Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

People are weird.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

“Alexa, change the president.”

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

The revolution will be supervised.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

In my day, never was longer.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

More Iowa Caucus Open Thread (with DMR Results Link)

Actual Iowa voter:

ME: Please don't take the caucus as holy writ
POLITICAL MEDIA: y tho
ME: Unless you're an activist, participating is like a root canal, which impacts type of voter & turnout
PM: sweet, activists are quotable
ME: It's impossible to parse
PM: you mean I can write any story I want? https://t.co/YV6RewDSTd

— The Mall Krampus (@cakotz) February 3, 2020

While I’m sure there will be breathless coverage on every channel today and tonight, if you would like to forgo the punditry and spin just click on the link below tonight to see the results. #IACaucus #IowaCaucuses https://t.co/mJlnn82vz4

— Maya Contreras (@mayatcontreras) February 3, 2020

Right now, there are a total of *no* results on the DMRegister‘s tidy results page.

The NYTimes has any amount of breathless explanations of its elaborate ‘four needle’ wall-to-wall predictions coverage, where they are hoping bigly that Trump’s preferred opponent will sweep.

I’m gonna stay with the DMRegister, and I suggest y’all do the same.

The idea that there’s more than one way to determine the winner of Iowa was invented roughly three days ago and it deserves to be called out for the ratfucking it is. It’s designed to sow discord and create Dems In Disarray stories at the cost of the winner’s legitimacy.

— The Grinch Who Stole Selzer (@agraybee) February 3, 2020

Remember the 2012 Iowa where the lead shifted from Cain to Bachmann to Ron Paul before settling on Santorum for the win? Good times.

Yes, but if they don't do that then they won't be able to hit the downtown bars after filing https://t.co/OmXNBeAQjh

2016 PTSD explains everything about the race to date and I don't see that changing after Iowa. No Dem is going to be remotely comfortable until 1/20/21, if then. https://t.co/g6SXtidGTA

The Raucous Caucus, Which Is Not In Caracas, Open Thread

SEAL IOWA.png

Looks like we could use a new open thread.

Just a quick note, they have changed the way that they are reporting the Iowa Caucus results tonight.

They will report the initial result. Then the final result after the second round when caucus goers redistribute themselves after their first choices don’t make the 15% cut off threshold. Finally, they will report the preliminary delegate count. The preliminary delegate count is not the final delegate count and that could change, which would be a fourth result, when the Iowa Democratic Party holds its state convention. As a result, we could get three different winners tonight with a fourth potential winner a couple of months down the road.

Obligatory!

This is going to be a shit show.

Kitten Rescue Bleg – San Francisco Area

by Anne Laurie|  February 3, 20205:18 pm| 23 Comments

This post is in: Cat Blogging, Pet Rescue

Emergency plea from commentor Tulip:

From Starry in the R barn at Hossmoor. As many know, in November, 3 tiny kittens were found with their mom living by the covered arena at Hossmoor. Boarders caught two of the kittens who were distressed and hungry.

We contacted “Community Concern for Cats” (a non profit) for help. We were able to catch the mom and third (orange) kitten. CC4C has been great and handled spay, neuter and shots for all 3 (normally $400- $600 per cat at a vets office). They are all tested for FIV/LEUK and are negative. Perfect Kitties!

The person fostering can no longer keep them. The grey and white female and the orange male kitten need permanent homes very soon. They are healthy beautiful little kitties and ready to go. They have been living /w other cats and do great with other cats.

The tri colored female kitty has a hind leg injury (tho she is not aware of her handicap and is actually the boss of the three kittens). This kitty however needs surgery that CC4C vets will handle in the near future. She is also available.

Please get the word out about these wonderful kittens. They can’t stay with the foster any longer and need homes soon.

If you’re interested, know someone who might be interested, or have suggestions for another foster, leave a comment below. Or contact me directly ([email protected]) and I’ll pass your message on to Tulip.

SharpieGate and the Politicization of NOAA

It’s been my great pleasure to have discovered an astronomer on twitter this past year who lives in my backyard (not literally, I don’t have room for his goats). I’m sure I followed one of you jackals to him.

https://twitter.com/BadAstronomer/status/1155179248421756928?s=20

He has a weekly free newsletter (as well as a weekly paid newsletter for you hardcore astronomy buffs).

This week he discussed Hurricane/Alabama Sharpiegate (just in time for jokes about KC, MO map jokes).

“HELP!!!” Internal #SharpieGate Emails Show Government Officials Freaked Out Over Trump’s “Doctored” Hurricane Map

Got to team up w/@JasonLeopold on this one @BuzzFeedNews. The FOIA emails are 👀 https://t.co/17HczRpx07

— Zahra Hirji (@Zhirji28) February 1, 2020

Seems the scientists were none too pleased with NOAA coming down on their forecaster for correcting the criminal-in-chief’s map work.

“For an agency founded upon and recognized for determining scientific truths, trusted by the public, and responsible in law to put forward important science information, I find it unconscionable that an anonymous voice inside of NOAA would be found to castigate a dutiful, correct, and loyal NWS Forecaster who spoke the truth,” Craig McLean, then the agency’s assistant administrator, wrote in a Sept. 7 email to other top-level government officials.

A day later, NOAA issued an unsigned statement backing Trump over its forecasters who suggested the president was wrong when he said Hurricane Dorian would hit Alabama. That led to an internal revolt and a flurry of emails between top officials who disavowed the statement.

“What concerns me most is that this Administration is eroding the public trust in NOAA for an apparent political recovery from an ill timed and imprecise comment from the President.”

“Please reassure those of us who serve the public, and do so with commitment and humility that we are not mere pawns in an absurd game. Please do not allow the science and support that we perform on behalf of the American public to be tossed into the trash heap by political expediencies. Please support us and stand with us. Please,” wrote Gary Shigenaka, a senior NOAA biologist, in an email to acting administrator Neil Jacobs.

“You have no idea how hard I’m fighting to keep politics out of science,” Jacobs replied. “We are an objective science agency, and we won’t and never will base any decisions on anything other than science.”

The article has screenshots of the actual emails and a link to all the emails regarding #sharpiegate

Some Context for Super Bowl Ads

If you watched the ads last night, you saw a couple that I thought needed a little more context.

The first one was a Verizon ad, where Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn talked to some of the first responders who helped save his life after a terrible accident. Coach Lynn seems appropriately grateful and I have nothing but respect for all the people who helped save his life, so it’s nice of Verizon to highlight them. But let’s not forget that part of the reason Verizon is running this ad is that Verizon throttled firefighters in California in late Summer 2018.

The other ad is for Mexican Avocados. In the past couple weeks in the state of Michoacán, two workers at a monarch butterfly preserve have been murdered:

Officials in the state of Michoacán said they were unsure if the two deaths were linked – or related to the men’s work in the butterfly reserve. The state has seen a rising tide of violence in recent years, and the region around the monarch butterfly reserve has been rife with illegal logging, despite a ban imposed to protect the monarchs, which winter in the pine- and fir-covered hills.

Some illegal clearcutting is also carried out to allow for the planting of avocado orchards – one of Mexico’s most lucrative crops and an important part of Michoacán’s economy.

The deaths again called attention to the disturbing trend in Mexico of environmental defenders being killed as they come into conflict with developers or local crime groups, who often have political and police protection.

That last story really bugged me. What kind of animal kills people trying to preserve butterflies?

Open thread for the impeachment trial avoiders.
