Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Republicans in disarray!

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

The willow is too close to the house.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

All hail the time of the bunny!

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

War for Ukraine Day 1,450: Looks Like Trump Had Another Phone Call with Putin

by Adam L Silverman|  February 13, 202610:40 pm| 19 Comments

This post is in: China, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

It’s been a long week, everyone is fried, so I’m just going to run through the basics.

It seems that Trump has been talking to Putin again:

Trump: “Zelenskyy is gonna have to get moving. Russia wants to make a deal. Zelenskyy is gonna have to get moving.”

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) February 13, 2026 at 12:26 PM

Russia does not want to “make a deal,” russia wants Ukraine to surrender territory that russia cannot conquer by force. To achieve this, they use Trump to pressure Ukraine.

Ukraine is expected to surrender in a war it has not lost!

🇺🇦👀 Zelensky on Putin: I am younger than Putin, this is important. He does not have too much time.

🇺🇸 Zelensky: Trump wants compromises.

We made a lot of compromises, Putin and his friends, they are not in prison. We accepted a ceasefire, Putin refused.

— MAKS 25 👀🇺🇦 (@maks23.bsky.social) February 13, 2026 at 4:58 PM

Trump:

“I ended 8 wars in just 10 months. 8 wars are ended, and we have a couple of more to go, but one in particular, Russia-Ukraine, it’s a mess, it’s a horrible thing. And I think we’ll get there. It takes two to tango, you have to remember that.”

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) February 13, 2026 at 3:51 PM

You aren’t getting anywhere because you’re pressuring the victim instead of the aggressor—Russia. What you’re doing only emboldens Putin and increases civilian casualties in Ukraine.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) February 13, 2026 at 3:51 PM

Rubio skipped a meeting with European leaders on Ukraine in Munich due to scheduling conflicts, according to the Financial Times.

One European official called it madness, while another politician remarked that without Rubio, the meeting was pointless.

🤔

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) February 13, 2026 at 2:06 PM

Trump, Rubio, Hegseth are very quickly making the US irrelevant. Trump is not leading, he is incapable of following, and he refuses to get out of his own and anyone else’s way.

Can someone tell me what this “beautiful” window of opportunity even looks like? What “deals” are we talking about here?
Seems like there’s no “deal”, only a demand for the Ukrainian people to surrender their territory and give up.

To me, this post looks like an example of information manipulation.

— Maria Drutska (@mariadrutska.bsky.social) February 13, 2026 at 9:57 AM

This is the key question, but I’d change the framing a bit. The window of opportunity is not actually for Ukraine, it’s for Trump. And he keeps closing it on himself and then blaming it on President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians.

There is no address or press conference today from President Zelenskyy because he was traveling to Munich for this year’s Security Conference. He did meet with Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych, who the IOC disqualified yesterday, and presented him with the Ukrainian Order of Freedom.

The President Met with Ukrainian Skeleton Racer Vladyslav Heraskevych and Awarded Him the Order of Freedom

14 February 2026 – 00:20

In Munich, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Ukrainian skeleton racer and member of Ukraine’s National Olympic Team, Vladyslav Heraskevych, and with his father, the coach of Ukraine’s skeleton team, Mykhailo Heraskevych.

The Head of State thanked Vladyslav Heraskevych for his dignified stance and presented him with the Order of Freedom.

“With great respect to you, and certainly to all our Olympians who have stood by you and your position. Medals are important for Ukraine and for you, but what matters most, to my mind, is who you are. I consider you a remarkable person. And I am confident that all other achievements, which are so important to you, will surely come. And Ukraine will have both champions and Olympians. But above all, Ukraine’s greatest asset is Ukrainians. You embody that kind of person,” said the President.

Vladyslav Heraskevych expressed gratitude for the tremendous support and emphasized that the Ukrainian people have united in the face of injustice.

“Most importantly, the whole world is now truly talking about the athletes depicted on this helmet. And despite their deaths, they are now drawing attention to Ukraine. They are rallying support for Ukraine. And that is truly something very special,” said the Ukrainian athlete.

On Vladyslav Heraskevych’s helmet are portraits of 22 Ukrainian athletes who were killed by Russia. He intended to start the skeleton race wearing it as a tribute and in memory of all Ukrainian athletes who will never compete again because of Russia’s aggression. However, a few hours before his first race, the International Olympic Committee disqualified Vladyslav Heraskevych.

“The most important thing is that we are not trying to break any rules or act as barbarians. We will continue to fight for our rights, despite everything,” the athlete added.

Mykhailo Heraskevych also noted the support the gesture received, not only from Ukrainians but also from friends of Ukraine around the world.

“Everything you did was right. What matters is how people reacted. We thank you for this,” emphasized the President.

🇺🇦 Zelensky: Remembrance is not a violation.

I met with Ukrainian skeleton racer and member of Ukraine’s National Olympic Team, Vladyslav Heraskevych, and his father, coach of Ukraine’s skeleton team, Mykhailo Heraskevych. I presented Vladyslav with the Order of Freedom.

Ukraine will always have champions and Olympians. But above all, Ukraine’s greatest asset is Ukrainians – those who cherish the truth and the memory of the athletes killed by Russia, athletes who will never compete again because of the Russian aggression.

🇬🇪🇩🇪A long read – but worth your time.
In his interview, German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, is refreshingly direct about Georgia’s crisis and Germany’s position.

He makes two points that matter:
🔹Germany is not in the business of “regime change.”
🔹But it is in the business of defending principles, rules, and European commitments.
2/4

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) February 13, 2026 at 3:12 PM

That balance is uncomfortable for many. Interestingly, he both validates the frustration felt by many Georgians and reminds the more impassioned among us that diplomacy is not activism.
States operate through law, institutions, and process.

World order, if it is to mean anything, must be upheld properly, not impulsively.
In a time of sharp rhetoric and growing polarization, this is sober, principled statecraft from Amb. Fischer.

Highly recommended reading.

The Munich Security Conference:

As the Munich Security Conference begins, Ukraine’s allies confirm $35B more in military aid.

With air defence and drones the priority, this will build critical defence capabilities as Russia’s losses become unsustainable and their economy crumbles.

A painting by the Ukrainain artist NEIVANMADE. The upper 1/2 is grey and there are black Shahed drones on it aimed towards the bottom of the painting. The bottom half of the painting has a blood red background and in the center of the bottom is a house, to it's left is a swing set, and to its right is a car. They are charcoal grey on the blood red background background. The drones are targeting the house, swing set, and car. Above the house and below the drones are the words "Russia Kills To Erase Free People".

Big attack by fascist Russia on democratic Ukraine tonight: Shahed-type attack drones currently menacing Kyiv, Kalibr cruise missiles heading for Burshtyn power plant in Ivano-Frankivsk, 2 Tu-160 and 4 Tu-95 strategic bombers airborne, heading for cruise missile launch positions.

The Short-Range Air Defense Component – Focused on Countering Attack Drones – Must Operate Far More Effectively and Prevent the Problems We Are Currently Facing – Address by the President

6 February 2026 – 19:40

I wish you good health, fellow Ukrainians!

First – the Air Force of the Armed Forces. There will be personnel changes, for now, within certain regions and units, specifically in areas related to defense against Russian “shaheds.” The short-range air defense component – focused on countering attack drones – must operate far more effectively and prevent the problems we are currently facing. In some sectors, defensive lines are better established; in others, work still needs to be done – and done thoroughly. It’s important that the Minister of Defense is directly handling this matter, the Commander of the Air Force has received additional instructions, and that there is sufficient strength within our Defense and Security Forces of Ukraine, sufficient experience that can and must be scaled up. Everything that truly works in any particular area or at any particular level should be applied wherever results are still insufficient. And every day counts. All decisions must be implemented as swiftly as possible.

The same approach applies to energy. We cannot afford weeks or months for repairs and equipment supply. And many, many processes are being actively accelerated. I want to thank all repair crews, every worker in the utility services, who are truly helping. I also want to thank the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and all energy companies – there is a great deal of truly heroic work. I thank the regional and local authorities – those that are genuinely effective. Often, preliminary repair reports for several weeks turn out to be inaccurate, and work can be accelerated. On every coordination call, this is a major part of the discussion – timelines, acceleration, sourcing, and supplying additional equipment.

Everyone in Ukraine is ready to help, and everyone is really helping Kyiv – including numerous communities, a lot of them, and state companies, all now directing their resources. The situation in the capital still remains very difficult. Over 1,100 buildings are without heating. People in these buildings must be given additional support.

It is also generally important to fully digitize everything related to the existing problems, current issues, people’s needs, and the means and methods of the assistance they receive. The more this digitization is implemented, the less time will be spent verifying reports.

A few more things. I have scheduled a meeting for tomorrow with our delegation: the team is returning to Ukraine today, late in the evening, and tomorrow, they will report on the sensitive aspects of the negotiations in Abu Dhabi that cannot be discussed over the phone. We are preparing for the next meetings – trilateral ones. Tomorrow, we will also speak with our European partners.

At the same time, our parliamentary diplomacy is working in the United States – the Chairman of the Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk. Before his trip, we discussed priorities with him. This includes support for our state, our people, and our negotiations as well. Ruslan has already met with Speaker Johnson, members of Congress, and many of our friends – friends of Ukraine in America; the Ukrainian Prayer Breakfast was held. I want to thank everyone for their support, and thank you, Ruslan, for productive parliamentary diplomacy. All of our state’s resources, all of them, must now be directed at one thing: supporting Ukraine, supporting Ukrainians, supporting our defense, our resilience, and our independence. Supporting Ukraine is bringing us closer to the conditions when this war will become pointless for Russia. We will definitely endure.

Glory to Ukraine!

As I’ve written here far too many times, the US defense industrial base (DIB) is humungous and plodding. It can’t do much at speed and doesn’t do much better in terms of scale. For a Long Time, It Was Not Possible to Unblock Exchanges; Now the Process Is Set in Motion, and It Is Crucial That It Continues – Address by the President

5 February 2026 – 20:03

Fellow Ukrainians!

Briefly about today. The most important thing is that there was a prisoner exchange, and 157 of our people have returned home from Russian captivity. For a long time, it was not possible to unblock exchanges; now the process is set in motion, and it is crucial that it continues. On Ukraine’s part, we are doing everything to ensure the exchanges, and I thank our partners who are helping and providing the necessary mediation. I would also like to thank our warriors – each of our units that replenishes Ukraine’s exchange fund allows the state to carry out this exchange work. Among those who returned today are men who had been in captivity for nearly four years. An extraordinarily long and difficult time, given all the Russian brutality. I am happy for the families, relatives, and brothers-in-arms who waited for their loved ones to return. We will continue working to bring everyone back – each and every one – military personnel and civilians, adults and children. We remember everyone and are verifying information on each person, name by name.

Today, I received a report from our negotiating team following two days of meetings and talks in the Emirates – with the American side and with the Russian side. I am expecting the team in Kyiv for a full in-person report, as many aspects cannot be properly discussed over the phone. What can already be said is that further meetings are planned in the near future, likely in the United States. We are ready for all workable formats that can genuinely bring peace closer and make it reliable, lasting, and such that deprives Russia of any appetite to continue the war. It is crucial that this war ends in a way that leaves Russia with no reward for its aggression. This is one of the key principles that restore and guarantee real security. I thank all our partners who support us in this.

Today, Prime Minister of Poland Tusk was on a visit to Ukraine, and I am grateful to Poland for all the support it has provided to Ukraine – our people and our independence. We appreciate this. Recently, we also had a good meeting with the President of Poland during events in Lithuania. I thank every Pole for the fact that Poland is among those in Europe who care about security. Today, we spoke at length about energy issues and defense cooperation. There is an agreement on the joint production of drones and other weapons – we will do this together.

I also spoke today with the Prime Minister of Sweden. I am grateful for the new energy support package for Ukraine worth $100 million. Thank you, Ulf! This will truly help. We also discussed our joint diplomatic efforts – what we can implement together with Sweden and together with all the Nordic states. Thank you, partners!

And one more point.

Major General Khmara delivered a report today on operations carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine. There are solid results, and I approved new tasks for the Service – new combat operations. We will continue to weaken the enemy.

I also want to commend our military – they know exactly who I mean – for their ability to reach even such targets as an “Oreshnik” launch site. Our “Flamingos” did their job. There are tangible results as well from units on the frontline. Despite extremely unfavorable weather, severe cold, and many other challenges, in January they managed to maintain the level of losses inflicted on the occupier. December recorded 35,000 killed and severely wounded occupiers; January – 30,000. We are holding Ukrainian positions. Thank you to everyone who is fighting for Ukrainians, and to everyone who is working for our state and our people.

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy also hosted Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk today.

President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Poland Agreed on the Implementation of Joint Energy Projects and the Joint Production of Drones

5 February 2026 – 16:38

In Kyiv, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, during which the leaders had a productive and substantive discussion on a wide range of issues.

“First and foremost, I want to thank Poland – the Polish state and the Polish people – for their support for Ukraine both now, as we defend ourselves against Russia’s invasion, and throughout all the years since Ukraine restored its independence. Poland has been – and I very much hope will always remain – a reliable friend of Ukraine, and therefore of our entire region and all of free Europe,” the Head of State said.

The President outlined the situation in Ukraine – particularly in the energy sector and its restoration after daily Russian terror. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to Ukrainians over Russian terrorist strikes on energy facilities and residential buildings, which have left people without heating, electricity, and water supply amid severe frost.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Donald Tusk, his team, and Polish society as a whole for providing Ukraine with energy equipment, first and foremost generators.

The leaders discussed energy cooperation and measures that can strengthen both Ukraine and Poland. In particular, they addressed the implementation of projects to develop the energy grids in both countries. The President and the Prime Minister count on productive work by their teams, especially at the level of the ministers of energy and finance.

“And when it comes to gas supplies to Europe, and to Ukraine in particular, Poland is already working with us on this, and we will expand this track by increasing LNG supplies,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy added.

A substantial part of the discussion was devoted to joint defense programs. The leaders spoke about Poland’s continued participation in the PURL initiative, Ukraine’s full participation in the SAFE instrument, and joint production. Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Tusk signed a Letter of Intent on the joint production of defense materiel in Poland and Ukraine. These agreements will ensure the development of digital infrastructure, robotics, and unmanned systems.

“Together, we are preparing to produce drones – co-produce them with Poland – and this will happen, along with the production of other weapons. Our state has up-to-date expertise – probably the greatest at this moment, because we are going through a war – on which weapons actually work in modern warfare and what can truly help. These are precisely the kinds of weapons we must produce together to defend our countries and Europe,” the President emphasized.

“We will also continue working on further deliveries of weapons to Ukraine and assistance in the war against Russia. The forty-seventh package is already prepared. The forty-eighth is currently being prepared. We also discussed how to support Ukraine in terms of air defense. Immediately after returning to Poland, I will once again speak with my generals and with the minister of defense about how to support Ukraine as quickly and as effectively as possible in countering Russia’s aerial aggression,” Donald Tusk noted.

Separately, the leaders discussed diplomatic efforts to end the war. The President shared details about the work of Ukraine’s negotiating team in Abu Dhabi in a trilateral format.

“We must bring this war to a real end – with reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. These are guarantees for the entire region. And most importantly, Russia must receive no reward whatsoever for its aggression. The war must end in a way that leaves Russia with no desire to launch this aggression again – against Ukraine or against other European states,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized.

According to the Head of State, Ukraine counts on Poland’s continued support for all EU pressure measures against the Russian Federation, including decisions to block Russian oil tankers and a strong 20th sanctions package.

“We are also grateful for Poland’s principled position on Russian assets: Russian assets must be used for protection against Russia and recovery after Russia. All decisions necessary to make this happen must be implemented. There is already a decision providing 90 billion in support for Ukraine over two years. We must also achieve results with regard to the full amount of Russian funds,” the President added.

In addition, the parties discussed the active participation of Poland and Polish companies in Ukraine’s recovery, as well as preparations for the international Recovery Conference, which will take place this year in Poland – in Gdańsk.

Estonia:

Tallinn sent dozens of its own emergency generators to Zhytomyr Oblast after Russian energy strikes left the area struggling. €40,000 of equipment pulled straight from strategic reserves, skipping procurement. Restocking planned within a month.

From EuroMaidan Press:

Estonia’s capital city of Tallinn shipped dozens of generators and diesel heat guns to northern Ukrainian Zhytomyr Oblast from its strategic reserves after local authorities asked for urgent help surviving the winter amid Russia’s repeated strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The Estonian capital chose speed over procedure, pulling equipment worth around €40,000 from its own emergency warehouses rather than buying new units or sending money.

Russia’s systematic terror campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continues to plunge millions into darkness, as authorities impose electricity rationing and civilians endure freezing winters without heat. Daily drone and missile strikes relentlessly target power plants, thermal stations, substations, and other critical components—causing widespread blackouts and trapping energy workers in a grueling cycle of emergency repairs and constant rescheduling of outages in a desperate effort to stabilize the grid.

ERR reported that about two weeks ago, Zhytomyr Oblast authorities turned to Tallinn with a request for help surviving the winter. Repeated Russian attacks had left the oblast in a dire situation. Tallinn, which had existing contacts with this region west of Kyiv Oblast, responded quickly.

“We have now sent dozens of electric generators as well as diesel heat guns. As I have said, they are going to very specific locations in accordance with this aid request. The total cost of this entire shipment is around €40,000,” Tallinn Mayor Peeter Raudsepp said.

The shipment includes small generators capable of charging devices or powering small household appliances, as well as larger units powerful enough to run a kindergarten. City officials acknowledged the delivery is a drop in the ocean for Zhytomyr Oblast, but said Tallinn’s resources are severely limited.

‘Guilty of not betraying Ukraine’. Russia’s supreme court imposes 13-year sentence against Oksana Hladkykh
khpg.org/en/1608815489

— Euromaidan Press (@euromaidanpress.bsky.social) February 4, 2026 at 9:38 PM

From Human Rights in Ukraine:

Russia’s supreme court has reduced by only one year the 14-year sentence passed against Oksana Hladkykh, a mother of four abducted from her home in occupied Zaporizhzhia oblast in November 2023.  This was presumably a cassation appeal, as the original sentence, passed on 7 June 2024 by the occupation ‘Zaporizhzhia regional court’, had been upheld on 7 November 2024 by the first court of appeal in Moscow.  All of Russia’s ‘treason trials’, including the supreme court hearing which seems to have been at the end of October 2025, are behind closed doors with this one of the reasons why information is scant and often delayed.  Although the supreme court ‘judges’ removed a part of the charge (the accusation of providing “other help to a foreign country”) and reduced the sentence from 14 to 13 years, they chose to see no reason to overturn a manifestly wrongful conviction on ‘treason’ charges under Article 275 of Russia’s criminal code.

The reasons for dismissing the charges and releasing the 49-year-old Ukrainian could not have been clearer and were set out by the authoritative Memorial Support for Political Prisoners Project when it declared Oksana Hladkykh a political prisoner in August 2025.  Hladkykh had never concealed her opposition to the Russian invaders and had openly expressed her views on social media, with this clearly the reason for her denunciation on a scurrilous Telegram channel aimed at hunting out those with a strong pro-Ukrainian position, as well as for her ‘arrest’ / abduction in late November 2023).  Neighbours from Dobrivka have suggested to RIA-South that Hladkykh’s former husband, who supported the Russians, could have denounced her to curry favour with the invaders.  It is also possible that Hladkykh had corresponded with somebody who claimed to be from HUR, and that this was, in fact, an FSB setup.

Memorial is scathing about the ‘treason’ charges under Article 275 of Russia’s criminal code.  Oksana Hladkykh (b. 11.09.1976) has four children, three of them under 18 (Sonya – 16; Vova – 13 and Zlata – 11).  She was left with no alternative but to take Russian citizenship, as the children would otherwise not be enrolled in school, and could be taken from her.  Given such coercion, it is absurd, Memorial says, to speak of ‘state treason’ with respect to the occupying state.

The prosecution had claimed that Hladkykh “had passed on to an employee of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence information about the location of Russian personnel and military equipment, as well as the coordinates of fortifications”.  Hladkykh herself calls the charges fabricated and says that the pretext for her ‘arrest’ was a photograph found on her telephone.

Memorial notes that she was essentially accused of having sent a person she was communicating with by Internet information which was not secret about Russian sites on occupied territory.  “These sites do not on principle have anything to do with Russia’s security as they are on the territory of another country.”

Hladkykh’s persecution is in violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War which strictly prohibits Russia as occupying state from applying its legislation on occupied territory.   The sentence (whether 14 or 13 years) is clearly entirely disproportionate, especially given that Hladkykh has three underage children.

In writing about the cassation appeal ruling on 31 January 2026, RIA South said that Hladkykh’s persecution had become a symbol of how Ukrainians are punished on occupied territory for remaining true to Ukraine.  Her neighbours from Dobrivka are convinced that she was seized because of her civic stand and because she was not afraid to speak the truth.

“Oksana was principled. From the outset, she opposed the invaders and was open in calling things by their proper name. She was not afraid to tell the invaders to their face what she thought of them. Her abduction was a warning to us all – so that we would be afraid to say a word against Russia.”

“Her only guilt is in being a Ukrainian and in the fact that she did not betray her country. That’s enough for them to imprison a person”,

As reported, much of the initial information about Oksana’s persecution came from an imprisoned Russian journalist Antonina Favorskaya and fellow Ukrainian political prisoner Yulia Koveshnikova.  Oksana also has an adult daughter, Oleksandra, from her first marriage.  She has explained that her stepfather drank and beat his wife, who took the children and moved from Dobrivka to the nearby urban settlement Pryazovske in Zaporizhzhia oblast.  The area came under Russian occupation almost immediately. According to Oleksandra, her mother was devastated by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and openly told the Russian military posted close to their home to “leave our country”.

Her mother was disturbed by the scurrilous post on 15 January 2023, Oleksandra says, adding that they did discuss trying to leave.  Oksana, however, had said that she had lived there for a long time, had friends there, and would find it hard to move.

The Russians came for Hladkykh on 24 November 2023.  The children were not allowed inside, from where they heard screams.  Their mother was taken away, with the Russians initially claiming that this was for four days.  This was a brutal lie and Oksana Hladkykh was sentenced, for her patriotism and unwillingness to be cowered by the invaders, to a term of imprisonment higher than the sentences Russia regularly uses against murderers and other real criminals.

Ukraine worked with Starlink to create a whitelist/register all the Starlink terminals in use by the Ukrainian Armed Forces so that Starlink had a way to only turn off the Starlink terminals that the Russian military has bought and is using in violation of Starlink’s stated policies and terms of service. It has had some very significant results.

Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Fedorov, stated that starting today the “white lists” for Starlink are beginning to operate.

Machine translated from the Russian version of The Moscow Times:

Pumped up by trillions in spending on state defense orders and payments to those recruited to the front, Russia’s military economy is approaching a breaking point.

Government finance officials have warned President Vladimir Putin that an economic crisis could break out in the country in the coming months. Ob reports The Washington Post, citing a source in direct contact with these officials.

According to WaPo’s interlocutor, warnings to Putin are becoming increasingly persistent, and the crisis, according to officials, could come as early as the summer. Putin was warned that without further tax increases, the budget deficit would continue to rise due to falling oil and gas revenues, and the banking system was under increasing pressure due to high interest rates and large amounts of loans to finance the war, WaPo writes.

There are three to four months left before the onset of the crisis, one of the Moscow top managers told the publication. According to him, there are more and more signs of inflation much higher than the 6% declared by the authorities, despite the record tough policy of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation with a key rate of 16%. The future crisis is also indicated by the forced layoffs of thousands of workers and a pandemic-record wave of restaurant and bar closures in Moscow, a WaPo source said.

After two years of military boom, when GDP grew by more than 4% per year, the Russian economy fell into a severe depression. Last year there was growth slowed down up to 1%, out of 28 civil industries 20 they started to fall, and companies —from small to large — began to experience problems with debt repayment en masse. According to the Central Bank, there are more than 10 trillion rubles of loans on bank balance sheets became problematic. In fact, a latent banking crisis began in the country they warned in February, TsMAKP experts.

The Russian budget, despite two waves of tax increases, may receive an astronomical one this year deficit 10 trillion rubles due to a reduction in oil purchases by India and discounts at $30 per barrel (according to non-public government calculations). And if we compensate for the shortfall in oil and gas revenues at the expense of the National Welfare Fund, then we will have to spend almost all of the fund’s free money — 4.1 trillion rubles.

More at the link.

📉Russian oil and gas revenues are dropping rapidly.

As January monthly revenue drops to half of last year, Gazprombank experts predict low oil prices will completely drain the National Wealth Fund within a year.

The oncoming crash will be one for the history books.📉🫟

Trump and his extra-Special Envoy had some thoughts about Russia and Ukraine today. I’m not saying they’re good thoughts.

The Russians are doing things like expending most of their efforts targeting Ukrainian civilians and civilian targets, especially Ukraine’s power generation and transmission infrastructure, civilian residences, Ukraine’s ports, their agricultural sector, monasteries and churches. That sort of thing.

Trump: “Because of the cold — extreme cold — I personally asked President Putin not fire on Kyiv and the cities and towns for a week. He agreed to do that.”

What good things? Russia bombing a passenger train, blowing people to pieces, burning them alive, and forcing mothers with newborns to jump out of the train in terror for their lives? Or the humanitarian

disaster russia caused in Kyiv, where people freeze to death in their homes—especially the elderly, too weak and cold to seek help, with no phones to call anyone after days without power? Or maybe when Russia murders, with drones, a married couple simply walking away from the frontline?

Additionally, we now know it takes Russia about ten days to regenerate enough ordnance for the next round of major strikes on Ukrainian power generation and transmission facilities.

Russian mass Blitz air raids on Ukraine occur about every 10 days – it takes fascist Russia that long to stockpile drones and missiles and prepare the attack. There were big attacks on Jan. 9 and Jan. 20, so the next attack window opens Jan. 30 – just as temperatures dip again.

Thank You, America, for the Efforts to Halt Strikes on Energy. We Hope the United States Can Make This Happen – Address by the President

29 January 2026 – 21:34

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

First and foremost, gratitude to our energy workers and repair crews – to everyone who is truly working around the clock to provide more electricity to people. The task is extremely difficult, given the scale of the Russian strikes that have taken place. Today, during the coordination call, we heard reports from most regions where problems persist – with a significant number of daily outages. Maximum resources were deployed. The situation remains most difficult – as before – in Kyiv, especially due to heating issues. More than 450 apartment buildings in several districts of Kyiv are without heat, most of them as a result of the strikes. There is also a significant number of heating failures. In many cases, these situations have to be addressed manually. The Government of Ukraine, the capacities of state-owned companies, and other regions of our country are engaged in providing assistance. Just as with the supply of weapons to Ukraine, the Ministry of Energy is now working on a daily basis on the supply of energy equipment – tracking every single agreement with our partners and all commitments of support for Ukraine to ensure all of them are implemented. What our partners have in stock and in production is also under virtually constant monitoring – including logistics to Ukraine and deployment in Ukraine. The process must be, and is, as clear and precise as possible.

Kharkiv and the region – recovery is ongoing after the strikes; the circumstances were difficult. Chernihiv, Sumy, Kyiv region, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih and the entire Dnipro region, Poltava region, our Donetsk region, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv region, Odesa, Kropyvnytskyi and the region, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi, Khmelnytskyi, and Zhytomyr regions – for each of them, we are recording needs and the possibilities to provide assistance. It is important that the private sector is supporting communities and that government officials are launching special budget support programs to purchase essential items – generators and other equipment. A program is already in place that enables residential buildings to receive funds – from 100,000 to 300,000 hryvnias – for autonomous power supply. The Prime Minister has prepared a grant program for small businesses – for fuel for generators and for repairs to energy equipment. Zero-interest loans are already available for sole proprietors and small entrepreneurs to purchase generators and batteries. Additional programs will also be introduced. Government officials will present all the details – the Prime Minister, the Ministers for Restoration and Energy, and the team of the President’s Office are also working on this. Thank you to everyone for the support.

There was a report by the Security Service of Ukraine – by Oleksandr Poklad. Most importantly, the Security Service is neutralizing threats that, unfortunately, still persist against our state and Ukrainian citizens. Every result Ukraine achieves in defense is also a result in bringing peace closer. Poklad reported on Russian operations that were successfully blocked. I am grateful for this. We are neutralizing the enemy.

There was a report today by the Commander-in-Chief on the situation at the front. The Huliaipole sector, the Pokrovsk sector, and the defense in our Kharkiv region – we are holding our positions. It is important that Ukrainian units are strong; through this strength, they are adding resilience to our entire state.

Almost every hour, our negotiating team is in contact, including Rustem Umerov and other members of the delegation. We are communicating with our partners – with the American side – about truly effective formats and truly necessary results. Ukraine is ready for meetings, Ukraine is ready for decisions, and we expect our partners to be able to act as effectively as possible – in Europe, in the United States, everywhere. Exactly as required for a lasting peace. We don’t miss out on any opportunity to achieve peace and guarantee security. Thank you, America, for the efforts to halt strikes on energy. We hope the United States can make this happen. There is a statement today by the President of the United States. The situation tonight and over these days – the real situation at our energy facilities and in our cities – will show how things stand.

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy also presented awards to Ukrainian military personnel.

We Honor and Remember All Those Who Fought So That Ukraine Could Live – Volodymyr Zelenskyy During the Presentation of the Highest State Awards to Warriors

29 January 2026 – 17:39

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the Orders of the Golden Star to Heroes of Ukraine and presented the awards to the families of fallen Heroes, as well as bestowed the Cross of Military Merit on Ukrainian warriors.

“Today is a landmark historical date – the Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of Kruty. Our state holds deep respect for all those who stood up to defend Ukraine, for all our heroes of different eras. More than a hundred years ago, at the beginning of the occupation of our Crimea, during the fighting in the east of our country, and in this full-scale war for our independence – for Ukraine’s independence,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The memory of all those who gave their lives so that Ukraine could live was honored with a moment of silence.

The President emphasized that it is precisely the tenacity and courage of our people – all those who ensure Ukraine’s strength and resilience – that make it possible for Ukraine to live. Today, millions of Ukrainians are united around the goal of securing independence for the state and a free and safe life on their own land.

“It is crucial not to lose unity. To achieve a real, meaningful result for Ukraine. A life that a free, independent state wants – a free, independent Ukraine. The security that we need. The freedom that is not simply won, not just for a single historic moment, but truly secured – preserved for many years and generations to come,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.

The Head of State presented the Orders of the Golden Star to the families of fallen Heroes of Ukraine. The highest title was awarded posthumously to:

Police Major Dmytro Ahatyev (National Police of Ukraine). In February last year, in the Donetsk region, he led an assault group tasked with demolishing enemy positions. While mining a building, he sustained a leg injury, and his brother-in-arms suffered a concussion as a result of a Russian FPV drone strike. Despite this, Dmytro Ahatyev completed the mining operation and evacuated his brother-in-arms. The enemy position, ten occupiers, and ammunition were destroyed. However, during the return, Dmytro Ahatyev was killed in an FPV drone attack.

Junior Lieutenant Pavlo Bessarab. In 2022, he defended Sumy and the region. He took part in combat near Verkhnia Syrovatka and in the liberation of Steblianka. He carried out sabotage operations behind enemy lines and contributed to the destruction of five combat vehicles and 20 occupiers, as well as to the seizure of data on an S-300 air defense system. In January 2024, Pavlo Bessarab was killed in action while covering his brothers-in-arms.

Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Yemets. In the spring of 2022, he commanded a reconnaissance company of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade in the Luhansk region. He personally destroyed an enemy tank but was wounded. After treatment, he returned to service as the commander of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade. From 2023, as part of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, he fought in the Donetsk region. Under his command, more than 800 occupiers and about 15 armored vehicles were destroyed. Maksym Yemets was killed near Pokrovsk on February 4, 2025.

Junior Lieutenant Mykola Myronenko (National Guard of Ukraine). From 2023, he took part in combat near Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. Despite an enemy attack, he provided medical assistance to wounded brothers-in-arms and evacuated them to shelter. During the battle, he was wounded but destroyed an occupier and provided fire cover for the medical team. Mykola Myronenko was killed on June 21, 2024, as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.

Major Vasyl Polahniuk (National Guard of Ukraine). He carried out combat missions in the Luhansk region and destroyed more than ten occupiers. In May 2024, under heavy artillery fire, he evacuated wounded brothers-in-arms. During another attack, an enemy shell struck the position, causing Vasyl Polahniuk to sustain multiple shrapnel gunshot wounds and burns to his arms and legs. Medics fought for his life, but on May 12, 2024, Vasyl Polahniuk died in hospital.

Soldier Dmytro Shylov. In April 2024, near Krasnohorivka, he thwarted an enemy offensive attempt and destroyed two occupiers. He ensured the consolidation of the combat group and evacuated a wounded soldier. He later helped evacuate another group of brothers-in-arms. Dmytro Shylov was killed on May 23, 2024, when he moved forward to cover the retreat of his brothers-in-arms.

Senior Soldier Vasyl Shkvarok. From May 2023, he took part in combat operations in the Donetsk region, in the areas of Prechystivka, Blahodatne, and Urozhaine. During assault actions, he destroyed ten occupiers, hit an infantry fighting vehicle with a grenade launcher, and cleared an enemy dugout. He repeatedly ensured the evacuation of wounded brothers-in-arms. Vasyl Shkvarok was killed on August 19, 2023, during Russian shelling.

Senior Lieutenant Vladyslav Shchelynskyi. From February 2022, he defended Ukraine near Shyrokyne and later in Mariupol. While encircled at the Azovstal metallurgical plant, he commanded an artillery battery. He destroyed two infantry fighting vehicles, two tanks, an armored personnel carrier, and more than 30 occupiers, and, together with a self-propelled howitzer, conducted a raid beyond the plant’s perimeter and eliminated an enemy command post. Vladyslav Shchelynskyi was killed on March 22, 2022, during a Russian airstrike.

The President also personally awarded the Order of the Golden Star to six Heroes of Ukraine. They are:

Soldier Serhii Kotenko. Since August 2024, he has been taking part in combat in the Pokrovsk sector. From May to August 2025, for 75 consecutive days, he held a position near the settlement of Kotlyne, repelled about 20 enemy assault attempts, and prevented a breakthrough of the defensive line. From June to August 2025 alone, he destroyed more than 20 occupiers.

Colonel Hennadii Kutsyi (National Guard of Ukraine). In May last year, in the Donetsk region, he prevented a breakthrough of the frontline during a Russian offensive. He successfully planned a defense with mine barriers, mortar and sniper positions, and personally led a group of warriors that advanced toward the enemy, eliminating and wounding more than 30 occupiers. In late May, near Chasiv Yar, using aerial reconnaissance, he detected an enemy sabotage group, set up an ambush, destroyed three occupiers, and forced the rest to retreat.

Lieutenant Colonel Volodymyr Ovsiienko (State Border Guard Service of Ukraine). He commands artillery units of the National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine named after Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. Under his leadership, defenders are holding a defensive line of more than 60 kilometers in the Sumy region and have destroyed nearly 1,000 occupiers, 900 fortification structures, 35 ammunition and fuel and lubricants depots, and 15 armored vehicles, tanks, and Tigr armored vehicles.

Junior Sergeant Artem Rezonov. Since October 2024, under constant Russian shelling, he has held positions in the Donetsk region and commanded a Javelin team. Together with his brothers-in-arms, he repelled about 60 assaults and eliminated approximately 40 occupiers. From July 2025, for 65 days, he commanded the defense of positions near Hrodivka, where more than 50 enemy assaults were repelled.

Senior Sergeant Myron Chernovol (National Guard of Ukraine). In 2025, near Hlyboke, during engineering works, he spotted an enemy sabotage group and engaged in combat, destroying five occupiers and forcing the enemy to retreat. Later, while repelling an enemy assault, he led an operational group, successfully took up positions, and initiated the defense. He personally destroyed five enemy soldiers and an infantry fighting vehicle. He coordinated the fire of adjacent units to decisively repel the offensive.

Colonel Maksym Yarosh (National Guard of Ukraine). He took part in combat operations in the Slobozhanskyi and Pokrovsk sectors. Together with a special operations unit, he eliminated more than 200 occupiers, wounded 400, and captured five invaders. His unit destroyed four enemy tanks, more than ten infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, over 90 vehicles, 40 UAVs, 14 ammunition depots, and 13 enemy positions and dugouts.

The Head of State also presented the Cross of Military Merit to servicemembers. The award was received by:

Soldier Oleksandr Aliksieienko and Junior Sergeant Oleksandr Tishaiev. Last year, for five months, they jointly held an observation post under daily Russian shelling. Oleksandr Aliksieienko was wounded, but due to constant shelling and weather conditions, the servicemembers could not be withdrawn from their positions. This became possible only on October 28, when fog set in. In addition, Oleksandr Aliksieienko distinguished himself by rescuing brothers-in-arms who were affected by gas munitions drops. Oleksandr Tishaiev, in turn, repeatedly assisted in the evacuation of Ukrainian servicemembers and in the defense of positions near the village of Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Sergeant Viktor Hrebin (National Guard of Ukraine, Azov). In March last year, he repelled an attempt by occupiers to break through into the rear of the Ukrainian warriors’ defenses. With accurate machine-gun fire, he destroyed five occupiers and a Tigr armored vehicle. Later, he fell into an enemy mine trap and sustained severe injuries, but he organized the withdrawal of his brothers-in-arms and, as a result, saved their lives.

Captain Vitalii Kravchuk (National Guard of Ukraine). In August 2025, in the Zaporizhzhia region, while retaking Russian positions, he commanded an assault group that destroyed approximately a squad of occupiers. Later, aerial reconnaissance detected a concentration of enemy forces. Vitalii Kravchuk led a group, advanced toward the enemy, and adjusted artillery fire, resulting in the destruction of four pieces of equipment and 15 occupiers.

Major Dmytro Pyatenko. In August last year, he held back the enemy near Yunakivka in the Sumy region. He skillfully organized the defense and the repelling of enemy assaults, contributing to the elimination of more than ten occupiers. In September, under his command, the enemy offensive toward Shakhove in the Pokrovsk area was halted, five infantry fighting vehicles were destroyed, and the enemy sustained losses in manpower.

From L’Europeista:

For over 400 days, Georgians have taken to the streets every day to protest against growing Russian influence, rigged elections and the country’s increasingly anti-European drift. In response, the ruling Georgian Dream party has introduced tougher repressive laws, tightening control over media, courts and public spaces.

Currently, Georgia has a higher per capita number of political prisoners than Russia, exceeding 100. Most arrests took place after the mass protests of November–December 2024 and again after October 4, 2025. Many detainees come from vulnerable social backgrounds or have serious health conditions, which further increases public sympathy.

Repression and propaganda on the rise

Yet instead of easing repression, the number of political prisoners has continued to grow. Alongside arrests, Georgian Dream has launched aggressive propaganda campaigns to discredit prisoners and, increasingly, their families, employing intimidation, fines, and financial pressures as punitive measures.

Families under pressure

In response, parents and relatives of those arrested during the pro-European demonstrations started a new civic movement: ‘For the freedom of prisoners of conscience’. Each member of this movement brings with them a unique story of resilience and bravery.

One of the most harrowing stories is that of Marina Terishvili, mother of prisoner of conscience Giorgi Terishvili. She has already lost a son, killed during a demonstration on 2 February 1992, during the Georgian civil war, fuelled by both internal political conflict and Russian interference. Now, his second son is facing imprisonment.

A mother’s testimony

“In 1992, people were fighting for freedom and my son sacrificed his life for it; the fight continues to this day and now my [other] son is detained,” says the mother of the prisoner of conscience.

Giorgi Terishvili was arrested on charges of participating in ‘gang violence’ during the ongoing protests. “Giorgi is being punished for his love of his homeland,” says Marina Terishvili. According to her, Giorgi participated in the demonstrations alone and did not even know the other detainees.

A punishment that goes beyond the individual

“What could have kept him at home, knowing where this government is dragging the country on the spilled blood of his brother? He attended every protest to honour his brother’s soul. He went to these protests alone, sometimes with his son, and I also went with him,’ she says.

Marizi Kobakhidze, mother of another prisoner of the regime, Tornike Goshadze, was fined GEL 5,000.

“When I visited my son in prison, they handed me a 5,000 GEL fine,” she explained.

Pride and resistance

“I will be proud of my son, while the children [of government authorities] will be ashamed of their mothers and fathers“.

Tornike Goshadze reiterates his determination in a letter sent from prison. He asks her mother to smile and writes that although she once dreamed of leaving the country, her main wish now is to stay in Georgia, even if it means remaining behind bars.

“I cannot be at peace even on the moon, knowing what condition my country and my people are in,” he writes.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Editor’s note: This story has been updated with a response from the White House.

A senior U.S. envoy involved in efforts to end Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine has displayed a lack of basic understanding of Ukraine’s political system and the war itself while speaking in a closed conversation with a small group of reporters, the Kyiv Independent has learned.

The official is engaged in high-level negotiations with both Moscow and Kyiv as Ukraine, Russia, and the United States reenter an active diplomatic phase under President Donald Trump’s renewed push to end the war.

During recent conversations with reporters, the U.S. official incorrectly claimed that Kyrylo Budanov, the recently appointed head of the President’s Office and former chief of military intelligence, now serves as Ukraine’s vice president.

“General Budanov is now their vice president,” the official said.

Ukraine does not have a vice president. Under the constitution, the president is the head of state, and if the president cannot perform their duties, authority temporarily passes to the chairperson of parliament.

The head of the President’s Office serves as the president’s top aide and chief of staff, overseeing daily operations, coordinating policy across government agencies, and managing relations with parliament, security institutions, and foreign partners.

The role is influential but does not carry constitutional executive powers.

The same U.S. official also appeared unaware of key facts about the war’s timeline. When asked whether Trump’s peace push was aimed at ending the war by its fourth anniversary on Feb. 24, the official suggested they did not know when the full-scale invasion began.

“I wasn’t aware of what that anniversary date was,” the top U.S. envoy answered. “I don’t think we feel pressure to because we have a four-year anniversary.”

The official went further, inaccurately claiming that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine has lasted longer than World War II.

That claim is misleading. Russia launched its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, and the war will enter its fifth year next month.

While it has now lasted longer than the German-Soviet war of 1941–1945, World War II as a whole began in September 1939 with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland and ended in 1945, making it a longer conflict overall.

The White House provided a statement in response to Kyiv Independent’s reporting.

“President Trump and his entire team have done more than anyone to stop the killing and bring peace to this brutal war, including by bringing both sides together for trilateral talks last weekend,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said.

“It’s pathetic that this ‘reporter’ was too scared to reach out to the White House for comment, as he does frequently, because he knows this story is nonsense and the United States has been working incredibly hard to save lives.”

The remarks have heightened concern in Kyiv about the composition and preparedness of Washington’s negotiating team.

Ya think?

Trump’s envoys tasked with resolving Russia’s war lack traditional diplomatic backgrounds, a departure from past U.S. practice. Oleksandr Merezhko, head of Ukraine’s parliament foreign affairs committee, described the situation as deeply troubling.

“This is a serious problem,” Merezhko told the Kyiv Independent. “(The envoy) has already made several big mistakes — both technical and, in essence, serious diplomatic ones.”

Merezhko said the U.S. official appears susceptible to Russian narratives and approaches negotiations through a transactional lens rather than a political or legal one.

“For example, (they) view territorial issues as real estate,” Merezhko said. “That is completely wrong. They do not know the basics — the fundamentals of politics, history, international law.”

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer told the Kyiv Independent that the U.S. official also lacks experienced advisors on Russia and Ukraine.

“By contrast, Putin, who has a deep understanding of the details of these negotiations, is usually accompanied by his foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov, who served nine years as Russia’s ambassador to the United States,” Pifer added.

In the face of Russia committing dozens, if not hundreds, of war crimes and crimes against humanity a day Trump and his team are still trying to manipulate Ukraine into surrendering:

The United States has told Ukraine that it must sign on to a peace deal with Russia in order to get U.S. security guarantees, Reuters writes.

By ‘signing on to a peace deal,’ they mean surrender. They suggest we surrender in exchange for *maybe* getting security guarantees…🤦‍♀️

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 28, 2026 at 10:52 AM

From Reuters:

WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) – The United States has told Ukraine that it must sign on to a peace deal with Russia in order to get U.S. security guarantees, a source familiar with internal discussions told Reuters on Tuesday.

U.S. security guarantees are considered by Ukraine as the linchpin for any settlement ending Russia’s four-year-old invasion of Ukraine. The United States brokered talks in Abu Dhabi between envoys for Ukraine and Russia last weekend that U.S. officials said made progress toward an agreement.

The Financial Times reported that the Trump administration has signalled to Ukraine that U.S. security guarantees depend on Kyiv agreeing to a peace deal, likely requiring it to cede the Donbas region to Russia.

But the source who spoke to Reuters said the United States is not telling Ukraine what has to be in the peace deal and that it is misleading to suggest that Washington is trying to force Ukraine into territorial concessions to Russia.

Russia and Ukraine negotiators are to meet again on Sunday in Abu Dhabi, with possible participation by U.S. officials. U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner came away from the talks last weekend optimistic that a deal could be reached soon.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday that a U.S. document on security guarantees for Ukraine was “100% ready” and Kyiv is now awaiting a time and place for it to be signed.

Zelenskiy has consistently said that Ukraine’s territorial integrity must be upheld in any peace deal to end the war.

Ukraine is increasingly uncertain whether Washington will commit to security guarantees, a senior Ukrainian official told the Financial Times, saying the U.S. “stops each time the security guarantees can be signed.”

More at the link.

It is important to keep in mind that there is no actual deal to agree to. That every time an even remotely plausible proposal is made, Putin adds several new conditions and blows up the negotiations. All while continuing to blow up Ukrainian civilians and civilian targets.

It is also important to remember that there is no agreement or treaty that Putin has actually ever honored.

OTD in 2003 Prez & then Ukrainian president signed “Treaty Between the Russian Federation and Ukraine on the Russian–Ukrainian State Border”. It set Ukraine’s borders as they were in 1991 & was lodged with the UN.

So you can trust Russia on a new deal on Ukraine’s borders

We Know That the Russians Are Preparing a New Strike – Our Intelligence Indicates This – Address by the President

28 January 2026 – 20:49

Wishing you good health!

A brief update for today. In all regions where it’s needed, repair crews and necessary services have been deployed to carry out restoration work. The situation is most difficult in Kyiv right now, primarily with heating, and there are also major electricity problems. Crews from many of our regions, practically from all over the country, have been brought in to assist Kyiv, including from frontline areas, ready to help. I also want to thank for the help from Ukrzaliznytsia, other state-owned companies, and the entire private sector – everyone supporting the people. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is providing hot meals in Kyiv districts where this is needed. Just in the past 24 hours, 6,200 people in Kyiv and 22,000 people in the Kyiv region received hot meals. We are ready to scale up this assistance if necessary. I expect reports on all the tasks assigned for work with partners. Equipment should have been sourced and procured well before this winter, and Kyiv city authorities must act much faster now to make life easier for people, at least in February, especially since everyone in the government is ready to help.

I receive regular updates on the situation in Chernihiv, Sumy, and Dnipro regions. In Kryvyi Rih, heating was being restored throughout the day – this morning, more than two hundred buildings were still without heat following a Russian strike. Kharkiv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia regions – I want to thank everyone working to keep people warm and supplied with electricity. There are also significant outages in Poltava, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, and Chernivtsi regions.

I spoke with the President of France. Emmanuel acknowledged the challenges we face. We discussed the assistance Ukraine needs most urgently right now. We are counting on Europe’s support. It is crucial that leaders and states do not remain silent about what is happening, do not remain silent about the fact that the Russians are still trying to inflict as much pain as possible on Ukrainians, regardless of any diplomacy.

We also know that the Russians are preparing a new strike – our intelligence indicates this. Now the United States, Europe, and all our partners have to understand how this discredits diplomatic talks. Every single Russian strike does. Today, in the Kyiv region, the Russians killed a woman and her husband. People were simply in their own apartment. My condolences to their family and loved ones. A four-year-old child was rescued. I want to thank Maryan Kushnir, a journalist at Radio Liberty, a war correspondent, who acted courageously and saved this little girl. Much depends on the fact that our people do not lose courage. The day before, the Russians struck an ordinary civilian train with drones. There were fatalities and injuries. On that train was a Ukrainian sergeant – a warrior of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade – Vladyslav Rozhkovskyi, call sign Omar. He did not panic and spared no effort to help others. I want to thank you, Vladyslav! I thank everyone who is doing everything possible – and the impossible – right now to save as many people, as many lives, as they can. Today, I spoke with Tata Kepler – a Ukrainian volunteer who has contributed greatly to the development of our tactical medicine and to saving the lives of our warriors. Ukrainian surgeons, Ukrainian doctors are performing incredible operations, saving lives amid war. This expertise must be scaled up, and it must be supported – not just with words, but with decisions and through the development of our state institutions. We agreed that Tata, together with currently serving military medics, will propose ways to advance the preparation of our warriors, specifically in medical skills: treating injuries, combat trauma, helping a brother or sister-in-arms, conducting faster and better evacuations, and making Ukrainian tactical medicine even stronger. There is much to be done, and there is expertise that must be shared. I thank everyone who is working on this effort.

There was a briefing from Major General Khmara, focused primarily on the combat operations of the Security Service of Ukraine, including both our frontline – particularly the actions of our Alpha unit – and the entirely justified SSU activities on the aggressor’s territory in response to all strikes, in response to all the Russian evil that came to our land. I am proud of our special forces. We also discussed oversight of all processes in military production. Absolute clarity is essential, and everything Ukraine needs must be produced exactly as Ukraine requires, without any chance for Russian sabotage or any internal rot: corruption or similar abuses. Much of this is the responsibility of the Security Service of Ukraine – to ensure real integrity in these processes.

And one more thing.

When there are so many diplomatic efforts to end this war – when the Americans are negotiating with the Russians and the Europeans are trying as well – all this diplomacy must carry real weight for the people, real significance in the current situation. When Russian strikes continue, when assaults are ongoing, it is hard for people to feel that diplomacy is constructive or can produce results. Everyone who truly wants peace must think about how to ensure that the Russians are preparing not for new massive attacks but for ending the war. The world has the power to make this happen. We just need to use that power – for the sake of peace. I thank everyone who approaches the situation exactly this way.

Glory to Ukraine!

From Civil Georgia:

The ruling Georgian Dream party has announced a series of legislative amendments that would impose further restrictions and penalties on recipients of grants and foreign funding.

The proposals would broaden the scope of what is considered a “grant” that would require government approval. Criminal responsibility and jail sentences will be imposed for violations related to grants. Leaders of parties receiving foreign funding will be prosecuted, and “external lobbying” will be criminalized. New restrictions will also be imposed on political party members and entrepreneurs.

The proposed changes were announced by Georgian Dream’s parliamentary majority leader, Irakli Kirtskhalia, late on January 28, and are set to be adopted after the disputed parliament returns for a spring session on February 3. They follow the earlier waves of repressive legislation targeting media, civil society, and political opposition.

The changes would, among other things, require government approval for foreign organizations seeking to provide grants to their own local branches, for foreign-registered entities mostly engaged in activities related to Georgia, and for foreign actors hiring experts in Georgia. Those who breach the provisions of the Law on Grants will face criminal liability of up to six years in jail.

The amendments to the Law on Political Associations will bar individuals employed by foreign-funded entities from party membership for eight years. Georgian Dream also introduces substantial administrative fines for entrepreneurial entities “engaging in public political activity unrelated to their core business operations,” as well as prison sentences for those conducting lobbying abroad on matters related to Georgia.

Changes to the Law on Grants

The proposed changes to the controversial Grants Law, which already foresees mandatory government approval for donors prior to disbursing local grants, include:

  • The definition of “grant” which will need government approval is extended to include “any funds transferred by any person to any person, in monetary or natural form, that are used or may be used for activities carried out or to be carried out with the belief or intent of exerting any influence on the Government of Georgia, state institutions, or any part of society, that are directed toward the formulation, implementation, or alteration of Georgia’s domestic or foreign policy, as well as used or may be used for activities arising from the political or public interests, approaches, or relations of a foreign government or a foreign political party.”
  • The law introduces the concept of a “legal entity of another state whose activities involve substantive engagement with issues related to Georgia” and allows such entities to receive grants only upon the government’s approval. “For example, an organization registered abroad but carrying out activities mostly in Georgia would be required to apply to the Government of Georgia in order to receive funding,” Kirtskhalia said, warning of criminal liability for those who do not comply.
  • Funds transferred in monetary or in-kind form shall also be considered a grant if, in return, “the grant recipient provides technical assistance in the form of sharing technologies, specialized knowledge, skills, expertise, through services and/or other types of assistance.” According to Kirtskhalia, if a “foreign power” hires experts in Georgia in exchange for money, those funds will be regarded as a grant and require govenrment’s consent.
  • If a “representation, branch, or subdivision of a non-resident legal entity” receives a grant, including from the legal entity of which it is a branch, that branch will also require the government’s approval. Failure to comply will result in an administrative fine equal to twice the grant amount.
  • Failure to comply with the provisions of the Law on Grants will result in criminal liability, with a penalty of a fine, community service for a term of 300 to 500 hours, or imprisonment for up to six years. The Criminal Code will also contain an “aggravating circumstance” of “money laundering, with the goal of carrying out activities on Georgia’s political issues,” punishable by a prison term of 9-12 years.

New Restrictions for Party and Political Activities

Per the announced changes, the leader of a political party that receives foreign funding in violation of the Law on Political Associations will face criminal punishment, including a fine, community service for 300 to 500 hours, or imprisonment of up to six years.

Also, changes to the Law on Political Associations will bar those who work for an organization “where more than 20% of annual income is received from a foreign power” from membership in a political party for a period of eight years.

In the same law, the term “having a declared electoral objective” will be replaced by “declared party-political objective,” which, Kirtskhalia said, will ensure “substantive clarification, expansion of scope, and an increase of effectiveness” of the regulation. According to him, the restrictions applying to political parties, including criminal liability on receiving foreign funding, will extend to the subjects “with declared party-political objectives.”

Criminalising ‘External Lobbying’

Also according to the speaker, “direct or indirect transfer of money, securities, other property, benefits deriving from property, or any other advantage to a citizen or legal entity of another state in exchange for carrying out activities on political issues related to Georgia will entail a fine, community service for a term of 300 to 500 hours, or imprisonment for a term of up to six years.”

Restrictions on Entrepreneurs

Georgian Dream also introduces an administrative offense for entrepreneurial entities “engaging in public political activity that is not related to its core entrepreneurial activities.” The violation carries a fine of 20,000 GEL, while a repeated offense will incur a fine of 40,000 GEL.

Beijing is supplying microchips, bearings, radar and electronic warfare components, optics, and measurement equipment worth billions. The total value is at least $10.3 billion, helping Russia bypass sanctions and sustain military production.

— WarTranslated (Dmitri) (@wartranslated.bsky.social) January 28, 2026 at 2:01 PM

From The Telegraph:

China is sending tools to help Russia build its nuclear-capable hypersonic missile that Vladimir Putin is using to threaten the West.

Russian troops fired the 8,000mph Oreshnik missile at the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, just 40 miles from Poland’s border, earlier this month.

The hypersonic ballistic missile, which has only been used twice in combat, can deploy six warheads mid-flight that strike different targets.

The Telegraph can reveal that specialised manufacturing machines and tools are being used to build the warheads, which can be carried by missiles that are capable of striking Europe in less than 20 minutes.

The tools are part of $10.3bn (£7.7bn) worth of technology and advanced equipment, identified by The Telegraph, that China has sent to Russia to help Moscow build military-grade kit and expand its weapons production.

Russia has said the Oreshnik missile is impossible to shoot down, while Ukrainian officials and analysts have warned it is a threat to the West.

Increased production is in part thanks to one specific CNC (computer numerical control) machine – a carousel lathe made in China, which turns and cuts metal.

This specific lathe has been identified by Ukrainian defence intelligence at the state-owned Votkinsk plant, Russia’s foremost missile production facility and sanctioned by the UK, US, EU and Japan.

Votkinsk makes the Oreshnik missile as well as the Iskander-M ballistic missiles and Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles.

China has sent billions of dollars’ worth of other components that Moscow needs for the assembly of its precision-guided weapons and jets, analysis shows.

These are components that Russia either cannot make at home or cannot produce at necessary volumes. All are on a list of 50 common high-priority goods that 39 countries, including the UK and US, have agreed to bar from export to Moscow.

China, however, never signed up to Western sanctions on Russia. It has supplied at least $4.9bn of microchips and memory boards, which power precision-guided weapons and Sukhoi fighter jets, according to Import Genius, a US trade data aggregator, for this investigation.

Other key items include $130m of various kinds of ball bearings, which carries loads, reduces friction and allows movement, making them vital for construction of aircraft and other vehicles.

“Anything you know that moves uses ball bearings,” Michael Kofman, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment, told The Telegraph. “They have to be manufactured with precision and go into everything.”

China has also sent at least $97m of mounted piezoelectric crystals, found in radar and electronic warfare systems, and $42m worth of telescopic sights that can be fitted to weapons.

The imports from China have allowed Vladimir Putin to skirt Western sanctions to build more weapons like the Oreshnik, boost Russia’s self-sufficiency and insulate its defence prowess from global sanctions.

“The area Russia has been most vulnerable is in precision machine tools,” said Mr Kofman.

“The best equipment is made in Western countries, [but] China is able to make machine tools that are good enough for many of Russia’s purposes today,” Mr Koffman, who specialises in Russia and Ukraine’s militaries, said.

“It is very clear that without access to the Chinese economy, Chinese market and China as a pass-through for a lot of these goods and technology, Russia would have very much struggled to sustain this war.”

In the first three years of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China sent at least $3.1bn of machine tools to Moscow.

The technology is far more damaging for Ukraine – and the West – than the hundreds of artillery shells sent by other allies like Iran, which deplete quickly and have little long-term impact.

Chinese CNC machines, for instance, have been procured in mass quantities. They support defence production at a range of Russian defence facilities, including in the Alabuga special economic zone churning out domestic versions of the Iranian Shahed drones.

“One thing that has dogged the Russian defence industry is the speed of production. A lot of their factories are very old-fashioned – they don’t produce aircraft or engines very quickly or very well,” said Nick Reynolds, research fellow for land warfare at Rusi, a UK defence think tank.

“That’s why you’re seeing imports being of such high importance,” he said. “The Chinese manufacturing ecosystem is leaps and bounds ahead of the Russian manufacturing sector.”

To guarantee high-quality defence production in Russia, China is also sending key testing instruments, such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 28, 2026 at 2:24 PM

From The Telegraph:

Slovakia’s prime minister privately told European leaders he was worried about Donald Trump’s “psychological state”, according to diplomats.

Robert Fico, an ally of the US president, told counterparts at an emergency EU summit that his face-to-face meeting with the US president had been “shocking”.

Mr Fico – one of the few EU leaders to support Mr Trump’s stance on Europe’s weakness – said the president came across as “dangerous” during their meeting at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Jan 17, two diplomats told Politico.

One said the Slovakian prime minister went further, characterising Mr Trump as “out of his mind”, while another said he seemed “traumatised” by his encounter with the US president.

The remarks were made by Mr Fico during an informal huddle between a small group of EU leaders and senior officials on the sidelines of the summit last week. The summit had been convened amid renewed tensions in transatlantic relations following Mr Trump’s threats to seize Greenland.

None of the diplomats who spoke to Politico were present at the discussion, but all said they had been briefed shortly afterwards by leaders who took part.

Earlier this month, Trump threatened tariffs on several European countries and refused to rule out using force to take control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, before later softening his stance.

Even without Mr Fico’s comments, concern about the US president’s “unpredictability” is growing among Europe’s leaders and senior officials, according to one of the diplomats, who was not briefed directly by a leader on last week’s conversation.

Fears about the 79-year-old US president’s health are “rapidly becoming a more conversed topic at all levels”, said one EU official involved in cross-capital discussions.

The US:

There is a strange misconception in the U.S. government that the war in Ukraine is about the territory of Donbas. They believe it because… putin said so? They just cant stop repeating nonsense about giving up Donbas, right?

It is not a war for Donbas. It is a war to destroy Ukraine as a state,

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 28, 2026 at 6:28 PM

strip away its independence, erase Ukrainian culture, expand the russian empire, and carve Putin’s name into history as a new emperor, or something close.

In this context, giving up the most fortified territory of Ukraine – the remaining part of Donetsk region – without a fight

would be the stupidest move. It simply cannot happen. Because once Russia takes the most fortified territory of Ukraine without resistance, it gains better ground to attack further, to reach its goal, and to destroy Ukraine. And it absolutely, undoubtedly will do just that.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 28, 2026 at 6:28 PM

I’ve written here before that Russia worked very hard to set the information environment with its preferred framing starting between 2009 and 2011 depending on when you want to date the beginning of the line of effort. This is a key element to how Russia sets a theater for war. Trump and his natsec team do not realize this reality, in fact most don’t, and are constantly getting played by Putin as a result.

🇺🇸❗️Russian troops are actively using equipment from the American company Ubiquiti to build communication systems and control drones, according to HunterBook investigation, – Militarnyi

The company’s radio bridges make up about 80% of all Russian equipment of this type used at the front.

Ubiquiti radio bridges, antennas and network equipment are regularly recorded at the positions of Russian units along the front line in Ukraine.

— MAKS 25 👀🇺🇦 (@maks23.bsky.social) January 27, 2026 at 4:35 PM

From Hunterbrook:

  • Ubiquiti radio bridge antennae serve a critical communications need for the Russian military in Ukraine, including for drone operations, according to our investigation. A Ukrainian communications officer estimated 80% of Russian radio bridges they’d observed on the battlefield were made by Ubiquiti. “Ubiquiti is made for regular people — basically plug-and-play. Tons of tutorials on YouTube,” the officer explained. “There is no alternative,” a Russian vendor told Hunterbrook. The U.N. has called Russia’s drone attacks against civilians crimes against humanity.
  • Hunterbrook identified at least nine Russian military units accused of war crimes, or individuals associated with those units, that use Ubiquiti equipment in Ukraine, based on a review of Telegram posts and open-source materials. One fundraising group that said it had donated Ubiquiti antennae to Russian forces is run by a terrorist convicted of the 2015 bombing of a Ukrainian government building.
  • Hunterbrook tested how easily export-banned Ubiquiti equipment could reach Russian forces. Posing as a Russian military procurement officer, a reporter contacted Russian vendors and multiple official Ubiquiti distributors worldwide. Nearly a dozen agreed to sell export-banned equipment. One vendor even shared thank-you letters they said were for providing Ubiquiti equipment to the Russian military. Official distributors, including U.S.-based Multilink Solutions, agreed to ship to third countries like Turkey for pickup even after the customer identified as being based in Russia — a known sanctions evasion tactic flagged by U.S. authorities.
  • The total value of Ubiquiti shipments crossing the border into Russia surged 66% after the invasion despite U.S. and EU sanctions and export controls, according to Hunterbrook’s analysis of trade records. Shipments include the latest Ubiquiti models released after the ban, suggesting ongoing access to the company’s supply chain.
  • Official Ubiquiti distributors appear to have continued supplying Russia after the invasion, sometimes rerouting shipments through intermediaries in high-diversion-risk countries like Turkey and Kazakhstan, trade records show. Some appear to have used intermediaries later sanctioned by the U.S. for export control evasions.
  • Russian vendors use Ubiquiti’s trademarked name and logos despite Russian intellectual property laws that would allow quick takedowns and potential criminal prosecution for infringers. In 2025, Ubiquiti filed to protect its stylized “U” logo in Russia with the Russian federal intellectual property agency — and won — but took no apparent action against these Russian vendors.
  • Ubiquiti’s global distribution network is riddled with compliance red flags beyond Russia. In Paraguay, the founder and president of Flytec Computers — once responsible for 13% of Ubiquiti’s revenues — has been accused of smuggling, massive tax evasion, and money laundering in Brazil, and of involvement with the illegal housing of a large-scale bitcoin mining operation. In Mexico, Ubiquiti distributor SYSCOM was quietly acquired in 2021 by Hikvision, a Chinese state-owned company the U.S. designated that same year as part of China’s military-industrial complex.
  • More than a decade after Ubiquiti was fined for “reckless disregard” for sanctions obligations when its products ended up in Iran, Hunterbrook found Ubiquiti products may be still flowing there. A current official distributor listed on Ubiquiti’s website, Yemen-based Alfa Tech, may be operating branches in Shiraz and Tehran, according to its own Persian-language advertisements. In 2014, U.S. regulators fined Ubiquiti after at least $589,000 worth of prohibited equipment was diverted to sanctioned Iranian entities. CEO Robert Pera told Forbes at the time, “It can’t happen again. If it does, I’ll be in a lot of trouble.”
  • Ubiquiti openly admits “we do not have any visibility” over purchases from its distributors, but legal experts told Hunterbrook that’s not a viable defense. U.S. export controls and sanctions operate on a strict liability basis — meaning, even unwitting violations are still violations. “Ignorance is not really a practical excuse, or rather, a legal excuse,” a former senior State Department sanctions official told Hunterbrook. A sanctions compliance lawyer added, “You, doing very little effort, were able to determine that it’s available for purchase by the Russian armed forces. … The company’s compliance team should be taking additional steps to prevent that.”
  • Industry experts told Hunterbrook that Ubiquiti likely has the technical means to trace products appearing inside Russia — and may already be doing so. As of September 2025, Ubiquiti appeared to have placed an IP-based ban on firmware updates for Russian users, based on complaints on a Russian forum, suggesting the company can identify device locations. Experts said Ubiquiti could even trace specific hardware back to the original distributor through serial numbers and MAC addresses. Ubiquiti shut down a user forum discussion raising concerns about its Russia business with the message, “Your post violates community guidelines.”

I know everyone is still trying to deal with the weekend’s events, so I’m going to just run through the basics again tonight.

The cost:

Today, Ukraine’s rescue community suffered a painful loss. During emergency response work at an energy facility in Kyiv, Oleksandr Pytaichuk, a high-angle rescuer was killed.

He stood between chaos and normal life — so homes could have light and heat. Oleksandr was only 31…

Statement by the President of Ukraine During a Joint Press Conference with the Presidents of Lithuania and Poland

25 January 2026 – 19:24

Dear Gitanas, thank you very much for the invitation, the warm words, and the support for Ukraine. The warm words of welcome.

Dear Karol, I am also very glad to see you. Thank you for today’s meeting.

I think, Gitanas, we understand that today is an important day, an important anniversary, but also – what is very important – that the three of us are together. I believe that these meetings can only strengthen the truly personal relations between our countries. I am very glad that our First Ladies are discussing specific humanitarian projects. I think all of this is very positive. Gitanas, I think you played an important role in bringing us together today; we have very warm relations. Thank you – to you, to your team, and to all Lithuanians.

I very much want us to always remain together going forward – Ukrainians, Lithuanians, and Poles. And today we were also joined by representatives – as I mentioned in my speech – representatives of Belarus, of a free Belarus. This sends a very clear message to everyone: the day will come when Belarus will be with us in Europe, together with all of us. And I am confident it will be exactly as the people of Belarus deserve.

We all must be effective in working together – in defending our sovereignty, our territorial integrity, in defending our peoples – everyone in our part of Europe and everyone across Europe. We all know what is required for this. I thank Lithuania, and I thank Poland for supporting Ukraine. Thank you for supporting our energy sector and our people. Right now, this is a very painful issue – people are living through the consequences of Russian strikes with drones and missiles. Energy equipment and other assistance coming from our European friends matters. Thank you for this. Today we spoke about Ukraine’s energy sector and how difficult things are for our people; we discussed how we can further support Ukrainians. We also talked about air defense and how we can strengthen Ukraine. Karol, Gitanas, and I agreed that our teams will continue working on the issues related to the SAFE and PURL initiative. These are very important programs that truly help us. By the way, the PURL initiative is already demonstrating its effectiveness. Thanks to this initiative, our European partners, our European friends can procure air defense missiles. This is extremely important for us. As for SAFE, the new European program, in my view it requires principled decisions: there must be a clear percentage allocated to cooperation and co-production with Ukraine. That is how results will be achieved – fast results.

Of course, we all need to continue working together, guided by our shared interests, to ensure that Europe’s institutions are fully effective. The European Union must be a global leader. We believe this is possible, including thanks to Ukraine’s experience – our wartime experience (in security terms), as well as technological and economic contributions to Europe’s collective strength. Ukraine must be in the European Union. We all understand this absolutely clearly. I am very glad that our partners – Lithuania and Poland – support Ukraine within the European Union. And for us, this is one of the guarantees – I have said this many times: one of the security guarantees for Ukraine is membership in the European Union. That is precisely why we always speak about 2027. Gitanas speaks about by 2030. He is, by the way, advocating Ukraine’s participation – our European membership. We count on support – particularly during Lithuania’s presidency. I just want to remind everyone once again that Lithuania’s presidency will be in 2027. Gitanas, don’t forget about that.

We spoke about our diplomatic work with partners, first and foremost with the United States. I informed Gitanas and Karol – briefly – about the talks that took place in the UAE. I hope that the U.S. will not reduce pressure on Russia over this war for the sake of diplomacy. Europe, likewise, must be resolute and continue applying pressure – sanctions pressure on Russia. Russian tankers transporting oil, including through the Baltic Sea, must be stopped completely. Russian ambitions – and their propaganda as well – must be blocked by all of us. This is a difficult task, but it is something we must all do. Russian schemes to circumvent sanctions must be cut off. These are the minimum fundamentals required for peace to be truly achieved. And I want to thank all of you for this, friends. Thank you to everyone in Europe who is helping. My sincere thanks once again to Lithuania. My sincere thanks once again to Poland.

Glory to Ukraine!

First Lady Zelenska met with representatives of a number of Lithuanian universities.

Leading Lithuanian Universities Have Joined the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies – Olena Zelenska

25 January 2026 – 22:52

While on a visit to Lithuania, First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska met with representatives of Lithuanian universities: Vytautas Magnus University, Mykolas Romeris University, Klaipėda University, and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. These institutions have joined the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies – an initiative dedicated to the study of Ukraine and Ukrainian studies at educational institutions worldwide. The Coalition already brings together 60 institutions in 23 countries.

“Russian imperial narratives continue to operate in many countries and shape Kremlin-driven public opinion. This is precisely why Ukrainian studies are needed: they will convey the truth about Ukraine from Ukraine itself. They will tell the story of centuries of oppression that Ukraine and Lithuania endured within the empire, of the difficult path of languages that were targeted for erasure and Russification, of the deportations of entire peoples, including the fate of Crimea and its people, who have suffered – and continue to suffer – new Russian repression,” the First Lady emphasized.

In addition, the First Ladies of Lithuania and Ukraine visited the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Vilnius together. The Center has operated under their patronage for nearly four years.

“The Ukrainian Cultural Center in Lithuania is unique. Nowhere else in the world is there such a center operating under the joint patronage of both states. My gratitude to Lithuania is boundless. I thank, in particular, Vytautas Magnus University, which provided premises for the Center, and personally my colleague, Mrs. Diana,” said the wife of the President of Ukraine.

Since its establishment in June 2022, the Center has hosted more than 4,600 events. It offers daily activities for children and adults, cultural and sports-and-wellness events, language courses, operates a Ukrainian Saturday school, and runs a children’s summer camp. It also hosts meetings that bring the international community together in support of Ukraine.

First Lady Zelenska also met with the First Ladies of Lithuania and Poland.

In Vilnius, Olena Zelenska Held Meetings with the First Ladies of Lithuania and Poland

25 January 2026 – 21:05

During a working visit to Lithuania together with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska met with First Lady of Lithuania Diana Nausėdienė.

Olena Zelenska thanked Diana Nausėdienė for her participation in the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, which is held annually in Kyiv.

“Over the years of the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, we have succeeded in drawing attention to sensitive international issues – war and child security, resilience, mental health, and education. I am glad to hear proposals regarding the next, sixth Summit, which we are already beginning to prepare,” the First Lady of Ukraine noted.

In addition, Vilnius hosted the first meeting between the wife of the President of Ukraine and the wife of the President of Poland, Marta Nawrocka.

“I am sincerely glad about our first personal meeting. I thank Poland and its citizens for their comprehensive and principled support for Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war, and for their resolute position on the international stage,” Olena Zelenska said.

The First Lady of Ukraine emphasized that cultural diplomacy, among many other areas, also contributes to bringing countries closer together. In cooperation with Polish institutions, 19 Ukrainian Bookshelves and 12 Ukrainian-language audio guides have already been launched, and cooperation with Polish universities is ongoing regarding joining the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies.

“Thank you for the video address to the fifth Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen. Its theme was education, and as one of the results, 17 peace lessons have already been held in 21 schools in Poland: Polish teenagers were able to watch the film created for the Summit about the stories of their Ukrainian peers, Snapshots from Ukraine: Untold Stories of Teenagers. Ukraine and Poland must use every opportunity to understand and accept one another and deny any chance to those who would seek to drive a wedge between our peoples,” the First Lady of Ukraine emphasized.

The First Ladies of Ukraine and Lithuania also visited the National Museum of Lithuania and viewed an exhibition dedicated to the January Uprising of 1863–1864 – a movement for liberation from the Russian Empire in which Ukrainians participated alongside Poles and Lithuanians.

“We have had many shared chapters, including a shared liberation struggle against empires – first the Russian Empire, and later the Soviet one. Our countries have lived through a difficult common experience that must be heard, understood, and remembered in order to preserve the independence of our states and ourselves within them,” the First Lady emphasized.

War for Ukraine Day 1,429: Russian War Ship – Go Fuck Yourself!

by Adam L Silverman|  January 23, 202611:31 pm| 14 Comments

This post is in: China, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

YY_Sima Qian asked the following in comments last night after I’d gone offline:

Adam, what do you make of the below perspective?

Stephen Wertheim @stephenwertheim

Trump has never been an isolationist; he wants to take things from the world, not withdraw from it. Nor does Trump make careful calculations of costs and benefits. He has always been a showman more than a businessman, and as president, he is guided above all by the performance of power. He wants to tell Americans, the world, and perhaps himself that he is in control and getting his way. More specifically, he is performing his vision of “peace through strength,” which involves both ending armed conflicts and using military force in targeted ways to display American might.

The irony is that Trump is supposed to put “America first” in all things, yet he lacks a coherent account of what American interests are. At least the original so-called isolationists of 1940 and 1941 had an identifiable understanding of U.S. interests: they contended that so long as the United States kept outside powers out of the Western Hemisphere, North America would remain secure from attack. They were not necessarily wrong on that point, even though their prescription might have been terrible for the world. Trump, by contrast, chafes at the global commitments he has inherited but has yet to relinquish any of them.

Evan A. Feigenbaum @EvanFeigenbaum

I was asked by @CarnegieEndow for a short comment on the Asia-related piece of the Trump Administration’s new National Security Strategy. I’ll be blunt: “The United States now asserts its primacy in the Western Hemisphere but is pursuing a National Security Strategy that also asserts preeminence in Asia, a far cry from the fantastical notion that it will ‘accept spheres of influence’ that curtail its role in the region. But it is doing so with diminishing credibility—offering rhetorical paeans to ‘openness, transparency, and trustworthiness’ while imposing tariffs on its closest allies, closing its market, coercing partners for investment, and curtailing technology flow. And it is attempting to do so on the cheap—taking a transactional approach to everyone and everything in Asia while withdrawing from the traditional U.S. role of providing security and economic related public goods. In fact, providing public goods has been the price of American preeminence. Since 1945, the United States has been the principal underwriter of Asia’s security and economic orders. Now, however, it has an almost entirely transactional approach and is using threats and coercion to extract what it wants. Bluntly put, the strategy for Asia is neither principled nor strategic: If it were principled, the United States would seek coalitions of the like-minded around shared ideas. If it were strategic, the United States would not pick fights with countries, such as India and Vietnam, that can help balance the rise of Chinese power. Asking allies to ‘step up’ is not the same as withdrawing public goods, trashing pacts and rules, and leveraging an array of coercive tools against the very partners one needs to foster a balance of power. In short, the United States is long on attitude, short on strategy. And it is simply inexplicable that North Korea, which can target the U.S. homeland with missile-delivered nuclear weapons, did not rate even a single mention. That is hardly America First.”

I think Wertheim is overthinking it. With the exception of a small number of longstanding desires and grievances, all Trump wants is whatever he wants in the moment, often whatever the last person he spoke with suggested to him, and he expresses that as whomever has it must capitulate immediately or else he’ll unleash American national power on them. Often what he wants in the moment gets shoehorned into his longstanding desires or grievances. So the Greenland stuff is rolled into his decades long hatred for NATO and the EU, as well as his desire for a personal friendship with Putin and the ability to do business in Russia. The Asia items that Feigenbaum is talking about is something similar. He wants to be the American Xi, he’s inherited all these economic, financial, and military relationships, often via treaty, and all he wants to do is line his own pockets, those of select favorites, and by buddies with Xi and, for some reason, Kim. It’s the Trump Doctrine that I delineated way back in 2016 – I, Donald J. Trump will be treated fairly or else – over all else. With the treated fairly part meaning he gets whatever he demands right away.Once he fixates on something, for however long he’s focused on it, he has to have it now because he can’t defer gratification for even five minutes. He’s an appetite made animate. He wants his preferred food, he wants constant praise, he wants sex, he wants gold and wealth, he wants property he can then keep everyone not in his favor out of. And he has complete, unilateral control of America’s nuclear arsenal. Sleep well.

Russia had to admit to a bit of reality today:

The Ukrainian, American, and Russian Delegations Are Today in the UAE; They Are Discussing the Parameters for Ending the War – Address by the President

23 January 2026 – 20:12

I wish you good health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today has been full of tasks, including for our diplomatic team. Ukrainian representatives report to me almost every hour – they are currently in the UAE, where a conversation took place today involving the Ukrainian, American, and Russian delegations. This is important, as such trilateral meeting formats haven’t happened for a long time. They are discussing the parameters for ending the war. By now, they should already have at least some answers from Russia – the key is that Russia must be ready to end this war, the one it itself started. Ukraine’s positions are clear. I’ve defined the framework for dialogue for our delegation, which remains in constant contact: Rustem Umerov, Kyrylo Budanov, Davyd Arakhamiia, and Sergiy Kyslytsya. Tomorrow, General Hnatov, Chief of the General Staff, and a representative from Defense Intelligence, Skibitskyi, will join the negotiations. As for the substance of today’s discussions, it is still too early to draw conclusions – we will see how the conversation develops tomorrow and what results it produces. It is necessary that not only Ukraine has the desire to end this war and achieve full security, but that a similar desire somehow emerges in Russia as well.

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Fedorov delivered a briefing today on the specifics of the frontline situation and our technological responses. I thank every unit defending our Ukrainian positions and significantly increasing the technological component. The level of Russian losses – 35,000 in December – is very serious. We also discussed personnel matters with the Minister, not only within the Ministry but across the branches of the Armed Forces, including the Air Force. It is good to see that coordination within the Air Force and analysis of strike circumstances are increasing. The conclusions are essential to make the system more effective. I also instructed our team to process our agreements with partners on air defense missiles as swiftly and thoroughly as possible. Yesterday, there was a positive signal in talks with President Trump regarding PAC-3 Patriot missiles; now we need a positive signal here in Ukraine – in real deliveries for the defenders of our skies. Logistics must be expedited to the maximum.

I also held a special energy coordination call – each day begins in this very format. Repair crews, emergency services, energy companies, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine are all working around the clock, and recovery efforts are yielding results. Still, the overall situation remains very difficult, particularly in Kyiv and the region, the Dnipro region – Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih – Kharkiv and the region, Zaporizhzhia, the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. We reviewed the situation in Odesa separately. I want to highlight the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – thank you to everyone involved. Everything is as clear and concrete as possible regarding generator and equipment reserves, real help to cities, with the largest share going to Kyiv, and warming and assistance points for people. Unfortunately, many buildings in the capital remain without heating. Maximum crews and maximum equipment have been deployed to help people. We spoke with Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko about programs that can support both the economy and communities – specifically regarding generators and enabling businesses to continue operating: programs as flexible as possible to help small businesses buy and maintain generators. Government officials are expected to present everything to the public today. There is also a decision to directly support every employee in the repair crews. These are additional payments for each month of this emergency situation. We agreed today with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Energy on the format of the payments and how people will receive these payments. Each employee involved in emergency restoration work will receive a bonus of 20,000 hryvnias for January, February, and March of this year – 20,000 per month. The Government will provide additional details. And of course, I thank every country and all the leaders providing the necessary assistance. Energy aid packages, specifically, are already in place, with more on the way: the European Union, and separately Italy, Germany, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Poland, Japan, and the United States. I thank all of you who stand with us, who stand with Ukraine!

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy also participated in the Second National Forum of Talented Youth today.

The President Met with Ukrainian Youth

23 January 2026 – 21:41

On the eve of International Day of Education, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the Second National Forum of Talented Youth. This event is organized for the second year in a row by the Fund of the President for Education, Science and Sports to recognize the achievements of young Ukrainians at the national level, as well as to showcase prospects for professional development in Ukraine.

The forum brought together over 600 participants from across the country, including winners of international and national Olympiads, the 2025 WRO Robotics Olympiad, graduates with the highest NMT scores, and winners of the 2025 Youth Olympic Games.

“We are grateful that you are in Ukraine, and this is the truth. I think we should all, first of all, be grateful to our military. Thanks to them, Ukraine exists. And secondly, we should be grateful to you. You give this energy and motivation to fight for what Ukraine is. Above all, Ukraine is our freedom and our people,” the Head of State said.

During the forum, discussions focused on engaging Ukrainian youth in developing modern scientific solutions, advancing promising sectors during the war and their application in peacetime, as well as the challenges of post-war reconstruction.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that, during wartime, Ukraine has made significant progress in technological development, especially in the defense sector, and it is important not to lose this expertise after peace is restored.

“Everything that today serves the front and preserves our defense capabilities will, in peacetime, serve the peaceful process. The same frontline medicine will work exclusively for the civilian sector after the war. Technologies, demining, and so on. Everything connected today with drones, engineering, mathematics – all that which was lost for many years in Ukraine has now found its place,” the President noted.

The head of state presented young scientists with more than 40 honorary awards of the Prize of the President of Ukraine for their work in physics, chemistry, digital technologies, innovation, economics, medicine, ecology, and construction.

🇬🇪Georgia and Georgian Dream is emerging as a key enabler of Russia’s sanctioned shadow fleet.
New reporting by Finland’s YLE reveals how Georgia-registered companies are keeping Russian oil tankers operational despite EU sanctions.

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

At the center is Arnika Trade LLC, a company registered in Tbilisi, identified as a key intermediary supplying spare parts for Finnish Wärtsilä engines used on Russian tankers under sanctions.
2/11

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

These are not old contracts or accidental spillovers.
The reporting documents systematic deliveries from 2023–2025, routed via third countries specifically to evade EU and Western export controls.
3/11

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

This matters because Wärtsilä engines power many vessels central to Russia’s oil-export shadow fleet – a fleet explicitly targeted by EU sanctions to cut Kremlin war revenues.
4/11

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

Georgia is not a passive transit point.
This operation runs through Georgia-registered companies, Georgian banking access, customs clearance, and Georgian jurisdiction.
Georgian Dream is probably overseeing the operation.
5/11

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

That distinction is crucial.
This is not sanctions “leakage”.
It is Georgian Dream sanctions facilitation.
6/11

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

And it fits a broader pattern.
Georgia is increasingly functioned as a safe haven for sanctions evasion, linked to both Russian and Iranian networks across trade, finance, and logistics.
7/11

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

Under Georgian Dream, enforcement bodies are centralized, oversight is politicized, and “strategic ambiguity” toward Russia has become state policy.
8/11

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 2:26 PM

The EU now faces a hard choice:
Treat Georgia as a partner bound by sanctions, or as a jurisdiction actively undermining them.
If Ukraine is to win the war, Georgian Dream must be stopped.
Silence rewards the strategy. Scrutiny breaks it.

— Marika Mikiashvili 🇬🇪🇺🇦🇪🇺 (@marikamikiashvili.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 11:45 AM

From JAM News:

Ahead of Armenia’s parliamentary elections scheduled for June 2026, the country has faced what officials describe as a large-scale hybrid attack. A coordinated disinformation campaign has targeted Armenia for an extended period. The situation has become so serious that the authorities have asked European partners for assistance. The European Union has already decided to allocate €15m to strengthen Armenia’s resilience, including efforts to counter disinformation.

Armenia’s Foreign Intelligence Service of Armenia disclosed some details of the hybrid attacks in its annual report.

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Armenia did not name the countries interested in spreading disinformation in Armenia. However, it said that, to influence society during the pre-election period and affect voters’ choices,

  • false, distorted and out-of-context information is circulated,
  • narratives that run counter to Armenia’s interests are injected into the information space.

The Foreign Intelligence Service warned that attackers use a combination of overt propaganda and covert information operations.

“Visible propaganda against Armenia is mainly carried out by foreign state or government bodies, including intelligence services or resources linked to them. Covert operations, which often fuel and amplify visible propaganda, rely on websites and user accounts that show no obvious traces of any foreign state actor. These tools spread messages designed to create a stronger, more shocking effect.

In 2025, we recorded the use of tactics involving the spread of false information, disinformation or distorted content by various actors through fake accounts, advertising and bot networks. The ability to generate false text and audiovisual materials using artificial intelligence continued to grow. […] The trend of placing false information on foreign information platforms and then ‘legitimising’ it and spreading it through official and unofficial resources of regional actors, which we recorded in 2025, is likely to continue in 2026.”

Local media experts also monitor the situation. They say Russian bot networks and Azerbaijani propaganda outlets spread most of the fake content.

Armenia has also come under direct attack from the pro-Kremlin bot network “Matryoshka”. The same network has recently targeted European leaders by exploiting the story surrounding Nicolás Maduro. The network previously focused on Ukraine and Moldova. It has now circulated AI-generated videos accusing Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of building “gas chambers” and falsely claiming that the singer Cher called for his abduction.

Disinformation campaigns have not focused solely on the prime minister. One fake publication targeted Armenian parliamentary speaker Alen Simonyan. It claimed that he had built a paedophile empire for senior officials. The same publication alleged that Pashinyan, his close associates and security chiefs were involved. It also claimed that since 2020 the Armenian authorities had pressured UNICEF to understate statistics on crimes against children.

The latest disinformation claim appeared on the platform VT Foreign Policy. It accused Armenia’s prime minister of appointing judges from his inner circle in order to “cleanse” the country’s political field ahead of elections. Armenia’s Ministry of Justice of Armenia has already denied the claim. The ministry said the prime minister “has no authority, influence or involvement at any stage of the selection or appointment of judges”.

At the same time, Azerbaijani websites have published fabricated letters supposedly from the European Commission and fake videos accusing Armenian intelligence services. Pro-Russian media outlets and Telegram channels inside Armenia have amplified these materials.

Political analyst Boris Navasardyan spoke about the campaign targeting Armenia, the differences between Russia’s and Azerbaijan’s goals, the potential risks and ways to counter disinformation.

Goal of Russian fake attacks

Political analyst Boris Navasardyan said:

“Our society remains fairly trusting of information spread through various digital platforms. It is obvious that Russia does not build such campaigns blindly. They always carry out an analysis of public reactions to specific information leaks beforehand. As a result, the methods they use prove highly effective.

If disinformation targets Nikol Pashinyan or the government, it is directly linked to the upcoming parliamentary elections. Even if the goal is not a change of power, the task is to delegitimise the electoral process. In other words, the aim is to provoke violations that the authorities may not be prepared for and to discredit the election results.

In addition, fake attacks seek to fragment the electorate as much as possible. The goal is to ensure that no political force gains a stable majority and that any government has to rely on fragile coalitions. Such an outcome can reduce the country’s governability and weaken its ability to take key decisions on security and development.

Coalition governments are, of course, a product of democracy. But when a country is in a difficult situation, they remain unstable and struggle to resolve critical issues quickly because of conflicting positions and interests among coalition members.”

Denmark and Greenland:

1/ Denmark was preparing to fight the United States over Greenland, according to Scandinavian news reports. Around 1,000 Danish troops and a frigate with anti-ship and anti-aircraft capabilities are being sent to Greenland, with standing orders to fight invading forces. ⬇️

2/ Prior to Donald Trump’s apparent climbdown after the recent Davos summit, Denmark planned to send around 1,000 soldiers to Greenland during 2026. Around 300 have already arrived in Kangerlussuaq and Nuuk, supplemented by a French mountain infantry unit.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

3/ Denmark has also deployed the frigate Peter Willemoes, which has advanced anti-aircraft and anti-ship capabilities, to patrol off western Greenland. The deployment will release ice-capable Thetis-class patrol vessels to operate nearer inshore.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

4/ The Danish and Swedish public broadcasters DR and SVT report that the troops have been issued with live ammunition and that “Denmark was ready to take up the fight militarily if, in the worst-case scenario, Greenland were to be attacked by the United States.”

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

5/ An order issued to the troops stated that they were to “strengthen the ability to execute the defence plan for Greenland as soon as possible,” leading to a hastily-arranged deployment under the auspices of a planned exercise termed Arctic Endurance.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

6/ DR reports that “there was widespread political will to take up the fight if an American attack were to occur. Not only in the Danish government, but also in a wide range of red [left-wing] and blue [right-wing] opposition parties.”

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

7/ While they recognised that Denmark would likely not defeat the US in a direct conflict, “the analysis was that they needed to have a plan for such a scenario, and that they wanted to raise the political price for the American president if he were to choose the military path.”

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

8/ Arctic Endurance is a multi-phased operation intended to strengthen “the presence and level of activity in Greenland to demonstrate the will and ability to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Realm”. More troops and capabilities may be deployed later.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

9/ Among the Danish forces to be deployed are infantrymen from the Jutland Dragoon Regiment; sappers from the Engineer Regiment in Skive, who are specialists in building fighting positions; and F-35 fighter jets, which have patrolled over Greenland for the first time.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

10/ Vanguard troops and soldiers from other European NATO allies have also participated, including Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. All were briefly threatened by Trump with tariffs for the deployment, though he has since recanted.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

11/ According to SVT, the operation “is similar to a traditional deterrence operation where military readiness is increased for a period of time, according to people with insight that SVT spoke to.”

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

12/ “But what distinguishes it from other military operations of a similar type is that it will also send signals to the US, and not just Russia and China.”

The troops have been issued with live ammunition and standing orders to fight invaders, according to Danish news sources.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

13/ Denmark requested Swedish assistance early last week, prompting the Swedish defence leadership to agree to provide planning officers at short notice after consultations with the government. Sweden says it intends to continue to participate alongside the Danes.

— ChrisO_wiki (@chriso-wiki.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 7:56 AM

14/ Danish professor of war studies @stenrynning says he “never in my life thought we would get to the point where one could imagine Danish soldiers being sent out to exercise for a defence plan with live ammunition because perhaps politically one felt a need to deter the USA.” /end

I can’t imagine why?

Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: “Albertans are very independent people. There’s a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got.”

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) January 23, 2026 at 9:40 AM

From The CBC:

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commented Thursday on the separatist movement in Alberta — making him the highest-ranking member of the Trump administration to weigh in on the province’s politics.

While appearing on the right-wing TV station Real America’s Voice, Bessent claimed Canada won’t let Alberta build a pipeline to the Pacific.

“I think we should let them come down into the U.S., and Alberta’s a natural partner for the U.S.,” he said.

“They have great resources. The Albertans are very independent people,” Bessent said, adding there’s a “rumour that they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not.”

When asked if he knew something about it, Bessent said, “People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the U.S. has got.”

Some organizers of the Alberta independence movement have claimed they had meetings with members of the Trump administration, although they have not disclosed any names. Their message has started to spread among MAGA influencers online, and among Republicans broadly.

Andy Ogles, a Republican congressman in Tennessee, told a BBC panel earlier this week that the people of Alberta would “prefer not to be a part of Canada and be a part of the United States because we are winning day in and day out.”

The Alberta independence movement is collecting signatures to trigger a referendum. The question that referendum would ask is whether Alberta should be independent from Canada — not whether it should join the United States.

Mitch Sylvestre, who is spearheading the petition for a referendum, said Friday he doesn’t think anyone in his movement wants to join the U.S.

“People want sovereignty, and that’s what people in the U.S. have, but we want sovereignty independent of the U.S,” he said.

Sylvestre said he thought Bessent was pointing out the obvious by calling Alberta and the U.S. “natural partners,” given the amount of trade they exchange.

Sylvestre said U.S. officials should be paying attention to what’s happening in Alberta — but he’d rather they didn’t comment on his push for independence.

“Alberta on its own will do very well,” he said. “A free-trade agreement with the U.S. would probably be good for both sides. Good for us, for sure.”

More at the link.

First, yes that is noted neo-NAZI and former Navy urinalysis observer Jack “Agent Poso” Posobiec.

Second, here’s what I expect Trump’s team thinks its actually doing and it ties the Greenland idiocy to Bessent’s remarks about Alberta. The US base in Greenland is 16 miles from Nunavut, Canada across Baffin Bay. Nunavut is geographically large covering a good chunk of Canada’s eastern arctic area and the approaches to it, but sparsely populated with only 36,000 Canadians living there. As important, it has lots of minerals including rare earths, as well as petroleum deposits. Alberta, Canada is likely going to hold an election driven by the separatist minority in OCT 2026. The separatist minority movement and party in Alberta, like all of these groups in the US (Texit, CalExit) and the EU (AfD, UKIP and Farage’s Reform, LePen’s now named La Renaissance Party, etc) are all funded either covertly or overtly by Russia. The separatists are going to lose the referendum. It is unlikely they’ll get much more than 30% voting in favor at the most. However, if I put two BCTs into Pituffik, once I secure Greenland the US can easily threaten Nunavut. And, at the same time, squeeze Canada by claiming that the separatist election was rigged by the Carney government in Ottawa and demanding that Alberta become the 51st state. When the Canadians resist, Trump can then try take both Nunavut and Alberta by force. This, combined with Greenland gives the US complete control over the eastern to mid Arctic, plus control of two of Canada’s largest oil producing regions, as well as a whole lot of mineral resources, including rare earths, in Greenland, Nunavut, and Alberta. This would be both the most stupid and most deadly course of action. Unfortunately, given who is badly running the US, you can’t rule anything out. I don’t expect they’ll do this. I do expect they’ll try to talk themselves into doing some or part of it. Which will, of course, be aided and abetted by Putin when he talks to Trump on the latter’s cell phone late at night in the US.

This is what happens when you let a pair of real estate developers, who are heavily dependent on Russian oligarch/Russian organized crime money try to negotiate the end to a major interstate war. They view everything as a sale of property – land, homes, commercial space – and because the Russians have had their financial hooks into both Witkoff (commercial real estate development) and Jared (residential real estate) for decades, the two ignoramuses don’t even know they’re reflexively controlled. This is going to be dead on arrival. Not least of which because the Russians have already rejected the deal before it was negotiated.

Russians openly state that there will be no peace until Ukraine surrenders. They’ve even invented a term for it: the “Anchorage format.” Peskov stated this clearly yesterday, and every russian action confirms the same thing.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 3:02 PM

The Trump administration had a choice between standing on the right side of history by arming Ukraine, or accepting russian demands and trying to pressure Ukraine into surrender. They chose the latter. It didn’t work.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 3:02 PM

Yet they keep trying while simultaneously pretending they aren’t, because that kind of design would be way too unpopular. We’re all just dancing this dance with the U.S. now. Russia pretends these negotiations can actually lead somewhere while being unwilling to stop their war. Ukraine plays nice

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 3:02 PM

while knowing russia won’t stop and we will not surrender. It’s all so Trump can say he’s done oh-so-much,when in reality, nothing has come of it

At the very least, maybe a prisoner-of-war exchange will be agreed upon to create the illusion of progress. That would be 1 good thing in all this circus

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 23, 2026 at 3:02 PM
