Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

This really is a full service blog.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Second rate reporter says what?

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

What If?

by WaterGirl|  October 24, 20245:21 pm| 216 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Decades ago I read a book.  No idea who the author was, no idea what the title was.

All I remember is the suggestion that if you are going to “What if…” you should do it for both sides of the equation.

So in this thread, can we “what if?” to the good side?

What if our hard work pays off, and we win?

Checking In From The Dirty South

Is Missouri the South?  In attitude, it certainly seems to be.  These signs were everywhere in southern Misery.  Some varieties had a little infant in the lower left corner, but they all had the mom bouncing her 6 month-old baby.  Lots of them on church lawns, and many were paired with Trump signs (not on church lawns).  I’m sure there’s some loophole that allows churches to advocate for issues not candidates, and if not, 6 Supremos will make it so in their next term.  [ETA: Amendment 3 would establish a constitutional right to abortion in the Missouri constitution, so “Yes” is the right vote.]

Part of the right-wing ratchet, whereby they keep getting their unpopular, retrograde agenda into the mainstream, is driven by “respect” for churches and the asinine beliefs peddled within.  (How dare you try to criticize stormtroopers, don’t you know they’re god-fearing churchgoers?)  I’m sure I’ll be ashes before it ever happens, but I’d love to see some Democrats start talking about taxing churches — not the charitable part, just the big, empty, useless chapels.  With both Harris and Walz checking the box of going to church (Kamala mentioned her pastor in last night’s CNN Town Hall, Walz talked about his faith in the debate), I’m thinking that day is far away.  No criticism of either Harris or Walz implied here — you do what you must to win, and maybe they even believe that stuff.

Once I escaped Missouri and Kansas (even worse that Misery), I stopped to fill up at a truck stop in Eastern Colorado — Boebert’s newly adopted district — where I saw a grandpa marching his three little granddaughters into the back seat of his pickup with a Trump/Vance bumper sticker.  People like him are the target of the “Protect Children and Families” nonsense — he knows that those little girls will grow up and probably move to the cities of the nearby Front Range to get a job. (In his part of the world, these jobs are going boy, and they ain’t coming back.)  But if they’re baby trapped after some homeboy knocks them up in the back seat of a pickup on prom night, after contraception and abortion have been outlawed like gramps wants, at least his family is protected.  If, by “protected”, you mean that he doesn’t have to experience the rejection of kids moving to the cities because they’re full of opportunities and great experiences, even though Fox tells him that they’re hellholes.  I’m hoping (and expecting) that the Front Range will vote “yes” in massive numbers on Amendment 79, which puts abortion rights into the Colorado constitution, so those little girls have a choice when they get older, even if the assholes grandpa supports get elected.

Anyway, those are my bitter musings on the current state of the country.  I’ve pretty much stopped looking at polls and even reading much of the election coverage, because everything’s within the margin of error, and most of the discussion is noise about polling noise.  I still think we’re gonna win, but who knows by how much.  It is notable that the grandpa I saw in Colorado didn’t have a Boebert sticker on his truck, too.  So maybe there’s a little hope for even that benighted part of God’s green earth.

Been saying it for two years: few guys—especially those who fancy themselves election analysts—grasp the enormity of Dobbs.

What the CRA/VRA did electorally to racist Southerners Dobbs is doing to women all across America. Repubs have lost women for a generation. https://t.co/CPl4uLkyyS

On top of all of the political horror, I hate that the fact that (mostly male) pundits do not think having a sexual predator in the Oval Office, making long-term decisions about women’s lives was/is an important and devastating issue.

Kamala Harris will deliver a major address in DC on the Ellipse – the site of Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election – where she will make the case to turn the page on Trump’s era of chaos and pursue a New Way Forward for the country.https://t.co/BpIS9p6K8W

On The Road – Elma – Greenland Part 1

by WaterGirl|  October 24, 20245:00 am| 20 Comments

Elma

My second big adventure for the summer of 2024 (Iceland was the first) was a 22 day transatlantic cruise. Royal Caribbean offered the Ultimate World Cruise on the Serenade of the Seas from December 2023 to September 2024. For those who couldn’t do the full 9 months (there were 600+ who had) you could join the ship for segments, i.e. South America, Africa, or Antarctica. My segment was the final leg, heading home. That fact made some parts of the cruise a little strange, like crashing someone else’s farewell party; and I may do a post about that at another time. But these two OTRs are about a place I never would have considered going to but for it being part of this cruise, Greenland.

We boarded the ship in Amsterdam, sailed up around the north coast of Scotland and out into a very rough North Atlantic to Iceland for a two day stop. We were to have spent four days in and around Greenland, but weather conditions made the Captain decide to change our itinerary. So we missed a day of sailing along the west coast of Greenland and a day in Nuuk, the capitol city. But we did get two beautiful days, first a leisurely sail through Prince Christian Sound and then a day in the village of Qaqortoq.

On The Road - Elma - Greenland Part 1 9
Prince Christian Sound, GreenlandAugust 25, 2024

The Prince Christian Sound separates the mainland from the islands of the Cape Farewell Archipelago near the southernmost tip of Greenland. The long fjord system is mostly surrounded by steep mountains and glaciers that go straight into its waters where they calve icebergs. First icebergs encountered as we are sailing into the Sound from the eastern end.

War for Ukraine Day 973: Secretary Austin Confirms that Kim Has Sent North Korean Special Forces To Russia

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is doing okay. She’s moving a bit slow and having a moderately strong reaction to her final chemo therapy treatment. This is not unexpected and she’ll get back to her more normal self in a couple of days. Thanks for all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, I’ve had a very, very long day. I have another tomorrow, so I’m just going to do the basics tonight.

The AP informs us that Secretary Austin has confirmed that North Korean Special Forces have been deployed to Russia:

The U.S. said Wednesday that 3,000 North Korean troops have deployed to Russia and are training at several locations, calling the move very serious and warning that those forces will be “fair game” if they go into combat in Ukraine.

The deployment raises the potential for the North Koreans to join Russian forces in Ukraine and suggests expanded military ties between the two nations as Moscow seeks weapons and troops to gain ground in a grinding war that has stalemated after more than two years.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called it a “next step” after the North has provided Russia with arms, and said Pyongyang could face consequences for aiding Russia directly. His comments were the first public U.S. confirmation of North Korea sending troops to Russia — a development South Korean officials disclosed but was denied by Pyongyang and Moscow.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. believes that at least 3,000 North Korean soldiers traveled by ship to Vladivostok, Russia’s largest Pacific port, in early to mid-October.

Republican Venality Open Thread: Trump & the Generals

A soldier, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, was murdered at Ford Hood. Trump had the family to the White House, and offered to cover the costs of the funeral.
When he got the bill, he refused to pay:
“It doesn’t cost $60,000 to bury a fucking Mexican!”

Gen. Kelly’s statements about Trump should be a campaign ender, but (predictably!) it’s being hand-waved as a hypothetical, just TFG being himself, probably a gross exaggeration from someone with a book to sell, and besides was Hitler really that bad, given what we know now.

But this anecdote about Vanessa Guillen… rushing to grab some publicity when an American-born soldier is murdered, and later dismissing her & her grieving family this way? I hope the Harris/Walz campaign *and* Colin Allred share TFG’s comments widely.

Wait she's the soldier he was talking about? Their are like a half dozen memorial murals for her in South Houston. Democrats need to spend all week demanding Ted Cruz give comment on this and make this a focus of their rally here on Friday. https://t.co/Yv2hPlI2gF

I can’t even turn on the news or browse the headlines before instantly being sent into a frothing rage. It’s something every fucking day. Whether it was Elon dancing around the stage being a “dipshit” or Trump pulling his DEI for billionaires stunt at McDonalds or pining for Hitler’s generals.

Just fucking make it stop.
