Late Night Open Thread

I’m listening to Little Feat (go figure) and Zappa is next (also go figure).

I also have three strippers and 2 eight-balls of blow, and unless we run out of cigarettes or scotch one of us is guaranteed to hear my wake up call at 7 am so I make it home in time for the Steelers game.

And if I don’t, well, you know. Shit happens.

(There is also the distinct possibility I’m making all of this up for dramatic effect and went out to eat, found nothing exciting, and am just pretending to have a wild social life. Also, too. )

I didn’t mean to suggest that all of my fantasy scenarios involve strippers and cocaine- as anyone who knows me will tell you that is clearly not true. Most of my fantasy scenarios involve the lottery, strippers, and drugs. I apologize for any confusion.

I should probably point out that nearly all of my recent fantasy scenarios involve someone adopting Rosie. And milkshakes.

Sitting in the hotel drinking warmish chardonnay out of a paper cup. Not sure what is on the itinerary tonight, but I’m going to surf the newfangled intertubes and see if I can find some live music somewhere. If there is no live music to be had, I’ll settle for a microbrewery. If that fails, looks like a night of making caustic remarks on right-wing blogs with an assumed name and a fresh IP address.

You gotta have goals and priorities in life.

So, in 2010, while distracting the nation with a smokescreen of trivialities like the creation of  death panels to murder grandma in the name of health care reform and the government take over of a reform of the financial system, that relentless enemy of all things capitalist, Barack Hussein Obama, snuck past an unsuspecting public his real plan:  NASA now leads the government take over of the high ground! Yup, the final frontier itself.

Or not, as today’s New York Times reports.

Last year, the Obama administration pushed through an ambitious transformation for NASA: canceling the Ares I rocket, which was to be the successor to the current generation of space shuttles, and turning to the commercial sector for astronaut transportation.

The story focuses mostly on the work of Sierra Nevada Space Systems, which sounds as if it has done a number of very clever things, including leveraging prior work by NASA on a space-plane design (itself derived from a spy-plane photographed Soviet experiment).  That project had been discarded under the former and not-much-missed administrator Daniel Goldin, but Sierra Nevada’s use of the external shape of the earlier vehicle allows them to grab all the wind test data NASA collected before the original project went poof.

What’s this?  Under Obama’s administration, smart and nimble private companies are aiding the government in the achievement of national goals while seeking profit?

Unpossible.

Next thing you know, Richard Branson will sign up to handle the passanger trade for the new space hoppers.

Oh wait:

Virgin Galactic, the spacecraft division of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin empire, signed on as a strategic partner in December. Among the possible roles that Virgin could play is selling seats on the Dream Chaser.

That dastardly Obama.   You know he’s not a real American because he’s so damn sneaky.

The Human Sacrifice Encouragement Act of 2011

There really isn’t any stopping the extremists in control of the Republican Confederate Party anymore. Every week and almost every day they can be counted upon for some new crazy in their never ending quest to move the Nation backwards as they pursue fantasies of a ‘better time’ that never existed.

These romanticized ‘Good Old Days’ were a time of clear and undisputed White Male Exceptionalism and everybody knew and accepted their roles in society. Rich white men were on top followed by other white men in order of their class. Woman knew their place and had power in any area where the fellas let them play. Foreigners, people of color, LGBT, etc. did not matter. And all of this was blessed by a specially constructed White Male God–a God who oddly enough always wanted to do what these White Males wanted to do–from buying and selling slaves, to child labor, to endless war, to predatory capitalism, to contempt for the poor, to control of women as birthing machines.

And it is hardly surprising that the 112th Congress is not only pursuing a White Male Exceptionalist agenda, but also claiming that each and every piece of Legislation is blessed by a version of a ‘divine’ God that they have carefully constructed in their own image.

Their God is an angry and vengeful God. Their God is a God that demands retribution upon sinners and punishment of all nonbelievers. Their God is a God impressed by violence and a God that demands human sacrifice. And like Jephthah of old, the Republicans Confederates in the 112th Congress intend to keep their vow to their God and ensure that the required human sacrifice is made.

And so it is sadly predictable that they would introduce HR 358, The Human Sacrifice Encouragement Act of 2011.
