Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Giving up is unforgivable.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Come on, man.

In after Baud. Damn.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

GOP Luzers Open Thread: Malevolent Leprechaun Tests Water, Finds It Cold & Unsympathetic

by Anne Laurie|  December 5, 20189:26 pm| 60 Comments

Sessions hints he's done with politics: “I've been clearing my brain. I think that's a fair statement,” he said when asked if he misses the Senate. “I could go back and spend time in the woods. I’ve got 10 grandchildren”

— Burgess Everett (@burgessev) December 5, 2018

He got the chance to hurt so many of Those People — not-whites, immigrants, anyone younger or hipper — and then it was all ripped away. And yet, for some reason, there is no sympathy for the plight of Jeff Sessions!

… The former attorney general and Alabama senator said in an interview on Wednesday that he doesn’t miss being a senator and won’t decide on a run anytime soon. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) is seen as the most vulnerable incumbent on the ballot in two years — and Sessions is viewed as a prime candidate to beat him.

But, after enduring months of attacks from President Donald Trump for recusing himself from the Russia probe and being forced to leave his attorney general perch after the midterms, Sessions sounds eager to decompress…

Sessions didn’t have a general election challenger when he last ran in 2014, though he might face a GOP primary challenge if he decides to challenge Jones.

At least at this moment, though, that looks like a long shot. Sessions has told former colleagues that running for the Senate could be seen as a demotion after serving in Trump’s Cabinet.

Write your own snark about that ‘demotion’ line.

“No, I mean no,” he said when asked if he missed the place. Says he’s in no hurray to make an announcement. Also defended Whitaker, raised doubts on criminal justice reform

I think he's going to a farm upstate where he can run and run. https://t.co/1FRdZQrWYf

Watching Operation Finale, where they had the right idea and shot Nazis.

Reposting from yesterday.

As you know, we are working on a new website, and a crew of longtime members of the blogetariat have been helping me see things through the eyes of the reader and coordinating the redesign. They have put together a comprehensive list of what we want from the “new” site, and are currently in the process of reaching out to web developers for bids. Thus, I have been informed that now is the time for the site fundraiser.

We will let this run for two weeks (and then again in January), with another updated post every day or so. As always, the paypal thing is always to the right, and should you do your Christmas shopping on Amazon, click through the link to the right and the website cuts a minute commission. Should you choose to not want to use paypal, email me and I will send you a snail mail address.

In what I consider the best news of the year, CafePress is once again doing calendars, so the BJ calendar will be available for purchase that way instead of having to go through the sheer hell we went through last year.

In other good news, the Balloon Man is coming back.

Russiagate Open Thread: Mueller Uses Flynn As An Object Lesson

by Anne Laurie|  December 5, 20185:08 pm| 93 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Republicans in Disarray!, Russiagate, "Lock Her Up!!"

the unspoken thing in the Flynn memo recommending no prison time is to tell Manafort and tons of others 'this coulda been you brah'

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) December 5, 2018

And now the mainstream media pick up what mere bloggers were gloating yesterday. Vanity Fair, “Mueller’s Heavily Redacted Memo on Michael Flynn Is a Warning to Trumpworld”:

President Donald Trump’s mafioso message praising Roger Stone for his “guts” and urging him to stay strong—a move that legal experts, including George Conway, have argued could amount to witness tampering—was swiftly answered by Robert Mueller on Tuesday night, when the special counsel released a long-awaited sentencing memo on Michael Flynn. Citing Flynn’s “substantial assistance” in the ongoing Justice Department probe, the special counsel recommended a light sentence for the disgraced retired Army general—one that may not include any time behind bars. “A sentence at the low end of the guideline range—including a sentence that does not impose a term of incarceration—is appropriate and warranted,” the memo reads…

The clearest takeaway from the sentencing memo is that Mueller places a premium on cooperation. Flynn’s one charge of lying to investigators carries a maximum of five years in prison, but the special counsel set the ceiling for his misdeeds at just six months. “The usefulness of the defendant’s assistance is connected to its timeliness,” the memo reads. “The defendant began providing information to the government not long after the government first sought his cooperation.”…

Though he has frequently predicted his own indictment, Stone has said he has not been contacted by the special counsel. If he is, perhaps he will reconsider the strategy he laid out in his Sunday interview, where he declared, “There’s no circumstance under which I would testify against the president.” Flynn’s sentencing sends a clear signal that Mueller is prepared to reward cooperation with leniency—a message even longtime Trump fixer and lawyer Michael Cohen seems to have picked up on. And Trump’s tweets are hardly a guarantee that a presidential pardon is on the table.

(Yeah, let’s don’t all get our hopes up too high about ol’ Rog.)

And in USAToday, NeverTrump conservative Tom Nichols adds helpfully/hopefully, “Mueller’s redactions suggest more prosecutions are in the works and he is not ready to wrap up his investigation of an unprecedented national scandal.”

I enjoy this Special Counsel dig at the rogues gallery of Trump/Russia suspects.

[Flynn's] "record of military and public service distinguish him from every other person who has been charged as part the SCO’s investigation."

Trump Continues to Say the Quiet Parts Out Loud

by John Cole|  December 5, 20185:00 pm| 33 Comments

This post is in: The Republican Crime Syndicate

We’ll just file this under fiscal conservatism:

Since the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump’s aides and advisers have tried to convince him of the importance of tackling the national debt.

Sources close to the president say he has repeatedly shrugged it off, implying that he doesn’t have to worry about the money owed to America’s creditors—currently about $21 trillion—because he won’t be around to shoulder the blame when it becomes even more untenable.

The friction came to a head in early 2017 when senior officials offered Trump charts and graphics laying out the numbers and showing a “hockey stick” spike in the national debt in the not-too-distant future. In response, Trump noted that the data suggested the debt would reach a critical mass only after his possible second term in office.

“Yeah, but I won’t be here,” the president bluntly said, according to a source who was in the room when Trump made this comment during discussions on the debt.

This is actually the honest position of most Republicans. They’ll pretend they care about the budget, but that’s just so they can rob the poors to give more tax cuts to their buddies. At least Trump is being honest about the smash and grab.

Pet Calendar Pictures

by John Cole|  December 5, 20183:47 pm| 60 Comments

This post is in: Readership Capture

I spent the last hour forwarding pet pictures you submitted to our delightful calendar maker, because it needed to be done and because when I am on the reboot of “This is your life” I want to spend the entire presentation wondering why I didn’t just shoot myself in the face at the age of thirty, and I have some thoughts:

1.) I like your pets more than you.
2.) Some of you need a remedial course in photography and I will never take shit from any of you again about my picture taking skills.
3.) Some of you need a remedial course in how to insert images into an email.
4.) Some of you need to be dragged publicly for sending a 4 megabyte .png file that takes up the entire fucking screen and then loops around onto the second monitor.
5.) Special props to you special few who sent me fucking videos of your pets to put in the… calendar.
6.) I pronounce .gif with a soft g so it sounds like the peanut butter just to piss off the nerds.
7.) I like your pets more than you.

Also, one of you used to have a cat named McLovin, a tuxedo, and I miss him.

I’m pretty sure I am scarred for life by this administration. Any time I am aware from the internet or news for an extended period, about once every ten minutes I get this ball of anxiety in my stomach as I think “oh god what has fuckboy done now while I was not paying attention?”
