You Take the Good, You Take the Bad…

You Take the Good, You Take the Bad...

JD thinks that school shootings have “become a fact of life” and schools are “soft targets” so we need to turn our schools into even more prison-like structures.  (Note that JD’s boss was almost killed by a bullet from an AR-15, despite some of the best protection in the world, and he and JD both address outdoor crowds from a bulletproof aquarium, so that’s a fact of life, but I digress.)

Let’s look at some other facts.  First, the Georgia shooter’s dad had terrible judgment:

  • It’s been widely reported that he bought the AR-15 his boy used in his killing spree after police had visited him out of concern over threats that the kid had made.  But did you know the family was evicted in 2022?  Its not clear whether it was over money or over them being assholes, but if it was for money, what kind of judgment do you have to spend AR-15 money if you can’t pay the rent?
  • This poor boy had been begging for mental health counseling for months, according to his aunt.  No money or time for that in this family to actually help the kid — they spent all of that at the gun store.

Teenagers, of course, have access to other possibly deadly tools, like cars, but in those cases we protect ourselves from the terrible judgment of dysfunctional families by making sure the kid passes a drivers’ test, and that the vehicle they’re driving has insurance.  It’s a fact of life that something far more deadly than a car is routinely provided by shitty families to their fucked up kids, with none of the safeguards.

Another fact of life is that even those who are injured, or even the uninjured, in the shooting are deeply affected by it.

  • Remember the horrible slaughter of some Amish children in their rural Pennsylvania school?  Well, the youngest victim of that shooting died on Tuesday.  She made it to 23, and was 6 years old when she was shot.  She was the most severely wounded survivor.  She lived in “a wheelchair and unable to talk, fed through a tube and requiring constant care. She also suffered seizures, at times severe.”  The best healthcare in the world, if you can afford it, can save almost anyone who makes it to the hospital alive, but that doesn’t mean they’ll have much of a life afterwards.
  • One of the teachers who was ruthlessly murdered in Georgia was a football coach and sounds like a great guy.  He left the classroom during the shooting — the students believe he did it to protect them (Uvalde PD, take note).  He was shot and tried to crawl back to the classroom.  His students dragged him back in and locked the door.  Those kids will need years of therapy to overcome that trauma, if that’s even possible.

And the god damned, constant active shooter drills are a traumatizing fact of life. I was at a concert in Rochester last year and ran into some of my daughter’s friends.  They were with a young woman in her mid-20s, and standing far from the stage, near an exit.  That’s because this woman was deathly afraid of being the victim of a shooter, and wanted to be able to flee if something happened.  Active shooter drills are part of children’s lives from kindergarten forward, just like fire drills, but I can’t even remember the last time I heard about a child dying in a fire in a school.  If some kids did die in a fire, it would be an undeniable fact of life that there would be an investigation and changes would be made.

Yesterday, Walz likened listening to a Trump speech to hearing the next screenplay for Mad Max.  That’s the hellscape Trump’s running mate wants us to accept — prison schools staffed by cops with nothing but time on their hands who won’t protect the kids when the chips are down anyway.  We are not allowed to legislate reasonable protection from the worst among us, the disturbed kids of the terrible parents who over and over (Newtown, Michigan, etc.) have shown the most awful judgment when it comes to buying their kids killing machines.  We can’t even ask for insurance and licensing, because all these gun humpers know that no sane insurance company would insure their precious plastic AR-15 Jesus.  Those are the current facts of life, but for once I have just a little hope that an election might change them.

On The Road – Elma – Iceland, long delayed, part three

Elma

My excursion form Akureyri took us to the GeoSea Thermal Baths. The water in these baths came from a thermal source several miles away. It is too hot for bathing coming out of the ground, but after being piped to the shore of the fjord and mixing with sea water, it was VERY nice

Late Night Open Thread: The Arlington Cemetery Assault Team

SCOOP: NPR has ID'd the two Trump campaign staffers involved in an altercation at Arlington National Cemetery last week that Trump insists did not happen.

One of them is a deputy campaign manager.

My first thought was: The Trump campaign finally figured out which two staffers could most easily be sacrified… and, frankly, this story doesn’t really change that impression:

One of two staffers involved in the altercation at Arlington National Cemetery is a deputy campaign manager for Donald Trump’s reelection bid, NPR has learned. The former president insisted this week the incident did not happen, highlighting a growing disconnect between the messaging of the candidate and his campaign. NPR is identifying both staffers after the campaign’s conflicting responses to the incident last week outside Section 60 of the cemetery, where many casualties of Iraq and Afghanistan are buried.

The two staffers, according to a source with knowledge of the incident, are deputy campaign manager Justin Caporale and Michel Picard, a member of Trump’s advance team.

Caporale is a one time aide to former first lady Melania Trump who left the White House to work for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis before returning to the Trump campaign. He was also listed as the on-site contact and project manager for the Women for America First rally in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021 where Trump urged the crowd to “stop the steal” before some of them stormed the U.S. Capitol…

After NPR first reported the altercation last week, campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said they were “prepared to release footage” of the incident, and attacked the Arlington employee as someone “clearly suffering from a mental health episode.” Cheung also said they were granted access to have a photographer present, and pointed to a statement from Gold Star family members that invited Trump to attend the ceremony…

The Army released a statement last Thursday acknowledging that a cemetery employee “was abruptly pushed aside” and the campaign was warned ahead of time of the prohibition against photography and political activities at Arlington. The Army said the cemetery employee tried to de-escalate the situation after she was pushed, in hopes of not upsetting the Gold Star families in attendance.

The Army said a police report of the incident was filed, but that the employee had declined to press charges, and that the Army considered the matter closed, but added that “the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked …

Seems Like Cake Might Be In Order

One way or another, it sees like cake might be in order tomorrow!

Either to celebrate or to drown our sorrows.

It feels to me like sentencing for these crimes is the only consequences Trump is likely to experience before the election.  Is that crazy or wrong-headed thinking?

https://twitter.com/KatiePhang/status/1831828704131182875

I think Justice Merchan will NOT delay sentencing.

Anyone want to stake out a position on this?

Somewhat related:

https://twitter.com/kyledcheney/status/1831795593087479988

I guess we already knew that this trial wouldn’t be happening before the election.  Any attorneys out there who want o share your thoughts on this?

Okay, here’s what Andrew Weissman had to say about this.  It seems like a long delay to me, but he thinks this is fast!  “in short order”.  Okay, Andrew, I will take your word for it.  Especially if Omnes agrees.

https://twitter.com/AWeissmann_/status/1831798860261495256

Speaking of the dumpster fire, how is it that two staffers are being identified as participants in the assault “that never happened”?   So were TWO men pushing around the woman who had the audacity to tell them the rules?  What is wrong with these people?  Did they not have parents to teach them values?

https://twitter.com/evenbev/status/1831836721631342879

And totally unrelated, this is a great photograph.

https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1831861867209470277

Is this guy TRYING TO LOSE?

I just looked up from the laptop.  Henry is standing on his back legs in front of me, demanding to be fed again.  Miss Willow is glaring at me from above, and when I laughed at them, Miss Willow was. not. amused.

Feeling better today- I think a bunch of the initial swelling and shock has subsided, so I have a bunch more range of motion. Still a fucking mess, but I think I will be back in the pool by Monday. I will say that I had been feeling so good the last year or so that I had forgotten how tiring and irritating chronic pain is. You just don’t want to do anything and when you do do something it hurts.

Speaking of not doing anything, I am still flabbergasted that Benny Johnson and those other idiots were making 400k a month to be Russian assets. Just how much fucking money is flying around conservative influencers? For that kind of scratch every front pager here could quit there job and pull in 350k a year. Jesus christ. Soros has let us down, people.

In other news, this is awesome:

The father of the teenager suspected of opening fire at a Georgia high school, killing four people and wounding nine, has been accused of letting his son possess a weapon, authorities said Thursday after announcing the man’s arrest.

Colin Gray, 54, the father of Colt Gray, has been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a social media post.

“These charges stem from Mr. Gray knowingly allowing his son, Colt, to possess a weapon,” GBI Director Chris Hosey said at an evening news conference. “His charges are directly connected with, the actions of his son and allowing him to possess a weapon.”

War for Ukraine Day 925: The Air Raid Alerts Are Going Up All Over Ukraine

A quick housekeeping note: Rosie is doing great. Her next treatment is a week from Monday. Thank you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

The air raid alerts are going up over Ukraine. As of 6:15 PM EDT/1:15 AM local time in Ukraine they’re up in western Ukraine running from Lviv to Vinnitsiya Oblasts and in eastern Ukraine from Sumy through Kharkiv and then all the way around to Kherson and Mykolaiv Oblasts. There’s no indication on the alert maps that Russian SU-24s or MiG-31s are up, so this is likely another drone swarm (for now) and there was a significant impact in Donetsk Oblast around 1:13 AM local time in Ukraine.

We have some more indictments.

First up, Gregory Simes and his wife. Simes, you may remember Simes from way back in the spring of 2016. He hosted Trump’s only foreign policy address at his Center for the National Interest. The Center for the National Interest is a beltway think tank that is more aligned with Russia’s interests than the US’s.

— Laura Rozen (@lrozen) September 5, 2024

DOJ: “From at least in or around June 2022 through the present, Dimitri Simes, Anastasia Simes and others allegedly participated in a scheme to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), by providing services to Channel One Russia, including by serving as a presenter and producer of programming, and by receiving over $1 million, a personal car and driver, a stipend for an apartment in Moscow, Russia, and a team of 10 employees from Channel One Russia following its designation by OFAC. The indictment alleges that Dimitri and Anastasia Simes also engaged in a scheme to commit money laundering, knowing the transactions were intended to conceal the proceeds of IEEPA violations.”

I’m pretty sure that Scott Ritter is caught up in this based on the reporting that his phones and electronic devices were seized at the same time as Simes’ were. So we’ll keep an eye out to see if he gets indicted as well.

The GRU’s elite wetwork team, Unit 29155, also got some love from the DOJ today.

“The defendants targets included Ukrainian Government systems and data with no military or defense-related roles. Later targets included computer systems in countries around the world that were providing support to Ukraine, including the United States and 25 other NATO countries”

— Dan Black (@DanWBlack) September 5, 2024

Ukraine was only one of the many targets of the newly disclosed (but long suspected) hackers’ unit of GRU’s most aggressive unit, 29155. Estonia and 14 other countries participated in the counter-intelligence operatioon against the unit, code-named Toy Soldier. pic.twitter.com/AttlLs7ouu

— Christo Grozev (@christogrozev) September 5, 2024

Unit 29155 is responsible for the Skirpal hit, the unintended follow on poisoning that resulted from their sloppy tradecraft, another of other successful and/or suspected assassination attempts, and has, as we covered several months ago, been implicated in the alleged attacks against US diplomatic, military, and intelligence personnel that is commonly referred to as Havana Syndrome.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.
