As it happened, we only got about a foot of light, fluffy snow here north of Boston, and the snowblower (which is, thank goddess, in the Spousal Unit’s domain) dealt with the accumulation handily. Hope those of you suffering from other weather events — whether Nola’s tornado, California’s mudslides, or just the random insults of freaky February in the Anthropogenic Era — can recover with equal ease!
***********

Good advice from someone who knows — Barney Frank, at Policy.mic, “Here’s how to not waste your time pressuring lawmakers“:

After 32 years in the House of Representatives, here is my advice on how people opposed to President Donald Trump’s assault on our basic values — a majority of those who voted last November — can best influence members of Congress. Done the right way, communications from citizens can have a significant impact on legislators, even when they claim to be immune to “pressure.” (“Pressure,” in legislative jargon, is the expression of views with which legislators disagree, as opposed to “public opinion” — the term used for sentiments that reinforce their own.)

The key to doing it right is being clear about the goal, which is to persuade the Senator or Representative receiving the communication that how he or she votes on the issue in question will affect how the sender will vote the next time the legislator is on the ballot…

Make sure you’re registered to vote — lawmakers check.
Many office holders will check this, especially for people who write to them frequently. Elected officials pay as much attention to those who are not registered to vote as butchers do to the food preferences of vegetarians.

Lawmakers don’t care about people outside of their district…

Your signature — physical or electronic — on a mass petition will mean little.
You are trying to persuade the recipient of your communication that you care enough about an issue for it to motivate your voting behavior. Simply agreeing to put your name on a list does not convey this…

The communication must be individual. It can be an email, physical letter, a phone call or an office visit. It need not be elaborate or eloquent — it is an opinion to be counted, not an essay. But it will not have an impact unless it shows some individual initiative.

Know where your representative stands…

Communicate — even if you and your representative disagree.
…[E]ven where you are represented by people whom you know oppose you on an issue, communicate anyway. Legislators do not simply vote yes or no on every issue. If enough people in a legislator’s voting constituency express strong opposition to a measure to which that legislator is ideologically or politically committed, it might lead him or her to ask the relevant leadership not to bring the bill up. Conflict avoidance is a cherished goal of many elected officials.

Say “thank you.” …

Enlist the help of friends in other districts.
Your direct communication with legislators outside your voting area will have no impact. But you do have friends, relatives, associates etc. Find out who the potentially influenceable legislators are on issues of prime importance to you, think about people you may know in their constituencies, and ask those who share your views to communicate with those who represent them…

Yeah, you say: Obvious! But you can read the whole thing (it’s not long), forward it to your acquaintance who think that Change.org petition is the height of civic involvement, share it on social media for the use of those who aren’t as politically woke as us BJ regulars…

Apart from that, what’s on the agenda as we wrap up another busy busy week?

Open Thread: Jason Chaffetz – A Putz’s Progress

Chaffetz says he & Cummings are "jointly going to send a letter to the White House and Office of Government Ethics for a referral” on Conway

— Alex Moe (@AlexNBCNews) February 9, 2017

Not to defend Conway, but funny how Chaffetz wakes right up when a woman is the one to commit an ethical breach. How about her boss, brah? https://t.co/APmHU69ALq

— The Resisterhood (@resisterhood) February 9, 2017

And then young comer (just ask him!) Jason-in-the-House had a town hall back in Utah, and it… did not go well…

— Salt Lake Tribune (@sltrib) February 10, 2017

Rep. Jason Chaffetz tried to respond to questions, but many of his answers went unheard. The din of the hostile and harassing audience that filled the 1,000 seats of a high school auditorium Thursday night drowned him out.

“Explain yourself,” they roared over him.

When the congressman did get a chance to speak, the crowd often didn’t like what he had to say. And he knew it.

The town-hall meeting was 75 minutes of tense exchanges between Chaffetz and residents from across the state. They were frustrated by the Utah Republican’s refusal to investigate President Donald Trump’s potential conflicts of interest. They doggedly pursued him for his initiatives to transfer or sell public lands. They questioned his position on immigration and refugees.

And that’s was only half of the largely liberal crowd.

About 1,500 people stood outside Brighton High School, too far back to make the cut, their signs reading, “Do your job” and “America is better than this.”…

In the auditorium, at least 20 seats were empty. A fire marshal opened the event by noting that those would not be filled “because of the situation outside.” Chaffetz heard the announcement and paced across the bare stage, acknowledging the lack of space and holding the microphone at his side when the noise got to be too much…

Late Night Open Thread

Even though we didn’t get much snow and it had melted off the roads by four pm, last night until about 10 am this morning and then again all night tonight, my internet has been down. I’m wondering if this guy had anything to do with it:

He looks like he has been up to something, doesn’t he?

I swear, I get up to go to the bathroom and one of the animals takes my seat every time.

Open Thread: Remind Me, Who Voted Jared Kushner for President?

by Anne Laurie|  February 10, 201712:55 am| 36 Comments

Somehow amid all today's insane stories I missed that the Mexican Foreign Minister helped write Trump's wall speech: https://t.co/9m5Nan4jkS

— Josh Barro (@jbarro) February 10, 2017

From the CBS article:

… When Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray came to the White House in January, on the same day that Mr. Trump was to sign the Executive Order, Jared Kushner, a senior White House adviser and the president’s son-in-law, showed him the speech Mr. Trump was going to deliver that day at the Homeland Security Department. Videgaray was horrified, according to the Mexican officials, and deemed the speech a non-starter.

If the remarks were not changed, they would likely drive the two countries, whose relationship Videgaray was there to try and redress, even further apart. Such a speech would also do little to help President Pena’s approval ratings in his own country. Kushner suggested they re-write the speech together to make it less damaging…

Kushner and Videgaray changed what they could, casting a more positive light on the future of the U.S.-Mexico relationship. Then the two of them then went into the Oval Office so Kushner could brief Mr. Trump on the changes. The president angrily threw up his hands, wondering why he should read the new version. With Videgaray standing by, Mr. Trump was ultimately convinced to make the changes.

However, a White House official disputed the Mexican officials’ version of events, telling CBS News, “This is not an accurate account of their meeting and they did not ‘rewrite’ portions of the speech.”…

According to Mexican officials, Kushner is now handling everything between the two countries, and personally trying to keep the relationship from disintegrating further…

Anybody doesn’t think the source of this juicy tidbit was someone whose name rhymes with ‘Kared Jushner’, please email me your banking details so that I can connect you with a Nigerian prince. Remember when America was a country where we could joke about national leaders being led by the nose by their unelected, unqualified kinfolk?

In other foreign news, seems like President Xi just reminded old man Trump how much of his IOUs they’re holding…

DHS Sec John Kelly tells me administration is thinking abt making people who want 2 come to US hand over cell phones & internet passwords.

— Rachel Martin (@rachelnpr) February 8, 2017

Speaking of handing over one’s phone to a higher authority… Now that Kremlinology has become another Russian import we could’ve done just as well without (THANKS, REPUBS!), there’s a story going around that yesterday’s breaking-news Trump-tweet decrying Nordstrom’s cruel abuse of poor little Princess Ivanka wasn’t even written by the guy whose name appeared on the header. If true, then Ivanka and/or (more likely, IMO) son-in-law Jared Kushner is responsible for letting the world know that his wife is “a great person — always pushing [Daddy] to do the right thing”…

The official @POTUS account just retweeted Trump’s attack on @Nordstrom. That’s a taxpayer funded account being used to benefit Trump’s kid. pic.twitter.com/vIUPxGze8X

— Christina Wilkie (@christinawilkie) February 8, 2017

According to White House schedule, this tweet was sent 20 minutes into his daily intelligence briefing. https://t.co/BoilJ6cV6L

— Bill Weir (@BillWeirCNN) February 8, 2017

@BillWeirCNN It wasn't sent by him. You really need to look at metadata.

— Ari Herzog (@ariherzog) February 8, 2017

It is creepily apt if this was sent by Ivanka. And it makes sense it'd be her, since it's about protecting the value of her brand.

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) February 8, 2017

@DanaHoule Yes see https://t.co/Dn20oyaFAR

— (((Will Cubbison))) (@wccubbison) February 8, 2017

… which, I guess: Happy early V-Day, honey! (And the cynics say romance is dead.)

On the one hand: Good to know, if true, that Daddy Dearest wasn’t distracted during his security briefing by worries about his kids’ business opportunities. On the other hand: If this were any other country in the world, what would the Very Serious Pundits say about a president with this much power allowing his (inexperienced, incompetent) offspring to make official statements in his name, with or without his permission in advance?

Three branches was really a smart call by the founders. https://t.co/cxgrPJx1gu

— Jason Kander (@JasonKander) February 9, 2017

Hey, remember Cole’s Missouri pick, Jason Kander?

Kander had some time on his hands after the election, so he’s started a new gig…

The fight for voting rights has been waged in courts of law. Today it expands to the court of public opinion. https://t.co/GWAKWAjFRQ

— Let America Vote (@Let_AmericaVote) February 7, 2017

… “Voting in our country has never been easy, and unfortunately it’s never been guaranteed for everyone,” Kander said. “But through the work of brave civil rights leaders, some of whom died for the cause, in the early 2000s we got to a point where most, but still not all, people who wanted to vote could do so. Today, that progress is in danger as laws targeting low-income and minority voters continue popping up across the country. Let America Vote will make the case for voting rights by exposing the real motivations of those who favor voter suppression laws. For the first time, politicians intent on denying certain Americans the right to vote will first have to consider the political consequences.”

Jason Kander saw the mounting threat of voter suppression first hand when he fought against extreme voter photo identification proposals each of his four years as Missouri’s Secretary of State. Kander argued that over 200,000 legally eligible Missouri voters might not be able to vote if the laws passed, and that there has never been a case of voter impersonation fraud in Missouri, but proponents of the law would not be dissuaded. In 2016, in perhaps the most egregious and transparent act of voter intimidation the state has seen in decades, a local election authority stationed police officers outside polling places in minority neighborhoods. What is happening in Missouri is happening around the country…

Let America Vote, a 527 organization, will also team up with groups that share the mission of preventing voter suppression. iVote President Ellen Kurz will join Let America Vote as a member of the Board, and Kander will join iVote’s Board. Kander will also be joining the Board of Priorities USA in support of Every Citizen Counts, their initiative focused on voting rights litigation and statehouse lobbying. Priorities Chairman Guy Cecil will serve on Let America Vote’s Board.

ICYMI: @JasonKander teams up with @joshearnest, @danpfeiffer, @jonfavs, @WhitfordBradley to fight voter suppressionhttps://t.co/xYOvXuhrbc

The Maskirovka Slips Part XI: What’s Going On With the Investigations? Updated

Several of you (Jeffro) have been asking me (Jeffro) about what is going on with the counterintelligence and Congressional investigations into Russian connections to the President, his immediate circle of advisors – both campaign and now in the new Administration, and his campaign. There has not been a lot of reporting on this. Today, David Corn wrote a story about how the topic had dropped way off in news coverage. Apparently Congressional Democrats had noticed and have decided to shed a little light on the subject.

House Democrats finally take bold action on the Trump-Russia scandal. https://t.co/GN7H4xtJjr pic.twitter.com/zUp0h85JkM

It will be interesting to see what fruits are born from Congressman Nadler’s efforts.

Update at 10:05 PM EST:

The Washington Post has just reported that LTG (ret) Flynn discussed US sanctions on Russia with Russian Ambassador before the inauguration. At the point that he did this he was a private citizen, not a political appointee.

Flynn discussed sanctions with Russian envoy before Trump took office, despite denials, officials say https://t.co/oInkACWdDK
