by Ron Johnson and enthusiastically agreed with by Kennedy.
I am stating for the record that if this continues, more violence against scientists will occur.

Warnock to RFK jr: "For the first time, we are seeing deaths of children from measles. We haven't seen that in two decades. We're seeing that under your watch. You are a hazard to the health of the American people."

Senator Warnock (D, GA) brings up the CDC shooting. He says prior to the attack the shooter said he was angry about the COVID19 vaccine, are you aware of this?
RFK Jr.: Yes
Warnock: Had you ever been to the CDC as HHS Secretary before the shooting?
RFK Jr.: No

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 12:49 PM

===

Sen Warnock: Did you demand that CDC Director Monarez fire career CDC scientists?
RFK Jr.: Yes
Warnock: Did you tell her to accept the ACIP panel’s recommendations?
RFK Jr.: I told her I didn’t want her to have a role where she signed on to it

What this hearing demonstrates, more than anything else I think, is that RFK and co. don't actually have the popular support for their agenda they're claiming, because they have to constantly hedge and side step and claim that they're not doing what they're doing.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:53 AM

RFK pretty clearly wants to take vaccines away, but it's also clear to him that he can't just say that.

My summary of the RFK Jr. hearing:
The danger he poses to the United States was made clear by Democrats.
Two Republican Senators, Cassidy and Tillis, appear to grasp some of the danger.
I do not believe any action will be taken to address the egregious destruction of HHS by RFK Jr.

I think the chances we have a really serious, preventable outbreak in the next couple of years are rising exponentially, and that's kind of scary.

There’s enough good stuff in this article that I may just use parts of it across multiple posts in the next few days.

On Trump’s Escalating Madness, Epstein, Compromise And The Unsustainable Path He Has Chosen

It often feels like Betty Cracker speaks for me, putting into words what I am thinking about current events but haven’t really been able to sort through completely.  (Thanks, Betty!)

Today, it’s Simon Rosenberg.  I probably spent two hours this morning cruising through substacks, etc and there wasn’t a thing I thought I could bear to write about.

Today’s post is a more of a collection of notes rather than a coherent essay as we all try to asses where we are now after Trump’s terrible August of spiraling madness and physical decline.

I think Trump’s disappearance last week was a significant event, and suggests that he is having significant physical and/or cognitive challenges. As we’ve discussed Trump had not taken a vacation all summer – an odd thing for such an old man in such a demanding job – which I’ve felt was a sign of disquiet and worry in his mind, a desperate need to reverse his declining poll numbers and growing sense that his government is failing, to somehow make Epstein and his horrible past disappear, of the shock of two buddies, Elon and Putin, turning on him. Rather than being a slow month to rest and reset ( as JD Vance viewed it), Trump manically attacked August – the wild, impulsive and destructive tariffs; the red carpet for Putin; the occupation of DC; the firing of the heads of the BLS and DIA and a Fed governor; Kennedy’s medieval assault on our public health; the escalating campaign to steal Congressional seats and make our elections bend the knee to him; the venal harassment of Kilmar Abrego Garcia; a new effort to illegally and unconstitutionally wrest control of federal spending away from Congress; the dark middle of the night loading of young children to traffic them to Guatemala, Uganda or god knows where else…..

Then he just disappeared without any explanation of where he had gone. No “vacation” – which would have been deserved and welcome – no a few days golfing. Just gone. Off camera for a week. After his manic and reckless August it was a bit of a shocker, and does suggest that his health problems – evident to the eye, unable to be AI-ed away – are far more serious than they admit. Then there was this bit of palace infrequent – Vance saying he was fired up and ready to go if anything happened to Trump….

I did rather like the Esquire headline:  Trump’s not dead, but it sounds like Vance wouldn’t mind if he were.

Yes, it’s horrifying to see it all laid out like that, but it’s reminding me of a conversation I had with someone while I was still at the University.  It started out with “I feel stressed but I don’t really know why” and then mentioned this one thing, and another thing, and another thing, and before I knew it, I had laid out 5 or 7 things that were going on,  I hadn’t put it all together until I started rambling, and then I felt much better somehow because of course a person would be really stressed with all that going on!

Anyway, reading this from Simon Rosenberg helped in the same way.  Forget about it, Jake.  It’s crazy town.

Every day.

Powerball jackpot jumps to $1.7 billion after another night without a big winner

— WJTV 12 News (@wjtv.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 1:00 AM

Seems like a metaphor for this week, somehow… Per the Associated Press:

The Powerball jackpot has jumped to an eye-popping $1.7 billion, after yet another drawing passed without a big winner Wednesday.

The numbers selected were: 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69, with the Powerball number being 22.

Since May 31, there have been 41 straight drawings without a big winner.

The next drawing will be Saturday night, with the prize expected to be the third-largest in U.S. lottery history.

Powerball’s terrible odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to generate big jackpots, with prizes becoming ever larger as they repeatedly roll over when no one wins…
