Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The willow is too close to the house.

Republicans do not trust women.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

In after Baud. Damn.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

No one could have predicted…

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Losing loser keeps losing

Losing loser keeps losing

Breaking from The Post:

A federal appeals court on Friday rejected President Trump’s request for an emergency injunction to overturn the certification of Pennsylvania’s election results.

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals said that the Trump campaign’s challenge of a U.S. district court’s decision had “no merit.”

The court’s sharply worded opinion was written by Judge Stephanos Bibas, who was appointed to the court by Trump.

“Charges of unfairness are serious. But calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here,” Bibas wrote.

Emphasis mine. I haven’t been following the sore loser litigation closely, but I think the only concession Team Trump has won out of dozens of tries was that Republican poll watchers in one state were permitted to advance four feet toward ballot processors, i.e., they’d been told to stay 10 feet back but were allowed to move to within six feet. Miranda v. Arizona it was not.

The shitgibbon and his sycophants have essentially pivoted from trying to prove anything (because they can’t) to asserting that it’s preposterous that Biden got 80M+ votes without inspiring boat parades and rolling pickup truck rallies. The answer is blindingly obvious — something related to the “Italian food vs. tire rims and anthrax” entrée dilemma famously proposed on this blog.

But to bastardize another quote, this time Upton Sinclair, “It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary the survival of his gigantic fucking ego depends on his not understanding it.” So, the losing will continue.

Open thread.

RIP Ginny Cole, the Goodest Girl

by John Cole|  November 27, 202012:38 pm| 132 Comments

This post is in: Absent Friends, RIP

RIP Ginny Cole, the Goodest Girl

My parents had to put down Ginny this morning, who died of a particularly aggressive cancer of the blood. I had not mentioned this to you all because there was so much else bad going on in the world, but over the past few months she had developed bleeding tumors all over her body, and twice had to have surgery to remove them. This is a particularly nasty cancer that does not respond to chemo or radiation, and Ginny quite never got over the second surgery, and even as she was recovering more tumors were appearing.

Harry, our family vet, came over and helped ease Ginny out of her pain this morning, and suffice it to say mom and dad are devastated, so keep them in your thoughts. It’s hard to imagine life without Ginny- she was just such a big presence crammed into a tiny little body, with dozens of personality quirks that made her an absolute delight to know.

She will be very, very missed.

Look at these black panthers…

From cain:

Respite Open Thread: Cain's Kittehs 5

The one with the bowtie is Khush, and the other one without the collar is Lava. They are named after the twin sons of Sri Rama, the hero of the Ramayana and his queen Sita. Of course, I’m named after Sri Rama, so it makes sense that my fur children would have those names. :-)

TaMara here – I sure hope Lava is reading Balloon-Juice and is of age to drink! I usually adopt whatever cat decides to choose me, but I really do miss my black panthers and I’m hoping maybe one will adopt me next.

I get emails!

SiubhanDuinne sent this along when I post about Obama’s book. I loved it. We will revisit the book in early December after everyone who was fighting over copies has a chance to read theirs. I’m four chapters in (I only listen in the car, because otherwise I get distracted and miss the good stuff) and I’m really enjoying it. I like the campaign and policy wonk stuff!

And Evap made election night goodies and sent me photos. I had planned to post them the day Biden was declared the winner, but things have been a bit hectic around that. Now that the GSA has finally acknowledged what we’ve known since Nov 4, I’m sharing.

Respite Open Thread: Cain's Kittehs 3

I think that catches you up on everything everyone has sent me (I do have one more political cartoon, but it needs a “darker” post for that).

Bixby and I had a moment yesterday – he pulled me off my feet on a walk! And then dragged me. In the six years we’ve been together that’s the third time he’s done that. We are all fine, but it does mean a few weeks of retraining since our trust bond has been broken. You don’t walk 280 lbs of dogs without training and trust. :-( I’m trying not to be cranky with him…but…

I have a friend who is about all of 5′ and her mastiff did the same thing to her about a week ago. I think the pandemic/shutdowns are making everyone edgy and the dogs a little reactive. But still no excuse.

With that, here’s a fresh open thread.

Assassination Attempt On Iran’s “Father Of Nuclear Program”

by Cheryl Rofer|  November 27, 202010:04 am| 145 Comments

This post is in: Iran, Rofer on International Relations, Rofer on Nuclear Issues

There has just been an assassination attempt on Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Iran’s leading nuclear scientist. He is seen within Iran in a role much like that of Robert Oppenheimer in the United States.

Israel has assassinated other Iranian nuclear scientists and is thus the prime suspect. Bibi Netanyahu has mentioned Fakhrizadeh by name.

Israel, and the Trump administration, have been trying to break the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) so that it cannot be revived. The JCPOA froze and even pushed back Iran’s nuclear weapons program, putting it under greater international scrutiny than any nuclear program in the world.

But war with Iran is what Mike Pompeo and other Trump advisors have wanted. It is also what Netanyahu wants, as long as the losses are primarily America’s.

On top of the devastation of the Iraq War, a war with Iran would tear the Middle East apart. Those desiring war imagine that it would destroy Iran without extreme damage to themselves. Pompeo has mentioned the Rapture, which requires such a war to ensure his personal salvation.

But the warmongers have been unsuccessful in provoking Iran into leaving the JCPOA. After the US left the agreement, Iran has taken reversible steps toward a more robust nuclear program and has made clear that these are in response to US actions. The other participants in the JCPOA have held firm.

The attack on Fakhrizadeh is an enormous provocation, most likely an escalation by those who want Iran to leave the JCPOA so that there is justification for war. As usual, early reports are confused. Current tweets follow.

Update: Official sources now say Fakhrizadeh is dead.

A sincere and personal thanks to our indispensible WaterGirl, whose holiday labors gave all of us so much joy… and gave me a chance to spend the day mostly loafing, which was wonderful!

Back in this ugly reality… I’ll admit my first thought, upon seeing the top pic, was Bastid better not have tried to sell off the Resolute Desk. More likely, though, either Melania booted him out of the Oval Office to finish her holiday decorating, or else the NSA transition team is already busy tearing the office down to the studs, looking for bugs (including the kind spread by fecal contamination & long-neglected fast food detritus).

On The Road – Steve from Mendocino – Mendocino, Comptche Chapter

Steve from Mendocino

Comptche is about 30 minutes from Mendocino, up in the hills beyond the overcast.  It’s 10 degrees cooler during the winter and 10 degrees warmer during the summer.  There are fewer than 200 people, most spread out in the hills on 40-acre parcels. During the late 60’s and early 70’s there were a number of communes situated near Comptche, and a good bit of marijuana grown (Comptche Crippler, anyone?).  Traditionally, logging and farming sustained the community.  The old families are mostly Republican, but with the influx of hippies, politics shifted hard left.  For shopping, employment, and socializing, the area orients toward coastal Mendocino instead of east toward Booneville or Ukiah.

On The Road - Steve from Mendocino - Mendocino, Comptche Chapter 7

The entrance to Comptche from the coast on a rainy spring morning.  The old school sign with the bullet hole was replace a number of years ago with a wonderful dayglow plastic sign that fits in well with the totally fake redwoods, 100-year-old orchards, and high fashion rural dandies that is Comptche.  (Sarcasm, for those who might think I’m serious.  Comptche is super laid back and the opposite of plastic).
