Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

This really is a full service blog.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

This Aged Well

Me, on 5 October 2012:

I was a winger for years, and we can discuss that particular psychosis at a later date, but what I can explain to you right now is that they fucking hate you.

They just do.

They hate you because you respect gay people as normal human beings.

They hate you because you respect African-Americans as normal human beings.

They hate you because you respect Asians, Latinos, and everyone else who isn’t a straight white male.

They hate you because you respect a woman’s right to choose.

They hate you because you respect the right of people to be with who they love.

They hate you because you respect the right of anyone to adopt a child.

They hate you because you respect international law.

They hate you because you believe in economic and tax fairness.

They hate you because you respect the right of anyone to worship any way they want.

They hate you because you respect scientists and their collective knowledge.

They hate you because you respect teachers and the work they do educating Americans.

They hate you because you respect the human dignity of every American.

They hate you because you respect the rights of people over corporations.

They hate you because you respect nature and think we have a duty to take care of the environment.

They hate you because you respect your right to vote, and they don’t think you deserve it.

They hate you because you respect the constitution and the rule of law.

They hate you because you respect laws against torture.

In short, they hate you. Period.

They masquerade their bullshit in the words of Jesus and the all-knowing free market, but it is transparent what motivates them. Not love for their fellow man, not love for their fellow citizen, not love for country- what motivates them is hate for the other.

You.

They fucking hate you. They want you, and everyone who speaks for you, and every institution that represents your values, whether it be Planned Parenthood or food banks or ACORN- you name it. They want it destroyed.

I just do not understand why more people do not recognize this. The Republicans have declared total war on America, and people are responding like this is politics as usual. It isn’t. It really isn’t. It’s really all or nothing at this point. We put the birchers/tea party/conservatives back in their place and destroy the current GOP, or we deal with this shit for the next forty-sixty years.

And we have lost so much ground and their hate has intensified since. It’s also worth noting that the right wing move to fascism was not a recent development.

On The Road – Elma – Greenland Part 2

Elma

Our second Greenland day was spent in Qaqortoq. We had received information about points of interest and hiking routes. A Canadian couple from our dinner table group took a boat trip out to get up close and personal with the ice bergs. Unfortunately, we are not so young and spry anymore, so contented ourselves with walking up to the Qaqortoq Hotel and Conference Center in hopes of finding some locally brewed beer. Alas, no local brew was on tap; but we were told we should be able to get it in Nuuk.

It was at dinner that evening, as we sailed away from Qaqortoq that the Captain announced we were ditching Nuuk because of threatening weather reports. So we never got any Greenlandic beer. The Captain did appease the disappointed but adding Halifax as substitute port. In Halifax, we shared a flight of 13 locally brewed beers. It was a good thing that the brewery was directly opposite the gangway of the ship

President Biden will make a formal apology tomorrow at the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona for atrocities carried out against Native American children in boarding schools supported by the federal government in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Joe Biden is a good man and a fine President. From the local Arizona news, “Biden to apologize for government support of brutal Indian boarding schools”:

President Joe Biden will make a formal apology on Friday for atrocities carried out against Native American children in boarding schools supported by the federal government in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The formal acknowledgment of the U.S. government’s role in facilitating these schools — which often forcibly removed children from their homes and stripped them of their native heritage — will come during remarks the president is set to give at the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona.

Deb Haaland, secretary of the Department of Interior, told Scripps News the apology carries significant weight for many Native Americans like her who have a personal history with the boarding schools.

“I almost can’t put it into words what it will mean to me. My grandparents were taken away to boarding school, so I understand and have experienced how that terrible era affected my own family,” Haaland said.

“For so many years, it seemed like Indian Country was invisible. Folks looked at us as if we were living in the past. Now they recognize that, yes, we have whole, full communities who stayed intact and persevered through all of the terrible assimilation policies of this country. And it will be wonderful for folks across the country to feel that the president sees them and that he listened,” she added…

The apology is the first step in a series of recommendations laid out by the Department of the Interior. Other steps include establishing a national memorial, repatriating remains of children who never returned from the boarding schools and returning former boarding school lands to Indian tribes.

Mom informed me today that she is lying in bed at night worrying about Trump being elected, and that about sums up the feeling here on the other side of the alley. I’m sure many of you feel that way, and you know what, that’s okay and normal. Good people worry about the things and people they love. It’s patriotic to love your country this much. You’re being a patriot by giving yourself agita.

That’s how we’re fucking framing it from here on out. I’m not freaking out, I’m being a good citizen. Murrica!

In other news, a friend I have known for 25 years said he didn’t know if he could vote for Kamala because of Gaza, and I informed him I would drive to Cleveland, kick his ass, pet his dogs, and go home. So we are all handling this election in our own ways.

***

This is my favorite new Democrat and I know nothing about her other than this (please don’t go milkshake duck on me lady):

That’s the sort of can’t do spirit we need. In all seriousness, why the fuck not? I wish more people ran here in WV, because you never know. And you know what else, people don’t always know what they don’t like until they are given a better option, and maybe that Democrat that runs in a district for the first time in twenty years might win.

***

I gotta get up at 5:30 tomorrow to go pick up Joelle’s sister at the airport and drive her to her mother’s, so I am gonna call it a night. Be well.

War for Ukraine Day 974: North Korean Special Forces Arrive in Kursk

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is still feeling a bit meh. Again, completely unexpected on the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after a chemo treatment. She’s chilling on the bed with Ruby and me. Thank you for all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, I’m fried. So, just the basics tonight. I’ll deal with the Marine vet and crooked cop from Palm Beach, Florida, now residing in Russia, and his work to ratfuck the US election for the GRU’s sabotage unit. As well as his long history doing this stuff to local officials and others who crossed him when he was a sheriff’s deputy in Florida and before he fled to Russia.

The cost:

The funeral of 14-year-old Ania, her mom Iryna and aunt Liudmyla who were killed in their own home in Sumy on the night of October 22nd by a Russian Shahed drone.

The first North Korean soldiers have been deployed to the front line in Kursk Oblast; South Korea could review its ban on supplying lethal arms to Ukraine; and more. https://t.co/SaZJa0mRTQ

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) October 24, 2024

From The Kyiv Independent:

The first North Korean soldiers to participate alongside Russian forces in the war against Ukraine have been deployed to the front line in Kursk Oblast, Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) reported on Oct. 24.

North Korea has sent nearly 12,000 troops to Russia, including 500 officers and three generals. The first sightings of North Korean soldiers were recorded on Oct. 23.

These soldiers are reportedly receiving training at five military training grounds in Ekaterinoslavka, Knyaze-Volkonskoe, and Sergeevka, as well as in Ussuriysk and Ulan-Ude in eastern Russia.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-bek Yevkurov has been appointed to supervise the training and adaptation of the North Korean troops, who are given “a few weeks” to adjust, according to HUR’s report.

The North Korean military is provided with ammunition, bedding, winter clothing, footwear, and hygiene products. According to Ukraine’s military intelligence, each soldier receives 50 meters of toilet paper and 300 grams of soap each month.

Ukrainian intelligence claimed that Russia has “high hopes” for the participation of North Korean soldiers in the war.

North Korea has denied reports of North Korean troop presence in Russia, while a Kremlin spokesperson provided an evasive response.

A military intelligence source told the Kyiv Independent on Oct. 21 that Russian authorities detained 18 North Korean soldiers who abandoned their positions in Kursk Oblast. Video footage has also emerged, allegedly showing North Korean troops at a Russian military training camp.

Kyiv and Seoul say Moscow is planning to involve thousands of North Korean troops in its full-scale war.

“If they do deploy to fight against Ukraine, they’re fair game, they’re fair targets, and the Ukrainian military will defend themselves against North Korean soldiers the same way they’re defending themselves against Russian soldiers,” Kirby told a press briefing at the White House.

“And so the possibility that there could be dead and wounded North Korean soldiers… is absolutely real if they get deployed.”

Much more at the link.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

I’m sure someone will be along soon with a proper post, but in the mean time… What else do Americans need to know?

Dumb NYT headlines

Buckle up, buttercups — the Trump surrogate pitches will only get stupider over the next 10 days. I recommend avoiding the bullshit as much as possible.
