Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

This blog will pay for itself.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Brand to Generic spreads

by David Anderson|  January 23, 202411:00 am| 40 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance

Stat News has an article on a DOD IG report on the White House pharmacy during the Trump Administration. Lots of things stood out to me but one that is relevant for a lot of insurance design is the brand to generic spread:

White House medical staff also regularly asked for brand name medications like Ambien and Provigil instead of the generics because “their patients prefer using the brand name drugs,” a practice that contradicted military policy. Those two drugs alone cost the government $144,520 over the period from 2017 to 2019, whereas the generics would have cost $2,064, according to the report.

72:1

WOW

That is an incredible pricing spread. It is more than I typically see but I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about pharmacy pricing (one of my co-authors spends most of her day thinking about this, so I will learn a lot from her!). This is why insurers have fairly complex and confusing formularies that strongly encourage people to use generic drugs if available with low to no co-pays or deductible exposure.

I think we’ve all seen the clips of Jasmine Crockett giving the Republicans “what for”, and talking about classified documents in the shitter at MAL.

The Texas Tribune tells the story of how she distinguished herself from the other 50 or so Democrats.

A few excerpts.

WASHINGTON — In summer 2021, about 50 Democrats from the Texas House arrived at the nation’s capital — absconding from Austin in a plot to block Republicans from passing a bill that would impose tighter restrictions on voting access.

Buzzing with excitement, the lawmakers took their places in front of reporters, with senior members and leadership moving toward the center to field questions. But Jasmine Crockett — a freshman from Dallas — stepped away from the group to take a call. She held up her phone to film her own live interview with a TV station, the dome of the Capitol building peeking out behind her.

That interview would be one of many that Crockett would take while camped out in Washington to discuss the Democrats’ quorum break, in a move that would raise the little-known lawmaker’s profile as she became an unofficial spokesperson for the dramatic political spectacle.

“There were people in leadership from my understanding that were not a fan of a freshman being a bit of a face of some of this,” Crockett said in an interview with The Texas Tribune.

Nonetheless, she accepted as many interviews as she could fit into her schedule, carrying two phones and a laptop to handle the crush of inquiries she received.

“I did not expect the world to pay attention,” Crockett said.

But she wanted them to.

Crockett, 42, didn’t get into politics to wait her turn. While she says she may have ruffled some feathers among her caucus peers at the time, her decision to grab the spotlight catapulted her career and provided the foundation for her to run for Congress the following year.

Crockett got her first taste of going viral during a September hearing of the House Oversight Committee, which garnered media attention because of the Republican impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Crockett took aim at former President Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents, holding up printed photos from his indictment showing boxes of classified documents in the Mar-a-Lago bathroom.

“These are our national secrets, looks like, in the shitter to me,” Crockett said in a clip that was shared on Reddit and Tiktok. One fan edit of the moment set to music, created by a 16-year-old fan, raked in over 8 million views on TikTok.

It’s a fun and interesting article, so if you have a few minutes, read the whole thing.  h/t Mousebumples

What else is going on today?   (Besides the Biden-Harris live event on reproductive rights that’s coming up around lunchtime.  Looks like TaMara has a post ready to go for that!)

I keep thinking we’ll hear from the appeals court about immunity and jurisdiction.  I alternate between thinking it’s taking so much longer than the predictions because 1) there is disagreement between the conservative judge and the other two, and 2) they are all in agreement, but they want their ruling to be really tight and not leave any strings for the Supreme Court to tug at.

Can I just say that the world was better when we had a supreme court that we could at least sort of trust?

frosty

Since we’re past the Snowbird part of the trip, I decided to reduce the title!

I was surprised I only took pictures of the two sculptures that I posted in the previous OTR. These are more of the 130, taken by Ms F.  There are a couple of each of the artist’s categories. I don’t know the names of the pieces so there isn’t any descriptive text. Enjoy!

Nikki Haley sweeps Dixville Notch's primary, winning all 6 votes https://t.co/Xp8g4H7ZBC

— The Associated Press (@AP) January 23, 2024

Per the Associated Press:

The six registered voters of tiny Dixville Notch in New Hampshire all cast their ballots for Nikki Haley at midnight on Tuesday, giving her a clean sweep over former President Donald Trump and all the other candidates.

The resort town was the first place in the nation to vote in the 2024 primaries. The voters were outnumbered more than 10-to-1 by reporters from every corner of the globe — not to mention by a pile of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

Dixville Notch has a tradition of first-in-the-nation voting that dates back to 1960, with the results announced just a few minutes after midnight…

Les Otten, the principal owner and developer of the Balsams Resort, said he was excited to cast his ballot.

“It’s special. It really is,” Otten said. “It’s what ought to happen in every community in the United States, where there is 100% participation, everybody votes. None of the six of us can complain about the outcome of the election, because we’ve participated.”

Otten said he didn’t agree with those saying the New Hampshire primary had fallen flat this year, with President Joe Biden not on the ballot and Republican contender Ron DeSantis withdrawing at the last minute.

“It always does boil down to just a couple of people at the end of the day,” Otten said. “We’ve got two viable candidates on the Republican side.”

Dixville Notch caters to snowmobilers and Nordic skiers in the winter, and golfers and hikers in the summer. For the primary, it had four registered Republicans and two undeclared voters.

PREDICTION:

After all the votes in New Hampshire are counted Dean Phillips will be tied with Joe Biden in the delegate count.

I don’t have much to talk about tonight since I am trying to not think about politics. Joe Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee, Trump is going to be the Republican nominee and the only thing in question about that is whether he will be in a jail cell or not.

It rained here- hard enough that you could hear the rain, I have no idea if this is normal or this is because I dragged it with me off them thar hills. If the latter is the case you can better believe I will capitalize on that newfound ability. I will indeed.

Any movie or tv selections? I will cut the first person who says Midsommar or that other one.
